Mr Mark won with a margin of 12,571, polling 84, 192 votes as Daniel Onjeh of the APC who polled 71, 621 votes. While Mark won in five local government areas, Onjeh won in four. The APC had called for the rerun election to be declared inconclusive arguing that the total invalid votes were more than the difference between the David Mark and Daniel Onjeh. Speaking with newsmen this on Sunday morning after observing a brief Sunday service at his Otukpo residence, Mark said “INEC has declared and there is nothing they can do about it.” He used the opportunity to thank the indigenes of the Idoma nation urging them to support him to further uplift the region. Tafida, also the former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, explained PDP market in Nigeria’s politics was over, adding that the opposition party had lost respect. He further lamented over the manner of leadership in the PDP characterized by insults. The official was quoted as saying: “I have decided to leave PDP, and I will not join another party. I left because there is no focus, if a market is over, a responsible man should go home. Now the market is over. It was good in the past, but now it is the worst, with impunity and confusion. “The party has been destroyed and reduced to nothing, and I have decided to dump the party. I don’t think our stay in the party is wise, because the people now abuse everyone, and no one will even listen to you.” https://www.naij.com/737822-pdp-founder-ex-nigerian-ambassador-dumps-party-shames-leadership.html |

Many Nigerians are gnashing their teeth following the continuous free fall of the naira against the dollar which got to an all-time high of N400 to a dollar at the parallel market earlier this week. However, there are some people who are still making fortune from this economy woe. Due to the country over-dependent on imported goods and services and no thanks to the free fall of crude oil in the international market that brought about scarcity of the greenback in the country. The situation is so bad that most Nigerians purchasing power have dwindled and there is now a renewed campaign for Nigerians to patronize made in Nigeria products, that is being championed by Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, as a way to savage the current dipping of naira. However, in all these chaos, there are Nigerians that are making a killing and subtly praying for the naira to depreciate further. Below are the list of people benefiting from the depreciation of the value of naira. 1. Bureaux De Change operators BDCs operation is very lucrative at the moment These set of people are making a killing with the continuous fall of the naira. Though, the official rate of the country’s currency has been pegged at N197-199 to one US dollar, but the operators speculate on the country’s currency by hoarding it in anticipation that it will fall further. This attitude has made the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on January 19 to stop allocating dollar to operators of the BDCs. The governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, said that operators were wagging a relentless war on the naira. He added that about 2,785 BDC owners were behind the war on naira in their bid to make the CBN rescind on its decision not to allocate dollars to BDCs. Imagine, a situation where the BDCs buy dollar from CBN at N199 and sell at 300. That is over 200% return on investment. This kind of situation has made their operation very lucrative and they will do everything to continue in their business. 2. Commercial banks The banks get the greenback from CBN at N199 and sell at their own price An anonymous source has once said that if you want to steal from a community starts a business and if you want to steal from the whole country starts a bank. This explains the power of banks in a country. Commercial banks in the country like Bureaux De Change Operators are making massive profit from the free fall of naira. The banks get the greenback from CBN at N199 and sell at their own price, no bank as a fix price for exchange of dollars. Some banks even sell at the same price as that of parallel market. For example, if today’s exchange rate is N360 to a dollar and one makes used of one’s debit card to buy something on a foreign site that is where it would be clear of the massive gains raked in by Nigeria banks. 3. Exporters Exporters are now gaining more for their exported products than ever before and would want this trend to continue. Exporters will be working toward exporting more to cash in current slump of the country’s currency. The activities of exporter on the other hand could help to checkmate the fall of naira as more dollars earned will mean more of the currency in circulation leading to the appreciation of naira. 4. Nigerians in diasporas Nigerians in diasporas Nigerians working and living in the USA, the UK and other developed European countries will be making a lot of profit. The fall of naira means more cash for them if they are repatriating their funds home and these set of people will be ever happy as the country’s currency continues to fall. 5. Friends of the CBN Friends of the CBN are allegedly making fortunes There are some people who are close to top echelon in the CBN and are putting their closeness into massive profit. These set of people will have unhindered access to dollar at a very cheap rate and change at the parallel market for massive gain. There is no way they will want the naira to gain against the US dollar as such might mean a misfortune for them. 6. Online business owners Internet business owners in Nigeria still feel comfortable These are online content providers in Nigeria that monetized their sites with foreign advertising platforms like Google Adsense, Content.ad, PropellerAds Media, Amazon Assocaites and others. These set of people will cash real-time on the fall of naira and some of them will be praying that naira continued to slide further. Also, there are some Nigerians that are into big time business like forex trading, website development, etc, who will also get more local currency for the same jobs. https://www.naij.com/737707-six-type-people-benefiting-sharp-fall-naira.html |

