Again read the charges, she was not charged with defamation but cyber bullying or whatever, that's ERROR #1!

Furthermore, we all know there's no way she'll get a fair trial, as she's a nobody and human rights activist lawyers are not that good.....The problem here is that absence of any law that protects the consumer in cases like this, the loser will 99% of the time be the CONSUMER!
Whatever she's charged with is in court. Only the court can do justice aside God.
Like I said, whoever wins, I don't care. What I care about is the lessons companies and consumer public will learn from the saga.

Again a consumer has the right to review the product or services consumed! This is non debatable! There's something called cause and effect, a product does not need to directly cause harm for it to be harmful.

Exhibit one:
Vegans accuse meat eaters of eating carcinogenic items aka red meat.

We have over 100 scholarly and well researched studies that shows red meat is carcinogenic.

We have thousands of people that die each year due to cancer from bad diet.

Are you saying as a meat company, you would sue such a vegan?

Exhibit two:

Climate change is real

A climate activist claims that deisel factory is polluting the air causing climate chnage which can result in people dying.

If you're the owner of that factory, will you arrest the activist even tho there are empirical evidence that confirms air pollution is having a disastrous effect on climate.

In summary, the charges does not correlate with the offense, it is hogwash and nonsenstical and can only succeed in a dystopian country like Nigeria!
You can give bad review. Nobody is against that. There's fine-line between bad review and defamatory review. And as you should know by now, only the court can and will decide what is defamatory. Nobody else can.

Let the court decide. I'm not here to speculate, and I don't really care who wins either. What is important is either ways, companies and the consumer public will learn a thing or two from the whole saga.

Uhuhn. Good attempt. I understand what you're trying to say, however:

Saying vipers and demons is a figure of speech meant to convey a different meaning within a certain context. You didn't actually start looking for vipers or demons.
It's killing people obviously has to be interpreted within proper context. Was she talking about people dying or was it a figure of speech meant to convey a different meaning.

Who was she talking to, and what led to what? Proving defamation is so incredibly difficult even when the intent is clear, much less here when you have to dig into the comment section to find one line that's paraded without proper context.

Again, who here doesn't do hyperbole when the conversation gets heated. Should you go to jail everytime that happens.

If you're an incredible jerk who thinks this is worth ruining someone's life over, it's very well within your right to try, but you'll be pushing that boulder up a very steep hill. In s normal trial, the lady will win and even have him pay for harassing her. How do you arrest someone on a civil accusation? No conviction and you have the civil liberty violated.

Summary: any which way you twist this, the man is a toxic stew of hatred and abuse. The lady should maybe be a bit mindful of comments but no more than the rest of us.
Be civil a bit.

If anyone feels aggrieved in dispute, the right thing to do is to approach the court. The judiciary will do their job. For me, I really don't care who wins. What is important is the lessons companies and the consumer public would take away from the saga.

Bad reviews are a norm in any market.

Go the website of any brand you know and go check least rating reviews. They get lambasted often and don’t get people arrested.
Bad review is welcomed.

You can make reviews which can be good or bad, but don't make false/defamatory reviews. There's a fine-line difference between a bad review and a defamatory review.

Chioma's review turned from bad review (...it's too sugary) to defamatory review (...it's killing people).

CASE CLOSED!
That's exactly what she's sued for. i.e to come forward and defend her review.

It's not so simple the way you deposit it up there. You have to now show the nexus with that particular product with empirical evidence, i.e any known case of death as a result of consuming that product.

Does everybody that takes sugar have diabetes? No

Was Sugar content stated on the tomato mix can? Yes

Did Chioma read the content before buying or even before reviewing? I doubt!

Was Chioma intended to buy "tomato paste or tomato mix" ?

.......So you can see the fact that Chioma doesn't need Sugar or indeed too much sugar doesn't mean everybody doesn't need it.

Do you know the sugar content in most of the fizzy/carbonated drinks is almost half of the bottle itself?

So if I say nairaland is a useless cesspit of vipers and demons, Seun should sue me and send me to jail ba?

This is simply a case of the powerful oppressing the rest of us.

If Buhari's son made the same statement would he be in court now?
If they charge him to court, he'll very likely win on the merits of the case. Same applies to this lady; it's very likely she'll win the case if the case were treated fairly.

And even if she were to lose the case, how exactly has she deserved to lose her freedom?
Calculate how much damage she's done and have her pay for the damages.

