– Professor Osinbajo says corruption is fighting Nigeria – He says the country is suffering due to corruption in the past – He promises that abandoned projects will be completed Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president has revealed that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari plans to complete unfinished and abandoned projects first before embarking on new ones. The vice president made this known at the 1st national forum on the economy organised by The Nation and tagged: National economy: The way forward. Osinbajo said there were about 31 road projects awaiting completion like the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Benin- Ore road. He noted that the contracts were awarded during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan and that awarding new ones without completing old ones did not represent continuity in government. On the issue of the economy, Osinbajo said Nigeria was suffering due to the issue of corruption. He however clarified that the new administration was not only focused on corruption but also on developing the economy. “People think we sit down to discuss corruption. We do not do that. We have only empowered the agencies in charge to function better like the EFCC and the ICPC not control them. Corruption has enormous resources to fight back. If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us.” The vice president explained that the Treasury Single Account and the BVN has helped to eliminate ghost workers. He said 23 thousand ghost workers have been deleted from the government’s payroll thereby saving the country millions of Naira in monthly salary. “If one person pockets $3 billion in one ministry and another steals $4 billion in another ministry, what will happen to the country? When people already have with them half of the country’s external reserve. “What we plan to do is to eliminate this so that no one tries it in the future. Where we are today is the result of corruption. It is a fight for the future of our country.” https://www.naij.com/792261-plan-jonathans-unfinished-abandoned-projects-presidency.html?source=index_main |

The drainage system in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, is nothing to write home about, NAIJ.com findings have revealed. Our correspondents in the state discovered that there were a lot of dirts in the drainages seen around as it looked like they had not cleaned them in a really long while. A move around other parts of the state capital proved also that the drainage has been abandoned in the state for quite a while. Check out photos from the drainages in the state capital below: https://www.naij.com/789686-see-deplorable-state-drainage-system-ekiti-state-capital-photos.html?source=index_main |

M ichael Wetkas, a detective with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, narrated how Senate President Bukola Saraki allegedly used fictitious names to launder billions of naira. Testifying against the senate president at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), the EFCC detective also claimed that Saraki’s personal account at GTB had an inflow of about N4 billion between 2005 and 2013. “When the defendant was governor of Kwara state between 2003 and 2011. The commission received several petitions from various groups. One of the petitioners was Kwara Freedom Network. They brought several petitions all bordering on abuse of office by the defendant, misappropriation of public fund and money laundering. “Sometime in 2014 the then executive chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde received intelligence reports of suspicious transactions involving the defendant. He set up a team of investigators. Our task was to investigate the intelligence reports. “The investigation report was reviewed by my team. In the course of our investigation, we discovered that there were several companies which were linked to the defendant. Some of them include Carlisle Properties Investment Ltd, Skyview Properties Ltd, LimKvars Ltd, and TIly-lie Ltd. Some of the companies maintain accounts at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Zenith Bank, Access Bank, and other banks. “From the investigation, it was discovered that the defendant maintained three accounts at GTB. The first account is a naira currency account; the second is a US dollar account, and the third is a pound sterling account. “The naira account was analyzed, and it was discovered that between 2005 and 2013, the account had an in-flow of about N4 billion. The major source of in-flow into the accounts was loans taken from GTB within the period. The loans were about N2.5 billion, and the other source of in-flows into the account was massive lodgments by individuals. Other in flows into the account were from the companies. “It was discovered that money was used for the purchase of property. The dollar account was also analyzed. The major source of in-flow into the dollar account was Tily-lie Properties Ltd, which was about $2m. Another source was from Bureau de Change companies. And the rest was cash lodgments by individuals. The cash in the dollar account between 2009 and 2013 was $6m. We discovered that up to $3.4m was wired to American Express Services Europe Limited, which was used to fund the defendant’s American Express Service New York card account number 374588216836009. “The defendant wired over 1.5m pound sterling to Fortis