interest and talent are necessary too let's face it; not everyone can be a world class programmer; you may not br particularly hot mathematically but a good mental reasoning capacity - especially logical is of utmost importance |
besides you shouldn't have to remove the harddisk; most pcs have a bios option where you can specify which device you want to use as first boot device |
grub4dos is your answer; what i did was extract everything into drive c, added an entry like: C:\grldr="GRUB" to the boot.ini (better you go through system properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery settings -> click on edit) then you can add the contents of your ubuntu menu.lst on the linux partition to the menu.lst in your drive c |
one other thing, it depens on the distro; some will work and some won't; puppy is still the easiest as far as i'm concerned |
which distro are you thinking of putting? never got unetbootin to work; never bothered trying more than once or twice anyway; with grub4dos you could put mepis or puppy on the machine without removing the windows install (same with ubuntu but you would have to first do the install to flash thingy from your own pc then copy the files to the desired folder) you have a program that can extract isos don't you (e.g. winrar)? if you have any problem setting it up just let me know |
@darude, check my last postt, i put a link there; if that doesn't work then try this one: forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/24497-v18610-windows-7vista-32bit-nvidia/ this is assuming that you are using 32-bit hardware like i said in the previous post that was blocked |
@darude have you tried the vista driver? |
link usb through bluetooth? now that's one of the daftest things i ever heard -ok maybe not quite but do you know the maximum speed of usb 2.0? 480 mbps (about 60mb/s) at least theoretically but under normal circumstances one should be able to get up to half that speed 240mbps (30mb/s) ; even the old usb 1.1 peaks at about 40mbps (5mb/s) and one should be able to get up to half that speed 20mbps (2.5mb/s); now your bluetooth 2.0 peaks at 2.1 mbps or ~250kb/s so unless you're using bluetooth for low data transfer devices like keyboards and mice it's an absolute pain - it will take me 20 secs just to send a 5mb file to a flash drive connected via an external usb device, what if i wanted to send a 50mb file? and the reason why apple didn't include it was 'cos they wanted a smooth exterior - or something like that; couldn't they just put a cover that they could slide over the port when not in use? for myself i am totally NOT interested in the ipad |
i hink it has something to do with the fact that most ofthe linux folks have absolutely no intention of coughing up God knows how many dollars to buy hardware that has even less functionality thana budget pc but costs a whole lot more; besides i don't think there were too many discussions on the netbook for that matter; besides microsoft is the enemy; one one linux is competing against on the x86 architecture, we have no business with niche products that may or may not flop and run on some architecture that we are not quite sure of, but really it;'s because of that hardware lock in that i decided i wasn't interested in apple products |
@dualcore u know in firefox (and chrome of course) you could just type the search item in the address bar sef i don't even use bing b4 we start thinking of wankel (where on earth did they get that name from anyway) |
@jhendor, you obviously haven't used starcoms 1x before; evdo is much saner |
doesn't have usb port; an ipod can be put in your pocket; the only reason why people are makin so much noise about it is because it's apple and they've been very successful with the iphone and ipod; just wondering, how would one use it to connect to the internet with a usg modem? |
@uni-kazzy right-click mycomputer -> select properties -> click on the advanced tab -> in the performance box select settings and -> click on the advanced tab -> in the virtual memory box click on change -> increase the maximum size (e.g if the maximum size is 1000, you could increase it to 2000) and click on set then click on ok; that should incease the size of your page file |
i know they are supposed to be almost the same but i prefer ubuntu to mint; i find mint's colors to be a bit depressing, but generally i prefer .deb -based distros to rpm -based; something about the way they install; besides they seem to run faster (compare fedora or opensuse with debian or ubuntu) |
i agree; i use kde in opensuse myself; prefer the interface to gnome any day; dont worry 4llerbe, we'rre not going to try to convince you to desert gnome (apparently Linus prefers kde too but hey what the heck?) |
strange really; maybe kde doesn't like you haven't really taken to kde4 myself but then i'm not a kde/gnome fan - i prefer window managers to desktop environments; still you might as well add me to that list; kde before gnome; don't like rythmbox - very annoying to me at any rate, totem's a little better; i prefer xmms, exaile or audacious for my audio; i like amarok too though and for video none other than vlc. but since we are not about to start a kde/gnome flame here i might as well stop. one thing though, i once ordered a kubuntu cd some years ago, since then i haven't had the nerve to try kde on ubuntu again - i was really disappointed |
@ruddie and while you are at it it is advisable not to install or copy anything on the disk just yet |
