There is no universal model for film making. In the Western cinema, you have the European arthouse model of film making as a artistic endeavour. This model of film as art appeals to higher aesthetic considerations but is not commercially viable. Its dependent on state or private foundation funding because its mostly middle and upper class people with artistic inclinations who watch these movies.

You also have the Hollywood model of commercial film making. This is a popular cinema appealling to the masses. European style film makers deride the Hollywood for excessive commercialism and being 'dumbed down' to please the lowest common denominator.

Bollywood has clearly gone down the Hollywood road. Their film industry is self-financed and targets the mass market.

On the other hand, the Francophone African film makers have chose to go the European arthouse route. Their films are mostly financed by grants from European foreign aid budgets, rather than box office takings or DVD sales. These films are watched mostly not in their native African countries but by Westerners with interest in Africa at film festivals and universities in Western countries. Due to the particular vision or understanding of Africa held by the primary target audience in the West, these movies focus on female circumcision, child soldiers, physical abuse and social oppression of African women, corrupt dictatorship and other such themes which a Western audience assumes is the only reality in Africa.

These films win multiple awards at European and world cinema events but in the francophone African countries, the ordinary people don't watch movies by Sembene Ousmane or Gaston Kabore. They watch Bollywood or Nollywood

The choice is up to Nigerian film makers. Those who wish to make movies that they hope will win awards at Western film festivals are free to do so. Good luck to them.

Those who wish to make movies that will actually sell among African masses and will be watched mostly by Africans themselves are equally free to do so. Good luck to them.

Any body who wishes to make movies in African languages is free to do so. Ditto those who choose to make movies in English.

As I noted before, Nollywood is an open market. Any one is free to come in or go out. Willing buyer, willing seller. If any one does not like juju film with Rita Dominic crying by the river, nobody is forcing him to watch. Tunde Kelani is available for him to watch.

No one can dictate to others how to invest their money or how to make films.

Nobody should mourn louder than the owners of a language or culture. If you feel a language or culture is dying but the original owners don't seem to be perturbed, why are you drinking Panadol for their headache?

Most people would agree that the present crop of English language Nollywood movies don't fully represent the ethnic/linguistic diversity of Nigeria. But some people tend to reduce the issue to abusing Igbo movie marketers. The challenge is to go beyond the usual tribal bashing to identify the root causes of the problem and discuss practical and realistic solutions.

Yes, the top marketers of English language movies are mostly Igbo but not all the big Nollywood producers and directors are Igbo. Top non-Igbo producers and directors include -

2. Teco Benson
3. Zack Amata
4. Emem Isong
5. Fidelis Duker

Amaka Igwe is Igbo and a major producer but her movies usually have a diverse plot/script and cast. However, most of the Idumota marketers prefer to finance movies that reflect the language/culture they are familiar with i.e. Igbo but the actors in such movies are not all Igbo e.g. Justus Esiri, Joe Layode, Joke Sylva and Mercy Johnson. Nowadays, we have an influx of Ghanaian actors and actresses in Nigerian films including those reflecting Igbo culture.

It makes no sense to me to reduce this issue to an Igbo conspiracy. There are all sorts of commercial considerations and personal interests that go into deciding what type of films are produced and who will appear in them. Nollywood is an open market with free entry, competition and exit. Any one is free to make movies reflecting 1, 2, 3 or as many languages and cultures as he or she pleases. No one can stop any one else from promoting and selling his or her film.

There is no law that says only Igbo marketers can finance English language movies. There is also no law that says only Igbo producers and directors can make movies in English. Its possible for a tribalistic Igbo film marketer to refuse to sell an English language movie made by a Yoruba producer out of pure tribalism or for whatever reason but he cannot stop the Yoruba producer from making another arrangement.

Even if a cabal of Igbo marketers connive to prevent Yoruba film-makers from selling English language movies through the distribution networks that are controlled by the Igbo marketers, what stops the Yoruba film producer from selling his English language movies through Yoruba marketers? ? Is there are any law that says Yoruba marketers can only sell Yoruba language movies? What stops a Yoruba film producer from finding an Edo, Calabar or Bini marketer to sell his or her movies?

