about the unity thing, i currently have the netbook version of 10.10 and i've discovered it's actually possible to use it either in netbook form or the desktop form that we're used to; had to download compiz though, before i was able to get the gui effects that i'm used to

@muyis yeah, before that you might want to make sure your modem is actually detected; look for ttyUSB0 to ttyUSB03 in your /dev folder; if it isn't found then it means you modem hasn't been detected; what you need to do is check that the entry for your usb modem is listed in the modeswich conf file; first type lsusb to get the vendor and product id and note them, then edit the udev rules file for modeswitch which would be found in the /lib/udev/rules.d folder (normally what i would do would be somethig like sudo nano (or gedit or whatever text editor you use) /lib/udev/rules.d/*modeswitch* (since i use multiple distros the name of the file may be different but there's only one modeswich file in that folder) check that the entry for your modem is there, else add it then remove modem and replug, wait a few seconds and it should be there

@rovar i myself don't like using those "network manager" utilities kppp is still ok, at least with it i can set a timeout in case i fall asleep while i'm browsing but my dialer of choice is wvdial. i've started looking at kde again and it's not so bad after all; my main grouse is the panel; i can customise colors for everything else but i have to use predefined themes or download or is there something i'm missing somewhere?

grr i've had it with wizards; why oh why didn't i use my usual normal "manually specify partition" when installing this ubuntu netbook edition; now the thing has wiped out my whole hard disk - all my windows and my netbsd and my over 7 distros  have been wiped clean ; to make matters worse even the ubuntu netbook is not even booting; now i'll have to figure out a way to restore at least most of my partitions

@brain much as i prefer the qt interface, it seems that most qt apps tend to include many kde libraries, if i could get independent qt apps the way you can get many gtk apps without necessarily including gnome, i would be more into them - not that i don't like kde, its just that i prefer speed to appearance (which is why for instance, even though i use firefox for downloading, i tend to use google chrome for actual browsing - it comes up faster)

at least i remember playing some gba games on linux (using an emulator of course)

which game pads don't work in linux? i have a usb "playstation" pad and it DOES work in linux; i see my last post on my take on the kde/gnome post got blocked "how annoyin" is it 'cos i modified it so much? i can't be expected to be posting bad grammar across the internet

hmnnn can some one explain why my system clock always sets it self back by an hour? i noticed when i was installing that the installer always put nigerian time to be 1 hr behind, so i manually put in the right time. now it always sets itself back by an hour!

i have set the proper zone for the clock to be nigeria but. . . . . . . . .

it has something about the hardware clock being set to utc (or something like that)
edit /etc/default/rcS and set UTC=no if you want ubuntu to use local time
(this is one of the things i find annoying about ubuntu; mint at least gives the option of decideing whether your hardware clock is set to local time or UTC when installing; but ubuntu just decides it has to be UTC)

I see they still haven't fixed the locale issue yet. Had that problem with 10.04 myself.

funny i don't think i ever had a problem with the software centre (but then again i've always prefered apt-get or synaptic) but i think it's annoying that they'll include a locale like en_NG if some of their core applications are not going to support it; but then again, maybe people haven't complained about it so they're unaware that there's a problem

Solved. It was the language settings. I had fiddled with it before but I forgot I had to log out and log back in for the new setting to take effect. It's funny that nobody else had this problem.

you actually didn't really need to logout, all you had to do was type : "export LANG=en_GB" (without the quotes) and you'd be ok; i know 'cos i had a similar locale problem today (something to do with python) and did just that

try checking /var/cache/apt/packages (i think) anyway somewhere in /var/cache

maybe i should have waited another month before switching to 100hrs; anyway i should try to get this thing soon; just a pity we haven't been having light for a while either

alright you guys just use and tell me the new features; i generally wait for the next ".04" version, maybe this time i'll make an exception and try the netbook edition this time,i wonder if there's a kde version

which modem are you using, manufacturer and model n you can't browse these siteumber; but it doesn't make sense that you can't access those sites; are you sure your pc isn't infected? i us e starcomms myself and don't have any problem with fb or any other site for that matter

RHYTHMBOX!!! i don't like that media player for anything, usually when i install a linux distro once i get my internet up the fierst 2 audio players i install are xmms or audacious (which support winamp classic skins) and exaile (i seldom even use amarok on kde-based distros)

one of the things that has dissuaded my friends from tryin out ubuntu linux
is the fact that you still need an internet connection after installing ubuntu
to do many basic things.
i could probably download one but it would take me a few days (2 or 3)

personally i don't use uuid, too lengthy and difficult to remember; i either used devices or labels (yes i label my partitions)

yeah, also has your pc always been slow or did it suddenly become slow and if suddenly, can you remember what last you did before it became slow?

ok on reading the grub changelog it seems ext4 has been supported since version 0.4.2 and requires e2fsprogs version 1.41.0 or higher; this was in early 2009 i i guess you should be okay

@muyis sorry i'm so late in answering, i fell asleep (i must have been really tired) as to editing /etc/fstab you can edit it at any time, as to ethe ext4 stuff i don't know if it is possible; as for using the /home partition, that is why i asked you to log in as root; the home folder of the root user is /root not /home/root so you can do everything without rebooting and once you've finished all you have to do is mount /dev/sda1 and your home folder is automatically mounted; then you can log out and log in as your user

@muyiscoi why not login as root (if you don't have a root password use: sudo passwd root); mount your 125gb partition on some other folder and move the contents of the /home folder or better still copy so that you can always revert back if you don't do it well (use cp -ap to preseve all attributes) then when you have finished copying you can edit /etc/fstab and make sure your 125gb partion is set to mount on the /home folder
i don't think you can merge 2 partitions if they are not side by side

anyway if you have modeswitch installed then do this:
type lsusb you might see a line like 05c6:1000 or 05c6: <some other number>
the 05c6 is the vendor id the anydata (the manufacturer of your modem) while the product id is 1000, for your modem the product id might actually be different; just note the product id
note the number that comes after the colon
type: ls /lib/udev/rules.d | grep modeswitch you should see a file like 40-usb_modeswitch.rules (it might be different on your system, while i'm typing this thing from linux i'm not using ubuntu)
now type:
sudo nano /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules (for example; only if the modewitch file is actually called 40-usb_modeswitch.rules)
(note you could also use sudo gedit instead of sudo nano - i think)
now add the following line to the end of that file:

# AnyDATA ADU-500 Series, older Option devices
ATTRS{idVendor}=="05c6", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1000", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"

if the product id that you got when typing lsusb is not 1000 replace the 1000 with whatever you got;
now save and exit then tyoe sudo modprobe option; afterwards remove the modem and plug it again
type dmesg | tail after about 10-15 secs of plugging in, you should see something like ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1, ttyUSB2 etc, that's the sign that your modem has been detected
your dialer should now work

if it still doesn't work pls past the output of lsusb, perhaps we could figure out what is wrong, besides if you're using the latest version of ubuntu, modeswitch should come installed by default