Bank for the purchase of property in the UK. “After that, because of the suspicious in-flows into the account, the bank (GTB) officials were invited. The reason for the invitation of the officials was that some of the individuals who were making the cash lodgment into the account were bank officials. One Oluwa Tujimu reported to the commission. From our of interactions with him, we discovered that some of the lodgments were made through a superior at the bank, Bayo Daudu, who was the relationship manager of the account. In our interaction with Daudu, it was discovered the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant for lodgment in the account. According to Daudu, he goes to Kwara state government house to collect the money from the defendant for lodgment into the account at the GRA Ilorin branch of GTB. “We discovered one name, Abdul Adama, who made transaction 50 times into the account in a single day. The sum was broken down to N600, 000 and N900,000, and was lodged in the same day. Subsequently, after that one Ubi made a lodgment on the same day about 20 times in the same range of N600, 000 and N900, 000. We looked for Adama and invited him. He reported that the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant and stated further that the cash sums that were lodge in by Ubi into the same account were from the accused. “Adama and Ubi were personal assistants to the accused while he was governor. Further investigations revealed that other individuals who made lodgments into the account were fictitious. “GTB said they had done the needful by reporting the suspicious transactions to FIU.” http://saharareporters.com/2016/04/05/efcc-detective-personal-assistant-saraki-deposited-n60000-n900000-his-account-50-times |

Some power brokers in the Peoples Democratic Party are plotting to counter an alleged plan by the current Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to transmute into the party’s presidential candidate in 2019. There is a belief within the party that Sheriff and Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, are planning to jointly run for the presidency in 2019. A reliable source within the party told Punch correspondents that Fayose backed Sheriff for the chairmanship position because he (Fayose) had plans to be Sheriff’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. Two weeks ago, Sheriff, a former Governor of Borno State, had said that God “used Fayose to make me chairman.” Already, the PDP, which is in control of only two northern states (Gombe and Taraba), has zoned the presidency to the North in 2019. A member of the Board of Trustees of the party from the North-East who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was no way both men would be allowed to fly the party’s ticket. The source, a party man of several years standing, said, “This is a joke of the century. These two are controversial. Sheriff has not even been allowed into the party fully. “Now, they are saying he wants to be President. It isn’t possible. That will signify the death of the party as millions would either defect or go and form another party.” A reliable source within the party said some party chiefs were bothered by Sheriff and Fayose’s close relationship. In recent times, both men have attended several social events together including the wedding of Fayose’s niece in Lagos on Saturday. He said, “Sheriff is rich but he is not the richest northern politician in the PDP. He does not have the backing of the northern elements in the PDP given the fact that he is still quite new in the party. Sheriff’s tenure is meant to end by May but there is a plot to elongate his tenure till 2018 and in the process, gain control of the party structure. “He will then resign and run for the presidency but we will not allow him.” The source said, “Already, supporters of Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State and former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, are spoiling for a fight as both governors also have presidential ambitions. In the current dispensation, the governors are two of the most influential PDP politicians from the North. “Fayose has obviously miscalculated. He is going in October 2018 and his immunity will end seven months before Buhari’s tenure ends. With the way he has been attacking President Muhammadu Buhari, I don’t know how he will survive without his immunity within that period. He thinks his support for Sheriff will endear him to northern politicians but they are not happy with him with the way he has been attacking Buhari.” Two weeks ago, the South-West chapter of the party had declared its support for the North to retain the PDP’s national chairmanship position and endorsed Senator Buruji Kashamu as its zonal leader. Another source, a senior party man, told Punch correspondent that the endorsement of Sheriff was a ploy to ensure that he remained as the chairman till 2018. The source who is a member of the PDP Ministers’ Forum, told Punch correspondent that Fayose, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Kashamu were “taking members of the party for granted”. “Sheriff’s plan is to metamorphose from the chairman to the presidential candidate and that was why Fayose brought him in. Fayose, Wike and Buruji are the ones supporting Sheriff for President. The North will get the presidency but their plan will not work because Sheriff is not our candidate,” he