TravelRe: Getting A Green Card By Adjustment Of Status: My Yankee Experience by Bossman(m): 11:53am On Dec 15, 2018
Good advice. The earlier you start building that equity the better. Property ownership has always been the window to building wealth, at it still is.

sevule:
My brother did you say that you do not want to get a mortgage now? Abeg rush go get mortgage oh! I bought a house 2 years ago and that was one of the best financial decisions I have ever made. My only regret was that i did not buy a multi family property (duplex, triplex or four plex). Right now I am looking to buy another house to rent out.
Look at it this way, the money you are paying for rent is going to your landlord. If you buy a house, that money goes to you and you build equity in the house. Don't dull yourself, get a mortgage ASAP!

If you do not have anything to hide, and your wife is a legal resident there, or at least whatever visa she has is still valid, you just have to be frank with your intent. I am pretty sure they will ask about what your wife does in the US, etc., and what your plans are. They may look at you as may be not having anything to tie you to Nigeria.

kkole:
Good day to you all,
My very first time on Nairaland. Nairalander, please be easy on me coz i desperately need a way out of the mess i have gotten myself into or maybe about to get myself into.
I have been to many countries and that includes US,Canada, schengen countries and African countries too. To be honest,it has been my intention to send my wife and kids to live in the US but the plan was not suppose to come into play until when my second son is about 10yrs old. Things took a different path when DW wont let me have peace at home, insisting she wants to relocate earlier than i am proposing.
They have been gone for six months and i miss them alot,i want to visit but the fear of what i have heard about people in the same situation as mine worries me.
I need a way out of the mess i have gotten myself into by letting them stay back or the mess i am about to get myself into when i eventually board a flight to the US

@seyewest,looking forward to your advise
PhonesRe: Is It Advisable To Get An Iphone4 In 2018 by Bossman(m): 9:32pm On Dec 09, 2018
Definitely not as a phone. Good music player though. That thing has 3.5 inch screen. Back then, it was ok. I actually have 2. Me and wifey used them back then on AT&T. I removed all the apps, and just use them as music players. And they do a good job at that.

That's correct. From the specs below, all versions of that phone do not support GLO's 4G. Based on my experience, GLO's 4G is not that fast anyway. At least compared to MTN's. I posted my experience in another thread.

Very good advice. Just keep your head up and continue working hard Frank. You have to be somewhat quiet about some of your plans. Don't reveal much to co-workers. Another thing you do NOT want to do, at least here in Corporate America, is talk about salary, or let others know your salary.

Originalsly:
Hmmm..... don't fear the constant hard work at UPS!....look at it as being paid to be a gym rat.... lifting the heavy cat litter and dog food boxes etc...Amazon alone will keep you in tip top physical condition. Aren't you more muscular?...tighter body?!
On promotion thing...... bro...take this from me... don't ever let your co workers know you are going to be in a better position. Don't let them know you're in school studying...that you did the test to be promoted...about your academic qualifications.....etc...do such is to put a target on your back...especially....being a foreigner. See yourself as a crab in a bucket of others.....you try to get up..they will pull you down...there's a hole in the bucket...quietly exit
Your manager is no different...you can rise to replace her....you have no friends in a competitive environment. I doubt whether the manager will have you promoted in January.... don't they need PT supervisors now for the sooo many helpers they hired for this peak period?...that they will lay off in January?
Just keep on working at the same pace you used to. If you do get promoted...be very mindful of how you speak to your wards..... what you say and how you say whatever....people here are very sensitive to the way they are spoken to...speaking to someone in a condescending way is a big no no. Just saying.
You live and you learn......just go with the flow.

That's good. But their 4g speed is very slow though. When I was there last month, I switched to a 4g sim. I did speed test several times, and not once did I experience more than 7 Mbps down. What a joke! OTOH, my MTN sim was averaging about 30 Mbps down.

Considering the roads and infrastructure, it's not really possible to really enjoy these cars in Nigeria. I wonder how folks that use these cars in Nigeria take care of a warranty repair. Or even fix it outside of warranty.

I will not be surprised if, due to this news alone, things start to get difficult at visa offices and entry points for those seeking to do exactly this.

I can chime in a little on this. There is no direct answer to your question. In general, there will be ups and downs in sticks/mutual funds. It all depends on what kind of portfolio one has. I have had more ups than downs. It's always good to hold your funds for the long term. Also, you can either go through a brokerage firm or open an pereonal brokerage account with the likes of Ameritrade, fidelity, etc. and do the transactions on your own. I have both.

I believe what he is saying is that (at least based on my experience of schooling here) the professors provide as much help and resources as possible. They also make themselves available for questions and clarification if needed. OTOH, in Nigeria the professors are the exact opposite...they make life difficult for you as much as possible.

