ile naira: @all, a general question for those of you with an inverter with dual input (DC from solar array + AC from either NEPA or a generator), where you are relying on NEPA for additional (or sole) input for charging your batteries, how do you protect your inverter from low currents, fluctuating voltages, incorrect frequencies and all the other forms of professionalism from NEPA?

I'm trying to decide whether to forget NEPA completely and just use a generator if I go beyond my system level of autonomy or hook it up to NEPA and save the expense of an auto-start generator but risk damaging the inverter. Any thoughts, experiences?

I stay in an area with a generally poor power supply, I have not seen more 120V at any peak period. I just passed my power supply directly from the prepaid meter into a 5KVA stabilizer and from there to my inverter and the whole house. Maybe voltage can fluctuate but our gadgets have very little tolerance for frequency fluctuations. I think you only need protection for fluctuating voltages which a voltage stabilizer can easily give.

I thought you were having 24/7 supply . With my setup, I run the inverter my from 6pm till day 7am next day (13 hrs). But the freezer gets turned off by 10pm leaving light points and fans.
Since everyone leaves home in the morning, we usually turn off the inverter. Normally if the inverter is turned off and PHCN comes up, the inverter still supplies and powers all gadgets, but if PHCN goes off, every gadget switches off. And I have two freezers and 1 fridge, with water dispenser that will be on (with PHCN). If all of them should hang off the inverter, the load will be too much for the batteries. Or what do you advice?

So in my case the solar ends up charging the batteries alone (with no load). that may be why the AH is smaller (My thoughts!!)

@George, Sure I will still hang the Stabilizer. I tried hanging it when I was setting up but the wall was too loose. The nails wouldnt hold tight. i spent so much time even getting the MPPT controller and the other ones hung. But I will tackle it.

How much PHCN do you get in a day? Does your inverter charge your batteries when there is public power?
If you hardly get power from PHCN, then something is not right in the setup. With my setup of 450Ah battery bank, I had 111Ah on saturday, 135 on sunday, 88 yesterday and 121 today, I have already harvested 519Ah month to date.
I also switch off my inverter when I step out in the morning leaving the charge controller to pump current into my batteries. I have even removed the cable supplying the house from the prepaid meter because it's running into almost 3 weeks that we got power here.

pdozie: Thanks Bode. At exactly 7 days, I harvested 309AH (15KW). I've cleared the logs for March now. Just out of curiosity, how many batteries are you running with? With 720 Watts solar capacity you have uninterrupted power for 2 weeks? with freezer and blenders firing on? I should be doing same with my 750W capacity but i doubt I can last for 3 days without PHCN complimenting...

I do not have uninterrupted power but i have coverage for what i need. 2hrs in the morning and about 5 to 7hrs every evening and some 15 - 18hrs during the weekends. i think there could be an issue with your solar array setup, are you using a MPPT charger? I got 246AH in just two days after changing all my panels to 120 Watts, a total of 720watts. With 309Ah in 7days, you get an average of 45Ah per day although it could be that you rarely use you battery bank.

I still think it is not a good idea to use your batteries the way they are combined. It might not breakdown immediately but i am sure that continued use will make some issues for them.

309Ah should be 7725WH or 7.725KwH, how did you make your calculation?

I got mine installed last weekend. (3 panels x 250W). For the whole week, I havent bought a litter of fuel nor powered my Gen. The combination of Solar & PHCN has kept the batteries alive even with PHCN holding power for over 24 hrs (in the name of shedding or rationalzation).

I have to figure out how many AH I harvested in the week and then reset it for March.

I however need one clarification, on the MPPT there is the dip switch for setting up batteries for equalization. I set it on auto (28 days). Is that recommended?

Who needs a gen? I even sold mine off in January.
I have not had public power for two weeks now and honestly I don't seem to bother. With a total of 720watts installed capacity and another 400watts waiting the day I will buy a second charger controller, I have more than i need sef.

You should have a menu on your mppt charger where the daily harvest is accumulated. You can easily track from there.

I am not sure if battery equalization is needed on sealed deep cycle batteries. You can google....

6 panels....2pcs of 120watts and 4 pieces of 100watts.
I will be buying 4 more 120watts by the weekend.
I plan to change the whole array to 120watts and rest all the 100watts panels till I get another charge controller.

Ending the month of february of just 28days with 1736Ah harvest from the sun. I always like to say the value in watt hours....43.4Kwh!!!

Close to two weeks after the storm, there's been no public power....the fridge still chilling and that's the sound of my wife's blender, she no even dey bother tell me again before turning it on....

Charge controller counter reset...here comes the month of march.

My house is off lagos ibadan expressway, odo ona kekere.
The community of more than 300 houses does not have a single transformer, the nearest been about 2km away.
We used to have 2 to 6hrs of power in 2 or 3 days and ofcourse we need to have double stabilizers to make the voltage power a small tv.
So I wouldn't even talk about whether power is stable or not because even when it comes the voltage is useless.
I am not blaming the federal government for it but incase you could help my community secure a transformer we will remain eternally grateful.