Any body can open a shop anywhere in Nigeria to sell movies. Nobody or no one tribe can force all other Nigerians and Africans to watch films that reflect only its culture. Its funny to read people insinuating that a bunch of Igbo men can come to Lagos and chase Yoruba movie producers and distributors out of business in their own land!

As for how Nollywood projects Nigerian cultures abroad, one immediate practical step would be to improve the quality of sub-titles in Yoruba language movies. I am not Yoruba and I don't speak Yoruba but I do enjoy watching some Yoruba language movies. However, I find the poor subtitling very frustrating. Its either the subtitles are out of sync with the spoken dialogue (sometimes the actors speak for 5-10 mins before any subtitles pop-up) or the translation simply does not make sense. I am then forced to drag a Yoruba speaker to stay with me while watching the movie in order to properly enjoy it or to get the gist of the movie beforehand or afterwards. Improved sub-titles on Yoruba language movies would greatly increase the appeal to non-Yoruba speaker within and outside Nigeria.

From what I've heard as a passenger from air crew and people who work at airports, its not really a daily event or even a routine occurrence per se. But it does happen quite frequently especially when there is the usual PHCN power failure at the airport and the back-up diesel generators are out of service or there is no diesel fuel. So the control tower does not have power supply for the radios thus forcing the pilots and air traffic controllers to resort to GSM phone to land the aircraft.

The key point is that it should not even happen at all. How hard is it to set up an administrative routine to keep back-up generators serviced and fuelled? Na naija we dey hence the usual lapses.

I travel by air regularly within and outside Nigeria so I'd have to be crazy to make excuses for the deliberate refusal by our (mis)rulers to install and/or maintain air navigation equipment and facilities. After all, my own life and that of my family is at stake. Sadly, telephony-guided landing is not uncommon at Nigerian airports, that's just my point. I've no illusions why the test run was embarked upon at this time. I only hope the airport will eventually be completed with full and proper navigational equipment installed and maintained - by whatever government whether ACN, PDP, CPC that gets into power.

In fact, did you actually read any of my previous postings on this thread all? So because I said Asaba airport is a commercially viable project and that the work is near completion, that automatically makes me a PDP or Uduaghan supporter?

BTW, there was a similar scam in one of the Eastern states during the 1983 elections. Some local communities were promised pipeborne water projects as inducement to vote for the incumbent governor. Shortly before the election date, some water pipes and other building materials were dumped near the communities, signboards were erected and some bulldozers, caterpillars and other machines were left near the project sites. The test run is clearly a political gimmick. No one here is fooled by that at all. Uduaghan is clearly using the test run as a vote getter.

In fact, IBB actually pioneered this type of 419 with 'commissioning in phases' of the Ajaokuta steel plant way back in the 80s. OBJ also did same when he commissioned the gas-powered electricity power plants, meanwhile there were no pipelines to carry the gas to the electricity generating plants.

My point about Asaba airport is that the work is actually near completion. The runway is usable. All that remains is the associated infrastructure and support equipment. Hence the hope expressed here that the Uduaghan regime will indeed go beyond mere political gimmicks and actually complete the project.

The runway has been completed, the terminal, control tower and fire service depot are nearly complete. Aircraft can land in daytime. How is this not progress from zero?

How much better are other airports in Nigeria than the Asaba airport even in its uncompleted state? Besides Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, pls tell us which other airports in Nigeria are in a much better state than this. Is it Bauchi airport where goats and sheep are competing with aircraft for use of the runway?

Because Ibori was a rogue who handed over to his cousin does not mean we should not recognize progress when we see it. After, Fashola is constantly praised for his good efforts in Lagos state despite that Tinubu is his godfather who installed him and nearly removed him and the same Tinubu is siphoning over N2bn/month from Lagos state.

Asaba airport is a good initiative, there has been commendable progress in its implementation and the Uduaghan administration should be encouraged to expedite action to complete it. At least Uduaghan had the courage and decency to execute a most viable project that the ethno-supremacist mafioso that surrounded Ibori prevented him from embarking upon.

I'm not an admirer of the Ibori-Uduaghan family show but I must admit this is commendable progress. I only hope Uduaghan will go beyond political gimmick to actually complete the passenger terminal soon. That should not take too much resources. Terminal building can be a basic one for now. Its the other stuff like tower, fire equipment, navigational equipment etc that substantial resources should be devoted to.