A 36-year-old Michigan woman, Anita Sullivan Jones, has set a new world record by giving birth to her 14th child from her 14th husband. The woman at the hospital Infamous Tribune reports that Ms Jones has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records after giving birth at the Harper University Hospital on Tuesday, February 16. She is sad to be the first woman in the world to have children by more than thirteen different men “I’m extremely proud to have broken a World Record,” Ms. Jones told reporters. “My mother always told me that I was lazy and worthless, and that I would never accomplish anything in my life. Now, I’ve shown everyone that she was wrong, and that I can even be the best in the world when I put my mind to something. In fact, I’ve just accomplished something that no one had done before!” Anita Jones says she’s been unlucky with relationships in the past, but she believes that this time she may have found the man of her life. “I’m good at having babies, but I’m really awful when it comes to picking the fathers of my children. This time, however, I think I’ve learned from my past mistakes. Ramón isn’t like all the jerks I’ve dated before. We’ve been together for almost a year and a half, and I really believe it could work between us.” Jones’ thirteen other children looked really happy to meet their new sibling at the hospital. They were also said to be filled with joy for their mother, who against all odds had broken a Guinness World Record, and posed happily for the 2017 edition of the book. The other 13 children at the hospital After their meeting with Ms. Jones, the representatives of Guinness opened a second investigation concerning the record for the number of child support pensions received by one person. The Detroit native is already the beneficiary of pensions paid by 11 different men, and is involved in two other custody cases, which should proceed before the family court over the next two months. The investigation should be over by the month of March 2016, and Guinness will then be able to tell if Ms. Jones holds a second World Record or not. Errr, can they tie the tube of the woman already? What the heck??! https://www.naij.com/735948-woman-gives-birth-14th-child-14-different-fathers-photos.html |

– The EFCC has revealed that $117,000 cash was seized from the home of a former chief of air staff, Adesola Amosu – Amosu is being probed by the anti-graft agency as part of investigations into the $2.1bn arms scandal – Ibrahim Magu, the EFCC boss, held a meeting with civil rights groups – Magu accused some senior lawyers of blocking the government’s anti-corruption drive The EFCC has revealed that $117,000 cash was seized from the home of a former chief of air staff, Adesola Amosu. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that $117,000 cash was seized from the home of a former chief of air staff, Adesola Amosu. Amosu and other senior officers are being probed by the anti-graft agency as part of investigations into the $2.1bn arms scam. Earlier this month, EFCC officials seized houses and other properties worth N5bn belonging to the former chief of air staff and other senior military officers. The Nation reports that Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesman, confirmed that the said sum of money was seized from Amosu’s house. He stated this speaking on the sideline of the meeting held on Wednesday, February 17, between the anti-graft agency and a coalition of civil society groups in Lagos. Meanwhile, Iliyasu Kwarbai, the deputy director of operations of the EFCC Lagos office, revealed that the anti-graft agency might have recovered around $5 million from “looters” but refused to give the details. The meeting was a follow up to Tuesday’s peaceful rally in Abuja, where civil society organisations expressed support for the anti- corruption crusade. Speaking with civil rights groups, Ibrahim Magu, the EFCC boss, accused some senior lawyers of blocking the government’s anti- corruption drive. “While many lawyers have assisted the cause of the EFCC, there are a number of others that are working against efforts to tackle the Nigerian corruption problem. “Many, including very senior lawyers, have continued to lend their skills and expertise to crooks to steal our money and, thereafter, help them to launder same. It’s time for us to say enough is enough. “Since I assumed office three months ago, I have used every opportunity available to send the message that this fight is not for the EFCC alone,” he said. Magu further stressed that other stakeholders must also play crucial roles because the forces they are trying to defeat are formidable. According to him, the civil society organisations are important stakeholders in this crusade because they are the conscience of the people. “We must be bothered that our nation has been raped by politicians, who treat the treasury as their personal accounts. “A nation where monies meant for the prosecution of the war against insurgency are shared by top military officers and their civilian accomplices. “A country where roads, hospitals and other infrastructure are in appalling state of decay because the money that should have been used to improve them have been diverted into private pockets, is not the nation of our dreams. “We have reached a state where we have to ask the crucial question, can we continue like this? No. Thankfully, we have elected a government that is sold on the fight against corruption. $ “By the same token, these times call for vigilance by all in following cases of corruption under prosecution to ensure that we put everyone on their toes. “This would ensure not only the speedy determination of such matters, but that there is fairness and equity in the process and outcomes,” he said. Earlier this month, the EFCC boss also took a swipe at members of the inner bar , when the national executive of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja. According to Magu, some prominent lawyers within the fold of the NBA help those who commit crimes by furnishing them with technical knowledge of how to escape the long arms of the law and how to hide the loot. https://www.naij.com/735340-efcc-recovers-117000-cash-ex-chief-air-staff-amosus-house.html |

