Travel › 2 Women Found Inside Suitcase Trying To Smuggle Themselves Into Europe - Photos by bumi10(op): 8:52am On Dec 15, 2016
European Police got a shock on their lives when investigating two abandoned suitcases on a train to Vienna when they discovered two Afghan women stuffed inside them.

Romanian border patrol officers stationed in the town of Curtici entered the luggage compartment of the train which was travelling to the Austrian capital having become suspicious of the bags. After deciding to open them, they found two women inside, who were trying to reach Austria illegally.

A spokesman for the police force, on the border of Hungary and Romania, said: ‘Following checks we have established that the two people in question are from Afghanistan, aged 25 and 59.’ They said that they had later also arrested a man from Afghanistan who had apparently run away when he spotted the police officers and was hiding in a different part of the train pretending to know nothing about with the suitcases

The women told police they wanted to get into the Schengen area and had resorted to using suitcases because they did not have a valid visa. Romanian police are now preparing a case against all three for attempting to illegally cross the state border. It was not revealed what punishment they might face.

Is as if banning people from one thing or the other makes them a better person. Banned Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau has had an eventful year filled with ups and downs but nothing can put a dent on her joy today as she turns 23.

She shared these lovely new photos on her social media page to usher in her new age. To be honest with you, i struggles to understand the indecency in the Music Video she appeared on which led to her ban by Kannywood and till now, i cannot fathom it. Because their none.

Foreign Affairs › Checkout The Biography Of Ghana's President-elect, Nana Akufo-addo by bumi10(op): 10:12am On Dec 10, 2016
Ghana's election has come and gone even though the official results of the election are supposed to be announced today but the close monitoring of the elections by international radios and some of the influential radio stations in Ghana has made it easier for the people. In the end, Ghana's opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo emerged victorious, dethroning the incumbent President John Mahama

President John Mahama called Mr Akufo-Addo to concede defeat yesterday, a spokesman for his party said, as the Electoral Commission later announced the result. Mr Akufo-Addo has promised free high-school education and more factories but critics have questioned the viability of his ambitions.

Biography:

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was born and raised in Ga-Maami (Accra Central) and in the Nima area of Accra. His father’s residence, Betty House at Korle Wokon in Accra, was effectively the headquarters of the country’s first political party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), after it was formed at Saltpond on 4 August 1947. Three of the "Big Six" – the founding fathers of Ghana – were his relatives: J. B. Danquah (grand-uncle), William Ofori-Atta (uncle) and Edward Akufo-Addo (the third Chief Justice of Ghana and later ceremonial President of the Republic from 1969 to 1972), (his father).

Akufo-Addo received his primary education first at the Government Boys School, Adabraka, and later at the Rowe Road School (now Kimbu), both in Accra Central. He went to England to study for his O-Level and A-Level examinations at Lancing College, Sussex. He began the Philosophy, Politics and Economics course at New College, Oxford in 1962, but apparently left soon after. He returned to Ghana in 1962 to teach at Accra Academy Secondary School, before going to read Economics at the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1964, earning a BSc(Econ) degree in 1967. He subsequently studied law in the UK and was called to the English Bar (Middle Temple) in July 1971. Akufo-Addo was called to the Ghana bar in July 1975.

Political Career

In October 1998, Nana Akufo-Addo competed for the presidential candidacy of the NPP and lost to John Kufuor, the man who eventually won the December 2000 presidential election and assumed office as President of Ghana in January 2001. Akufo-Addo was the chief campaigner for candidate Kufuor in the 2000 election and became the first Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Kufuor era.

Akufo-Addo resigned from the Kufuor government in July 2007 to contest for the position of presidential candidate of his party, the NPP, for the 2008 elections. Competing against 16 others, he won 48% of the votes in the first round of that election, but was given a unanimous endorsement in the second round, making him the party’s presidential candidate.

In the 7 December 2008 presidential race, he received, in the first round, more votes than John Atta Mills, the eventual winner. In the first round, Akufo-Addo received 4,159,439 votes, representing 49.13% of the votes cast, placing him first, but not enough for the 50% needed for an outright victory. It was the best-ever performance for a first-time presidential candidate in the Fourth Republic. In the run-off, Mills received 4,521,032 votes, representing 50.23%, thus beating Akufo-Addo by the smallest margin in Ghana’s, and, indeed, in Africa’s political history.

Akufo-Addo accepted the results without calling even for a recount, thereby helping to preserve the peace, freedom and stability of Ghana. Akufo-Addo again contested in the 2012 national elections against the NDC candidate, the late Mills’ successor as President, John Mahama, and lost. That election generated considerable controversy, and was finally decided by the Supreme Court in a narrow 5/4 decision in favour of John Mahama. Akufo-Addo is credited with helping to preserve the peace of the country by the statesmanlike manner in which he accepted the adverse verdict of the Court, at a time of high tension in the country.