Asaba airport is a commercially viable project; it will capture Lagos bound passenger traffic not only from Asaba and environs but even Onitsha and most of Anambra State. In fact, given the sheer volume of traffic through Enugu and Owerri airports which is actually bound for Onitsha and other places in Anambra, Asaba airport should easily rival PH airport for second or third busiest airport after Lagos and Abuja.

Sadly, Asaba airport may heighten the dilemma of the long delayed Oba airport project in Anambra. Is there really much point continuing with it when there is now a new airport barely 15-20 minutes from central Onitsha and 40 minutes from Awka?

Dear Mr. Brunner: First of all, I want to thank Mr. Dele (Supervisor in Arik Airways New York office) who took my call on 09 August 2010 . Per our conversation, I am following up that phone call with a formal letter of complaint regarding my recent experience on Arik Airways.

I have included with this letter a copy of my ticket on your airline, flight 108 and 107, flight cancellation notice given to passengers at Lagos International Airport. Also included with this letter is a copy of my New York itinerary with appropriate email confirmations from orbitz and Delta Airline Ticket & Invoice. Below is a written account of my experience as explained to Mr. Dele over the phone:

On 5th August 2010, my daughter (3 years old) and I arrived Lagos International Airport from Calabar (local airport in Nigeria) at 1730hrs to board a scheduled return International flight to JFK New York with Arik Airways (Arik Air 107). We were informed (alongside other passengers) that the flight was canceled due to aircraft technical issues. We were told to return the next day for a tentative flight that was scheduled to depart by 1800hrs. The Arik Airways Airport Manager, Ms. Adaobi Molokwu then told us that Arik Airways will not provide accommodation & feeding for passengers and will not be liable for connecting passengers who will miss their connecting flight in New York JFK due to the flight cancellation. Ms. Molokwu was extremely uncooperative in assisting passengers or addressing our concerns. The same attitude was exhibited by other Arik Airways staffs that were present. One pregnant Arik Airways staff member said “when we the passengers were tried of complaining, we will return home”. They ignored us, while they all stared at their computer screens. They would not respond to many of our questions. This lack of concern from Arik Airways airport management and staff, angered the passengers greatly and resulted in several heated exchanges. Due to all the frustration from them ignoring us, I became vocal and demanded answers to our concerns by turning the computer monitor away from the closest Arik staff. This led to the staff member jumping to his feet to start a fight with me and the other passengers. In the process I was shoved into a 3ft wide X 4ft long window, which broke and injured me. I was bleeding heavily from my right hand. The commotion inside Arik Airways office alerted the Nigerian Aviation Authority, so they came to find-out what was going on. Arik Airways did not provide any medical treatment for my injuries, the Aviation Authority were the ones that called in a paramedic to clean my cuts.

The Aviation Authority on arrival calmed all of us down and moved all passengers including Ms. Molokwu, to their office and we commenced dialogue for the first time since the ordeal began. During the meeting, Ms. Molokwu still insisted that Arik Airways will not provide accommodation but the Aviation authority reminded Ms. Molokwu that it is the responsibility of the Airline to provide accommodation for all passengers in situations like this. Ms. Molokwu was forced to oblige and agreed to make accommodation available. However, once we were outside the Aviation authority’s office, Ms. Molokwu decided to provide accommodation to passengers that could prove that they entered Lagos airport via a transport mode that originated outside of Lagos . This decision further infuriated the passengers. After several rounds of another heated argument between passengers and Arik Airways Staffs, some of us were finally taken to a sub-standard hotel at about 2200hrs. We were reminded that our flight would depart the next day by 1800hrs tentatively.

The next day 06 August 2010, a bus picked over 30 of us from the hotel, and we arrived the airport at about 1500hrs. When I tendered our U.S. passport (my daughter & I) to the check-in staff, he turned it over to another man that was standing with Ms. Molokwu, who confiscated them. He walked up to me accompanied by Ms. Molokwu and introduced himself as the person in-charge of Arik Airways security. He commanded us to hand over our luggage to him and then follow him. At that point Ms. Molokwu looked at me and my daughter and said “I am going to teach you a lesson”. They took us away from other passengers to a secluded room. While there I was informed by the Arik security officer that a compliant was filed against me for damages to the company’s property. He then told me that I had to pay the equivalent of $1,200 USD (180,000 Naira, Nigerian currency) before we could fly. The Aviation authority official present reminded him that this case was settled yesterday during the meeting we had but the Arik Airways security staff insisted that Ms. Molokwu had lodged a fresh compliant. We were detained for about 3hrs without access to food, or water. Our luggage was taken away from our sight, our passport was held as ransom for us to pay the alleged damages to Arik Airways property.

