The senate on Wednesday, February 10 summoned Bala Muhammed, the immediate past minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over illegal allocation of lands. Dino Melaye, the Chairman of the committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) disclosed this while briefing newsmen in the senate. Also the senate summoned not only Muhammed Bala, but all other concerned actors on land in FCT which include directors of survey and mapping, urban and regional development, development control and land administration. Melaye added that the concerned directors directors affirmed that the allocation of those areas were done with impunity “Aspiration of the founding father has been utterly wrecked by the over-ambitious administration of FCT, most especially the immediate past Minister Bala. “The decision of stop work orders was predicated upon the committee’s assessment. It is important therefore to note that the committee’s decision was guided by due process and the rule of law,” he said. However, Senator Melaye further reminded the FCT administration that this eighth senate is guided by change and will not condole misappropriation of funds or misapplication of the laws as the case may be. “With this administration of change, it is no longer going to be business as usual. This is what justice demands in this circumstance to right the wrongs,” he said. Also, Melaye said that the committee strongly shares the opinion that the Abuja master plan needs to be adhered the city made beautiful by preserving it’s green areas. It will be recalled that Dino Melaye on Friday, February 5, faulted allocation of lands in Abuja to former president Goodluck Jonathan. He made the allegation during a budget defence meeting between his committee and Muhammed Bello, the FCT minister who claimed that the area was supposed to provide tourist attraction for foreign visitors. However, Bala reacted to reports saying that throughout the tenure of the previous administration, all allocations of land in the FCT were based on professional advice, availability of layouts and the provisions of the Land Use Act. He also said that in reference to the Ministerial Hill, which the Senate Committee gave the Department of Development Control directive to stop work, the area was not designated as recreational area or park but was designated as undevelopable among many other reasons. https://www.naij.com/726375-ex-fct-minister-trouble-senate-summons-land-scam.html |

The state will be 50 in 2017 and ahead of the celebration, the governor appointed the Nobel Laureate alongside Mr. Rasheed Gbadamosi to both head the committee. The governor inaugurated the committee at the Lagos house in Ikeja on Wednesday, February 10. Other members of the committee include Hon. He said : “Lagos state will be 50 years next year. 50 years is a significant landmark in the life of any individual, institution or State. For Lagos State, it has been an eventful 50 years which deserves to be fittingly celebrated.” The governor said that even though Lagos is the smallest state in terms of size, it has maintained its position as the economic capital of Nigeria. “Lagos is a land of opportunities, offering all residents the chance to succeed in their vocations and endeavours. Lagos provides jobs to more people than any other State in Sub Saharan Africa. Lagos is that place where you have a chanceto make it if you work hard. “Indeed, Lagos State has justified its creation. He promised that members of the committee would worktowards making the celebration a success. Professor Soyinka likened the celebration to one of the programmes in past editions of Lagos Black Heritage Festival called the ‘Black in the Mediterranean Blue’, saying “It would be used to project the black race not just for the colonial experience and slave trade, but also as a cultural people.” L-R: Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, discussing with Chairman, Committee for Lagos @ 50, Prof. Wole Soyinka, while the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, watches, during the inauguration of Committee for Lagos @ 50, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (middle); Deputy Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluranti Adebule (6th left); in a group photograph with Chairman, Committee for Lagos @ 50, Prof. Wole Soyinka (6th right) and other members of the Committee, during the inauguration of Committee for Lagos @ 50, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (2nd left); Deputy Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluranti Adebule; Chairman, Committee for Lagos @ 50, Prof. Wole Soyinka and Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, during the inauguration of Committee for Lagos @ 50 L-R: Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, in a warm handshake with Chairman, Committee for Lagos @ 50, Prof. Wole Soyinka, during the inauguration of Committee for Lagos @ 50, at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. According to Bishop Onah, money and what money can buy seem to be all that matter to Ndigbo. Most Rev Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka, has criticized the Igbo people for their unbridled quest for money and the attitude of “only money counts”. Vanguard reports that the Catholic cleric spoke about the degeneration of the Igbos while delivering the 33rd public lecture of the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, titled “Intellectualism and the Development of a People” on Tuesday, February 9. According to Onah, money and what money can buy seem to be all that matter to Ndigbo. “Even our proverbial egalitarianism and republicanism seem to have disappeared as the super-rich became the owners of the community and their praise singers remind those who were in doubt that the community or town, indeed belonged to some people,” he said. The cleric recalled that before the Nigeria-Biafra war, the intellectual was the pride of the Igboman; however, everything changed when the war came. “Then came the war, the blockade, the starvation, the surrender, the humiliation and the economic emasculation. Despite the beautiful slogan of no victor, no vanquished, there was and still is, a clear plan to crush the presumably rebellious Igbo spirit and, thus, shatter the myth of the resilient Igboman,” he noted. The fiery cleric further recalled