jidesp: if Laterite filling is 200mm directly below the ground level, does that mean average depth of topsoil excavation to be 200mm as well or it would still be taken as the Average depth of 150mm. You ought to know your excavation depth first before you determine what volume to fill. |

Some of us go back to check on previously installed roofs especially if it's in the same catchment area.
Still checked one done 6years ago last weekend. Although I was just passing and decided to 'branch'. Nice one @ Oga KolaShangOne. There's nothing as good as seeing your past projects still standing firm. It tells good of the contractor. |

spyder880: At bolded, I usually watch out for the changes in every roof I install whenever I came to the area, and I track the changes and ask questions. There was this house I completed in Ebonyi state about 4 years back, we used AYACO roof tiles, not a popular brand but I still see it as fresh and black as we installed them. No changes.
I have gone back to look at some houses we used Wichtech on, no changes yet after 5 years. There was a Wichtech roof which we use as reference in Enugu, that was the first red stone coated tiles I had ever seen, over 10 years now and still red.
As for aluminium roofing, I watch out for the durability of the colours, but what has been my remarkable experience is the types that leak or develop faults more than the others. I have found out that Metcoppo are more likely to develop leaks than any other type of aluminium roof. We check and document these changes and use them as a reference to future decisions. Very very good of you Oga Sypder for looking out for your previous projects. For my clients who can afford and are using wichtech I am happy that it has and is serving it's purpose. |

EgunMogaji: Personally, and knowing what I know now, I would advise to go for a hip roof.
I have two flat roof structures on my site now that will be replaced by hip roof in the future when the materials have expired.
The work of a roof is to keep elements out of the house, and both types will do that. For me, the one to select is the one that will make the owner feel proud architecturally as you pull up after a hard day at work.
Good luck. Going by the bold, please how long does it take the materials to become expired? |

jabolo: I've just taken up this issue with stone coated roof tiles that come with patchwork colors in another thread https://www.nairaland.com/3364135/roofing-sheets-cost-various-types/9#59008454
I wanted to ask a wider audience if any one has any experience with longevity of the colors. Close-up, it seems to me they just applied paint by brush - and they're claiming 50 year warranty.
Any experience?
Thanks . Fallacy of Generalisation. Except the manufacturer and direct distributor no one can give you a near clear response. I do not think there's any builder on NL or else where who have gone back to check on an installed roofing sheet of a client after years of handing over the property keys. Nonetheless in as much as there might be fakes in the market be sure to buy from reputable companies who will sign a warranty/guaranty same as it was imported from the manufacturer. To the best of my knowledge such roof tiles coming from Belgium, Netherlands, Korea meet up their word. |

Emmafly: dear house, thanks for your comments. the oven is still in use I will surely update pics.
two to three days for longer shelve life. when the fish is properly degilled and the oven door is constructed properly to reduce oxygen PAH will be zero. you can use both depending on the construction. you can also use electric stove. it all depends on your preference but I use strictly charcoal and it comes out very perfect and tasty. ovens don't collect fish oil. its a fable that ovens collect fish oil. a properly degilled fish will have no oil except at the tail which is during drying. the big secret about fish oil is that you get it from the degilled remnants of your fish. put the remnants in a big bowl filled with water. the white solid fat layer of the fish remnants will float up. take them, rinse properly, sieve out the water and put the solid fat in a pot. cook until it melts very well but not burnt. take out the shell then that's the oil. I do not encourage farmers to sell it cos it can be used for normal cooking in the home. try it. do u know fifty kg of fish will give you above one litre of fish oil. do you know fish remnants are cooked and fed back to fishes. there fore you are the biggest gainer when you dry your fish cos you throwaway nothing. thanks . Do you salt your fish before drying? You are doing wonderful with the insights. Every practising agro-entrepreneur should know that there is no waste in the business. |

