ashawoism abi? u never see anytin o; i sure say even shuttleworth no dey use only ubuntu, e fit get debian and fedora as you dey look am; any way me sha no be only linux i dey use o, i get netbsd for my netbook too; thinking of installing either freebsd or dragonfly; tried installing solaris twice but after seeing my 17 - partition hard disk reduced to 9 partitions both times and having to use testdisk to recover them back, i've decided to stick to bsds

my advice is, if you want to try out kde by installing in another partition, you migh as well try out another distribution, maybe fedora, pclinuxos or mandriva or opensuse - which by the way are rpm -based distributions (which means that the method of installing packages is different); some people here might be becoming expert ubuntu users without knowing much about other distributions; or you can try kde mint, chakra or mepis (mint and mepis are deb based oses). chakra's based on arch linux; unless you know what you're doing stay away from arch and slackware; arch installation cd just takes up to a point where you can boot into command line; you want gui you have to install over the internet. the good thing about it though is that it's a rolling release which means you don't have to download a recent iso to get the latest version. Slackware too doesn't have a live install; infact if you want to have gui you must download cd2 iso; cd3 will give you kde on the other hand if you realy want to know how slackware feels using a live install you can try out zenwalk or vector linux. 4llerbe has tried out slax so he knows how un-user-friendly it is

@4llerbe i noticed your last post was blocked, but what's this thing about having to dial up from command line? just use network manager for gnome and kppp for kde (though i prefer using wvdial myself). Like i said, whatever works for you; me i'm used to usin numerous window managers (not just kde and gnome) so it's not a hassle at all and sometimes you might find that some particular program does some job for you better than the one native to the window manager in use; but like i said, whatever works for you

@lynx sorry i haven't actually tried installing kde on ubuntu -at least not in this version; i did in the previous version (10.10 netbook edition) when i was trying to install k3b

Exactly my point, if you didn't use the package manager, you would have to either create a new partition
and install there or reinstall your whole os; if/when you want to revert back, at the least you'd have to restart your computer; at the worst you'd have to format and reinstall; this way all you have to do is logout and swith desktops

@4llerbe, kde uses kde&qt libraries; you wouldn't have any duplication and you can always decide which libraries, apps you want to upgrade anyway AND you'll use more disk space; and besides more apps means more choices; for instance even in ubuntu i aslways use vlc and it uses qt libraries
anyway whatever works for you

i hope non of you ubuntu users is actually thnking of downloading kubuntu (unless you are low on disk space); just download kde using synaptic and you can try it out to see if it's as difficult as you've heard

@brain, like i said, just install kde instead of downloading the whole kubuntu os

@lynx perhaps it's the graphics effects issue; that's another thing i like about kde; you can actually use a power profile that automatically disable graphic effects once on battery power,, which reduces battery usage

all the posts i've made on nl in fact all my internet activity in the last 11/2 years has been on my netbook; the truth is any distro will do just fine though in some cases you may have to disable graphic effects
@4llerbe like i said, i haven't used kubuntu in a long time, maybe they're much better no but i don't have the nerve to try it out at the moment - besides why would i need to types of the same version of a linux distro? if i really want to try kde on ubuntu i'll just download it using the package manager, that way if i don't like it i can always revert back to the old

@4llerbe, what's so hard about kde? personally i think it's more like windows than gnome;
as a long time user of kde - though not kubuntu (actually it's ubuntu that got me starting to like gnome) i remember appreciating how much konqueror was like ie (pre 7) where you could use it both as a web browser and a file manager - i think you still can which can be convenient.
i have 2 major issues with kde4.x, one has to do with my hardware - nothing as sweet as bigrovars, i use a netbook and i sometimes find response a bit slow. the other is the plasma(?) toolbar; changing the color is not as simple as it was in kde3.x; why do i have to make an svgz file and modify and , why not at least include an optional feature which can help me automate it so all i have to do is select my color and it just changes?
by the way beginning from kde 4.5, kde comes also has a netbook layout -and i don't need to logout to use it either, i've attached a screenshot. when it comes to music playes i generally prefer xmms or audacious but barring that i'll go with amarok (don't like rythmbox for anything). for burning cds i'm yet to see any software that comes close to k3b on the linux end (at least in my opinion)

well since this isn't about which is better but rather about which is prefered i'll stop here but bottom line is kde's more configurable than gnome; some ot the things you can do from the system settings in kde, you might have to modify a text file to achieve from gnome
at least that's my opinion

@ lynx at the login screen, after you've selected your username, b4 entering ur password if you look at the taskbar below from the left you'll see regional settings (mine says english nigeria), keyboard layout (mine says usa ) and session (should be showing ubuntu) respectively. Click on the scroll button to the right of the session and in the menu that comes up select "Ubuntu classic", enter your password and login. Sorry no images, haven't figured out how to take a screensshot without being logged on

well i hope you guys know that you can still revert to the classical interface if you want which is what i do since i thing i work faster that way

@doubleN well maybe you're right, however cost is still a mojor deterrent; if you could send me a mac foc i will join you in broadcasting all the wonderful merits of the system, in the mean time those of us who aren't willing to shell out over x10 minimum wage, we'll just chill with our pcs and enjoy our free linux os

abi o and this way i don't have to worry about the consequences of tweaking my hardware to my content;
last weekend i upgraded my netbook to 500gb (from 160gb) now if i had a mac would i have the liver to even try something like that?
besides with linux we don't have to fear viruses any more than on macs - and we can try many more oses without fear of voiding our warranty (or care for that matter seeing that it doesn't cost anywhere near the price)

ok here's my own take on this issue:  someone who cheats on you while you're still dating is likely to cheat on you after you're married (especially if it's a guy) so if it happened to me. i will wave by-bye to that relationship and move on; however that's just my own view on this issue, the bottom line is, are you still willing to continue the relationship? it's your life, no one should tell you how to live it

yeah NEW movies, not so new movies that the whole world has watched is less likely to cause those issues; i'm not sure but i suspect that those people get disconnected when the intellectual property owners complain

@lynx, just wondering, why download the alternate cd? from what i read @ ubuntu and i quote:

The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

setting up automated deployments;
upgrading from older installations without network access;
LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
installs on systems with less than about 256MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

so if what you see when booting is not what you expect, this might be why

for me o as long as i'm not downloading anything illegal i can use transmission and i never mask (for that matter i've used it to download some not so legal stuff before)
@ lynx for the unity interface, well i've been using the ubuntu netbook edition since 10.10 and there's the option to use either the netbook mode or the desktop mode so you shouldn't have to install anything
as for gnome3 i'll wait till some distro i'm interested in comes out with it before trying it out, i have fedora14 and it's still using gnome2.x i also have opensuse11.4 but it's the kde version
anybody else here use slackware? i'm beginning to think the the idea of bringing out a new release on the same day with ubuntu was deliberate, but i'm not sure it's going to make a difference, their servers are still going to be bogged down; they say we should download via torrent

i bought a 500gb hard disk some weeks ago and was planning to switch hard disks but have been waiting for the release of my 2 favorite distros, have already installed fedora14 and opensuse 11.4, also downloaded solaris express 11 but i'm not sure iwant to do a usb install like i did for the other 2; will also install debian freebsd later
anyway that's my update for now

maybe your download doesn't complete; if you have a pc with bluetooth you can try downloading to pc and then send to your phone; or if you have a data cable you can try copying to your phone after downloading to pc

what i mean is how do you try to install it? do you try installing from the internet or do you copy to your phone using your data cable or what?

what exactly have you tried?

for me google chrome comes first, firefox next; and now that there's a google chrome plugin that allows browser integration for download managers it's even better
