An Abuja federal high court has discharged and acquitted Robert Azibaola, a cousin of ex- President Goodluck Jonathan, of the $40 million laundering charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Azibaola was charged alongside Stella, his wife, and their company, One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited for the alleged diversion of $40 million meant for the supply of tactical communication kits for special forces. The money was allegedly transferred from the account of the office of Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA) with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the domiciliary account of their company. Delivering judgement on Monday, Nnamdi Dimgba, the judge, ruled that no credible evidence was given to establish the allegation of money laundering against Azibaola. He noted that the prosecutor should have produced Dasuki as a witness. “That the EFCC and the prosecutor cried more than the bereaved,” the judge held. “That the prosecutor has not been able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the 2-count charge against the defendant. “The defendant is hereby discharged and acquainted and not guilty.” During the trial, the anti-graft agency had called 10 witnesses and tendered 27 documents before the court, after which it closed its case on January 23. Chris Uche, counsel to Azibaola, then filed a no- case submission to dismiss the charge against his clients. Uche said the prosecution had failed to establish a nexus between the defendant and the alleged offence. https://www.thecable.ng/court-acquits-jonathans-cousin-40m-fraud

Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has faulted Nigeria’s electoral system which he says has been under assault. Jega also alleged politicians used university lecturers to commit irregularities during the elections, particularly in Kano state. According to Guardian, the former INEC chairman spoke at the annual conference of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria at Bayero University Kano (BUK). He said the BUK lecturers who worked with politicians to perpetrate “all sorts of irregularities” betrayed the confidence reposed on them by compromising the electoral process. A former vice-chancellor of BUK, Jega oversaw the 2015 election which was widely described free and fair. “I think the major crisis in Nigeria’s democracy is that our electoral integrity has been under assault, compromised and undermined by those who have control over the process,” he said. “Look at what happened during the last elections, and the story of irregularities being spread even in the four walls of BUK. “The politicians, through crooked means, got alliances with lecturers in the university to compromise the system and they perpetrated all sort of irregularities, which pave way for a faulty process for the continued entrenchment of bad people in governance. “Maybe, I am preaching to the converted or I am talking nonsense but frankly speaking, I am beginning to think that we are not taking the obligations of scholarship and intellectual engagement with the seriousness it deserves.” https://www.thecable.ng/jega-some-lecturers-in-kano-conspired-with-politicians-during-the-elections 1 Like |

ABUJA – PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on
Tuesday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE said
that the next four years of his administration will be
a harvest and consolidation of successes in the
three-point agenda of fixing the economy, fighting
insecurity and corruption Speaking at a town hall meeting with members of the Nigerian Community in the UAE, President Buhari pledged more government investments in research and development, as well as technology and educational institutions. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, the President also promised that the prudent economic management, diversification of production and revenue bases of the administration in the last four years will be sustained for better prospects for all Nigerians. President Buhari meets with Select Nigerians in Dubai, He said, “The Next Level is to consolidate whatever we have done till 2023 and it makes common sense that in order to manage any outfit, whether a nation, state or organisation , you have to secure it. ‘‘We all know how many local governments Boko Haram were occupying. People from the North-east know that they are not holding any local government today. They were holding 17 out of the 774 local governments before we came in 2015; they are not holding any now.” At the interactive session, the Nigerian leader noted that a key objective of his administration which had yielded positive results, in the last four years, was the campaign for the nation to return to agriculture. He said the nation cannot afford to lag behind again in agriculture. ‘‘What we did was to encourage agriculture, and fertiliser was made available at half the price. ‘‘We encouraged people to go back to land. The response was excellent. We have virtually achieved food security; we have stopped the importation of rice. ‘‘The money we have saved in foreign exchange is in hundreds of millions of dollars, not even in naira. We are putting that into infrastructure,’’ the President said. Responding to a question about the pace of anti- corruption war, the President said: ‘‘Whoever calls me Baba-go-slow, I’m very conscious of historical antecedents. You know what happened to me the last time… people [now] have to be proven guilty before they are locked up.’’ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/04/whoever-calls-me-baba-go-slow-buhari/ |

