According to reports, President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked officers and men of the Nigerian Army and restored the officials of the Department of State Services, DSS, as his body guards. It was gathered that Buhari gave this directive shortly before he proceeded on his annual vacation to London, United Kingdom, on January 19th 2017.

According to Vanguard, the development might not be unconnected with a series of complaints by the Chief Security Officer, to the President, CSO Bashir Abubakar who was said to have been uncomfortable with the soldiers protecting the president.

Report claimed that the use of army officers as body guards to provide protection to the President started soon after President Buhari moved into his official residence at the presidential villa after being sworn in May 2015, a development that does not go down well with the DSS.

This, the report claimed, sparked cold war between the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) Abdulraman Mani and the Aide de Camp (ADC) to the President, Colonel Lawal Abubakar. While Mani insisted on the operatives of DSS to protect the President, the ADC preferred soldiers to serve as body guards.

It was learnt that the memo which cited the relevant sections of the constitution which empowered the DSS to carry out such security functions were also copied the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Director -General of the DSS.

The memo read in part, “In fact, the issues raised in the aforementioned (ADC’s) circular tend to suggest that the author may have ventured into a not-too-familiar terrain. “The extant practice, the world over, is that VIP protection, which is a specialised field, is usually handled by the Secret Service, under whatever nomenclature.

“They usually constitute the inner core security ring around every principal. The Police and the military by training and mandate are often required to provide secondary and tertiary security cordons around venues and routes.

“However, all other security agencies, including the army, the police and others, also have their roles to play. It is on this note that heads of all security agencies currently in the Presidential Villa and their subordinates are enjoined to key into the existing command and control structure. They are to work in harmony with each other in full and strict compliance with the demands of their statutorily prescribed responsibilities.

“Meanwhile, joint training programmes and other incentives will be worked out in the days ahead to ensure that all security personnel at the Presidential Villa are properly educated to understand their statutory roles and responsibilities. “This is with a view to avoiding obvious grandstanding, overzealousness, limited knowledge or outright display of ignorance in future”.

A source said “protection of the President by body Guards is actually the work of the DSS but Mr. President did not have confidence in the service because of the way they treated him during the campaigns.

“The soldiers were moved into the inner circle of the security network while SSS operated at the periphery. This has not gone down well with both services. Mr. President was convinced to reverse this order”.

The Adamawa State Government has declared a two-day special prayer session for ‘ailing’ President, Muhammadu Buhari.

The state governor, Mohammed Jibrilla, made the declaration yesterday being Thursday 9th, February 2017 after the state executive council meeting which held at the state government house in Yola, the state capital.

In his words:

“President Muhammadu Buhari needs the prayers of all Nigerians to enable him recover from illness and pilot the affairs of the country effectively. “This, we have been doing even before he travelled for his vacation and we will not relent.

“The state, will on Friday February 10th and Sunday February 12th offer special prayers in mosques and churches to God for the quick recovery of President Buhari who is presently in the UK on holiday and medical checkup.”

The wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, through the Asst. Director Public Affairs, Folashade Kadiri, on Monday, called on mothers, women groups and high-powered government organizations, to step up advocacy towards total eradication of female genital mutilation. She made the call in Alausa, Ikeja, while interacting with journalists on the occasion of the 2017 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Bolanle who noted that FGM constituted an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls, violating their rights to health, security and physical integrity, wondered why women should continue to suffer such level of dehumanization, just to get social acceptance or avoid social stigma.

In her words:

“It is surprising that 45 out of every 100 adult women living in Lagos State have undergone FGM at one time or another as reported in the National Demographic Health Survey 2013. This is largely due to migration from those states where the prevalence in much higher.”

Speaking further, she disclosed that FGM is mostly carried out on young girls sometimes between infancy and age 15, and this causes much bleeding and health issues which include but not limited to cysts, infections, infertility, as well as complications and even death in some cases.

Mrs. Ambode noted further that it was erroneous and misleading to tie the gruesome procedure to family honour, hygiene, fertility, protection of virginity and prevention of promiscuity. She called for massive public awareness campaigns and concrete actions against the practice. She contended that only when mothers began to raise their voices against the act and governments initiated strong legislations, could we begin to race toward total eradication of the wicked practice in Africa and the world come 2030.

FGM is inextricably linked with other forms of gender inequality, such as violence against women and girls, and other harmful practices such as early and forced marriages. February 6 of every year has been set aside by the United Nations as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

He is an ardent critic of Buhari's APC administration and now he is out again to stick it to them. Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose has faulted the police over its position that it will not allow the planned protest against the Federal Government slated for February 6 to hold in Lagos State,

Saying; Apart from Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which provided that “Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons…”, the Court of Appeal already affirmed that protest or gathering do not require police permit or interference.

The governor, who described claim by the Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni that criminals might hijack the process as puerile, added that; “The duty of the police to secure Nigerians is mandatory, and not optional. Therefore, if there is any intelligence report suggesting the possibility of criminals hijacking the process, it is the duty of the police to provide security cover for the protesters.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose noted that the APC-led federal government must be made to understand that “leadership is about accountability. To be accountable, leaders must listen to public opinion either by civil or peaceful protest.”

He said;

“Court of Appeal affirmed in its judgement in Inspector General of Police Vs All Nigerians Peoples Party that protest or gathering do not require police permit or interference as obtainable in advanced democracy. “Most importantly, the protest is said to be for and about good governance. So who is afraid of the protest? Who does the police represents or is representing in this issue?”

While justifying the protest, the governor said;

“Nigerians are hungry and angry, our currency is now above N500 to $1. If Nigerians want to show their anger, no one should prevent them. Nepotism, extra judicial killings, disobedience to court order and human rights abuses must stop.

“The conscience is an open wound and the guilty is afraid. If the APC-led Federal Government is now acting as if the protest is against it, it means the federal government has accepted to be guilty as charged. “Like I said before, I support the protest.”

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has released a statement, applauding controversial clergyman and Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, for being vocal in the face of the repeated killing of Christians by some herdsmen in some parts of the country.

In a statement signed by its special assistant on media and communication to the CAN President, Bayo Oladeji, the religious body kicked against last Wednesday's attempted arrest of Suleman in Ekiti state, arguing that his recent comments on the religious crisis in the country is permitted by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They argue that Suleman is entitled to Freedom of Speech.

CAN's Statement

"Apostle Suleman has become a refugee in Ekiti state as security operatives are said to be searching every nook and cranny of the state with a view to arresting him. If there is an urgent need to interrogate Apostle Suleman on any issue, it would only have been proper to extend a formal or informal invitation to him from the SSS rather than Gestapo approach used in the attempt to arrest him.

It should be noted that under Nigerian Laws, he is presumed innocent until a court of law proves otherwise. Or have they extended the proposed obnoxious law that forbids religious preaching without the permission of the state governor down south too? Treating Ministers of God and our members as common criminals is unacceptable to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Enough is enough. The last time we checked, Sections 38-41 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) states clearly that every Nigerian is “entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance.

The Constitution states unambiguously that ‘Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference’. Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests:

Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereby or exit there".

The group called on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is a Christian, to speak against the repeated attacks on Christians, stating that his silence on the matter is deafening

“It is high time the overzealous security agencies knew that Nigeria remains a secular state and any attempt to turn the country into a refugee camp for Christians will not be acceptable and will be resisted with every lawful means.

We call on the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to intervene in all the clampdown on the Church in Nigeria after all, he is in the office primarily to represent the interest of the Christians and his studied silence is no longer golden"he said.