– Solomon Arase warned Biafra agitators not to disrupt the peace of the society – He urged them to channel their agitation to the right channel – The inspector general warned that officers would deal with erring agitators Solomon Arase, the inspector general of police has issued stern warning to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) not to carry arms. A report credited to the group informed that they have decided to start bearing arms as a way to defend themselves against security operatives . They claimed members of their group were maltreated and killed by security operatives during protests and vowed to activate a self- defence mode. Solomon Arase warns IPOB members PM News reports that in a statement issued by Olabisi Kolawole, the public relations officer of the police force, Arase warned the agitators not to bear arms. “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a publication credited to the Indigenous People of Biafra “to carry guns in self defence”. “The inspector-general of Police has sternly warned members of the IPOB to reconsider their stand or face the wrath of the extant laws on bearing of firearms.” The inspector general warned that there will be severe consequences against individuals who dared to face security operatives in their discharge of duties or make life difficult for law=abiding citizens. He urged members of the group to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters and anyone who oversteps his or her boundary would be dealt with. “Members of the group should therefore note that it is an offence punishable under the criminal Law of the Federation of Nigeria for a person to have in his possession or under his control any prohibited firearms without licence or permit.” “The IPOB are advised to be guided in respect of the above as the Police Force is poised to uphold the existing restriction over the use of firearms.” He assumed Nigerians of his commitment to their safety as the “police force, complemented by other security agencies in the country, will tirelessly and assiduously work towards eliminating any threat to internal security and social disorder.” Meanwhile, all zonal assistant inspector generals and state commands commissioners of police were directed to strictly enforce the laws against the use of illegal firearms across the length and breadth of the country. However, IPOB has denied that it has resolved to start carrying guns to confront attacks from the security agencies who have been killing their members during protest and prayer sessions. The group insists it is a non-violent one and will achieve its aim without violence. https://www.naij.com/735083-biafra-tension-inspector-general-issues-stern-warning-ipob.html |

Mixed reactions continue to trail the emergence of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). On Thursday, February 18, Doyin Okupe, a former senior special assistant on public affairs to the ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, took to his Facebook to express his regret at Sheriff’s choice. Describing the ex-governor of Borno state as a very adroit and astute politician, Okupe noted that Sheriff was a wrong candidate who was coming in at a wrong time. “The capability of our party, the PDP and its leadership to make grave errors of judgement is legendary. What is intriguing is that even out of power that tendency seems unabating. “Alhadji Ali Sheriff is a longstanding political associate of mine and a very adroit and astute politician of perhaps a sublime class. “But for the post of the national chairman of the PDP, he is a wrong candidate and also coming in at a wrong time. – A ‘budget mafia’ has been blamed for the discrepancies in the 2016 budget – No fewer than 26 DGs have been fired from government parastatals and the president is not yet done sacking – The presidents move to sack more is to purge the so-called budget mafia in the Budget Office – The Budget Office is responsible for providing budget function, implement budget and fiscal policies of the government President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly ordered the complete purge of the Budget Office as a result of the discrepancies, errors and padding of the 2016 budget. A top government official told The Punch on Wednesday, February 17, that many officials would be sacked while the remaining ones would be transferred out of the office. The source explained that the directive was given by the president, who was not happy with the embarrassment that the budget discrepancies had attracted to his government. According to the source, Buhari had been properly briefed of the activities of government officials in the Budget Office and his move was aimed at dislodging the so-called budget mafia in that department. This comes barely three days after Yahaya Gusau, the director- general of the Budget Office was sacked and Tijjani Mohammed Abdullahi appointed as his replacement. Buhari also approved the appointment of Mr. Ben Akabueze as the Special Adviser on Planning to the Minister of Budget and National Planning. The source said: “ The President is really angry over the discrepancies discovered in the 2016 budget. It has been confirmed that it was a clear case of sabotage. It was said to have been carried out by a budget mafia whose members are strongly enshrined in the office.” He noted that Winifred Oyo-Ita, the Head of Service of the Federation has already been given the directive to communicate the decision to the affected officials. The source said the president’s directive would take immediate effect. Recall that on Tuesday, Chief John Oyegun, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said those who were relieved of their positions have been compromised and were sabotaging Buhari’s government . There have been a lot of controversies trailing the 2016 budget. First, there were reports that it had gone missing and that was later cleared up. When it was time for ministers to defend the budget of their ministries before the Senate, there were complaints about how their budgets were messed up. The minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole and minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed , were among the list of ministers who disputed the figures credited to their ministries. The budget mafia was alleged to have proposed a budget of N9.7tn for capital and overhead spending, excluding personnel cost, which was contrary to the presidency’s initial estimate of about N8tn. The inflated figures, errors and inconsistencies in the budget resulted in the delayed the passage of the document by the federal legislature. https://www.naij.com/733972-dad-mistakenly-sends-dick-picture-daughter-see-reaction-photos.html |
