thinkmoney: U are olodo, obviously. Were in your book is the word book. Bible from biblia means book. Overtime the word came to refer only to the scripture of Christians. I am not at this point responding just because I want to reply u, I am responding because of those other people that will come across my responses. This books like the books before them (the Hebrew scriptures) recorded the dealings of God with his people. Infact they recorded the crown of the dealings, the lifetime and life work of Jesus. Many if those new testament books were written by people that were witnesses to these things. And almost all the writers referenced each other writings or mentioned the other in their own writings. This books, by this writers were compiled and accepted to be part of the inspired scriptures way before any canonisation by catholics. So by Gods power and wisdom, their isnt any significant question or doubt you try to rouse up that do not have logical answer sourced from verifiable history and work. You faithless, Godless, dogmatic olodo. You can call me all you want to sooth yourself, na anonymous nairaland cause am. your opening line and characterisation at the end just shows the type of person you are. There’s nothing you typed up here that I haven’t seen before and it’s all rehashed words with no history. thinkmoney: Well, courtesy and ethics demands that if u aren't ready to go about defending whatever ur take is in this kind of sensitive issue, you shouldn't then comment at all. Else u can be dismissed as a rabble rouser or worst as a lousy ignoramous. Where in the Bible was there arrangement for Bishopric to be handed down like some kingship? There were always Christian brothers all through the time since after the death of christ. Many were persecuted and suppressed. No true Christians can enjoy the kind of parley Roman Catholics had with the government of those days and still do. True Christian's are persecuted and suppressed. This is in the bible. True Christians based their teachings and lifestyles on the bible, the lamp and word of God that came from God for the church not some traditions...not the church subjecting the word under it but rather the other way round. I dare tell u that u can not have any sound reason against this logic, else ofcourse u want to be a catholic and bring your reasons from some 'church traditions' of some alien source. Again courtesy and ethics demand you don't talk again unless you bring some proofs to reason on. Sooth yourself, brethen. What flaming courtesy and ethics, na by force. I've commented as time permits but you expect me to respond to every rehashed line you've posted that one finds nowhere in antiquity. Another question for you to chew on based on your 'where in the bible' logic - Where in the bible does it state the books of Matthew, Mark or Hebrews are part of the bible? Where in the bible is the word bible? |

thinkmoney: My friend, I am replying you now because I felt I needed the time to calmly reply u. First, way before even Jesus christ came, the old testament books had already been set josephus and Jerome commented on this. While new testament books compilation has we know them now in most bible had already been set around 100AD. The writers were known (most of them had physical relationship with Jesus) and they made references to themselves. What happened centuries later by Roman Catholic church is just to formalised/ canonized the list of books that were already known, accepted and widely used. The early Christian's were known has book publishers and users (u can get these facts online). Going forward, the Roman Catholic church isn't the continuation of the early Church (I am for the truth. I don't have anything against Catholics). The First church was not a Roman Church. There were a lot of practices that Roman Catholics introduced that wasn't there in the first church. Roman Catholic formal start can be traced back to when Constantine in 313 AD in the edit of Milan ended the church persecution and in 325 made a set of Christians (there was several set at this point. The major being the Arians. These sets were fulfilment of the prophesies by Jesus and the apostles that apostasy will come), the Catholics, the religion of the state. This move was political. Going further, the canonisation of the bible books that Catholics attempted rather was an attempt at messing up the bible. Because they added Apocryphal books that were generally discredited because their sources are highly questionable. (You can understand this more if you take time to search the advice Jerome gave a woman named Loeta about the books of the bible). Sadly, in doing more arms to the bible, the catholic church later played a vital part, by discouraging the circulation of the book of God and in many instances even burning up the bible and people that owned one. The councils that The catholic church organised were way different from the meetings that the apostles used to have to deliberate on serious matters. The apostles were very wary of whatever traditions. They instead based their decisions on careful and painstaking study and crossreferencing of the books that were the then bible. They do not make any decisions that can't be supported by the bible. In conclusion Peter isn't the Rock that the church was built on. The bible verse that catholics do site, is just Jesus calling Peter and telling him that he Jesus, is the Rock that the church is built on. How do we know this? It's simple. You understand the bible clearer when you search other parts that discus similar matter. At several places the bible points to Jesus has the chief corner stone of the church. The apostles are also stones. Infact all Christians in one way or the other are stones in the church. We are the church. Our foundation is on one Rock which is the Christ_not Peter. Peter infact said this himself in 1Peter 2:6-8. So please, eschew sentiments and emotional attachment to falsehood. When greater truths come in,have the courage to accept it. Importantly too, no apostles will attempt to bind or loose against the will of God. That would be praying amiss and against the will of God which is futile and even a sin. The apostles were always careful that their actions and decisions aligned with the will of God which has been expressly stated in the bible alone. I can refute absolutely every line you've got here but I really haven't got the time. Been there done that. All these have been dealt with over centuries. My only question is this - what church do we know its succession of bishops pre this 313AD, where is that church post 313? Afterall the gates of hell isn't suppose to prevail against this church. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Did You Choose Your Current Church? by btoks: 2:22pm On Nov 09, 2021 |
thinkmoney: All this councils happened after the bible was compiled. With whatever tradition the catholic church came up with after this councils, it's obvious they arent obeying the bible were it says no dot should be added or taken away. In another place God told moses, 'Jehovah your God is one Jehovah'. They obviously aren't interested in taking into cognisance christ's stance when he said, 'the father is greater than I am. The bible at Timothy stated that it is complete (emphasis on complete) and good for setting matters straight. The catholic church brought into the church the traditions of men that were prevalent in those days. This is the same thing the bible had warned that we shouldn't do. Churches that have different doctrines most time like catholic church choose to twist the bible to suit their taste and at other times ignore some part of the bible. Example. Can u imagine a GO that has separated from his wife and taken in another be preaching against divorce? This in fact was one reason why Anglican came about. Can u imagine a roman catholic priest emphasising to his congregation the part of the ten commandment where it clearly stated that one shouldn't bow down to images (either to worship or respect)? Ironically it was these same councils that determined the canon of bible ( you may want to ref councils in the 380’s to 390’s),also council of Trent. The bible isn't authored by one person and the bit about adding or taking away only referred to the written book or letter (should any book have been added to Revelations that you cite) The church itself existed decades before any of the NT books were written. Just as they clarified which books belonged in the canon of scripture based on tradition ( some places would have had only one or 2 books while other books like revelations were disputed), they also clarified other matters of faith, morals and church discipline. You can see how the church came together in Acts 15 to decide on the matter of circumcision, these counicils did not end there but have carried on. It is the church which is the pillar & foundation of truth ( 1 tim 3:15) and has the power to bind and loose ( Matt 16 13-20, matt 18. My 2kobo on this as I'm already derailing the original thread. |

