@ edoyad - contrary to what you think, I'm not advocating snobbery or exclusivity or such like. My point is simply that HITV lack a certain finesse or polish in terms of the presentation of their product, the kind of finishing touch that highlights a product as well made or presented in comparison with other similar products. Of course, I know very well that pay TV business is one that relies on a mass market rather than selective marketing to a few high networth individuals. The larger the customer base of a pay TV operator, the higher the revenue stream+profits.

But in a crowded market with so many competitor pay TV and satellite operators offering different levels of quality, your product needs to stand out for a customer to feel that he or she is getting value for their money. Subair and his partners/investors should have done their homework before rushing into pay TV business and offering a product that looks like NTA network broadcasts.

Thanks my brother! That's what I've been hearing generally. I'm arranging with a friend in the states to ship a 360 Elite black model to me. He will definitely check the manufacturing date to ensure its a new model with Jasper chip.

HiTV's business model is a classic example of the typical 'proudly Nigerian' mentality i.e. 'me too' and 'get-rich-quick'
Subair and cohorts saw how much patronage DSTV was getting and (like typical Nigerians), they assumed that football is the magical money spinner. They borrowed money from banks and dived into pay TV business with the idea that Nigerians will overlook poor quality grainy broadcasts and lousy customer service just because we like soccer so much. They just simply assumed that since many Nigerians are football crazy, they would make a fortune and overtake DSTV in shortest time.

What the get-rich-quick dolts at HITV did not realize is that while soccer alone will get Dad to cough out to install DSTV, it is the movies and cartoons that will make Mom and kids to prevail on Dad to keep paying every month for the premium bouquet on DSTV. DSTV is a complete entertainment package that is ideal for a family man. You watch your sports and news while the wife and kids watch their own channels; even better if you have dual view decoder.
Right now, many homes are forced to have both DSTV and HITV just so that the wife and kids can enjoy movies and entertainment plus news and documentaries for the man while the bobo watches sports on HITV. What a redundant waste.

Meanwhile, DSTV have realized that football alone is not a do or die business. Despite losing the EPL and UCL rights, DSTV is still surviving on its movie, news, documentary and other entertainment channels and even waxing stronger. They will not collapse simply because they refused to pay exorbitant prices for EPL and UCL.

HITV has none of the features that make cable TV interesting. No programme guide. No broadcast schedule. Nothing. Zilch. Just to broadcast the sports feeds from the foreign broadcasters. They look just like NTA or LTV. Cheap and tacky. No class at all. No wonder their head office is at Ebutte Metta instead of VI or Ikeja. The owners of HITV are razz and that's why they feel comfortable staying among their razz people and broadcasting cheap, tacky nonsense.

Its just a matter of time before they collapse like Setanta and GTV. Hopefully, DSTV will take back the rights and I will happily dash away my nonsense HITV decoder and dish.

Guys, I'm thinking seriously about getting an Xbox. I've done reading up on the web and its claimed that the new version of Xbox, the Arcade is less likely to have RROD because of the new Jasper chip esp compared with Elite or older models.

Is this Arcade version now available in Nigeria? Does any one here have it? How reliable is it?

Also are there competent technicians in Nigeria that can handle RROD problem?

Not true at all. Which part of Igboland are you from sef? I personally know 2 guys who married their sister-in-law i.e. brother's wife younger sister. As long the couple are not BIOLOGICALLY related, there is no impediment to their marrying each other.

But seriously, I read online that the new Arcade model of the Xbox 360 comes with a new chipset called 'Jasper' that supposedly runs cooler than the older chip, the 'Falcon' and so is less prone to RROD. Apparently, overheating is said to be the major cause of RROD.

So what do you guys advise? Too risky? Are there people that can repair Xbox in naija?

I already have the PS3 phat so I don't see any reason to buy the slim. Its same thing just smaller. I also have a Wii. I'd like to experiment with Xbox just to compare the three. Do you know if Xbox has universal voltage like PS3 or is it according to the country in which it is sold? My guys in US can get it for me but I'm not sure if I need to use a step down transformer with it or just plug it straight into a stabilizer like my PS3.

But why no backwards compatibility with PS2 games? This is the dealbreaker!!!

So apart from the price and the compact size, what's the incentive that will convince those who have not already spent big bucks to buy PS3 to invest in it now?

If Sony had the good sense to make PS3 slim backwards compatible with PS2 games, many if not most PS2 console owners will rush to upgrade.

I am seriously considering my subscription renewal for Hitv. My yesterday experience with DSTV was not good at all. I had abandoned my Hitv strong decoder for about 2 months now. But the inability to watch any football match Tuesday and Wednesday night was just too much to bear. Now, I need to upgrade my strong decoder so that I can renew my subscription.
I just feel I don't have a choice, until a HUMANE Company takes the rights from Hitv.

6k subscription is outrageous enough for football only; the extremely poor picture quality is a pure insult upon injury!!!