Much as these are hard facts, I doubt it will provoke any serious action considering that is it coming from the opposition party who I do not think will do better even if the reins of government were handed to them even without election.
It is quite pathetic that for all these decades we could not move away from the free money that the oil sector provided. The cocoa house in ibadan was built without oil money, but our governors and other leaders have become so lazy and only go to Abuja at the end of the month to share free oil money.
I think we can still save ourselves if we adopt true federalism, no more free money to spend, only then will we bring on our thinking caps.

Most likely the bank transferring or receiving had issues. I have transferred money from my account without any additional charge except the normal cot and I think 100 naira. It was also delivered into the recipient account same day. This was even when the account numbers were not nuban. And I expect it to be better now that they are nuban.

I checked the link you put up there, like I wrote in my first response, the rear case that you can combine must be same brand and model with close matching age i,e date of manufacture. You will see this also in the article.

But in the case of ile naira, they are different brands.

@ Ile naira, I also strongly think it might not be a good idea to combine the batteries the way you have done.
Infact this the biggest drawback that I have noticed in starting renewable energy from a small level.
In rear cases that batteries can be combined, they have to be from same manufacturer, same AH, same model and age.
Like it was rightly pointed to you, the different brand of batteries have different charge and discharge curves specified by their manufacturers. This could even make your setup dangerous as I think you risk explosion of the batteries.

I will suggest, that you use the new set of 100Ah batteries you got or better still the older set alone.
You can google more on it.

Oga George and bing, like I said earlier, I asked my colleague who installed the wind turbine, his works at 1m/sec. I have not seen his setup but he is someone I trust.

@ Ile naira, I was referring to coastline by saying river, the example i sighted are also large scaled, like the suzlon advert you see on CNN. I have a friend who installed a wind turbine for his personal use in Lagos.
Although I do not have the details of the wind speed and how high it is, he told me it is working fine.
He was the one who told me about the turbines that work with really low speeds, can't remember the figures now.
What I am saying in essence is that, there are lots of myths around these things. For example, a lot of people think I am crazy for investing this much in alternative power. The only way to dispel these myths is by doing active research and investing...

@ all, I was actually attracted to renewable power with what I saw in Europe. I saw a wind turbine farm while travelling on a train in Germany, although they are very tall, I didn't notice any river close to them. Also with the advancement of technology turbines with very small wind speeds are been developed.
I will advise that no one should doubt what technology advancement in that piece of equipment has become.

Meanwhile, I think my setup is breaking the record again, 121Ah harvested today, what a day! Expect the picture tomorrow.

@ wirinet, I think it is also important to think about this issue of dust before installing the panels. You could choose the part of the roof that is easily accessible.
I also asked George how he was managing it in one of my posts considering he has close to double digit panels now if not more and they are installed on the roof of a storey building.
In my own case, my house is a bungalow and I decided how I will be cleaning the panels before installation. I just borrow my wife's bucket and mop, hop on top of my ladder and the panels are cleaned but I have only 6panels.

I wanted to pick that MPPT charge controller that you got there, it was the best i saw then, but it had too much than I needed.
CAN BUS, Ethernet, RS232 was just too much design and the cost of shipping was also high.
Although, I couldn't overlook the 130volts Vmp. But I sure will get one when I visit China next month.

@ Oga George, I quite agree with you 100% that one should not compromise on cost and quality when electronics like these are considered.
But I also think that some Chinese companies are worthy giving a try.

I have grown to like patronize the folks in China lately because of their ingenuity and relatively cheap products.

My pure sine wave inverter and MPPT charge controller which I got from best power inverters in China has so far worked to my satisfaction.
If you like adventure like me, you can go for them. I will consider getting one or two from best power myself.

Watch out: I didn't see any pure sine wave that is stackable and it looks like it doesn't also come with battery charging features.

It is quite easy to understand the divergent views of Nigerians on the power situation in the country.
A story was once told of four blind men, they were asked to feel an elephant and afterwards describe was they think it is. One touched the leg and said it was a tree, another touched the trumpet and said it was like a snake.

The power situation in the country is so sensitive and I believe Nigerians commented based on their experiences.
There is a lot of enlightenment that is required, for example, Nigerians who are connected to 33kv lines will receive better and reliable power supply if compared to others on the 11kv line which is most common. Also consumers who live in areas where VIPs live will also receive better power supply at the expense of other citizens.

Thee are many developing communities of recent and with the lopsided distribution of transformers, many homes are deprived of power even when it is available. I leave in a community of more than 300 houses, the nearest transformer to my abode is about 2km. Even when there is power, it is useless until I combine multiple stabilizers to bring it to a reasonable voltage for use.

I will not shout on the government for not providing power, this is not to say that I am not disappointed, but I know above all that is been generated, I first of all need a transformer in my community. I can only begin to talk about stable power supply when it can get to my mouse.I will care more when my government, both state and federal, begin distribution of transformers than generating more power because at my level I need a transformer badly.

Since I cannot wait for the government I have gone into providing green and renewable energy for my use.
It is expensive though but I got my peace back with no more noisy neighbors, ops I mean generators!