The Nigerian Senate seem to have come to the rescue of Nigerians following the increase in electricity tariff by 40%. Senate president, Bukola Saraki at today’s plenary The Senate directed the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the ministry of power and electricity distribution companies to immediately suspend the increase. Recall that there have been protests across the country against the increase in electricity tariff which prompted citizens to march to the National Assembly. The reduction kicked off on Monday, February 1. In a motion, Suleiman Nafiz, a senator who represents Bauchi north senatorial district, urged the Senate to probe how funds given to electricity companies had been spent. He also urged the Senate to intervene and look into factors hindering the optimal functioning of the power sector. ”The Disctribution Companies (DISCOS) have continued to exploit Nigerians by estimated billing system and deliberately refusing to make pre-paid meters available. ”This increase will pave way for additional heavy burden on Nigerians and coupled with the challenges of the economy, it will affect the purchasing power of Nigerian workers,” he said. Deputy president of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu who was in support of the motion said Nigerians are already going through harsh economic realities. He supported the rejection of the new tariff stressing that as representatives of the masses, they must only support policies that are favourable. “As a country on life-support we do not need to add to the suffering of the people, for me this tariff increase is ultra-wicked and unconscionable. We must reverse it immediately,” he said. While making his own contribution, Dino Melaye, a senator from Kogi west asked for an immediate reversal of the 40 percent increase in electricity tariff. He referred to the increase as arbitrary. Meanwhile, the Senate adjourned again to February 23 to give its sub committees on appropriation time to tidy up the 2016 budget. https://www.naij.com/732479-breaking-senate-directs-nerc-suspend-increase-electricity-tariff.html Mynd44 Happy birthday lalasticlala |
At 77, retired General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma can be excused for mistakes such as saying President Muhammadu Buhari was killed in 1976. General TY Danjuma (rtd) speaking at the event To his credit, the Taraba-born former defence minister quickly realised his mistake and apologised for the error. TY Danjuma was speaking at the 40th memorial lecture in honour of Late General Muhammed organised by the Murtala Mohammed Foundation. He is the vice chairman of the foundation. Danjuma who seemed to be on a roll in his ‘comic’ acts, had earlier made the audience laugh when he singled out his state governor, Architect Darius Ishaku for special mention after acknowledging dignatries at the event. He referred to the governor’s recent validation of his electoral victory at the supreme court over Nigeria’s women affairs minister, Senator Aishat Alhassan, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in what appears to be made in a mocking tone. Not done, during the course of his speech, he also declared that Channels Television is Nigeria’s truly national television station, thereby dismissing the government-owned Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), whose director general was one of the heads of parastatals sacked by the federal government yesterday, February 15. After making the audience laugh for most part of his speech, Danjuma who served under the late General Muhammed, in an emotional laden voice, recalled how he had been condemned to death by Lt. Col. Buka Suka Dimka and his gang of conspirators who killed General Muhammed, but he was saved by the grace of God. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may soon invite Goodluck Jonathan’s wife to explain her role in the sourcing and disbursement of huge funds spent by the presidency during the last two weeks before the general elections. The fund, estimated at over a trillion naira, was reportedly disbursed through the Amnesty office to some political bigwigs in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to investigators of the disbursement, the release of about 40% of the funds was authorized by the former First Lady. The operatives of the anti-graft agency are also investigating the source of the funds, which has not been yet established because the former head of the presidential amnesty programme departed from Nigeria. Speaking with The Sun, sources who pleaded for anonymity said that the former Amesty office’s boss “allegedly disbursed the bulk of the money, which was not part of the funds allocated to his office.” “Ordinarily, he should have been here to defend himself against the petitions, but he has refused to show up. It is highly suspected that he is not in any hospital. It was all a dummy be sold to Nigerians. He left this country as soon as he sensed the EFCC may invite him to explain his role in the funds disbursement,” he added. The source noted that the investigation team has already interrogated some aides, including personal assistants and driver of the former boss of the Amnesty office, on the matter. In the past few months, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has increased the tempo of its hunt for public funds suspected to have been looted from the government coffers. Many serving and retired military officers as well as top politicians have been interrogated by the EFCC operatives. It would be noted that Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign has started yielding fruits. A few days ago, the immediate past director of finance and budget of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore O. O. Gbadebo, returned the sum of N84 million to the anti-graft agency. Earlier this year, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and former military governor of Kaduna state, Jafaru Isa, returned N100m out of the N170m he reportedly received from former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki. https://www.naij.com/731913-efcc-may-go-former-first-lady-n1trn-campaign-funds.html |