that at the end of the war, the battle of Ndigbo was for survival in “a Nigeria that neither wanted them in its fold nor would it let them go”. He noted that the post war government stripped them to the bare skin of all the material wealth they had acquired before the war. Having analyzed the way most political office holders were selected in Igboland and what they did with the common patrimony when they were in office, Onah concluded that Ndigbo have sold their birthrights to those who have the hard currency to spray. “Before long, the only money counts attitude found its way into the precincts of the churches and, through harvests, bazaars and the unending fund raising programmes for the innumerable church projects, it gradually moved into the sanctuary,” he added. Meanwhile, the special assistant to Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, has stated that the president loves the Igbos in Nigeria. To prove his point Adesina recalled 2003 when Buhari ran for political office. “When the president ran for political office in 2003, who was his running mate? Dr Chuba Okadigbo. And in 2007? Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. If he hated Igbos would he run with them? That shows you the respect and the regard he has for Igbos, it was political reality that compelled him to come south-west in 2011 and in 2015,” he said. https://www.naij.com/724774-catholic-bishop-criticizes-igbos-money-counts-attitude.html |
– Operatives of the Directorate of State Security raided the residence of Bayelsa state monarch, King A.J Turner – The traditional ruler was a very close associate of former president Goodluck Jonathan – The Committee for Defence of Democracy condemned the raid describing it as abuse of power and rights King A.J Turner was a very close associate of former president Goodluck Jonathan. Operatives of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) raided the Maitama residence of Bayelsa state monarch, King A.J Turner, on Monday, February 8. The operatives reportedly carted away some documents, including insignificant amount of dollars, pound sterling, naira and rupee. Although the DSS is yet to disclose why it raided the monarch’s residence, it might be connected with his closeness with former president Goodluck Jonathan. According to Leadership, the operatives carted away the following items: 60 pieces of £50 note; 46 pieces of £20 note; 113 pieces of $100 note; N5,000; 230 Indian rupee; complimentary cards of TRENUR Nigeria Ltd; a document containing account numbers of Miss Havi Mabel Turner; Miss Apelega Inengite; A.J Turner and TRENUR Nigeria Ltd; income & expenditure book of M.D Matelbot Oil Nigeria Ltd; a document on campaign fund-raising; some documents on financial transactions amongs. The CDD made a statement in which it issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the DSS to desist from a glaring war against allies of the former president. The committee also wondered what could warrant the raid of the monarch’s residence if not political vendetta. “Consequent upon the latest action of the DSS invading the residence of King A.J Turner, the civil society situation room is issuing a 24-hour ultimatum to the DSS to desist from this glaring war against the South-south region, particularly allies of Jonathan. “If so much honour and respect can be accorded to the traditional institutions in the North and Yoruba land, same institutions in the South-south cannot be subjected to ridicule in the name of political vendetta,” the statement read. In September 2015, operatives of the DSS raided the government house in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital. Shortly after the incidenet, the state House of Assembly described the raid as an “act of felony, persecution and political vendetta,” and threatened to drag the DSS to court. https://www.naij.com/724322-political-vendetta-dss-raids-residence-jonathans-associate.html |
– The EPL logo will change next season – There would be no sponsor for the 2016/2017 season – Barclays bank vow not to renew their contract with the EPL The English Premier League will wear a new look next season as the league organisers have released a new logo as the symbol for England’s top division over the next several years. England’s elite league will continue without a title sponsor from the start of the 2016/17 season as it would no more be associated with Barclays bank. New EPL logo The decision was made last summer by all the clubs in the and it coincides with the multi-billion dollar television deal which will start from next season. According to the EPL managing director Richard Masters, the league will not be having a title sponsor in the 2016/20167 season. He said: “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known simply as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted to present ourselves as an organisation and competition. “We are very pleased with the outcome: a visual identity which is relevant, modern and flexible that will help us celebrate everyone that makes the Premier League. “We look forward to sharing more details of our new positioning in the coming months.” In 2015, Barclays bank vowed not to renew their £40million-a- year deal when the current agreement expires at the end of the 2015-16 season. President Muhammadu Buhari in the interview granted to the UK Telegraph has touched the issues of the corruption, the Boko Haram insurgency, the Chibok girls and many others. 1. Some Nigerians claim is that life is too difficult back home, but they have also made it difficult for Europeans and Americans to accept them because of the number of Nigerians in prisons all over the world accused of drug trafficking or human trafficking. 2. I don’t think Nigerians have anybody to blame. They can remain at home, where their services are required to rebuild the country. 3. As long as we can establish the bona fides of the leadership of Boko Haram, we are prepared as a government to discuss with them how to get the girls back. But we have not established any evidence of a credible leadership. 4. I receive conflicting information about the status of Shekau. Some say he has been removed and replaced by a less charismatic terrorist leader. I think he must be on the run, because out of the 14 local government districts that Boko Haram used to call their caliphate, they now do not control any now. 5. I am not asking for any of additional military help beyond training missions yet. I want to be briefed first on the situation from the Nigerian military and also the police. 