said. Why Fayose is backing Sheriff — Aide However, Fayose’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, said Fayose was concerned with governance and thus had no time to be scheming for 2019. Adelusi said Fayose was supporting Sheriff because he wanted the party to be strong ahead of the 2019 elections. He said, “The governor is busy with the construction of three legacy projects the New Oba Market; the flyover and the airport. These are the three legacy projects. He has even said repeatedly that he is not running for the Senate. “His plan is to deliver the dividends of democracy. His support for Sheriff is to stabilise the party so that the party can win again in 2019. The party is almost in disarray due to the exodus of many of the leaders to the APC. He supported a national chairman that can re-engineer the party. His love for Sheriff is based on the love he has for the party.” S’West should produce chairman — Chieftain A chieftain of the PDP in Ogun State, Mr. Fasiu Bakene, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, said the South-West should produce the party chairman. He stated, “The recent call by some members of the PDP from the South-West pushing for the national chairman from the North is nothing but for personal benefit of the major convener of the meeting. “Firstly, since 1998, the South-West had never produced the party’s chairman. Secondly, the Senator Ike Ekweremadu Committee had zoned the presidency to the North. Thirdly, it is an attempt to arm-twist and get favour of the party’s national chairman.” Fayose bold enough to contest any office – Babatope On his part, a Board of Trustees member of the PDP, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said that Fayose is qualified to emerge as the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP. Babatope, who spoke in a telephone interview with one of Punch correspondents, on Saturday, said Fayose had yet to make his rumoured ambition public. The former Minister of Transport, however, said that it was the turn of the South-West region to produce the next national chairman of the PDP. He said, “Governor Ayodele Fayose has not told anyone that he wants to vie for the vice-presidential ticket of the PDP. He is a bold politician, who would come out and contest for an office he wishes to occupy. But so far, all is still in the realm of speculation. “The South-West wanted the position of the national chairman of the PDP but former President Olusegun Obasanjo truncated the aspiration because he wanted to become the PDP BoT chairman.” When asked if he was in contention for the PDP national chairmanship, Babatope said he was not. “I am not running for the PDP national chairmanship. But I will support anyone from the zone to clinch the position. The South-West zone deserves the position. “If the North is producing the presidential candidate, the South-West should have the national chairmanship position” he said. Babatope said the vice-presidential ticket of the PDP would be up for grabs in 2019 while that of the national chairmanship is a pressing issue. “When we reach the river we would cross it. The vice- presidential ticket would be vied for in 2019 but the national chairmanship post is a pressing issue,” Babatope said. http://africanspotlight.com/2016/04/02/things-fall-apart-in-pdp-sherifffayoses-2019-ambition-unsettles-party/ |

1. Inadequate voter education: The electoral umpire has a major task to carry out educating the voters on the dos and don’ts before, during and after elections. There must be a conscious effort to reach the voters physically to demonstrate and educate them on the need to carry out their franchise within the ambit of the law. 2. Failure of the justice system: A situation where politicians who have been indicted for electoral violence in the past are still working freely till this day tend to promote impunity among the political class, who has developed the mindset that they can get away with violent acts during the electioneering period. There is a need to look into the justice system to fashion out ways to prosecute electoral offenders. 3. Unemployment: Majority of the mass number of youths who are unemployed are a ready made army in the hands of unscrupulous politicians. The desperation of the political class to grab or retain power by all means is consistent with the desperation of some of the unemployed youths to survive at all cost. 4. Corruption: Corruption is a menace that has eaten deep in virtually all strata of the Nigerian society. Indeed, the electoral system is not free from this menace as monies constantly change hands during electioneering period to induce, silence or influence the process as the case may be. 5. Lack of internal democracy in political parties: Nigerian political parties have failed in their primary duty to re-orientate politicians within their fold on the need to play by the rules. Worst still, electoral violence is consciously or unconsciously encouraged at the party level when candidates emerge for the main elections. This is due to the flawed processes instituted internally by the parties. 6. Inadequate security: The Nigerian security agencies are most times overwhelmed by the spate of political violence that has been witnessed in the society over time. Several media reports have detailed how security personnel were on ground when these acts were committed, but look the other way because of their limitations in terms of their numbers or tools they need to carry out their duties effectively. 