I don't understand what is so exceptional about writing simple English and lacing it with proverbs? Before Achebe, there was Peter Abraham's Mine Boy which was written in simple and engaging English.

Many Igbo writers have almost the same style as Achebe. Even his contemporaries like Cyprian Ekwensi. So, I don't see what is exceptional about his style of writing.

It was not just to sound good. It was a recognition of unparalleled artistic skill.
It is that same originality that has ensured his work will remain as the most translated, most read, most discussed African work of literature on earth.

The Nobel is not the be all and end all. They have their specific requirements that may disqualify other great works.
It does not in any way confer absolute and unbeatable royalty on any prospective winner.

The taste of the pudding is in the eating. The most read, most translated, most studied African literature has conferred on itself a prestige that the Nobel cannot buy.

Tolstoy as well as Soyinka were good. But that is just it.
They were good. Nothing revolutionary.

In case you don't know, originality is often applied to the creativity of artists, writers, and thinkers. For instance, Tuface gave us a lot of original songs over the years. Chinua Achebe is regarded as the father of African literature.

His books are the most translated books in Africa.

Soyinka will never have that kind of legacy.

First of all, Chinua Achebe is regarded by many as "Father of modern African literature". This does not mean that he was the father of modern African literature. This appellation is due to the fact that Achebe helped many African writers get published through the African Writers Series that he edited.

Second, Achebe's books are not the most translated books in Africa. As a matter of fact, Achebe's fame lies strongly in one of his books-- Things Fall Apart, and not in all his books. Things Fall Apart is the most translated book by an African writer.

Third, you wrote that Soyinka can never have that kind of legacy. I just laugh at your ignorance. That your book is well-translated does not mean you are better than writers with lesser numbers of translations. The Adventures of Pinocchio is the second most widely translated book in the world after the Holy Bible but does that mean the writer was greater than William Shakespeare? Does that mean the writer of The Adventures of Pinocchio was greater than writers like Leo Tolstoy, Homer, George Orwell, Charles Dickens, etceteras? Of course, not.

The only book that is very likely to remain well-translated is the Bible. In the future, a Soyinka book may beat Achebe's Things Fall Apart in numbers of translations but Achebe can never win the Nobel Prize.

So, as you can see, what you think is Achebe's legacy can be erased in years but the fact that Soyinka's Nobel prize in Literature was the first by an African will remain forever in history.

Temples and synagogues were places while the church is a body of believers. You go to temples and synagogues but you gather as a church.

Therefore if the whole church gathers together in one place and all should speak in tongues, but uninstructed ones or unbelievers come in, will not they say that you are mad? (1 Corinthians 14:23)

Prose is not all about storytelling. Prose includes articles, essays, memoirs, etcetera. And if we were to judge their overall outputs, Soyinka is a far better prose writer than Achebe. However, Achebe was the better storyteller.

Achebe and Soyinka are great talented writers in African literature. Achebe was a good story teller in prose while Soyinka is very good at play and poem (Drama & Poetry). Achebe was a good novelist, (prose). Soyinka is a good playwright (drama). Both of them are good writers in different genres of literature but in term of novel, Chinua Achebe was better than Wole Soyinka. And in term of play and poem, Soyinka is better than Achebe.

How can you say Achebe was a better novelist than Soyinka?

Just say he was a better storyteller. Novel writing goes beyond telling a story. It involves other devices.

For instance, Achebe was a great storyteller but when it comes to novel writing, he was not as rich in depth as novelists like Coatzee and Mahfouz or even Gordimer.

The FG said it would resist every attempt to disrupt the electoral processes. That is not a careless statement.

We didn't claim to have nuclear weapons nor have we held any important foreign official in captivity. The country has not been declared "a failed state" so why should the FG be scared to warn off unnecessary foreign interferences?

All the FG has asked is for foreign countries to respect the sovereignty of the country.

The fact remains that any foreign element trying to disrupt electoral processes would have themselves to blame.