Just saying hello. I joined the Xiaomi club about 2 months ago. After hearing good things about their devices, I bought a Mi Mix 2 Global. Purchased for $400 from a Houston based, Ebay dealer who had already sold 600 or so of the device. So far so good with it. Using it on AT&T here in the US. Besides having all the LTE bands used here, It has all the LTE bands used in Naija as well, so there should not be any issues when I use it there with my Naija SIMs next month. Will just need to visit MTN and GLO shoos to get nano SIM cards. I currently have micro SIMs.

The certifications are mostly geared towards a specific programming language. So if you want to focus on say Java, AWS/cloud computing, etc. for example, you can take those related certifications. You can Google for programming certifications.

lordally:
What of Software Development or App Development??
TravelRe: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Bossman(m): 10:18am On Aug 04, 2018
The most important thing is to learn the basics of algorithms/software development in general. Regardless if the programming language that's used to learn it. Once that is mastered, you can easily move to any language that you need to get the job done. Also, continuous learning and retooling is very important. As this is a dynamic area, and things keep changing. Remember, the programming language is just a tool to get the job done. So once you learn how to get the job done, you can use any tool at your disposal to achieve that. For example, I'm doing java now, but when I went to school, Java was just beginning to show its face. So learnt programming using a totally different language in school.

lordally:
BOSSMAN I'm considering going in Software development ....and I don't wanna make a mistake going into a module that isn't relevant!!! please based on your experience , which aspect would you advice or suggest I go intohuh?
TravelRe: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Bossman(m): 6:26pm On Aug 03, 2018
AI is certainly slowly picking up steam. And there are several programming languages that will certainly aid that, Python, Lisp, Java, etc. So, anyone that's into software Dev., learning any of these languages is plus. Cyber security, virtualization/cloud computing are also the wave right now.

Backfornow:
Its ok. Ive done it too. I think we all have learned that everyone is responsible for themselves in getting the right information.
Being in IT for a long time are you seeing a shift towards AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)? And if so what areas are you seeing that the most now? Suppposedly that is the next thing on the horizon.

I think you guys get my drift. I may have misspoken regarding the $19 minimum wage comparison. However, RN's definitely make more than that here in Chicago. But the bottom line is the IT salaries of $700k and stuff quoted here is definitely not correct. As I mentioned I have been a consultant in this field for a long time. There is no need to believe anything we write here guys. All the info you need is out there.
TravelRe: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Bossman(m): 11:35pm On Aug 02, 2018
Same here. I have seen a lot of exaggerated numbers all over the place here. I am in IT (application development) myself, and have been for a very long time just like you. While there is money in IT, it will not be handed to anyone. You have to work for it and prove you are worth what you are being paid. And believe me, you will be challenged! $700k salary, for real. Common my people! That has to be a joke. In some expensive to live markets, $300k is attainable. Also, I saw mention of $19/hr for a nurse. May be an LPN, But definitely Morgan RN. My wife is an RN and has been for donkey years! That $19 number is barely more than the minimum wage in some places.

So my people, do your research. You have all the tools you need at your fingertips. A lot of the salary numbers quoted here are certainly NOT true at all.

Science/TechnologyRe: How Nigerians Are Wasting Money On 4K Ultra HD TVs. by Bossman(m): 11:55am On Jun 24, 2018
Have to agree. Even here in the US, the cable tv providers have very few 4k content. And one is required to upgrade to their latest cable boxes in order to be able to receive 4k. Unlimited internet data, which rarely exists in Nigeria, is a must as well. Pretty much every Home has unlimited internet here, so that limitation does not exist.

So unless you have unlimited internet and a provider that transmits 4k content, having a 4k tv there in Nigeria, a country where most people still access the internet via their mobile phones, makes no sense.
TravelRe: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Bossman(m): 6:27pm On Jun 07, 2018
Agreed, these IT fields can be considered by those that do not want to deal wit rigor of software development/coding. Project management can be considered as well. The good ones with the right certification get paid well. Of course, the average salary of a programmer is still higher in most cases.

nycdude:
Scrum Master, Business Analyst, System Analyst and Quality Assurance. Those are field you can get the right certifications and get a job that pays average of $40 per hour.

The specs above does not show LTE bands 7, 8, 20, 28 that are used in Nigeria. Unless the specs are wrong. MTN is band 7 and 20 mostly. GLO is primarily band 28.

As long as it does not support all the LTE bands used there, I stand by my statement that it's NOT optimized!

fibonacci2526:
Wrong. The only LTE band it doesn't support is GLO band 28. You might be confusing the Indian variant with the Chinese variant.