In March 2014, Akufo-Addo announced his decision to seek his party’s nomination for the third time ahead of the 2016 election. He secured an unprecedented, landslide victory of 94.35% of the votes in the party’s presidential primary in October 2014, in a contest with seven competitors. Akufo-Addo also served as Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Mission for the South African elections in 2014.

On November 30, Addo received the endorsement of the All People Congress in the North region and finally, his resilience paid of as On December 9th 2016, sitting president John Mahama conceded defeat to Nana Akufo-Addo.

Politics › Tokunbo Cars: Reps To Buhari - Suspend Vehicle Importation Via Land Border Ban by bumi10(op): 9:46pm On Dec 09, 2016
The house of representatives has asked president Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the decision of banning the importation of vehicles via land border to the country. The lawmakers said that the policy is too harsh and would further worsen the economic situation of many Nigerians.

The policy is expected to come into effect from January 1, 2017. Instead of enforcing a ban, the House called on the government to ensure that security agencies manned the land borders diligently to enforce the payment of import duties and ensure the remittance of same to the treasury.“The House further urges the government to install border security and surveillance equipment for effective monitoring to address the recurring menace of smuggling and ensure a maximum revenue generation on all lawfully-imported goods,” the resolution stated.

The decision came after an All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Sokoto State, Mr. Abdullahi Salame, informed members that the policy could only worsen the “hunger and insecurity” in the land, and cause job losses. Leading the debate on the motion, Salame said corruption at the borders would increase as Customs personnel would seize the opportunity to divert revenue into private pockets.

“The government will indeed lose revenue and Customs personnel will connive with smugglers to divert revenue. Car dealers will lose their business and this also implies that millions of Nigerians will lose their means of livelihood,” he stated. According to Salame, prices of vehicles will hit the rooftops in Nigeria, making fairly-used cars out of the reach of ordinary citizens.

“A similar exercise in the case of importation of rice has brought untold hardship on Nigerians as a bag of rice now sells for between N20,000 and N23,000 as against N8,000 a few months ago,” he added. A member from Adamawa State, Mr. Sadiq Ibrahim, noted that the buck stopped on Buhari’s table. He said, “I am addressing Buhari. He should suspend the ban; there is no alternative. Why ban car importation through land borders when you have not provided other options for those in the business to survive?

“This policy will serve no useful purpose and there will be more problems than solutions to the hardship arising from our economic situation of today.” Another APC member from Kwara State, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, suggested that the government could modify the policy to reflect that vehicles of certain ages should not be imported through the land borders. “The administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo had such a policy in place before. We can return to that policy or ensure its full implementation this time round, rather than a blanket ban,” Mohammed said.

But, another APC member from Katsina State, Mr. Ahmed-Baba Kaita, tried to rationalise the government’s action, saying that Nigeria was losing more revenue compared to whatever benefits that could be derived from land border importation. For example, he said the country was the final destination of nearly all the cars imported into neighbouring countries through their seaports. Kaita explained, “So, we have a situation whereby these countries collect their duties, improve their economies, but the cars are coming to Nigeria duty-free. We have had instances where even state governments in Nigeria imported their vehicles through Benin Republic, paid the duty there, but would not pay in Nigeria.

“The policy may look harsh on the onset but in the long run, the country will be better off with it.” However, Kaita’s explanations could not convince the majority of lawmakers, who voted in support of the passage of the motion. The session was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

Foreign Affairs › Re: Akufo-Addo Wins Ghana Presidential Election by bumi10(op):
Updates:...............

Ghana's incumbent President, John Mahama has conceded defeat in Wednesday's national election to opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo, several sources said on Friday. The concession quelled tensions at the end of a day in which independent voting tallies showing an Akufo-Addo victory in the presidential and parliamentary election had been broadly accepted but there were no official results.

"The call (from Mahama) came just a few minutes ago," Boakye Agyarko, a senior aide to Akufo-Addo, told Reuters.

Supporters of Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party (NPP) broke into cheers and dancing his residence in the capital Accra when news of the call broke on local media. Car horns blared and fireworks erupted across the city, witnesses said.

Foreign Affairs › Akufo-Addo Wins Ghana Presidential Election by bumi10(op): 8:38pm On Dec 09, 2016
Breaking: Opposition Party's Candidate Akufo-Addo, Wins Ghana Presidential Election

Looks like the battle is over in Ghana's Presidential Elections and it is breathtaking. Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won Ghana’s presidential election with an absolute majority over incumbent President John Mahama, two influential private radio stations has announced today being Friday 9th, December 2016.

Ghana's main opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo, has won the West African country's presidential election with an absolute majority over President John Mahama, two influential private radio stations said on Friday. Ghana is a beacon of democracy in a region that has seen a series of civil wars and coups with a record of peaceful elections in which power has alternated between two main parties.

