IamQuins: Only in Lagos and other SWestern states u see this bulll-shitt A Nigerian goes to an American financial consultant's office for help because he always never has funds even though he was well paid. After an hour of talking with the Nigerian, he told him that he needed to make better life choices. The Nigerian man did not understand. The consultant stressed that the man needed to plan properly for eventualities. The Nigerian still did not understand. Fortunately, another Nigerian working as a consultant in the same company was walking by and he overheard the conversation and told the consultant that he could help better explain. The Nigerian consultant looked at the guy dead in the face and said "your people for village de do you. You need to go back home go beg the witches and wizards. Dem don curse you. Then go church go pray make God protect you". Instantly the Nigerian man was like, "I talk am. My grandmama na winch and took of running". The Nigerian consultant looked at the American consultant, who understandably was shocked, and said "if you want to explain anything to a Nigerian, just add "curse", "witch" and "God". Trying to explain things logically is a waste of time. |

omonnakoda: This business of rights of others as the ultimate test of culture is funny and naive.First the rights have to be defined in law.For centuries blacks had no rights in America so there was no question of impinging on their "rights". What rights do Palestinians have? What rights for Aborigines or Native Americans? You use Western logic and frameworks showing no understanding that there ARE ALTERNATIVES. You reason at a very high level, for an undergraduate. But at some point you need to graduate to YOUR OWN ideas and thoughts. It is a recurring theme that the least knowledgeable are often the most opinionated Like I said you are too used to it so it is not a problem for you.show me a culture that infringes on the rights of others in today's world. |
Culture › Re: Oro: Curfew To Hold Tomorrow In Ikorodu,lagos... Women To Stay Indoor by Bollinger(m): 10:06pm On May 09, 2016 |
omonnakoda: First what is culture. Pornography has to be part of culture before it can be a business. Define culture?# It is not a business in Nigeria or much of AFrica and the reason is because it is not part of culture in Africa. With much respect you do not seem to understand the word culture, certainly not in a scholastic sense. Leaving that to one side, You say the culture is barbaric . That is an emotional one and I take you back to my earlier post and to cultural relativism. How do we decide what is barbaric. First you must define it. Is bull fighting barbaric,is incest barbaric is boxing barbaric is gay marriage barbaric?
You use a western framework to define what should be a good culture .This is really a sad example and illustration of the degree of how our people are brainwashed.Anyway my point was not that Oro is good or bad but that there are objectionable cultures EVERYWHERE and the fact that we have some is not unique and therefore not grounds for self loathing or self denigration. In time when culture lose their usefulness they are discarded . The use of terms like Nigerian mentality are not only unnecessary and inappropriate they reflect a profound lack of self identity and completion of spiritual colonization I wonder why you still don't get this. Or you just don't want to because you are so used to this. Any culture or norm that infringes on the rights of others should be done away with. Anyone can worship whoever or whatever they want but it should not affect my rights as a citizen. |

The people conducting the Oro festival are not the police nor does it have the legal backing of the law so how and why should should they infringe on others rights. Anyone can worship whoever they want to, but should not affect the rights of others. |

omonnakoda: You talk about mentality but you do not offer any reason why it is wrong other than visceral emotive stuff and the assumption that the rectitude of your convictions should be clear to all. There are cultural practices that are abominable all over the world so do not denigrate Nigerian mentality,if you have a point make it.
I will give you a simple example to illustrate the point. P0rnography is legal and so commonplace now in the West that many do not question it. Without offering my own view there are cultures that find this bizarre. The issue at point is cultural relativism and a need for own culture to impose its quirks as normal but there is no SI unit of what is normal it is really a matter of choice like choices to permit bull fights in Spain or even boxing around the world. In Germany it is legal for siblings to have sex
Some may find boxing more objectionable and one cannot agree on intellectual grounds. These are emotive issues let us not pretend that there is anything intellectual going on when gay marriages are legalized. Societies make choices that other societies reject that is the diversity of human development we do not need to denigrate ourselves for our own particular set of quirks. I would rather have Oro festival in Ikorodu than Gay marriages Lol...Bros is comparing pornography, a business, to a barbaric culture. I thought he was going to give examples of actual cultures. None of your examples indicates threat to life. Oro festival does. Any culture that infringes on the rights of others is insane. The true concept of freedom is alien to you anf a lot of Nigerians, which is why you don't understand. |

MURUNGUS And that ladies and gentlemen is the reason the Nigerian mentality is so phucked up. They have been so used to absurdity that it is now normal. I feel so sorry for you though. EgunMogaji: Thank you a thousand fold.
I am from Ibadan and I will never use a night time picture to justify my city.
A few meters from that same Challenge roundabout was a human corpse for about 5 days. I called a Policeman who was at the roundabouts attention and he told me to go away. In fact I was told that I was lucky not to be questioned for the death.
Ibadan is a dirty nasty place, mostly, sure there are a few pockets of graceness in GRAs, etc but let's be frank with each other.
When we face the issue then we can solve it. I am not an Ibadan indigene that's like an Ostrich with his head stuck in the sand.
Like I said in my signature, if you're from Ibadan and what I wrote bothers you then put some poison in your amala and eat it Can you imagine? |

Are the pictures not beautiful? Abi na your father build am for Iboland? Lol.....The number one problem with Nigerians is the inability to face the truth. This is why it's condition has not changed for over a half century. Little things dazzle you all too much. I can't help you if you don't know the difference between a photohoped image and one in real time. Plus, why is it that when showing pictures in Nigeria, it is always from the good parts. Every city in the world has slums but Nigerian cities are more slum than city. The sooner you start pointing that out the sooner you can start changing things around. P.s I ain't Igbo.

whirlwind7: Here's a wet dream I have been experiencing lately....
Imagine that the country has been clearly delineated into the original six Geo-political zones, with each zone contributing the best of what it has been known for, prior to independence.
SW: region was the powerhouse for export produce such as rubber and cocoa. Just this region rivaled Ghana and Ivory Coast in cocoa production! Don't forget the gold and limestone deposits! SE : region noted for palm oil and commerce. Folks from this enterprising region knows no limit when it comes to trading. Integration was never their problem. Add that to the coal deposits. NC : held sway with food crops such as yams, tomatoes, onions, beans, groundnuts...you name them. Add that to iron, tin and other minerals! NW: was noted for quality hides and skins (leather) and cattle NE : Noted for cattle, hides and skins SS : Fishery, rubber, oil palm produce.
We got oil, we got independence, and we all lost our senses! The Black Man mentality got us in a choke hold. For how long are we going to practice a system of government that hasn't lifted us out of this quagmire of over 50 years? Don't people get wiser anymore? Regionalism is the way to go.
Well, since the bulk of our political leaders have suddenly gone deaf and dumb over the issue of the rampaging herdsmen, we are not to eat any other food except beef. Fried meat for breakfast, barbecued beef for lunch, and go to bed chewing a strip of kilishi.
I am totally fed up with a country that doesn't know a true and immediate danger when it's around the corner. If any other people except the Fulanis were wrecking this havoc across the country, the northern oligarchs would have fully armed every almajiri to lay to waste the rest of us. Somebody should tell Bubu that ranching doesn't require a genius. Even stark illiterates can score A+ when it comes to this very simple concept of animal husbandry. Nice analysis but you are mistaken in one aspect. No amount of solution will be effective if Nigerians don't change the way they think and do business. Little things like littering, stopping jungle justice, respecting each other space, etc. There are steps to being a great nation. The way it's citizens think matters a lot. As it is, Nigerians act like animals so nothing you proffer will work. Can you rationalise with animals? |
