White flight and Racial segregation in the United States

Urban areas in the U.S. can often be classified as "black" or "white", with the inhabitants primarily belonging to a homogenous racial grouping.[11] Forty years after the African-American civil rights era (1955–1968), most of the United States remains a residentially segregated society in which blacks and whites inhabit different neighborhoods.

Many of these neighborhoods are located in Northern cities where African Americans moved during The Great Migration (1914–1950) a period when over a million[12] African Americans moved out of the rural Southern United States to escape the widespread racism of the South, to seek out employment opportunities in urban environments, and to pursue what was widely perceived to be a better life in the North.[12] In the Midwest, neighborhoods were built on high wages from manufacturing union jobs; these in-demand jobs dried up during the decline of industry and the ensuing downsizing at steel mills, auto plants, and other factories starting in the early 1970s.[10] Segregation increased most in those cities with the greatest black in-migration and then crippling economic decline, epitomized in cities like Gary, Indiana.[13]

In the years following World War II, many white Americans began to move away from inner cities to newer suburban communities, a process known as white flight. White flight occurred, in part, as a response to black people moving into white urban neighborhoods.[13][14]

Discriminatory practices, especially those intended to "preserve" emerging white suburbs, restricted the ability of blacks to move from inner cities to suburbs, even when they were economically able to afford it. In contrast to this, the same period in history marked a massive suburban expansion available primarily to whites of both wealthy and working class backgrounds, facilitated through highway construction and the availability of federally subsidized home mortgages (VA, FHA, HOLC). These made it easier for families to buy new homes in the suburbs, but not to rent apartments in cities.[15]

In response to the influx of black people from the South, banks, insurance companies, and businesses began denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking, insurance, access to jobs,[16] access to health care,[17] or even supermarkets[18] to residents in certain, often racially determined,[19] areas. The most devastating form of redlining, and the most common use of the term, refers to mortgage discrimination. Data on house prices and attitudes toward integration suggest that in the mid-twentieth century, segregation was a product of collective actions taken by non-blacks to exclude blacks from outside neighborhoods.[20]

The "Racial" Provisions of FHA Underwriting Manual of 1300, included the following guidelines which exacerbated the segregation issue:

Recommended restrictions should include provision for: prohibition of the occupancy of properties except by the race for which they are intended …Schools should be appropriate to the needs of the new community and they should not be attended in large numbers by inharmonious racial groups.[13][21]

This meant that ethnic minorities could secure mortgage loans only in certain areas, and it resulted in a large increase in the residential racial segregation and urban decay in the United States.[22]

The creation of new highways in some cases divided and isolated black neighborhoods from goods and services, many times within industrial corridors. For example, Birmingham, Alabama’s interstate highway system attempted to maintain the racial boundaries that had been established by the city’s 1926 racial zoning law. The construction of interstate highways through black neighborhoods in the city led to significant population loss in those neighborhoods and is associated with an increase in neighborhood racial segregation.[23]

By 1990, the legal barriers enforcing segregation had been replaced by decentralized racism, where whites pay more than blacks to live in predominantly white areas.[10] Some social scientists suggest that the historical processes of suburbanization and decentralization are instances of white privilege that have contributed to contemporary patterns of environmental racism.[24]

The IMF CAN impose austerity measures on america if america goes into default and requires a bail out (as was the case with Greece) you have to understand that the IMF operates as an autonomous entity with powers which supersede sovereign nations.  The banking institutions are a separate and much more powerful entity than sovereign govts, their modus operandi is economic hijacking of the economy of any independent nation that defaults on its debt, it is the lender of last resort but the loans it gives come with draconian  strings attached - usually, mass sell off of all valuable public sector assets and the givign up of ALL of your sovereign rights - in other words any nation which takes on IMF loans has to turn over economic control of its nation to the IMF, they succeeded in doing this in nigeria when they recommended that we allow foreign investors to gain a 49% stake in our air industry as a result we now have virgin nigeria which is partly controlled by richard branson - a british national.  the IMF also recommended that we sell off PCHN again to "foreign investors"  what they did to us is similar to what they are doing to Greece but because Greece is a european nation that is why we are hearing the dissenting views, in our own case our govts quietly collaborated with the IMF and kept us in the dark about what they were up to, the only time we understood what had happened was when the austerity measures started biting us through currency devaluation, hyperinflation and mass unemployment, the same thing is going to happen with Portugal and if america defaults on its debts there is no reason why america will not go down the same route.

I think  if you were a psychiatrist you would not immediately conclude that he is NOT insane without having first hand knowledge of his mental state.  There is no way anyone can know his mental state until he undergoes a psychiatric assessment by a qualified psychiatrist.

It is possible that he may be insane, there are many insane people living in our midst who APPEAR sane but are not.  For example sociopaths are known to behave like sane people but they are regarded as borderline insane because they are capable of committing the most heinous acts even against blood relatives without feeling any sense of guilt - many of these types of people remain undetected because they do not go on to kill people but they are very different from "normal" people as they are incapable of feeling guilt or remorse for terrible acts that they commit throughout their lives.

perhaps this man is a sociopath. I actually hope that he is sane as i would want him to be executed because of the pain and misery he has brought to his late wife's family.

Who knows whether he is mad or not, i am not a psychiatrist and unless you are one (which i doubt) no-one can tell whether or not he is mentally ill, the only way this can be dispelled is for him to undergo a psychiatric assessment, if he is found to be mentally ill -he should be locked up in a maximum security facility for the criminally insane for the rest of his natural life , if however, he is found to be sane then he should be executed.

The more i read about this case the more sickened i become. For those posters saying that women should not use pregnancy to trap men - i say to them - it takes two to make a baby, if you know you dont want to be lumbered with an unwanted pregnancy from a woman you do not love - keep your trousers zipped up.

From all accounts of this story the only person who seemed to be gaining from this marriage was the man, this woman was supporting him financially and emotionally, in return all she received were regular beatings, unfaithfulness and on one occasion she came home from a hard day's work to find that he had even sold her car.
There have also been accounts of him trying to ra.pe their house maid who ran away, i think the handwriting had been on the wall for a long time for this young lady but she chose to remain blind, i really feel for her dad who saw all of this coming and advised her to call time on this marriage.

its funny but when you think about it, america is becoming more and more like a third world country every day - the gap between the rich and the poor is widening, there is an all out assault on middle income workers or the middle class , the rich want to take away social welfare safety nets from the poor like health insurance and social security, education is now becoming too expensive for ordinary people, food prices are rising, unemployment is rising, inflation is rising and the dollar continues to depreciate.
