@seun i won't exactly call ubuntu debian; yes it's based on debian, using the same packaging style and all but there are some fundamental differences; for one ubuntu has 2 releases every year, debian may take up to 2 years to release a version and debian's main packages are generally not cutting edge (i.e. usually not the latest). Because of this debian is one of the most stable linux distros, the only versions of ubuntu i can put on a similar comparison would be the ubuntu lts (long term support) versions

debian ke?in computer village? you go try o, but like someone said, go ubuntu or mint instead, most of the packages you want you can find with these distros and to an extent they may even install some debian packages; i know there's a version of mint linux that's compatible with debian unstable

@poster are you crazy? ok just kidding; can i use it to manage my phone calls and sms, block unwanted calls, sync my ipad with itunes server (i wish, i actually don't have an ipad). Besides what exactly is it? a hardware device or software? if software does it run on linux etc. Basically i think we don' thave enough info on what you're selling to us

i think the big problem with google+ is that people don't know what to do with it, then for someone like me i don't have nearly as many friends on google+. Somehow i feel google+ is more serious like while fb is a place awhere i just relax wit my frineds; which is such a pity 'cos i prefer google+ features to fb. For one thing i prefer cIrcles to lists; when i joined facebook years ago i created my own lists. Now they've added functionality to their lists so that one can filter conversations but they also added some annoying default lists that i don't know how to delete. With g+ i can delete all the default circles and create mine from scratch. Then again fb is always changing their interface and causing confusion but my biggest annoyance with fb is that "x and y are now friends" and with the number of friends i have it is very annoying. As far as i'm concerned the only thing fb really trumps g+ on is the fact that fb has an existing ecosystem that a lot of people are familiar with. But that's me

ok checking one of the forums it seems there'll be 2 gnome-based versions of mint, one based on gnome 2.32 and the other on gnome 3.x, we'll see how that works out

@4ller i may be wrong, but i'm not sure mint will go the unity/gnome3 way just yet, especially since they are sort of tending more towards debian now, will try to check it up just to be sure

all right all right stop your squabbling; we all know using ubuntu alone is not a good test of any software
(or at least i'd like to believe we all know), they usually do a lot of modifications so that a program - even
one as simple as the terminal on ubuntu might be a lot different from the vanilla version of the software.
Anyway to clarify this i think it would be a good idea to get another distro that uses gnome3.x (not ubuntu based)
and try it out to have an idea of how gnome3 is on another distro. I tend to agree with 4ller about not being able to right-click on the desktop at least i experienced that with fedora 15 but then again perhaps they used just gnome shell. Anyway opensuse12.1 is going to be released in 28 days time; traditionally i've used kde in opensuse but i think this time around ii'' go for gnome just to see how it is

@4ller, haven't used a 3g modem in a vm, but yes my swift usb modem internet works on my guest os. One thing you could try is to first disable mobile broadband in the network manager settings in ubuntu, perhaps you'll be able to connect in your guest windows then

and not finding anyone who used such methods i decided to bust, although there
was one solution someone used that worked, something about someone having a
similar modem that came with support for linux and uploading the drivers online; problem
is would have to use an old kernel (2.6.28-xx i think) if i used only ubuntu and/or mint i
might try it but i use so many distros (slackware, pclinuxos, fedora, opensuse aming others)
and i may decide i want to work with some of the others for a while; would that mean i won't
be able to use them? at least this way i just create a virtualbox disk in a windows partition
and when i want to go online i just start my vm using the vboxdisk
(where i've already installed windows and can connect)

actually this one's worse than you think; problem's there's no driver for linux for the device,
went to the manufacturer's site, googled my eyes out; apparently the stingy people refused to release specifications of the device so the open source can't even write a driver for it in linux;
had already resigned myself to browsing only in windows (which would have been very inconvenient) when i realised i could just connect through a guest windows os but that means when no light my battery will drain faster

i actually meant Fedora 15 distro release (not beta); they were the first distro to bring out gnome3.x in a distribution release and men that thing was just a pain; had to get some 3rd party tool just to change font size (can't even remember if i succeeded in changing the wallpaper). Will start downloading my usual stuff once i setup my internet on oneric (for anyone who decides to use swift networks with the single-user usb data card, warning as at the last time i checked there was no linux driver for it, presently using a windows guest os in virtualbox as my gateway - talk about using a hammer to kill a fly)

oh really? i didn't know that, no wonder we don't have the classic interface anymore. have you tried gnome3.x on any other distro? i tried the one that came with the most recent release of fedora and believe me, there are things i find really annoying there. it's all this tablet-ish interface thingy where you can almost not get anything done without a mouse

@all4naija which gnome? 2 or 3? 'cos on my opinion gnome3 is just as annoying; worse right-clicking on the desktop doesn't even bring up a menu, but like you i seriously dislike the unity interface, might have to install xfce or gnome2 - that's why i installed it on my desktop where i seldom do work

4llerbe u forget, i've always used multiple distros,
changes i've noticed: a 3.x kernel (i believe Linus Torvalds decided they'ed used the 2.x for too long and decided to change major release no); also no more classical interface (bah! At least they didn't go gnome3)

@pete234 for a very long time now linux has had inbuilt audio drivers; of course there may be some proprietary hardware where it would be hard to get the drivers but most hardware i've encountered work out of the box. On the other hand if you're talking about the ability to play mp3s out of the box, know that is more of a licensing issue; in some countries it is not legal to play mp3s with "free/open" software, which is why it is not included by default. If you want a version of linux that has mp3 support out the box try mint linux

@4llerbe, haven't played too many games that require gamepads on linux, most of the few i have are console games that run on emulators - but i was able to play with a "ps2" gamepad (you know the 1k/1k5 one), heck i lent a friend the gsmepad and he uses it on his ps3 now

men see me see trouble o, i no know wetin just happen, all i know na say i try delete one file, i get error message "file not found" ; next thing i type ls and all i see is my destktop folder, my downloads folder including the 2gb+ freebsd iso that i was still downloading has disappeared; infact all the non-hidden folders in my home folder are gone! i don tire! i have lost my whole partition table before but at least that time i was able to do a recovery; this one o think is gone for good

people are still on the mtn network 'cos it still has the largest subscriber base and 'cos airtel/zain/celte/vmobile/vodacome/econet didn't get their act together on time i have a wonderful number and call me what you will, itt will continue to be my main line; the only way i can migrate to another network is if i can take the line with me

Hi, just saw this thread today; have been looking at the posts and i'm just curious, why exactly do we need to hack our phones? i have a few apps as it is and so far i see no reason to do so, ive always been able to find a work around to do whatever i want to do; i once did so with my previous s60phone

that's really weird, by default the modem should be detected; how do you know it's not detected? anyway type: sudo lsusb and post the output

hi, @okan1 not that i don't appreciate your price, i'm just curious; i just checked the western digital site and non of the portable harddisks cost less than $80, at N150 to the dollar that's over 12k so my question is how do you make profit at that price?

i've dropped fedora for now, trying out the new linux mint, nothing really new, same old window manager; though i find the default background less depressing than previous ones.
maybe when next i login to my fedora i'll give a status update on gnome3; i've already noticed a couple of annoyances on it though, for one thing i don't know any easy way to change the system wide fonts. Will keep you updated on the status of things