Joy FM's website showed Akufo-Addo winning 53.27 percent of the vote and Mahama on 44.93 percent, based on its count of 233 constituencies out of 275 in total. Citi FM gave Akufo-Addo 54.97 percent based on 231 constituencies.

If confirmed, the results would represent a bigger margin of victory than either party has achieved in recent elections and validate Akufo-Addo who lost by narrow margins in 2008 and 2012. Mahama appealed for calm and told his supporters he would respect the outcome of Wednesday's vote whether he won or lost, in comments aimed at defusing tension ahead of the release of official results expected Saturday.

In Mahama's words:

"I want to assure the nation that we will respect the outcome of the election, positive or negative, and so let us just be calm," he told supporters gathered outside his house".

His campaign chief said on Friday the party lost many parliamentary seats but hopes to win the presidency. The country is eagerly awaiting official results but Ghana Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei said they would be announced by Saturday once technical issues had been resolved.

Crime › 21 Years After Innocent Man’s Execution, Court Revokes Death Sentence by bumi10(op): 5:34pm On Dec 03, 2016
I don't know how this sounds to your ear but to mine, it stinks like a rotten egg and it is pathetic. A Chinese man, Nie Shubin, who was executed 21 years ago for rape and murder, had his conviction overturned by China’s top court on Friday.

The second circuit court under the Supreme People’s Court revoked the verdict. Nie was convicted of raping and murdering a woman in Hebei provincial capital,

Shijiazhuang in 1995 and executed the same year at the age of 21.

The case re-emerged in 2005 when another man, Wang Shujin, admitted guilt in the case and said Nie was innocent. In December 2014, the SPC assigned the higher court of Shandong Province to review the case and the latter found there were too many questions about the previous trials to uphold the conviction. However, the SPC decided to retry the case in June 2016.

The retrial panel of the second SPC circuit court reviewed all documents on the case, visited the crime scene, verified evidence and questioned former personnel who had handled the case. It also heard opinions from the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, which insisted that the evidence presented in the original trial was insufficient.

The SPC finally announced Nie was innocent on Friday.

Politics › Cross River Workers Condemn Payment Of December Salary On 1st December by bumi10(op): 9:53am On Dec 03, 2016
I must say i am deeply perplexed on the actions of civil servants in Cross River State. Civil Servants in Cross River State on Friday protested a move by the state governor, Ben Ayade to pay their December salary on the first day of the month.

The civil servants had received their salaries on the first day of December. According to the workers, the decision will cause hardship during the holidays. A top civil servant in the Ministry of Environment said, “The state government’s decision to pay December salaries of some civil servants within the first three days of the month will make us suffer in due course.

“The government should have employed caution by delaying December salary payments to a later date. Our governor may want to score a political point with this payment, but I think that those of us receiving this money stand to lose fiscally when January comes.”

One of the governor’s aide however said the civil servants should be appreciating the governor instead. “People are so impossible to please. There are states in this country where salaries are not paid as and when due, but in Cross River State, our governor pays salaries and even pays ahead to cater for special occasions like the Workers’ Day and this Yuletide.

“Instead of applauding him, some people say he shouldn’t have paid. Nigerians are difficult to please.”

What is wrong with Nigerians?

Sad news reaching us this morning - A fatal accident in Tegina town in Rafi Local Government Area, LGA, of Niger state, saw no fewer than fourteen persons roast to death. The unfortunate incident, which happened on Friday, was reportedly as a result of a fire caused by a petrol tanker.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident to newsmen said that the Commissioner of Police, CP, Alhaji Zubairu Muazu, had visited the scene of the accident. He said the command would investigate the cause of the accident.

The tanker was conveying petrol from Lagos to Kaduna when the driver lost control and rammed his vehicle into some residential buildings in the town.

People gather at the scene next to the bodies of the victims after a Nigerian petrol tanker tipped over in Okogbe on July 12, 2012. More than 100 people who rushed to scoop up fuel after a Nigerian petrol tanker tipped over on July 12 were killed when the vehicle and pools of spilled oil caught fire. Children were among those killed, while dozens more were badly burned, despite a warning from troops who arrived at the crash site that a blaze could ignite at any moment. AFP PHOTO/STR

The collision ignited a fire which claimed the lives of the people who were trapped in the buildings and others selling by the roadside. About eight houses were completely burnt and properties valued at millions of naira including vehicles were destroyed in the inferno.

Five persons, who sustained high degrees of injuries, are currently receiving treatment at Tegina General Hospital in the state.

Even if you are a woman, you are bound to sweat...lol. The actress recounted this experience she supposedly had with a stranger recently, via her IG page. In her words:

“I saw him staring at me…I noticed him sweating and uncomfortable.. We were stuck at d waiting room for over 40min. Don’t know what was causing his discomfort. But I kept quite…when it was time for me to go in…I jokingly said…hi…hope your ok.. A problem shared is a problem solved .. Found out all he wanted was to chat me up and get a number.. lol