For fear of my 3 year old daughter becoming too traumatized from the stress we were going through, I offered to get a guarantor for them but Ms. Molokwu accused me of trying to run away by playing tricks on her, she then said she will not let us get away. The Aviation Authority personnel then pleaded with her to be merciful and understand that we are still her customers and that she was making a mountain out of a mole hill. Seeing her rigid position, I then offered to pay her with my credit card but she outwardly laughed at me and said that Arik Airways ‘does not use credit cards’. She said she will only receive cash from me. I reminded her that I used the same card to buy my ticket but she replied by saying that it was done on the internet and not in the office. I scrambled and came up with $700 USD and offered it to her but she turned around and said I was wasting her time. I looked down to my daughter and I could see the pain she was going through. She was uncomfortable throughout our stay in the hotel the previous night, she refused to eat any food offered, and now we were under detention for daring to ask for our right as air passengers.

Out of compassion, Mr. S.M Mamman (Aviation Authority Secretary) gave me $500 USD of his own money (as a loan) just to free us from the abuse Ms. Molokwu was meting out to us. Mr. Mamman however made Ms. Molokwu promise to put us on the flight leaving by 1800hrs for JFK as a condition for receiving the money. She agreed but after her security officer took the $1,200 USD, she then said that It was no longer possible for us to make the 1800hrs flight. I requested a receipt of payment for what she claimed I had damaged but I was told that the agent that gives out receipts was not available. She (Ms Molokwu) then said we had to stay behind and join another Arik flight on Sunday 08Aug10. I requested to be put on a Delta flight that was leaving in 4 ½ hrs but they just ignored my daughter and I. Ms. Molokwu walked away and left us behind with her security officer. I then enquired if it was okay now to release our passport to us which he did. They left us to cater for our transportation and lodging needs. Not one staff of Arik management apologized for all the trouble they put us through; rather we were treated as criminals.

I then took my daughter to Delta booking office and paid $4,397.43 USD (with the same credit card Ms. Molokwu refused to take) for a one way ticket from Lagos – New Orleans . I was reliably informed by another passenger Mr. Verem Turugty who was also a witness to our ordeal at Lagos, that the Arik flight that left Lagos at 1800hrs, arrived JFK by 2330hrs on 07Aug10. Most of the passengers on that flight including him ended up sleeping at the airport due to the arrival time and the lack of out-going flight from JFK at that time. This was further compounded by the lack of Arik Airways representative at JFK to attend to passengers needs. Mr. Turugty told me that he could not find one passenger on that flight that was pleased with the treatment they received. On his part he is willing to testify to the accuracy of the account of event I have narrated.

This is the first time I have flown with Arik Airways. Our departure Flight on 19Jul10 was about 2hrs late to depart JFK, which meant that, our flight was late in arriving Lagos , Nigeria . We ended up missing our local connecting flight with Aero contractor to Calabar. We were stranded in Lagos that night and had to pay $233 USD to acquire another flight the next day for Calabar. The cancellation of the return flight on 05Aug10 meant that our connecting flight from New York – New Orleans was missed, which cost us $299.80 USD to purchase. The stress and strain this ordeal has taken on my family is unimaginable; my wife was on the phone all night & day on 05Aug & 06Aug and was forced to take 2days off from work (losing over $750 USD in revenue plus cost of local/international calls), talking with different travel agents trying to arrange flights for us. My parent’s in-laws and parents in Nigeria were very worried about our fate especially when they couldn’t reach me by phone while we were under detention. Financially we are at a loss of over $7000 USD plus the pain and suffering we have experienced. My 3 year old daughter told my wife on our return that “she does not want to visit Nigeria again”. Her statement broke my heart because she was very excited to see her grand parents before our departure. I don’t know what my wife and I will do to help her get over the psychological damage she went through, we are also at a loss reggaerding how to recover financially and emotionally from this sad event. I will never wish this experience on my worst enemy.