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation has criticized those rejoicing that the five Nigerians, arrested for allegedly robbing a bureau de change in Sharjah, Dubai of Dh2.3 million Dinars, are all Igbos. The names of the suspects, who had gone to the UAE country on a visitor visa, were given as Chimuanya Ozoh, Benjamin Ajah, Kingsley Ngoka, Tochukwu Alisi and Chile Ndunagu – making them all from the Igbo extraction of Nigeria. Speaking on the matter, the former minister said the rest of the world view the robbers as Nigerians and not as Igbos and their behaviour is a reflection of us all. He wrote; I pity those rejoicing at the fact that the boys who were caught robbing a BureauDeChange in Dubai were Igbo. Awakan said things weren’t that easy for Johnson abroad, especially at a time aliens lived in fear of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He wanted somewhere quiet where he could think and concentrate,” Awakan said. “He had a baby boy with his South African partner and Kola was planning to bring his boy, Tayo Johnson, to Nigeria this December when he would be four years.” GENTLE AND EASY-GOING Awakan described his brother as an easygoing man who hardly threw his own troubles at anyone. “He will never allow you bear his burden, he will rather suffer the burden silently. Even if Kola is going through pain, he would go inside and try through the pain without telling you.” ![]() This was where Johnson sat while watching the match JUST ENDED SEVEN-DAY FASTING With his eyes soaked in tears, Awakan told TheCable that the deceased had just rounded off a seven-day fasting, seeking God’s intervention in his situation before his 36th birthday in July. “He broke his fast around 4pm. He called me, he said brother, things are not easy and I need help, I need changes in his life and that was why he embarked on a seven-day fasting,” Awakan said. Buba Marwa, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse, has said of Nigeria’s estimated population of about 180 million, there are 15 million drug addicts. Marwa, who was former military governor of Lagos State, referred to the development as alarming. He said the global average rating of drug use and abuse is five per cent, noting that “In Nigeria, we are at 15 per cent.” Marwa made this claim on Wednesday, in Kaduna, in the company of members of his committee, when he addressed officers and men of Katsina Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). “We have an emergency situation before us regarding the issue of drugs abuse in Nigeria,” he said. He said the Nigerian government decided to raise the committee to proffer recommendations and steps to be taken to resolve the issue of drug abuse in the country, Marwa had earlier visited the Katsina Government House, where he told Governor Aminu Bello Masari that the committee commenced work last December. “We started our work since December and finished the plenary and now we are visiting states across the country. “On the whole, we are facing the supply side of drugs, in terms of cutting the supply because you must have drugs first before the use. Government agencies involved need to be strengthened to be able to carry out their functions effectively, and the demand side appears to be more difficult to handle. “We also need to take the preventive measures to ensure that those who do not take the drugs remain so. We have to interface with esteemed leaders across the country. We feel that there ought to be committees on drug abuse, right from the federal to the local governments and across the communities. “We do not know that the causes of drug abuse include, but it’s not limited to poverty, joblessness and idleness which translate to looking for jobs. Rehabilitation and counselling centres are few. We will interface with religious organisations and traditional leaders and also examine the Almajiri situation and embellish with western education. The Almajiris, in the course of their training, do other things that are not good for them.” In his remarks, Masari described the state’s borders as porous, adding that “unscrupulous elements exploit the situation to smuggle illicit drugs and other substances into Nigeria.” “The fundamental issue which we have to address is massive investment in education. The most effective way is massive investment in public education, because that is where you have over 90 per cent of the population,” he added. http://saharareporters.com/2019/03/29/‘nigeria-has-15-million-drug-addicts’ |

