Is it priced per square feet or it's a free for all price scheme whereby an artisan can demand anything they feel like?

skimanski: Bros forget that one. You know say I no go do height of less than 2.1. Why didnt you ask me if I will agree to a height on 3meter. Make you see the big yes. as far as the door can be fabricated to hold. There is nothing like Standard window height. There is only a reasonable notion that you can want the height of the window to follow the height of door. Even for door height, you dont use the word standard. You use the word "commonly used Height"
Picture one was built by the second largest Building construction co in Nigeria. See the door? standard was thrown out the window, I can imagine what the height of the internal doors would be. Maybe their Architects no pass Bsc.
Bros lets be realistic. As far as you can calculate the structural viability of the Architecture and the livability, then you are good. Thats what make you an Architect. to Design you way through anything (Working out a design solution to a Problem). Please what purpose or function does that building serves? |

"Standard" is somewhat synonymous to "Normal" in the subject matter considering all manner of approved codes and regulations. What exactly is the USA standard ceiling height from floor and also a modern house in a broad perspective?Building in Nigeria
A low ceiling to floor height will definitely make your room to be stuffy if the right number of window openings is not put on that particular section going with the aesthetic sense of using 1000mm as window width in recent builds. Except one wants to go cheap why will he be bothered about heat/cooling on wasted/dead spaces? I guess those spaces are good for cobwebs. Lighting in a house; Till the invention of energy saving bulbs,LED,etc, etc lighting has always been illumination. It has nothing to do with heat and very insignificant because if it is, we all would be putting on our bulbs at night while sleeping. Don't get me wrong here. There are numerous ways to generate heat in a build to ease cold but I do not entirely think it's required in Nigeria because even when the weather is cold we'll still put on our air condition units. But one can opt for it in his home if he decides. Aesthetic Recent designs are making the use of ceiling fans and even wall lights old fashioned. The use of POP as ceiling, LED lights within them have given most builds a renewed sense of taste. With less force one should not be able to touch the ceiling of his house with hands stretched up and if you do then your ceiling is definitely low. |

snakebeat: Height of whatever u are constructing d bold informed my question, there is no such thing as only thing standard in construction!!!! Everything should be standard, even if all professionals don't practice it, d least we can do is to preach it. I think you're getting it mixed up. Standard-------- something above average, acceptable generally, of right quality, etc, etc. A room is standard when it is 3.6X3.6m. Anything short of that is not. Hope you get my drift now. |

Flaghouse1: What I actually meant is that by the time you start building "as is" on diagram you will discover some ideas are just good on papers ,but when it comes to doing it on the field experience and maturity counts, especially roof designs are prone to these kind of design flaws There's always a catch phrase on every house plan based on that. |

EgunMogaji: This is what set's you apart from the run of the mill builders on this site.
Rest assured that most of us that are exposed to different architectures in different parts of the world truly appreciates what you and your team are doing for Nigerian architecture.
Let me share a recent occurrence on something similar.
So I approached an Architect on social media that offered a free kitchen design. I sent him my building plan as well as the current state of the kitchen. The picture clearly shows a kitchen that is tiled, windows and doors installed, rough plumbing in place, etc
I have a pet peeve which is I hate when I see sink stuck to one corner of the kitchen. I think that even a sink is more prominent than a stove because not everyone cooks in their kitchens. But they certainly clean up, wash plates, hands, etc
So when I designed my kitchen I placed it square in the middle of the wall.
When he designed the layout he moved the kitchen to one corner of the wall. When I asked him why he told me that he practices Feng Shui style of architecture. There's nothing wrong about this and we decided to part ways because he was adamant but I know what I want.
He said that sink should not be next to stoves. To me this sounded ridiculous since I've seen many houses on Houzz that has the same setup that I wanted.
I looked up the Feng Shui nonsense and I read this:
"Let’s start with the myths. One of the most common Feng Shui myths is that your stove should never be located directly across from your sink. This myth stems from misunderstanding the Five Element cycle in Feng Shui. The Five Element Cycle dictates that the water element “puts out” or destroys the fire element. While this is true, it isn’t the reason that ancient Feng Shui knowledge tells us to avoid placing the stove (fire) next to, or opposite the sink (water).
The reason Feng Shui originally recommended avoiding having water too near fire is because in ancient China (where Feng Shui began) people cooked over an open flame. Before the invention of matches, starting a fire was an arduous task. The last thing you wanted to have happen when you were cooking over fire is the flame to go out, hence, it is just common sense that you would want to avoid water near that area.
Today we have gas and electric stoves instead of wood-burning fires to cook over, and running water in sinks instead of sloshing open buckets. The rule of having the water (sink) near the stove (fire) does not apply to our modern kitchens. There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about if your sink opposes or sits next to your stove. In fact, my sink is directly across from my stove, and nothing has happened because of it in all the many years I’ve lived in my home. If this is the case in your home as well, you have nothing to be concerned about, despite what you may have read in some Feng Shui books."
https://sandiegofengshuiblog./2010/10/20/kitchen-feng-shui/
So I agree with you is that "standard is what you want for your house" as long as it's not against building code. Even some things against building code can have a waiver requested for and granted. Just because an idea does not suit you means the person is a buffalo. Well I am yet to see any build that is 101%. |