Well said. This crude stereotyping is a major reason why many people dislike Nollywood. At least for me. But the fact that most of these movies are made by Igbo producers and directors somehow takes the sting out of it; much the same way that black Americans don't mind jokes by black comics which play upon black behavioural stereotypes but they get very offended when the same joke is cracked by a white person or an African immigrant.

Being Igbo myself, I find it easier to endure such Nollywood nonsense from Gabosky than from a Tunde Kelani. That's just human nature; its easier to bear insult from your own kin. I have friends and relatives from Akwa Ibom/Cross River and know first hand how deeply they resent the constant stereotyping of their people as Nigeria's domestic servants - never mind that they have produced many world class intellectuals and leaders in many fields of endeavour in Nigeria. And its particularly hurtful to them the way their women are constantly portrayed as nymphos when in fact, sexual deviancy is to be found among all tribes in Nigeria.

Its not their fault if their culture takes a more open, practical or realistic attitude to sex than the hypocritical prudery that is common among most Nigerian tribes. Whereas the women of all those tribes do exactly the same thing that the Ekaettes are accused of. Or even worse.

A major personal grouse which I have against these Ekaette/sex 'jokes' is that it trivializes the reality of sexual violence against domestic workers in Nigeria. When most people hear that a househelp from that area is pregnant, 99% of the time, they jump to the conclusion that she somehow seduced the master. Relatively few stop to consider that the girl may actually be the victim of sexual violence.

Its always easier to stereotype other people.

I strongly support the NBC ban because the stupid song stereotypes women from Akwa Ibom and Cross River as housemaids and sexual deviants. The moronic singer could not find anything more inspiring than perverted sexual fantasies about Efik and Ibibio girls, abi?

The bigots, tribalists and hypocrites defending the mumu artiste's right to defame an entire ethnic group's female population would be up in arms if an artiste produced a song defaming the women of their tribe but they find it funny when its another tribe's women who are defamed. I personally will not find it funny if a Yoruba fuji artiste released a song portraying Igbo women as sexual deviants.

Ekaette is actually a beautiful name - the meaning is equivalent to Nneka in Igbo but because of all the bigots and tribalists and haters in Nigeria, most young girls from Akwa Ibom and Cross River refuse to bear that name any more.

Based on bitter experiences with HITV, any thing connected with urfriend is bound to be a disaster

I have a PS3 and an Elite. I installed usb fans to the rear and right side of the Elite so I have no problems with RROD.
I feel the PS3 is a superior console in terms of design; I hate the fact that the 360 cannot take both the hdmi cable and the component cables at once. On the PS3,  I output audio with the component cables on my Home Theatre and Video on the HDMI soince TV speakers dont really do justice and it kills me that I cant do same on the 360 cos the component cable is so bogus and wouldn't allow the hdmi in. Add Bluray playback and it's a sure killer app cos I'm a movie buff

When it comes to games, I used to prefer the 360 for the number of quality titles; GOW 1&2, Halo3, Mass effect, Bioshock, etc but now they arent many exclusives billed for the future on the 360. Uncharted 2 is the best game I ever played and I'm looking forward to God Of War 3 and GT5.

In conclusion, I love both consoles and if you are a true gamer, u gotta cop both systems. Word!!

There's an HDMI cable adaptor for 360 available on amazon.com which allows you to connect HDMI to your TV for video and an optical cable to your HT receiver for audio. I'm not sure if it also allows the component cable to be used at the same time. Here's the link -

Have you had any issues with playing Uncharted 2 on your PS3? Some people claimed that a firmware update needed to run that game on PS3 ended up bricking their consoles or it removed the blu-ray/DVD functionality afterwards.

used it for long lengths of time. i feel 4 hours of gameplay a day should not affect the console. my 25 kobo.

Thanks so much my brother for this reassuring info. The Xbox will not be used more than 2-3 hours a day.

I have PS3(160GB), Wii and now getting Xbox. There may be one feature or the other on each console that makes it attractive for that purpose. Each one has its strengths. I really don't the see the point in unnecessary arguments of trying to prove which console is superior.

a question - have you had any episode of over-heating with using Xbox 360? Will it help to have the AC on all the time when it is used?

Alternatively, will using a standing fan or a desk fan blowing on the console when in use help to prevent over-heating?