This should even be a civil case not a criminal case so I don't know how far up his butt the judge's head had to be to reach this conclusion. O wait, corruption. That makes sense.

I shaa pity us ordinary Nigerians for not having enough sense to see how this is a problem for us. We're there talking about how pained he was. I bet if it's revealed that his company does so and so damage to the environment we'll just look away like nothing happened.

He'll rather die than watch his 40yr reputation get damaged. Newsflah slowpoke: this is your reputation now. Where are the hardcore feminists to meme this as a clear case of male toxicity.

Please stop defending rubbish. Please.
If you say "nairaland is a useless cesspit of vipers and demons"
......that's a soft allegation which you could be true.

But if you then add... "those vipers and demons post messages that makes people commit sweetcide"
.......It becomes a strong allegation which Nairaland can sue you for to defend.

Chioma made her point, but the part she added "it's killing people" was where she got it wrong.

Even if she lied with malice I don't see how this is a criminal case.

Nigeria Judiciary keeps sinking by the hour. If it was a magistrate court I won't talk much, but how a full federal court takes up this non case and won't dismiss it instantly surprises me.
It could be a criminal case if it's found that there are syndicates behind her actions.

At the moment, the "syndicate point" is still an allegation. There could be people (esp. importers of tomato paste) behind all her actions, including the post and the media interviews.

Yes, NAFDAC did and her claims were false so let her come forth with a prove
Her proof is a matter of opinion. In her own view it's too sugary. Nothing wrong in her expressing her opinion. However, I personally think she took it too far with the part that says "it's killing people".

Anyway, I think there's more to this case that meet the eyes. It's sad enough that she's had miscarriage. May God heal her pain.

If she wins this case, mhennnn, Umeofia may be sued for damages that could take him out of businesses.

Also, the "over my dead body" comment from Eric is too deep. I pray he hasn't speak/ill-wish himself to past. The man is too loud mouthed for my liking. Ordinarily, he should have just allowed the company's media or customer relations to handle the issue.

I'm absolutely fine if anyone decides to get a loan for pilgrimage. That's his/her personal decision. Afterall the loan is not taken in my name or your name.

What I'm concerned about is government using our collective purse to fund individual/personal pilgrimages that doesn't benefit the society. That, I don't support.

It is not only in Nigeria Partner. In the USA you can file for bankruptcy and discharge for all your related debt but not for Student loans. Why is that because the banks inserted that clause into the student loan, Student loans originate from the USA treasury which is money given to the banks to administer by loaning it to the students the banks make money based on the interest repayment of the loan. Biden is currently in the process of forgiving some students loan with a limit of $50000. Hard to believe but before 1980 tuition at all public universities in California used to be free. Then Ronald Regan was elected then tuition was no longer free. Tell yaa the Conservatives will always find ways to fu*k things up. Just ask someone living in the United Kingdom currently. How they are enjoying the BREXIT they voted for.
Not sure I get you correctly. But my point is why can't people going for pilgrimage also get loans for their journey just as we are asking poor Nigerian students to get loan for education?

Abi pilgrimage and education which one is more important? Yet we are asking poor Nigerian students to get loans while the government is paying the rich to go "fornicate in foreign lands in the name of pilgrimages"

Christian pilgrimages are funded too. But both are wrong in a country that's asking students to get loans for education.

Everybody will not be like you. And to each his own standard. Your standard is for yourself and not an authoritative standard for everyone.

Whenever my friends are having anything to celebrate, whether they ask for contribution or not, me and my circle of friends contribute.

As a matter of personal principle, I don't attend events or party without giving something towards that course. I don't go to party to spray money. I would rather give the money to the celebrant. And that I find comfortably to do well ahead before the party.

The world is filled with several perspectives. The lens and authority to view it doesn't reside with you alone. The fact that you don't take contributions doesn't mean it's a rock solid standard for everybody.

To the glory of God, I'm quite comfortable. Atleast I've been to all the continents of this world. So financially, I can say I'm moderately ok. Nonetheless, I don't do for myself what others can do for me. It's the spirit of camaraderie, and togetherness that's important to me and not the perceived boastfulness or feeling of pride that I single handedly do this and that.

I will leave you with this that might help you in future.

Close drainage system is good but not effective in Nigeria because we don't have stable electricity. Those subway drainage have underground pumps that evacuates flood. Over the years, those installed in Festac and major cities in Lagos were either stolen, spoilt and rusted away. Also our lack of maintenance structure makes us to opt for sustainable option. There are several developed cities of the world that opt for open drainages as well.