raymondFirstborn: As for me and my fellow colleagues we stand strongly behind 3m building height for bungalows subject to the International building code (IBC) and the BSMM3. The reason we all went to higher institutions was to learn the basics based on approved and acceptable standards. As long as your build is without structural defect and maintains an aesthetic sense which is not entirely weird in nature then it's a go go. |

skimanski: Standard? This is beyond 200 level now. and note I was never taught that 9coach was a standard for window. What I was taught was that standard for doors are 9 coach. so its nice to make the lintel be on same level as the door. Now Regarding the Bolded, I do not agree with you that its not about cost, or ventilation, or Aesthetics but about standard. The only standard is what you want for your house. There are doors above the height of the 9 block course standard. The only thing standard in building construction is using the right tools, materials, right and appropriate mix(es). Every other thing is based on its structural viability, how it appeals to the eyes upon finishing and how it gives comfort to both infants and the aged when in use. |

raymondFirstborn: it all depends on how high the wall would be, based on the design .Building wall= 3m block height =0.225mm. block =3/0.225=13.33coaches from german floor to roof. Designs are on paper which are subject to change on the field. |

skimanski: Less Lighting into the House
The difference in Overall cost isn't significantly much because some people say higher Lintel means Taller Windows which is extra cost. But the difference isn't much because higher Windows means less block Works and Plaster space to work with overall Engineering practice is all about pushing beyond the known standard practice to achieving ones goals. I have seen somewhat of what your question is all about and i'd ask you what I asked the perceived engineer on site too. Mean while this is an illustration of the building but you can point me in your direction if it does not go in line of what you intend doing; 4 blocks from german floor to window base 10 blocks from window base to lintel...... My question How many blocks will you place on top the cast lintel both internal and external walls? |

skimanski: Why do a lot of people stick to 9coach of block as Lintel Level?
Its less Light,
Its aesthetically not too pleasing,
Its not significantly less expensive.
Please if Anybody has any reason why its better please inform so as to guide our Judgement in the future. Please put a clearer meaning to the bold. |

oyb: the key roles of a QS (quantity takeoff, cost estimation) have been overtaken by technology.
you can spit out an entire BOM [architectural, m&e the whole nine yards using modern software.
the other disciplines on a project require some degree of imagination; which is why the client may provide a design brief stating their expectations. lifting of material measurement from a design does not require imagination - all it requires is automation. if you, like most other professionals, are expanding your portfolio of capabilities then no problem, but if you are focusing on the traditional roles of QS - good luck to you.
you should also note that invariably technology kills off professions
it comes back to what i said earlier. your architect or engineer provides a design. the design is a product of talent/imagination/experience. which is why several design solutions can arise from a single brief. however, the estimates/Bill of materials that will come from a design will roughly be the same
i don't think this; i know this.
if you do not continue to develop yourself, that is exactly what will happen. at any point you must be able to demonstrate to your client why you are a better choice.
interestingly, on the last project i handled, the contractor's project manager was an experienced QS, and we went head to head on their numerous variation claims. at every instance they made inflated claims - some were 'typos'; some were double claims;some were over measurements; but we were able to ensure that they could only claim what they were owed.
there was this bizarre claim where we would pay for materials delivered to site, and still be expected to pay full price for finished product. the QS kept saying that was the standard and that if i was a QS i would understand . maybe you guys could explain that standard to me ? I only joined this argument because you spoke ill of an entire profession. Just because I put up quotations does not make me a QS. Do not mistake that. |

EgunMogaji: Well said.
For the types of jobs that we discuss here mostly, that profession is a complete waste.
Now, for financed buildings, joint builds, commercial builds then an argument can be made.
I've heard of a unique situation though from Hajj where the HOA is asking for a QS. Regarding the bold I am also sure that a good artisan is highly recommended and all others are purely a waste too. |

oyb: all i see are demands to know what i do. that is not relevant to this discussion
this is the typical workflow in my office PM prepares project brief /proposal/scope architect prepares drawings. discipline engineers prepare drawings and boqs PM reviews for adequacy, prepares cost estimate etal
QS does not feature in the workflow. even worse is the fact that we had a QS some years back who kept on giving us poorly done estimates that messed us up in the field. to date i still have no idea how the QS lifted quantities, given the horrible variations.
you see. what is funny is your rank hypocrisy. you first start calling out others demanding to know if they are a QS, then you come out boasting you do QS, Architect builder contractor as 'hustle'. by yourself you are admitting that your profession is dying, otherwise you would not be doing the same thing [taking up the work of other professionals ] you were bitching about a few posts ago.
it is not about shortcuts. it is about actual value add. if i cannot clearly point to the value you are adding to my project, then why am i employing you? You made it your your to put off an entire profession. I think those who it is theirs should as well in turn know what exactly is yours. Now if your company had a QS who could not add value to his employer, does that mean all QS don't add value to the system? If one happen to get the services of an Architect whose designs are entirely criticised and modified by a Civil Engineer and vice versa in certain instances it has happened does that mean both professions don't add value to the system. For the QS not to add value is an option you make and not that the QS is a dead profession. Do you think in organised settings an Architect or Civil Engineer can actually submit a BOM without getting the services of a QS? If anyone happens to get the services of an artisan who does all of the above perfectly I guess the services of the Architect and Civil Engineer in your company cease to exist? |