6. I personally was very disappointed that the previous government resorted to mercenaries. I was also disappointed by the recent revelations of how military allocations were also misappropriated. How is it that Nigeria’s military, which has a good record across west Africa, cannot claim back to 14 out of 774 local governorates from Boko Haram? They have to ask for mercenaries from South Africa? How the mighty has fallen! 7. One of the biggest suspect is in Britain now, although I am not going to name that person. But Britain has earned our respect in the way it deals with these matters. Our only problem is that it seems to be too thorough and it takes too much time. If there are obvious cases, like bank accounts, infrastructure houses and hotels, I would hope they could do it quicker, so that we can claim these things back promptly. 8. There are also Nigerians finding their way to Syria too. I don’t know which side, but they may be fighing for Isil. How many, I have no idea. 9. I think we should be very worried because with technology, Boko Haram and other terrorists have become very mobile in all continents, not only in Africa but also in Europe, America and Asia. 10. The legal process in this country is slow, sometimes a little too slow for my liking. But we still respect the system because we know it is thorough and fair. Buhari has once again preferred to be interviewed on foreign platforms before speaking with Nigerian journalists. The president was often criticised for speaking on the crucial issues to foreign media during his frequent trips abroad. But according to Femi Adesina, presidential media aide, the world is a global village; therefore it does not matter where the president addresses the media; whether local or international. However, Buhari’s predecessors also favourited foreign media organisations. President Olusegun Obasanjo’s post-presidency (2009) interview on Hardtalk could be scarcely defined as dignifying. On his own part, Goodluck Jonathan often privileged to talk to CNN about current state of the nation. https://www.naij.com/723177-im-disappointed-gej-hired-mercenaries-fight-boko-haram-top-10-things-pmb-said-uk.html |

On Sunday, February 7, 2016, a dead child was allegedly raised back to life at the Mountain Miracle and Liberation Ministries, a.k.a Liberation City. The occurrence which was like a scene from a Nollywood movie left everyone in the church stunned. The 6-month old child said to have been ill for weeks was brought to the church by her parents for prayers. Unfortunately, the child gave up the ghost as soon as they arrived the church. Her frantic parents eventually wept and pushed their way through to the podium where the man of God, Dr. Chris Okafor, ministered to other people, and he immediately took the child from them and prayed fervently. Then he dropped the child on the altar and commanded her spirit to come back and the child moved! The congregation exploded in tumultuous praise as the child continued to move and even later drank some water! Photo: The Punch Ibrahim Oluyinde, a Lagos-based barber, has reportedly stabbed his mother to death in Abule Egba area of the state following a dispute between the pair. The Punch reports that Oluyinde, who has since been arrested by the police for the said crime, killed his mother on Friday claiming that she was responsible for his father’s death which occurred sometime last year. The Abeokuta, Ogun state born hair stylist reportedly paid his mother a visit in her rented apartment on Bunmi Christopher Close. Abule Egba and was with her until the incident occurred. She was said to have raised the alarm when it was obvious he had other plans and also begged him not to kill her but the neighbours who tried to salvage the situation got there too late as they the woman in a pool of blood when they rushed in. Ibrahim, who reportedly fled the area, was later arrested by the Oko Oba police division after the neighbours had gone there to report the matter. One of the neighbours who spoke with The Punch on the condition of anonymity informed that Ibrahim had lost his father to sickness last year, probably stabbed his mother to death because he thinks she was responsible for the man’s demise. “It was last year that the woman moved in with her husband. She was about 57. She was a goldsmith. One of her grandchildren – the daughter of her first daughter – was staying with her before this incident happened. “The father, however, died last year from sickness. He could not talk for some time before the sickness eventually claimed his life. “At about 2pm on Friday, I was in the kitchen when I heard some sharp cries from the woman’s room. She was calling on neighbours for help. “Others and I went to the woman’s door; it was locked. So, I went round and opened the window, I saw Ibrahim’s hand; it was wet with blood, but he refused to open the door. “We asked him why he attacked his mother; all he said was that it was his mother who killed his father. We were all shocked. The man is a barber. He plaits hair too. He, however, managed to escape. The police later arrested him and brought him to the house on Saturday,” the neighbour narrated. Kolawole, another resident who spoke with The Punch, stated that: “The woman had a granddaughter staying with her. She is about one year and four months. The toddler was crying while Ibrahim attacked his mother. It was God who saved her; perhaps she might have been attacked too. “The strange thing is that the duo had not fought before in the house. Ibrahim did come once in a while to check his mother. He is the second child. He has an elder sister and a younger brother. “When I got to the woman’s room on Friday, he had run away through the back door. We forced the door open and met the lifeless body of Ibrahim’s mother on the floor. He stabbed her several times in the neck.” The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the incident, said: “The police have arrested the suspect for allegedly killing his mother on Friday. He is to be transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.” https://www.naij.com/722871-unbelievable-read-barber-mother-lagos.html mynd44 |