Imagine after squeezing out my hard earned 6k to pay for HITV subscription only to watch what looks like viewing NTA network transmission from Maiduguri back in the 1980s!

I'm wishing and praying that MYTV can snatch the EPL and UCL rights from HiTV!!! At least, the picture quality is far better on MYTV.

Since Sony has crashed the price of PS3 and brought out PS3 slim, I'm sure Microsoft will be forced to equally crash the price of Xbox so who knows, it may go down to $100 by Xmas

BBC NEWS - Sony slims PlayStation 3 console

Electronics giant Sony has announced a new, slimmer version of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console.

The sleek machine is around a third lighter, a third slimmer and uses a third less power than the original, said Kaz Hirai of the firm.

Speaking at the Games Com conference in Cologne, Germany, he said the console would hit shops in early September.

It will also be around £50 cheaper than the original 2006 machine, costing £249.99 in the UK.

It will cost $299 in the US, 299 euros in Europe and 29980 yen in Japan.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—They’ve never walked along the dusty roads of Lagos, Nigeria, or set foot in an extravagant mansion in Ghana.
But fans of African movies now being sold in South Florida say they find themselves glued to their screens because in so many ways, the faraway continent feels so familiar.

“It’s everything from the drapes hanging at the entrance door in the kitchen to the way people go down on their knees before saying good morning to their elders,” said Hermante Leonard, who sees similarities to her Haitian culture in the movies.

Despite mediocre sound quality and a lack of special effects, Nigerian films are growing in popularity in South Florida, especially among Caribbean natives. In strip plazas in Lauderdale Lakes, Miramar, West Palm Beach and North Miami, vendors who used to specialize in movies from Jamaica and Haiti said they’ve recently switched their focus to African films because of the demand. “These movies are entertaining,” said Fay Bailey, a retired nurse from Jamaica. “They showcase the beauty and strength in Africa, and there’s more laughter than anything.”

Fans say they help satisfy a need here, where mainstream films starring black actors are few and far between. They like the intelligent dialogue, relative absence of nudity and the prominence given to areas of Nigeria and Ghana not usually seen on Western television.
The Nigerian film industry, often referred to as “Nollywood,” churns out about 1,500 new movies a year, making it the third largest in the world, after Hollywood and India. Industry analysts estimate it grossed $286 million last year, compared with $2 billion brought in by Indian films.
African movies are performed in English with story lines that center on infidelity, family cohesiveness, folklore and spirituality. Unlike Hollywood blockbusters, however, these films are usually made on a shoestring budget of about $20,000, and sell here for about $10.
Caminito Rose, who is originally from Haiti, began selling the movies about four months ago in his North Miami store, Lionel Productions African Movie Mall. He said on an average Saturday he sells about 400 Nigerian movies.

Fans say it’s not the price but the story lines that keep them wanting more. Hopeton Green, of Lauderdale Lakes, said he buys them because “the backgrounds reminded me so much of Jamaica. The way the people dressed, their demeanor. The accent was the only thing that really marked the difference.”

Leonard said she became hooked after watching “Blood Sisters,” about a bad sister trying to destroy the good sister’s life. So about a year ago, she started selling the movies at her music stores, Se Mizik Lakay, in Lauderdale Lakes and Oakland Park.
Other retailers say their clients introduced them to the films.

“I started selling them about two months ago because people came to me and asked me for certain titles,” said Jerome Altidort, manager at VS Music Store, in West Palm Beach, which specializes in Haitian music and movies.

Nigera’s movie industry got its start in the early 1990s, when Nigeria was undergoing a financial crisis and foreign films were scarce. Experts say violence at that time kept many Nigerians from going to local theaters.

To fill the void, local directors began filming with hand-held cameras and producing movies on a shoestring budget. The video films, as they’re called, often have sequels and, in some cases, up to four or five parts.

Some movie watchers say they block out time to watch the films, which are usually about three hours long, because once they get into Part 1, it’s difficult not to watch the sequel.

“I know it sounds (like a) cliche, but you really feel like you’re experiencing your roots,” said Opal Brown, of Pembroke Pines.
Industry specialists say easier access to the films is increasing their popularity, especially in New York City, Washington, D.C., and South Florida.
“The distributors of these video films don’t have to rely on a huge marketing strategy,” said Onookome Okome, author of the upcoming book “Nollywood: Cinema, Culture, Society.”

But piracy is also a big issue and local retailers say it’s hard to compete with the copiers who sell at rock-bottom prices.
“I used to have a lot more customers, but the piracy is slowing things down,” Leonard said.
Back at African Movie Mall, patrons Fay Bailey and Cherley Sanon are debating which story lines are more intriguing.
Sanon, who is Haitian, watched her first film about three months ago in a hair salon. She now has 20 titles and said she likes the movies that show off the affluent Nigerian neighborhoods.

Not so for Bailey, who countered, “I like the movies that bring me right into the villages.”
