This is Nigeria, 1AZ Becomes 2AZ in 2seconds wink

Hmmmm....That is a problem. Considering how generous the warranty was, coupled with the financial constraints the customer run into, further coupled with the dodgy stereotypes some Nigerians are doing a great job at confirming it's not beyond belief that the customer (Baba40) might be pulling a fast one..hmmmm....

I have seen mechanics swap an entire engine into a Corolla(the late 90s one though) in the time that it took to swap out my shocks! So yeah.......

As I am not in Nigeria, this could be only an assumption but yeah, Baba... please prove me wrong if you can.

So I've been following this wahala for some time now, with my opinion swaying as evidence appears. I think it comes down to this.....

Gazzuzz, do you have the number of the engine you sold to Baba40?

Baba40, could you post the engine no of the engine in your car?

I think this will help dissipate the strong smell of rat on this thread.

Thanks!

Exactly what happened to me too. How I wish I got this your contribution earlier. I did a lot of research too and that was why I asked here on Nairaland. I went to price a new gearbox but after some interaction with the seller, he told me about the difference between the American model and Japanese Model. He told me to first confirm that the correct ECU was used and after checking the number just as you recommended, vooom it was not same. I ordered for another ECU with same number and I have driven it for over 2 hours and the transmission problem dissappeared. I am now very happy and could put my baby back on long journey anywhere.
Thanks for this piece. it solved my problem exactly. My car is now behaving excellently well!

Hmmm...if only I had a kobo for the number of times a misdiagnosis or a misfix by some mech almost sent me down the road to hell. The internet has saved me and my wallet numerous times.

I'm happy your car is back on the road!

Alright, so I had a similar problem after some electrician fried my ECU. A new ECU was bought and my transmission did NOT like it; it threw a PO755 code (solenoid B)..and slammed into gear and refused to go into overdrive at times- making it almost undrivable!!. I was advised to change my transmission and like you, I was rather suspicious! So I did quite alot of research and......

As it turned out the mech had bought an ECU that was correct to the model but was for an entirely different engine. I ordered a new ECU myself (correct to the number), had my key coded to it and voala, Transmission problem gone! I have since travelled numerous times and the code- nor it's problems have returned.

My advice good friend? We might have the same problem here but better still; hit the net with your problem, especially Honda CR-V forums!

Hi! I use the same car, (for about 8 years now) and had the same problem eons ago. Yeah, the high speed fan was going bad.

But yeah, you should probably look into putting your thermostat back. your car is probably constantly running open loop and trust me, that makes it horribly thirsty. (I removed the 'stat' once to clean my cooling system)

Cheers!

Car Talk / Re: Are There Cheap Nigerian Used Cars? by billy187(m): 9:06pm On Dec 29, 2019
Great thread, Gazzuzz! I'm once again in the market for a used car, and I've been wondering about the disproportionately large number of some models on the market. I reside in Ghana though (Not that its gonna change anything, the auto industries of the two countries are almost identical).

That being said, I am quite curious about some other models not mentioned here. They seem to be quite numerous here, and oddly cheap. Online reviews seem to check out (mostly) but then we all know its a very different game locally.

1. 2008-2012(?) Honda Accord
2. 2005- 2011 Honda Civic
3. Volkswagen Golf (MK4 and MK5)
4. 2009 going Pontiac Vibe i guess this was aptly covered by the matrix sessions/ 2.4 in the camry (i hear thats some variants of the vibe carry this engine.
5. 2001-2006 Honda Cr-V
6. Nissan Altima (i guess a post on the 02-06 variant is in the pipeline, but how about the 07-11ish version)

I'm really grateful- in advance! grin

I had a similar problem, as if the car was slamming into gear. it ended up being a rogue throttle body. My check engine light pointed me in that direction.

tetralogyfallot:
I was so unfortunate to waste my 600k to purchase a 9ja used ford focus. I have spent over 300k trying to fix either one problem or the other. The car keeps developing from one fault to another. I've replaced top gasket about 2 times, replaced ac compressor, fix the leaky ac pipes, replaced the engine manifold as the mechanic said it was not the follow come manifold that is on the engine and if I did not change it d car would be emitting smoke, I've replaced air flow meter, I've changed fuel pump like 5 times at last I just have to buy the complete fuel pump kit that was removed from accidented car, I've changed the lever gear as it gear hardens anytime I want to reverse, I've changed fan belts like 2 times, I've replaced the nozzles of the car as I was told it may be the cause of high fuel consumption. I've changed the clutch disc. The painful part of the story is that after all these changes the car is still not in good form cos I was about driving it this evening and the gear is failing to even respond. Please please and please don't ever buy a Nigerian used car. If you don't have enough money, save up n double your huste until your money complete to buy even if it a small tokunboh car. Nigerians don't sell their cars until it starts developing issues.

