@harzan when did it start getting hot?, when it stops charging are you sure that it's not because the battery's full?

@raham go to the cmd prompt (start -> run -> type cmd) and type chkdsk /r, it will tell you that the disk cannot be checked for errors until you restart the computer and will ask whether you want to check when you restart; select yes and then restart. when the computer restarts, it will tell you to press any key to skip disk checking; make sure you don't press anything, let it do the disk checking. warning; it may take a while to finish checking for errors

4llerbe, these puppy linux people don come again o, i was really intruiged when i found out that puppy had the second highest number of page hits in the past week on distrowatch.com (behind ubuntu) it seems they've created a series of puppy that will work with ubuntu packages, the latest is lupu which is compatible with lucid. ontheir site it says Puppy's own Puppy Package Manager will install any packages from the vast Ubuntu repositories! anyway i'm currently downloading it to see how good it really is; nowadays i don't even bother to "install" it, just extract the image to a folder, create a filesystem file and create an entry in grub and i'm up and running

have you tried: cd '/home/f4ll3rbuntu/YF7'; sudo java -jar freedom.jar

on kde-based distros i use kppp/wvdial while on gnome-based network manager/wvdial

when i was on a timed plan (like starcomms 100hrs) i prefered using wvdial on ubuntu
'cos the network manager never timed out when idle (very annoying if you fall asleep
while browsing)

@4llerbuntu do i detect some sarcasm? i've been coming around once in a while but u guys are always talking some funny software and i'm like "WHAAT! this 4llerbuntu guy has really infected these nairaland ubuntu guys" i mean what on earth is konboot? why would i want to mess around with the kernel on the fly (ok so that's probably not a very good idea since i probably won't mind trying that but i've seen you guys talk about some "funny" stuff and i'm lost so i just keep my mouth shut before i look like an idiot)

can you be more explicit pls; is this a new development or you've had the problem since you got the laptop; is it that you can't play any type of music files at all (including music cds) or just some type; what kind of media player are you trying to use to play your music? have you tried using another one? do you hear sound out of your speakers at all or your music player just does not come up etc and please please please tell us what kind/model of computer you are using and what operating system (win xp, vista, win 7 )

@ritch would have said the same thing myself - though maybe not so detailed; all files are always visible on all my pcs and whenever i'm doing that attrib thingy people thimk==nk i'm doing something really difficult; i think microsoft spoiled us with the windows thing, remember the days when anyone who knew how to use a computer KNEW how to use a computer -not like in these days of drag and drop

first of all if you visit any forum - not just nairaland where they offer advice/support on computer issues it is customary to include the specifications of your computer i.e. you said you laptop's an Acer; what is the model number and what operating system is running on it? we have to know these things before we can even decide if we can solve your problem

i think we should get one thing straight; we lost bakassi because Obasanjo was looking for international goodwill, and not thinking about the indigenes of the area; beacuse it is an oil producing region there would have been dispute over whether it was controlled by the federal government or state government (resource control); however Obudu belongs solely to the state and it's a significant cause of income for the state, i do't think c/river will let it go; besides with the stories i've heard about how the natives of that area are being treated, i don't think nigeria (or at least c/river) will cede that place to cmr

@dualcore not fair you are using a smartphone; before i misplaced my e50 i had opera mobile which is opera for s60v3 phones and it multi - window functionality, up to 3other new windows; what are some of the new features of opera mini 5 - the ones you can remember

thanks but it still doesn;t work, besides unless it supports multiple windows at least, i'm better off with the browsers that i have

i had a problem with opera mini at least on mtn network on my phone, i just couldn't get it to access the internet - and i tried different versions so i googled up web browsers for mobile phones and i found these two in particular:
uc browser: www.uc.cn/English/ apparently a chinese browser but it's quite good, it even has support for multiple windows (which i'm yet to see in opera mini)
another one is the bolt browser www.boltbrowser.com - which also has support for tabbed browsing
just thought someone might be interested

you might want to do a system restore to a previous time first; if you still have the problem you could try restoring to an even earlier time or then again you could just format; i'm sure you prefer the thought of using win7, perhaps an upgrade instead of format and install will suffice

that chicken is a freeeaaak poor bird, i guess it won't be able to catch any "chicks" when growing up

