After spending my University years in the states, one thing I have learned is that Americans are the last people on the planet I would ever considered as a reference point ... grin

Do you know that some Americans don't even know that Canada and the US share a borderline?
Do you know that one time someone asks me if Canada was in the Caribbean?
Do you know that someone asks me if in Africa the time calendar is break into 7 days a week, 12 months a year ... ?
Do you know that ... I could go on and on ...

Lmao. You don't have to tell me, I know and met some of them. But they also have Canadian versions. That never left Manitoba or got on a plane. I had one ask me if I'm Egyptian one time. However, the ignorance is more with the Americans than the Canadians. So I get your point. Lol

Hey, you never know what your kids destiny may be.
How do you know if one of your children is called to be the next General Governor of Canada.
Do you know that Michaëlle Jean was a refugee from Haiti who come to Canada when she was 12 ?
Life is just full of unpredictable curves. Maybe your kids may end up not liking the US.
As indicated by Nogen, don't deny your children the opportunity to learn French if that opportunity present itself.
You just never know ...

I totally understand you and Nogen. My concern is I have 2 languages I speak at home with my kids. We want them fluent in Igbo, unlike these new generation parents that see native languages as "local". So we speak Igbo to the kids and English where they don't quite get what you're saying to them in Igbo. Of course they learn And communicate in English from school. Now my concern is if the French schools have a no English policy, my kids will be fluent in French from school and fluent in Igbo from home......English disappears. That's the concern I was raising at your initial post.
I wanted to know where and how they would continue English? I'm really concerned about this, if I sort out their not forgetting English, then it's French school all the way for them oh.

For the newbies of which i am one of them, truth be told..if u wana succeed in the EE adventure, biko..mbok..abeg..buy a small notebook and save any info you get here. Some questions have been answered here severally. Today i simply stumbled on where to do your medicals and all i did was to write them down. Did same for PCC. On page 0 you have loads of info..print them or write down key info. Please take a step first then if you get hooked, you can then ask questions. Also try to play around with google and CIC site. All the best.

You obviously no read well or write properly in that your notebook. How can you advise someone that has BSc and PGDE to evaluate only BSc and you say you have taken notes. Notes from where biko? If I talk Thames valley product now, una go come for megrin

Let her evaluate her Highest qualification which is her BSc. As for transcript, my advice is let her apply for it to be sent by her University. Dont forget WES will verify.

This is wrong information.

If they're ever interested in international jobs they'll have to contend with trilingual Europeans and Asians. Then the French will come in handy.

I'm in that field of work and no where has French been asked of me. Neither have I missed out on projects because I couldn't speak French.
How many Americans speak French? Spanish? Yes but not French.

Nice. The Daycare where my son attends has been asking me to speak French to him at home. I told them NO. For now, the children only speak English at home. They can't afford to lose that.

Lmao @ capital NO.

You see that's my concern. French is wonderful and all but my kids are American Nigerian citizens and I have a good feeling they'll abandon Canada when they're in their college age to America. So French won't do them any good there. For me, having them learn French is for efizzy things grin

Finally found the answer to my question from the first page http://www.cic.gc.ca/pp-md/pp-list.aspx
I can find approved places for my medicals even if I’m outside Nigeria. I hope it would be helpful to others.

Lol you have been helpful to yourself. I told you to go and research for yourself and you did. Good on you.

However I hope you understand how EE works and what ITA is etc. All the best.

Good day house, i would be traveling to canada for holiday( would be spending two months there) with my visitor’s visa. I’m applying for the EE and I’m in the pool already. Now my question is if I’m called for my medicals, can i do it there in canada or I’ll have to wait till i get back to naijs. Pls its quite urgent.

You don't even understand the process you're applying for. No one CALLS anyone for medical in EE. Please go to page 0 of this thread and read up to understand and that your question is very much invalid.

@Ifeoma77...WES does not require your certificate for evaluation. All they need is your transcript. I am also shocked my transcript has not gotten to WES aswell. My school in the UK said i will take atleast 3weeks for it to be delivered bearing in mind i used standard delivery. This week will be second week

See them Thames Valley or Southbank uni people grin

Just got off the phone with my school angry I requested for, and paid for transcripts to be sent to WES since late march. They haven't sent it. angry
And UK schools are supposed to be stress-free angry angry
Thank God I decided to check on the status of my ECA. WES has been showing 'we have received your documents, you don't need to do anything at this time'. Ive been waiting for completion, not knowing that it's only the certificate that they've been accessing since.
Guys, don't just trust these people, they are swamped with work, use the phone lines and disturb them. Immediately after speaking with the WES rep, they updated my status to indicate that the certificate is accepted and the transcripts had not been received.
I called the school, hoping to at least hear that it's in transit already...
Oh well, better late than never

Maybe na Thames Valley University you go for Thamesmead, you know say na Yorubas dey the student records grin or those Paki colleges handled by Indians grin

Please can Abuja folks be kind enough to share their recent experience of medicals at IOM and abuja clinics? How long it took, was it crowded etc, when were results uploaded etc. Trying to decide on which to use smiley

Happy May 1! And for those moving soon enjoy the break, cos if I'm not mistaken, it's not a public holiday in Canada.

What to expect for medicals in Abuja Clinics, Amazon Street, Maitama.