I have used the very same car since 2012 and I dont think my problems would even be half the number of yours. One thing someone rightly mentioned here is the possible abuse of your car by Kazeems. If there's one thing I know in my years of using my Focus, they do NOT take abuse well at all!

Oh and yes, those Kazeems can misdiagnose the hell out of a car! Five fuel pumps?! How?! Were you pumping the fuel out of an oil well?! grin

Car Talk / Re: Sedan Vehicles: Do Toyota's Outlast Mercedes Benz In Real Life? NO!!! by billy187(m): 12:22pm On Jun 27, 2019
This is a difficult debate, as the reliability for both brands has not remained stable over the years.

Mercedes up to the late 90s overengineered their cars- they pretty much built them like tanks. However much later 90s and early 00s saw Mercedes reliability go to the dogs. Just compare the number of W124s to W211s on our roads now (let's not even bring in the W123 grin ). Waaay more W124s!

Toyota has been arguably more stable, with their modern vehicles being very reliable, as well as most of their older ones.

So in this light, the question has a two pronged answer; a present day Toyota would easily oultlast a present day Mercedes; however the LEAST likely to die car EVER would definitely have a three pointed star on its bonnet.

Go run pressure checks on your cooling system though it's most certain that you have a failling headgasket.

Car Talk / Overheating Problems, Help! by billy187(m): 8:59pm On Feb 23, 2019
Hello everyone! it's a bit of a long epistle but please give it a read and help me, if possible!

I drive an '03 Ford Focus. It has been quite trouble free with only routine maintenance for the last few years. However since December, I have been having these weird episodes of the car threatening to overheat, especially in extended traffic jams( doesn't usually matter the time, though middays are particularly troublesome). However, the car's temp will stabilize as soon as I turn on the air conditioning.

I first traced the problem to a dodgy primary cooling fan. I changed the fan, and the problem seemed to go away, temporarily.

It was then apparent that my expansion tank had a crack in it. It wasn't too big, but then I believed it would be enough to mess up the pressure of my cooling system (my car does not have a radiator cap,) I then sought another expansion tank from my mechanic.

After searching for an extended period however, he could not find the exact type of expansion tank. He however found a smaller one that fit quite well. The problem, however, never really went away- although it was a bit better.

Things however came to a head last week as my temperature needle quickly settled in the red on my way to work. I pulled over, and whiles the coolant hadn't boiled, the hose leading to my thermostat housing had expanded to more than twice its size. I quickly removed the thermostat on the side of the road and made it to work

I automatically assumed my thermostat had failed closed, thus solving my mystery. Boy, was I wrong.

Three days later in extreme rush hour traffic, I caught the temp needle inching away from it's normal midpoint to the red...I quickly turned on the air conditioning and the needle quickly fled to it's point at the center. Sigh. The problem was back! When I got home and checked, the pipe leading to the thermostat housing had expanded once again.

I have multiple suspicions, highest of which is the smaller expansion tank. I believe it has affected the pressure of the entire cooling system. I will add pictures of the old and new tanks so yalls can be the judge.

Could it also be that my head gasket is going? I haven't really given this much of thought as the signs (oil in coolant/ vice versa,) are not noticable. however I do have to fill coolant every week or so (noticed thermostat housing is leaking as well).

Thanks for reading this far and not dying of boredom (or disappointing election results). Please help a brother!

cheers!

Sorry to be a derailer, but I'm beginning to think this "leg pulling" thing is somehow limited to Nigeria. I live in Ghana and we have our share of leg pullings - however the VAST majority here seem to be in early 2000s VWs, as well as late 90s- early 2000 Toyota Tacoma/ 4 runners.

I have only witnessed it on a Honda once. Once! Strange, isn't it?

Even the larger 6.2 v8 in the Escalade has better fuel economy than that dinosaur.

I have wondered about this for quite a while now. Mazda makes some of the finest vehicles for the money (seriously, the interior of any recent model Mazda 6 makes the interiors of similarly aged camrys look like dog puke). I also hear they are extremely fun to drive

I personally prefer the '16 model though, few changes but they make all the difference.

I bet the driver of the Volvo station wagon was not paying attention to the road. Odds are that he/she was looking at a phone or dozing off. That said, I guess this goes to show how well built Volvos are. Volvo really goes out of its way innovating to make its vehicles as safe as possible; heck, I bet a newer Volvo might have even avoided this accident with Lane Keep Assist.