thinkmoney: Na u wan dey confuse urself. Bible is there. That should be the sole authority. I swear I am not a JW, but na them they behave like the Christians acts of the apostles describe the most. 2 reasons: 1. If you want to quickly think of people that actively preach. Na them side ur mind go go. 2. Most Christians denominations erroneously, against the clear teaching of the bible, equate Jesus with God the father, confusing everybody. JW clearly teaches that Jesus is the chief servant of God. They even try revealing or reminding people if Gods name. These are fruits my dear. And it's by a trees fruit you know if the tree is good or bad. One thing that ironically go for them too, it's funny in a way, is that they are one of the most hated people. The bible clearly, clearly, clearly predicted that true worshippers will be hated. Where exactly does the bible state that it is the sole authority? How did we end up with thousands of denominations with different teachings if they all went into this same authority without church tradition and guidance? The church of the apostles is a trinitarian one as you can see from the council declarations. |

Moving to Roman Catholic? So he's going to believe that Mary died a virgin and her husband married her to be looking at her as a tourist attraction without consummation.. Vow of virginity by married Jewish women was not unusual in those days as we see from instructions in Numbers 30. Also this was no ordinary family, she was a virgin when she conceived and gave birth to our Lord Jesus, the 2nd person of the Trinity. The bishop most likely believed in the perpetual virginity of Mary before converting anyway; there's obviously a lot more with the catholic faith than that 1 doctrine. |

djon78: Jesus the founder and owner of Christianity was baptized by John the Baptist via immersion baptizm
He was not baptized as a child Rather he was presented to God in the temple by his parents
That's what Pentecostals practice Child dedication and immersion baptizm when an adult
St Paul gave the true significance of baptism to a Christian in Romans chapter 6
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Through baptism we identify with Christ in his death, burial and resurection
Verse 3 and 4 of Romans chapter 6 gives the purpose
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
We are baptized into Christ death, buried with him baptism And as Christ was raised from the dead we also should Walk in the newness of life
Living as new beings that are not susceptible to sin In the flesh or what we call human nature.
This is really the essence of Christianity Regarding child baptism, it was recorded that entire households were baptised in the bible.- (Acts 16:15, Acts 16:31–33, 1 Cor 1:16) A typical household would have included children. We also see the promise of baptism is also for children- Acts 2:39. Circumcision in the old convenant was done on babies and we see in col 2 11-12 how Paul ties in baptism with circumcision Regarding the method of baptism, while immersion was the primary method , we also need to see what the actual christian practice was in the early decades to get a full picture as the bible does not record every christian practice. Remember that not every one would have been close to rivers and there was persecution of christians. The Didache ( a 1st century church doc) has the following on baptism: And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 in living water. But if you have not living water, baptize into other water; and if you can not in cold, in warm. But if you have not either, pour out water thrice upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. But before the baptism let the baptizer fast, and the baptized, and whatever others can; but you shall order the baptized to fast one or two days before. The vast majority of christians prior to the advent of Pentecostals practice child baptism and thus would point to what has always being practised by christians. |

The downside is, you end up excluding and underfunding those who want to do other sports apart from the main government focused sport. Julius Yego of Kenya was one of the great javelinists of the last ten years. And he virtually trained himself (his nickname is Youtube Yego because he learned his javelin basics from youtube videos)..because Kenya has no money for field athletes.
Jamaica is doing well in the sprints...but at the end of the day, not everyone wants to be a sprinter.(Jamaica does have a few good field athletes; a Jamaican made it to the discus event at this olympics for example.) I get it. Although in terms of elite level competition, I suppose it's best to focus on 1 or 2 areas first; get really good at these then with better budgets cover others sports as well. |

A real democracy allows protests. If you go to Downing Street London now, you will likely find a group protesting against the UK Prime Minister. In fact, his motorcade is shouted at mist of the tome Protests keep the government on its toes. You can't sit there thinking all is going well. Obviously protests cannot remove a democratically elected leader but it can make the leader think twice about their actions and in some cases they have to resign if the pressure gets too much. |