The federal executive council (FEC) has approved the inclusion of the presidential villa in the eligible customer policy to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the villa. In a statement on Friday, Hakeem Bello, special adviser on communications to Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, said the approval is aimed at achieving improvement in the electricity supply and distribution in the country. According to him, the approval was made at the FEC meeting on in response to a memorandum submitted by the minister seeking approval to include the presidential villa in the distribution expansion programme earlier approved by the council. The eligible customer regulation, which was issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in mid-2017, permits electricity customers to buy power directly from the electricity generation companies (GenCos), other than distribution companies (DisCos), in line with the provisions of section 27 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act 2005. The programme seeks to enable unutilised 2000 megawatts (MW) from the GenCos to be distributed to targeted metered customers. “The Ministry had earlier obtained approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) following its letter to the Bureau intimating it of the Council’s approval of the Distribution Expansion Programme with the intention of the Ministry to procure civil works that would facilitate uninterrupted power supply to the Aso Rock Villa and curb the present erratic supply of power in spite of the availability of power by the Generation Companies (GenCos),” Bello said. “The project to be executed by Messrs Dextron Engineering Limited, has a completion period of six months under the Distribution Expansion Programme. An arrangement has also been put in place such that a GenCo, North-South Power Company Limited, will procure the dedicated supply to the Villa from the National Grid while the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has indicated interest to ensure success of the project.” ENDORSEMENT FOR A STERILE REGULATION TWO YEARS AFTER INTRODUCTION In February, the federal government had asked GenCos to find eligible customers for its stranded power as the payment for shortfalls might end soon. On March 1, 2017, the federal government approved the sum of N701 billion as power assurance guarantee fund for the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader (NBET) to pay for the electricity produced by the GenCos to the national grid and as well cover the shortfalls. The two-year intervention ended in December, 2018. With the current reality that no licensed customer has benefitted from the eligible customer policy two years after it was unveiled, the patronage from the presidency gives a strong endorsement to the directive, encouraging more buyers, especially manufacturers who require uninterrupted power supply for industrial use. This will also encourage GenCos to produce more energy, as they currently produce less than their installed capacity of 13,000MW, in as much more eligible customers are ready to buy them. It will also reduce the constant issue of load rejection by DisCos, as the rejected energy will be diverted to eligible customers. A young schoolgirl has tragically fallen to her death from a plane while she was trying to skydive on her birthday. ![]() Vanessa Ivonne Melendez Cardenas was celebrating her 18th birthday with the 1,300ft parachute jump in Mexico A schoolgirl girl plunged 1,300ft to her death on a birthday skydive after her parachute failed to open - and the operator insists its chute wasn't to blame. Vanessa Ivonne Melendez Cardenas, 18, died along with instructor Mauricio Gutierrez Castillo, 34, in Morelos, Mexico on Sunday. She arrived at the Albatroos Air Sports Club with her loved ones at around 3pm and was keen to celebrate her 18th birthday in style. Along with a group of others, she was assigned to Mauricio, an experienced instructor with more than 400 jumps under his belt. The pair boarded a plane, from which they jumped and soared through the skies for at least two minutes, local paper El Grafico reported. In footage shared on local reports, a man can be heard saying: "My God, I hope that Liz come this way," as other skydivers land. ![]() This is the moment high school student Vanessa plunged to her death along with instructor Mauricio Gutiérrez Castillo But moments later he realised "Liz", Vanessa, was not among them. Emergency services scrambled to the scene at around 3.43pm local time, and found two bodies near the Mexico-Acapulco highway. Jorge Gaitan, director of Albatros Parachuting, said the fall was not an accident caused by a malfunction in the equipment. Instead, he insisted one of the two victims had caused the horrific fall. He said: "We are investigating, but the parachute was working well. "Everything seems to indicate that the release of the parachute was not an accident, because it was activated. "It wasn't equipment failure or anything like that. It surely had to do with someone who was on that flight, who manipulated and activated the release mechanism." ![]() Vanessa and Mauricio's bodies were found lying metres away from a highway The skydiving company said the parachute's release was activated at an altitude where "it was impossible for the parachute to respond". Gaitan added: "That doesn't end up happening by accident: it is caused by a human. "We are in those investigations. We still do not know what happened." The area remains cordoned off by police as they carry out investigations. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/8736954/girl-plunges-death-birthday-skydive/ 4 Likes 2 Shares |
