PoliticsRe: The Best Of Patience Jonathan Speeches 2011 by blackweaver(m): 2:50pm On Dec 30, 2011
i don't know why people are defending the woman sef, even leaders of "civilized" countries have been made fun of
(if you don't believe me just watch the daily show on cnn) and sometimes for less "shortcomings". The fact still remains that we
have freedom of speech. And besides when someone in such a position makes such grammatical blunders it's an embarassment -
at least to the youth if no one else. Believe me if michelle Obama made a grammatical error like the ones that first lady made, it will be in the news

na by force make you marry for church?
just do the registry stuff and be done with it; you don;t need a church wedding for God to recognise it and the law recognises registry

what's your problem sef? are you not a football fan? when your favorite team is playing don't you ignore everything else until end of half or game over? even if you don't find a way around, get her to plan around her watching time.
And what's this about the house suffering? what if she travelled for a month? you want to tell me that the house will suffer for a month? abeg stop acting like a child; you didn't marry her to be your maid, you guys come to an agreement about how things would be handled and stop whining
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 4:56pm On Dec 15, 2011
@4ller, you too dey vex for this mint sha; anyway on a different note what is the kernel message when enable wireless?
you can try "dmesg -c" first to clear your kernel messages with the wireless off, then when you've put it on, try dmesg
you can try googling up whatever error message you see (otherwise instead of clearing up your kernel messages you
can just use dmesg tail). I once had a similar problem on a laptop (i think it was hp630 or so; when i googled up the error
i found out that it was because of some file that was "missing" in the etc folder. Once i put a blank file in the appropriate
folder the thing started working. what happens if you type ifconfig {wlan0} up (assuming wlan0 is your wireless interface)
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 11:20pm On Dec 14, 2011
unfortunately, we can't help you there; you have to decide which one you really like.
I started linux with "Basic Linux" - a slackware based linux distro that came in 2 floppies,
despite the fact that it wasn't recommended for beginners. over time i have tried many
more distros and do not stick strictly to one.

If you're familiar with dual booting you might try a few of the most popular ones: ubuntu, mint,
fedora, opensuse, debian, mandriva etc and decide which one you really like. try those with kde
by default and those with gnome by default. My advice, unless you're an os junkie like me, you might
want to limit yourself to no more than 4 distros

ComputersRe: Processor Speed Or Ram(random Access Memory): Which Determines Speed Of A Pc? by blackweaver(m): 10:24pm On Dec 08, 2011
you mean increase the speed of the processor? well it depends, some motherboards have their cpus built into them, in which case you can't upgrade the cpu. Branded pcs too tend to be a little mpre difficult to upgrade (in nigeria) 'cos you have to get a compatible processor by the same manufacturer. Bottom line: unless you know what you're doing (especially if your pc wasn't assembled) don't bother upgrading your cpu
ComputersRe: Processor Speed Or Ram(random Access Memory): Which Determines Speed Of A Pc? by blackweaver(m): 11:14am On Dec 08, 2011
all4naija:
The processor is the first and follow by the RAM. The combination is the actual determination. The microprocessor in Ghz(as in OP comment) is the processor speed and very important during the process of carrying out any function in a computer, likewise the RAM(Random Access Memory) which is a place where temporal execution of instructions are stored before being transfered to the CPU(Central Processing Unit)or the processor - the speed matter a lot to the working time of your system. Without RAM your system can't operate and the same thing with the processor - that is, both of them are needed at a reasonable speed for your computer to carry out its functions properly. However, a i7 microprocessor with 4gb RAM would do a job at better speed  than core 2 duo system with 6gb RAM. So, the microprocessor speed is the core speed while the RAM is temporal speed in a way.

When buying a system the most important thing to look out for first is the processor speed because a high speed processor will definitely need a large size RAM accompanied with it before any other things.
I agree, especially since it's easier to upgrade ram than cpu; however at 4gb/6gb, you probably have more ram than you'll need for most tasks so you can enjoy more of the full potential of the cpu but at 512mb vs 1gb you are working with limited resources; even netbooks come with at least 1gb ram. Even then buy the higher cpu pc and then upgrade your ram
ComputersRe: Processor Speed Or Ram(random Access Memory): Which Determines Speed Of A Pc? by blackweaver(m): 11:02am On Dec 08, 2011
Digriz is also right, cache memory plays a vital play too; basically you have 3 types of "memory" or storage in a computer: cache memory
which is the smallest and is closest to the cpu (ususally comes with the cpu too), then we have the ram which is the main memory then the
hard disk (Actually we also have gpu and video ram, but if you don't use graphics intensive applications they don't matter so much. Most pcs with
integrated graphics cards allocate some portion of the ram as video ram). The cache memory is the fastest but also the most expensive,
the more your cache memory the better the performance compared to a pc with similar processor (or even slightly faster) and ram but smaller cache. To put it in another light, the cache memory is the reason why in the old days a pentium was much faster than a celeron with the same cpu speed; the pentium had more cache memory.