Emmafly: thanks. I will prepare my write up and get back to the house.
though the necessary materials are 1 space. may be at the backyard of your house or farm but must be close to water supply for washing the fish 2. iron . a sound welder will handle this aspect. 3. sand and cement. - a good bricklayer will do this. that's all you need.
1 you need to carve out a 2.5ft by 2.5ft space and tell your brick layer to build a single wardrobe style cubi of about 7 to 8 blocks high. the blocks when setting should be filled internally with filling so that heat can be retained for a longer time. 2. tell your welder to come take measurement of the top to construct an iron plate with a chimney like outlet for excess air to pass out for casting the decking. 3. then tell your bricklayer to cast the decking lightly with the iron plate serving as the base. 4. let the welder take good inner measurement and construct a standing tray hanger of about 10 layers. 5 also let him prepare the trays using good iron wire mesh. 6 let him also take a look and prepare a standard checkers plated door or any door of good quality and ensure that it can tightly close without letting out air unnecessarily. 7 tell your bricklayer to fix the door when it is ready.. 8 let your bricklayer plaster all the inner and outer surroundings of the oven 9 get s standard coal pot.. 10. oven is ready . pictures will follow soon but you can ask questions. . Very very appreciative of your write ups. Will be expecting the pictures also. What's the thickness of the decking casting in inches? Thanks. |

EgunMogaji: This issue of block sizes comes down to acceptable risks.
A 3" block could be made stronger than a 9" block. It all depends on the mix ratio and fastidious attention to detail. How much do you trust Baba Kamilu to follow standards?
Most of the people, and I am in the camp, used 9" blocks for foundation as well as perimeter walls and then switched to 6" blocks for weight savings.
The cost difference between 6 and 9" block is negligible if one considers the total cost of the project.
My favorite are those that compare materials and workmanship from 30 years ago to now. Back in the 80's and before, even ordinary Taxi Driver was very professional in his work. People actually took pride in their work. Now, you find engineers that are nothing more than 3 weeks apprentice.
So please stop comparing old buildings to the mostly shams that are built today. .What exactly is a sham and what qualifies a building to be called a sham? I am certain there are also so called shams also littered in certain parts of europe, etc, etc. As a rule 6"/9" blocks are meant to be used for 2 different types of buildings based on known engineering principles as it concerns construction works. The choice and usage of one over the other depends on the architech/engineer views considering minimum and acceptable risks factors and largely on the client's finances. If you intend to use a 3" block just because it's material strength have been made to beat that of a 6"/9" block going by principles meant for 6/9" blocks without doing your own home work then you would have succeeded in creating your own sham. There's a vast difference between "Driving Licence and Licence to Drive" and that is the thin red line when comparing taxi drivers of old and now. Majority of artisans now did not even attend technical colleges to acquire knowledge, attend to practical classes and get properly certified. What you have now are persons who started as labour/helper transforming into masons. Every Engineer is a 3 week apprentice if he/she does not supervise his/her projects or even know what exactly the supervisory role is all about and equally does not pay attention to details. The major difference between Nigeria and Europe(etc, etc) is that while the former does not value lives and property the latter actually does shows concern towards such. On a general note the basic materials used in building construction works are Portland cement, sharp sand,granite/chippings/coarse sand, laterite, steel rods, woods,nails........and the basic physical and chemical composition of such materials have not changed or detoriated which is why the ideology behind "low cost housing" is still in existence all over the world. Nigerian Perspective: A so called big boy buys an expensive land, spends probably 100Million or more to put his palace in order. He uses POP for his ceilings but when it gets to the gate/security house he uses PVC. The only question I ask is who owns the property? |

spyder880: Why is it that Nigerians like to leave their building to rot? I think there should be regulators to check buildings when they start to get dilapidated. This could pose a danger to human safety if this house fails because of lack of care. In the first picture, you can see the effects of making provision for a tank on the roof. . When a building is showing signs of wear and tear and the occupants do not want to do anything about it, we are certain those occupants do not care about their safety. There is nothing absolutely wrong putting a tank on a roof as long as you do the proper thing for that purpose. After all there some old govt buildings spread across the country with same pattern and they are still intact. |
