Building a house:
Based on the topography of your land your foundation depth is 600mm (bungalows) and +900mm(storey building,etc,etc.)
Blinding 150mm thickness(standard) done with cement+sharp sand+granite with appropriate mix ratio.
Raise blocks to desired dpc level (take into consideration the height of existing access road).
In certain instances we use concrete mix to fill the block form work (first block from ground) before raising to desired dpc level.

If you do all these well without cutting corners you have no reason to worry for capillary rise affecting your structure.

The other less economical options are considered for low cost housing projects and not for this thread.

If u remove concrete cover from such thickness, what do u think will be left for reinforcement to do chaining? Reinforcement done for german floor is slab like, not beam like, how are u going to chain a building with that? U chain a buildng with plinth beam, lintel & slab beam. not german floor. The reason for reinforcing german floor is different from chaining & it isn't necessary in this case.

You keep mentioning german floor repeatedly. What I mentioned is for the walls alone(where blocks run). And I know all the reasons for it. Now as regards the concrete thickness he can choose to do a minimum of 4" thickness.

There are lots of less economical approach to the subject matter. It's all a matter of choice.

What he is proposing is not new, it is the method adopted by most people who can't afford a complete dpc.

Well I do not know what most people do over there.
This is what we do over here.
You can use R12(preferred) or R10.
Tell your iron bender to do same thing as for lintel. It should run continuous on all walls in the building. If you want to be economical you do it on all external walls and major walls cutting across the building. Depending on the span of your structure you can choose to introduce columns at all ends of your structure.

Hello people.

I just need some inputs and advice concerning my situation. 

I have just completed the foundation for my twin flats (2bed and 1bedroom) and I'm about to take a decision on the German flooring. 

Due to cost constraints I have at the moment, I'm forced to think of other options that will possibly achieve the same end results. 

Instead of German flooring, I'm considering a 150mm thick concrete layer on the blocks alone throughout the entire foundation. I'm of the opinion that this option will stop ingress of moisture from the soil to the superstructure, prevent insects and rodents from moving through the soil to the roof, offer some sort of atabilizatin for the building and of course drastically reduce the cost associaTed with filling the entire foundation with concrete.

I'll like that you please look into my idea and advise me based on your experience.

I do not know your cash constraints but it would be economical to do the flooring with a mixture of sharp sand and fine coarse (3/8" or coarse alone.

Nonetheless I'm sure you know that which you intend doing will be reinforced.

Those are common knowledge i dont sell steel mind you am just a regular buyer so i get small idea and i know for a fact most of the time only 10mm varies in price 16mm and 12mm rods are sold at same price. and mainly that of 10 is cos of transport as a result of it having 133 nos. Also demand and supply for the 10mm and 8mm. i leave other details for those selling nah them sabi price. Regards

It's all about weight and nothing more. Having the same price has nothing to do with it. We may only argue if the price difference is insignificant at all depending on the quantity involved.

These are the various prices in my location a couple of days back when I purchased.
16mm-------3500
12mm-------1900
10mm-------1250
8mm---------1050

Do the calculations as against the quantity per ton and see which favours which and who it favours.