@xtianh what do you mean by "free internet configuration?" do you mean a config that will allow you to browse for free or free information on hw to configure the internet connection that you've paid for? if it's the former i can't help you since i always pay for my internet connection (besides why not pay for your connection and get a free antivirus); if it;s the latter then we will need to know your internet service provider and the type of hardware (modem brand?) that you have

@okponee maybe you should just get google-chrome, it's among the fastest browsers available and i don't think you'll have that problem; as for your antivirus, maybe you should consider changing to another one - if you are sure your zain internet connection is not the problem

@lynxnoon, you've been downloading videos from fztvseries? i was wondering why the download speed drastically reduced

@doublen have you been haviing any problem using starcomms novatel on linux? i've been using that modem on the various linuces i have for over two years and i don't have a problem (though sometimes you might have to do some manual tweaks) however sometimes istead of your modem being detected, you might see a cdrom drive - other than the one that comes with you pc in which case all you have to do is eject it

@fisher666 next tme you see that purple screen press the tab key; if the cd is ok you should see something different

@okponee does your other browser work with your zain network? if so in firefox go to tools -> preferences -> advanced -> network -> settings (under conections) and make sure no proxy (or auto-detect proxy settings) is selected
as for your antivirus, you may want to uninstall and reinstall it - if you have the installer else get another antivirus

can you get a desktop monitor from someone flat screen or crt it doesn't matter; now connect the monitor to you laptop so that the display comes out on the monitor; if you get the same output then it MIGHT be a software problem, if not the problem is definitely hardware

i use an acer one, in fact most post i make in the evening are from my netbook running linux (i have over 6 linux distros and 2 bsds installed on it - not counting the default windows), except for the smaller screen size you shouldn't have too many issues if any (of course the cpu's slower but unless you are intending to use your netbook to run cpu intensive applications you shouldn't have too much of a problem, however i wouldn't recommend using
vista on it, 7's better i guess); my advice, if you can get one with over 3hrs battery life do so, one other thing, you may want to reduce your fonts so you can see more (i use a font size of 8 myself instead of the default 10 )

i agree with ralvy, evolution works (at least with gmail) and this is actually the first time i'm trying to access my mail account from home and sorry you're not so excited abt the usb thing 'cos i'm still going to mention it; for now i'm still using lucid from usb, my settings actually get saved too; yesterday i downloaded the requisite packages needed to play my usual audio and video, today they still work; your mobo must be pretty old not to be able to boot from usb

my advice; just borrow a flash big enough temporarily, create a startup disk, you can choose to use either your cd or an iso then from the flash you can install; at least that saves you from wasting another cd; will try evolution soon to see if it will work for me too

@muyiscol as to using more obscure distros you actually don't necessarily (at least for some distros) need to use unetbootin; in my former flash dribve before i lost it i had puppy (probably the easiest distro to use on a flash drive without a third party tool), mepis which is almost as easy and a funny distro called xpud (so far the os with the fastest boot out of the box that i've ever encountered - yes it boots faster than ubuntu but then it's also lightweight ~100mb ), i also got android booting from the flash before i misplaced it. i admit that perhaps you might need a tool like that to get some distros to boot from flash but many just require copying some files to the flash and editing correctly the boot menu. besides i don't know if unetbootin will allow you have multiple oses in the same flash partition, it didn't the last time i tried but now you mention it, i may just try iit out again,maybe this time i'll be able to figure how to configure other distros to boot manually (i.e. by hand)

oh you're talking about from windows? sorry i almost never use windows anymore at home that way i don;t have to worry about updating my antivirus

4buntu what are you talking anout? unetbootin? why are you using unetbootin? if you want to install ubuntu on a flash disk just use the startup disk creator (you will need either the ubunt cd or the image) and if you have enough free space on the flash you don;t even have to delete the files already there; unfortunately it uses syslinux/isolinux not grub but it's not difficult to figure out how to migrate grub commands to syslinux; windows images
@azanor i see you feel my pain; ubuntu seem to have gotten a little stingy with time; now i have to download an iso? well thank God for evdo and 3g sha

so far have only tried lucid on a startup disk; maybe when i decide which os to do away with ill be able to install it on my harddisk