Are you guys saying neither determines the speed and they need to work together.
Be that as it may, when buying a gaming laptop, what should one look at for? We know gaming software are the most sophisticated softwares
you want to complicate issues abi? i'm not a gamer but i think i know a few things such as: high cpu is important, high ram is important though for playing games not quite, HOWEVER you must have a good graphics card that also has high cpu (usually called GPU) and high ram (video memory), but in any case 512mb ram will still be too small - anything less than 2gb is less than adequate though 1gb is barely manageable
ComputersRe: Processor Speed Or Ram(random Access Memory): Which Determines Speed Of A Pc? by blackweaver(m): 10:08am On Dec 08, 2011
Wallie:
Somewhat true but the question is to what extent? The first computer listed has 512 MB, which is a lot on any computer,
512mb is NOT a lot on any computer running vista or later, you're just setting yourself up for some major frustration, in fact on post XP machines 512mb is the minimum required ram - not the recommended
ComputersRe: Processor Speed Or Ram(random Access Memory): Which Determines Speed Of A Pc? by blackweaver(m): 10:01am On Dec 08, 2011
i'd like to use another analogy, you have 2 full tanks one is has 5000 liters capacity, the other has 2000 liters capacity; they have taps of different diameters, the diameter of the tap with 2000 liters is twice the diameter of the tap of tank with 5000 liters; which one will fill a 10 liter bucket faster?

This is how i'll put it. Generally cpus are faster than ram (actually cpus also have what is known as cache memory which is faster than ram but that is not what this topic is about). Anyway generally ram tends to be a potential bottleneck; even though the 2.3ghz cpu is faster less ram will limit the performance

so in answer to your question, the 1.7ghz processor will do better, a 1ghz cpu with 2gb ram will do even better still because like i said before the amount of ram is the main limiting factor in all the scenarios (unless you're sunning windows 2000 or older)
ComputersRe: No Debian Linux In Da Whole Of Computer Village? by blackweaver(m): 4:46pm On Dec 07, 2011
by address i mean area where you live or area where you usually are - not necessarily your exact house address
ComputersRe: No Debian Linux In Da Whole Of Computer Village? by blackweaver(m): 4:44pm On Dec 07, 2011
what you need to do is give a shout out to linux users, give your address, maybe you can find someone who doesn't live too far away who you can meet and give you the cd(s)

Alpha aahh! Was going to say that can't be right, after all we all know their version numbers are year.month. Well for me i think i'll wait for the distribution release myself; haven't even had time to try out the new mint yet
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:37pm On Nov 27, 2011
wow so soon?
i really thought it would be at least december before they brought out a new release seeing that they already brought out a development release this month
18.) Do not partition the hard drive. Windows XP's NTFS file system runs more efficiently on one large partition.
i'm not quite convinced about that - especially in terms of speed; i believe when you try to access files in a partition, because of fragmentation the larger the hard drive the more the time to locate all the parts of the file. However i admit that it does use up more space too. That said, there's absolutely no way i'll get a hard drive and not repartition; none of my personal hard drives have less than 5 partitions (although they're not all windows partitions). Even my flash drive has 2. Personally i recommend that you have at least 2 partitions - one for your windows system files and the other for not so important files and maybe backup too

At the end of the day each to his own opinion - i don't expect you to adopt mine but i won't adopt yours on that particular count
ComputersRe: How To Repair A Spoilt/crashed Hard Drive by blackweaver(m): 11:38am On Nov 26, 2011
it's a hardware problem alright; i'm not sure you can get it fixed by discussing on a forum, you'll probably have to consult a specialist - and then only to copy the data - the hard disk is gone. Although, i heard someone talk about putting it in the freezer for some time; i've seen that kind of comment on forums about similar problems. I can't vouch that it works though, i've never tried it myself
ComputersRe: Wazobia Linux: A New Nigerian Linux Distro! by blackweaver(m): 11:33am On Nov 26, 2011
Another thing, the availability of nigerian languages in a linux distro is not a new thing; i think u remember seeing yoruba language pack in the first version of ubuntu i ever used which was in 2005; perhaps these people are doing a good thing but i can't help observing that a lot of the people bashing this distro are people who i know to be regular linux users. If you have difficulty getting people who are used to linux to adopt your distro, how do you want to get those who aren't