7. Misinterpretation of politics: Quite a lot of people in the Nigerian society believe that violence in politics is a norm. And they have unfortunately, gotten accustomed to the violence that spring up during the electionnering period. In-fact, many youths who are recruited into the private armies of politicians, already have the mindset that their duty is to cause mayhem, foment trouble, intimidate voters a d engage in a brawl with political opponents. This kind of mindset clearly shows that politics have been greatly misunderstood by the political class, the large section of the public and party followers. 8. Poverty: The mass poverty in Nigeria is capable of turning a decent man into a beast within a twinkle of an eye. The political class in the country are aware of this fact, and they use it to their advantage, knowing that getting people on their side is not a big deal, so far they can flash the cash. It is also the norm to influence voters’ decisions with cash and gifts in order to gain their support. 9. Lack of democratic culture: Decades of military rule has affected the psyche of the average Nigerian and indeed Nigerian politicians. Indeed, many are still struggling to come to terms that we are now practicing democracy. Lack of democratic culture is evident in all the stages of the electioneering period from internal party wrangling, to campaign rallies, to political debates and to the interactions between politicians and the public. Efforts need to be made by civil society groups to instill democratic culture in the Nigerian populace. 10. Lack of integrity from electoral umpires: A situation where the electoral umpire clearly show bias for one group over another is a recipe for political violence. Over time, those whose duties are to conduct a free and fair have been at the fore front of electoral malpractices, which in turn results to civil disturbances by political parties that have been cheated. – Embattled Ekiti PDP secretary, Tope Aluko said Governor Fayose was running away from his shadows – Reliving his encounter with security and anti-graft agencies, he accused the Ekiti government of betraying him – The Ekiti state government accused Aluko of turning himself into tools in the hands of the APC The whistle-blower on the alleged rigging of the June 21, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State, Dr. Tope Aluko said he is still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and secretary of the party in the state. Tope Aluko, ex-ally to Gov Fayose claimed the Ekiti election was rigged Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Wednesday, March 30, Aluko said Governor Ayodele Fayose is only running away from his shadows following his (Aluko’s) startling revelations on how the June 21, 2014 gubernatorial elections in the state was rigged, This Day reports. The embattled Ekiti PDP secretary had on a Channels Television programme on January 31, alleged that Fayose got the sum of $37 million to use the military to rig the state’s governorship election which returned him as governor of the state. Aluko said: “ The APC has been petitioning me and it came as a rude shock to me when the government (Ekiti state government) said that I’m Judas. They are the Judas anyway, because they betrayed me. I am still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. According to him, the petition which landed him in custody was written by the APC and he spent 12 days in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), five days with the police and another five days with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives. “ During the interrogations, I was asked so many questions and I answered truthfully. I gave them the answers, because I said I wanted to do restitution and that is what I’ve done. “ So if Lere is now saying that somebody is a Judas. It is Lere that is the Judas. I know what transpired between me and Lere but I won’t say it here, and Governor Fayose, if he is running away from his shadows that is his problem ,” he added. Earlier, the Ekiti state government had accused Aluko of allowing the APC use him, saying he is making millions from the opposition in a bid to remove Governor Fayose. The special assistant to the Ekiti state governor on public communications and new media, Lere Olayink, accused Aluko of feeding the police and the DSS with lies against the PDP. He said: “ Aluko and his likes can continue to run from pillar to post. All their efforts will come to naught. Like the Biblical Judas, we will all live to see how those treating him like their man Friday will dump him .” Several development have followed Aluko’s confession about the rigging of Ekiti election which include the alleged invasion of the state House of Assembly by DSS operatives and arrest of some lawmakers who were detained for days and later released. The Ekiti state government recently raised an alarm over an alleged plot of the APC to destabilize the state. Lere said armed policemen from Abuja have already invaded the state to begin arresting PDP leaders, top government officials and members of the state House of Assembly, an aftermath of the failure of the DSS to coerce members of the state assembly to impeach Fayose. https://www.naij.com/783353-ekitigate-told-dss-police-embattled-pdp-secretary-opens.html?source=index_main |