Medicals are only done on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. 8am - 1pm. Please go early because it can take up to 4 hours.
Go with a copy of your passport data page for you and every member of your family on the application.
The fees are s follows:
Adult - N48,000
Child (below 10 years) - N10,000
I have no idea cost for kids above 10 years old. Didn't ask either.

When you get there:

You'll be asked to fill a hospital registration form for you and each member of your family. You'll be asked to pay N7500 each for registration. Don't be alarmed. It's part of the entire fee to pay. They will just ask you to pay that bit first.
We refused to split our payment becoz it meant going to the cashier at every stage and using POS. No. We asked them to add up everything and we will do one POS transaction. I can't be paying you money and you'll be sending me up and down the hospital angry grin

Anyway after the forms, they'll take a digital photo of you and your family each. Then send you off to the nurses for vitals. The nurses will take your weight (for those obese on this thread, well grin, your height and blood pressure. They'll send you to go see the Dr.
There's only 1 doctor assigned to this Canadian /Australian matter. For accountability I guess. She's a female Dr. She'll do a check on you and review your vitals from the nurses. If there are any concerns, she'll let you know. Then she'll send you off for blood work and xray.

This section is downstairs. Please be advised Abuja clinics dey do construction, so na so so noise and dust with heat dey that downstairs/basement.

Your blood will be taken then you go for the chest xray. If you're female, better wear clean bra that day because you'll have to expose the chest area for the xray to be done. Better to wear a top and bottoms. I wore a dress that day, na so I had to strip down to only "paiiinntt" grin

From there you go back upstairs and complete your payment if they split it for you. You'll be given consent forms to sign and given Information sheet to upload to your application as proof of medicals. And they tell you bye bye. You can decide to go see the Dr again to find out when she'll upload her own. But she usually uploads it that day.

Shikena! You're done.

Thanks for this. The doctor at the walk-in family clinic was really helpful. Are there any walk-in maternity clinics in Alberta? OR you have to be referred to one by a family clinic?

I think that's how it usually works in most cities. At least I can speak for Winnipeg. I saw my family doctor at a walk in clinic during my time there until I left for the U.S to have the baby. Anyway I remember him telling me I see a family doctor until I'm 28 weeks and he would have to refer me to an OBgyn. My understanding is to get an Obgyn, you have to be referred by a family doctor and you can do that by going to a walk in clinic when you land. It's pretty straightforward after that.

No to worry.
First of all, Kids in Canada who attend French schools outside Quebec can't forget English given that they are growing up in an English environment. Just as your kids in Nigeria go to an English speaking school but they can still speak Igbo.

And second, the Catholic French First language Schools in Ontario are strictly French from Kindergarten up to grade 6 .
English is introduced after grade 6.
By the time the kids will be ready for high school, they will be fully bilingual.
They will be fluent in both French and English.
If you want to put your kids in a French school and that you have any concern in regard with "forgetting English", I will strongly advise you to discuss with the school. They will be able to alleviate your concern.
As for me, I will tell you not to worry because your Kids will never forget English unless you live in some parts of Quebec.

Please be advised that in some jurisdictions in order to put a child in a French school, there must be an adult in the child's household who speaks French. I know for a fact that it used to be like that for public schools in Toronto 15 years ago but I don't know if this has changed now.
Here in London you can put a child in a French First language Catholic school even when no one in your home speaks French.

Thanks for this. I'm going to do my research for Ottawa.

@adewa1980, you have two choices,
1. If you don't have to land in canada in a hurry due to medical or passport expiration, give birth in nigeria, then send notification to CIC for the new addition. It would cost you much less than paying out of pocket.

2. If you need to be in canada urgently, then read this thread diligently, get the basics of the process, begin to use google to search out hospitals in your desired location, hit the phone lines and start making calls. Where possible, if you have friends already in ontario, then get referals from them...
https://www.nairaland.com/1346880/giving-birth-canada/65

hope this helps..

Option 1 is out of the question if she's anything like me. Birthing in Nigeria scares the heck outta me. With all these rude nurses one encounters during antenatal classes. God forbid bad thing.

Perhaps you should re read the message in its entirety before responding. COPR means confirmation of permanent residence and not a visitor’s visa

Your blood dey hot oh. His point is that folks on here won't know the answer to paying for medical costs because they're PRs and citizens. He didn't mean that you are on visitor's visa but in Ontario as you rightly pointed out, you are not eligible for healthcare when you land just in time for your delivery. Meaning the best option for you would be to seek out the thread on how visitors pay to have their baby in Canada. Hence his referral. You come dey think he no know wetin be CoPR. grin

Meanwhile hope you know you aint a PR until you land and sign the papers. So as you still dey naija, you aint no PR of Canada.

@ TheCongo2, didn't want to quote your long post about the benefits of a French Catholic school. I just have a question, do they also teach English in those schools or it's entirely French? Reason I ask is I'm concerned that my kids will forget English and just speak French and Igbo grin
When they return to Naija, wahala go dey grin

Actually the marriage certificates issued by some Muslim organisations like NASFAT, ANSAR DEEN et Al are always the same as the ones you guys get from churches (licensed ones) and registry but not all Muslims weddings are overseen by these organisations hence lot of people get their certificates from unlicensed or unregistered mosques.

@ the bold, so some folks (Christians included who use all these mushroom churches) are basically cohabiting and think they're married. Lol that's just weird.

No offence to any religion but it seems it's mainly Muslims that have this your problem. Christian marriages usually give or you're required to get a certificate from the government too. But most Muslims just do Nikai (so) and call it a day.