puppy linux will run on pentium 166mmx with 128mb ram 14gb is more than enough for hard drive - i seldom give my linux distros more than 8gb disk space so your pc spec is not too low, dsl linux will do well with even less but there hasn't been a new release for a long time; mepis will run on 64mb ra though it may be a bit slow, personally i believe the greatest limitation is the ram not the cpu or disk space; tiny core will also run though it may lack too many features for your liking. At the end of the day your opinion is what counts the most; of the ones ive mentioned i'll recommend puppy or mepis |
300-400kbps off peak, 2.4mbps peak? well here's my take on this; first of all kbps is actually kilobits/sec not kilobytes/sec so ehrn they say 400kbps they actually mean 400/8 kilobytes/sec = 50 kilobytes/sec; that said 4llerbutu spoke true i have never gotten up to an average of 300 kbytes/sec (2.4mbps) for 10 minutes even between the hours of 1am and 4am; personally that 300-400kbps thing is actually what i get as peak (for instance now i'm downloading a file (7am saturday) and the speed is 43kbytes/sec which is about 330+ kbps) at peak hours i'd probably be down to about 80-100kbps; the only reason why i stick with it is because i don't have a download limit, i i like i can download 1 terabyte as long as the time of my plan is not used up; i've tried mtn but only on gprs and sometimes i have difficulty connecting - even on my phone; never tried with any other isps though as to whether it works, i'm yet to see a modem that doesn't work in linux (maybe if it came out a few weeks ago and doesn't conform to any of the standards of the previous modems or if it came out in the 1980s); if it's usb then type lsusb as root and paste the output here so we can help you figure out what model and what you need to do to get it working |
recently had an experience which gave me cause to use the switchroot program for the glo modem but it was redhat 5 which uses 2.6.18 kernel (probably released about 2007) anyway i'm just wondering if you still need that switchroot progra for more recent releases or it was just because of the fact that that kernel was so old |
just like that? do eti have internet plan yet? how's the speed? what about download limits |
for reading? kindle is better; for other things ipad is FAR better - in short kindle is strictly for reading so comparing the two isn't really fair |
nah just dislike things that are not open - not even usb? wat about bluetooth? then how do i communicate with my existing hardware? besides would be afraid to disassemble one if i got it; so honestly where's the fun |
you know when i saw dual core's comment i took it that he was just making some small humor but now things seem to have degenerated into something else; to the windows supporters, i didn't know you guys kept an eye on this particular thread; there was a time that there were no posts for a while so much so that it was no longer on the first page; perhaps your comments would have been taken more favorably then even if it just gave us something to talk about; @4llerbuntu apparently people sometimes see some of your posts as offensive, you might want to stop speaking against windows (even if it's just saying how much linux is much better) in windows support threads remember at the end of the day we're still the minority to everyone else what's the big deal anyway? i think we all agree that everyone uses whatever works best if you guys want to start a flame war you could start a flaming thread (with the moderator's approval of course) beyond that the mature thing to do when someone starts "trolling" is to ignore the comment or to act in good humor |
the roo:could you explain what you mean? are u sayin your laptop sticks to the table or a button on the keyboard sticks or what? |
personally i believe a lot of the things mentioned have been inflated - ok i'm not a gamer but i do keep up with the trends; most cpus made in the last 2 years (pentium Ms and Atoms not inclusive) would probably be fine but one thing that cant be overstressed is your graphics card; integrated graphic cards are not an option; nvidia and ATI are the top graphic card manufacturers - especially when it comes to gaming but i guess if you go with the things that have been mentioned you can't go wrong; 250gb harddisk is not necessary but any pc u'll get nowadays would probably come with about that much storage |
inflation galore, then biro will become N50 or even N100 |
dual core why u come find fight for dis forum? watch it o, no worry, if u no wan use linux bsd dey dere or opensolaris or if u good reach, u fit write ur own operationg system using assembly or c/c++ |
Dual Core:so what happens when keys stop responding? u get a usb keyboard to connect to it? a keyboard connected to a keyboard in order to use a pc? twill make for a very cluttered table looks like an oversized lappy without a screen looks nice but i won't buy it, why 'cos i'm reckless with hardware at least the lappy has a cover |
oludy:and proud to be one |
not pointing any fingers at anyone, remember that the only free version of vmware is the player not the server so for me, given the choice btw paying for vmware so i can create (and not just use) a virtual machine and usinf virtualbox for free i use the free edition. anyway on linux i use qemu more often than not, i can type the commands on the command line without waiting for some gui to come up b4 i can say test an iso image |
