some schools can only give you after you have earned GPA
Some can give just after you have been admitted
Also, search for positions on your school GA openings listings it must not be in your department

Good morning all,

Please I need your advice on the next steps to take.

I already bought a return ticket to travel for my annual vacation next week Tuesday (July 5) on my B1/B2 Visa before I got an offer from the University of Maryland for MBA/MSc Information Systems (Fall 2022) with partial funding and a graduate assistantship.

I have made the first deposit and the school has sent the I-20 with the earliest admission date of July 23 and a program start date of August 22. However, I am yet to apply for a student visa because the available dates are way after the start date.

Please I need your opinions on whether it is wise to proceed with my travel as planned and try to change to F1 after I arrive in the US either by going to Mexico or wait in Nigeria till a date becomes available because I don't want complications. A newly admitted student in the same program told me that she paid an agent for an interview date but hasn't gotten in more than 2wks. I don't want to pay an exorbitant fee to change my ticket and still not get an interview date to enable me to join this cohort. That would mean deferring till January 2023 and the funding isn't guaranteed.

Please is there anyone here who has gone the route of applying for an F1 visa from neighbouring US countries or changed from B1/B2 to F1 in recent times? Please what is the success rate? I know that applying from Nigeria isn't certain and I am mindful of that as well because if the student visa is denied, entering the US on a visit visa becomes questionable because of a change of intent.

I have extensive travel history and never overstayed my visas. I have renewed my US Visa multiple times without issues and do not want to jeopardize that.

Please help.

Hello. Please does emergency appointment time fluctuate just like regular appointment. I got emergency visa appointment approval today and was seeing November 2022 as earlier date. I then logged out and login again and saw 17th August. I logged out for the second time, when I log again I saw that 17th August elapsed. Now the earliest is 18 August. Kindly advise me as my start date is 19 August and I’ve three days to schedule my EA.

1. Since you are applying for a student visa, you must show POF for your kids and spouse if they will be accompanying you. There’s no way around this unless you are a PR or citizen.

2. Your school can give you a breakdown of the POF required for each child and/or spouse. You need this POF for both the I-20 & visa interview.

3. I told someone here to be mindful of advising people that they can just change status, but he fought me over this. Your husband needs a company to sponsor him for the H1B work visa in March 2023, if he gets picked in the lottery he can then adjust status in October 2023. The H1B lottery is always drawn in March, so the company must register him before then. I’m not going to lie, getting H1B sponsorship from F2 is going to be really hard.

I have 2 kids both are citizens so I will be applying F2 for hubby but the school says show POF for every child and spouse, is this still necessary for my kids?

Ans - you do not need POF for the Kids just update their passports and fly ( do not mention your kids to the school again
only request for F2 I-20 for your husband.

2. Will the VO not check my POF and say it's not enough for the whole family, though, from what I have read, hubby will say he is not staying just coming to visit with the kids when they are on holidays.

The only thing you should take for your kids is proof of medical bill payments and Zero balance from the hospital so that if you are asked you can show them.
Yes POF will be checked for your husband. Your kids can come and stay with you, if hubby can come why not
My husband is in Nigeria though due to his job its not easy for him to pack up and fly

3. So, is it possible for Hubby to change status from. F2 to maybe H1B. What is the process.

Good day my people. First of , all thanks goes to GOD. Trust me guys, GOD is real..I realized today how faithful GOD truly is. I have been a silent reader here for close to a year now. Decided to go offline and carefully study this thread to avoid distractions..I made sure I read through all the pages on this thread including every transcript posted here. So I got to abuja late last night due to some unforeseen circumstances. I woke up to the sound of pouring rain and thunder this morning around 5:30am. Hurriedly had my bath , got dressed and tried requesting a bolt ride all to no avail probably due to the unavailability of fuel and the heavy fall of rain.. I quickly glanced at my watch and noticed it was almost 6:40am and my interview was scheduled for 7:30am..That was when panic sets in. I immediately removed my shoe, picked up my documents (placed them in a plastic folder), kept my shirt inside a polythene bag, took some money and ran out in the rain wearing just my trouser pants and a singlet to get a cab from Maitama to the USA embassy

I nor kuku send.. Fortunately I found one at Panama street, jumped inside and got dressed in the vehicle. Devil na mumu.. Werey wan use rain take stop me .

I entered the embassy and I noticed a white lanky man was dishing out blue slips to everyone he interviewed . I silently prayed to GOD not to get to his counter. Fortunately, the lady at window 11 called out when it was my turn.

ME: Good morning Ma'am.
V.O: Good morning, how are you?.
ME: I am fine.
V.O: Pass me your passport and i-20.
V.O: What are you travelling to the usa For?
ME: I am travelling to the USA to pursue my master's degree in Business Adminstration at University of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

ME : I choosed University of Bridgeport, Connecticut because the university offered me an admission into Business Administration coupled with courses tailored towards my career aspirations. I will also be privileged to work with Professor Greg Kogan, whose research covers multiple disciplines such as economics and Business analytics. V.O: What is your post study plan?

I took a deep breath, smiled, thanked her and continued. ".. I intend to do a lateral career switch from my present role as a project manager to Bleep manager within the same company. This MBA program will enable me build competency to be able to function as a Bleep.

ME: Studying in the USA will expose me to research opportunities which can't be achieved here in Nigeria. Also it's a known fact that the USA remains the No 1 in the world when it comes to innovation, technology and most especially business.
V.O: Okay. Was just typing without looking at me. Eventually glanced at me and asked, " I can see you have some fundings, who will pay the deficit?
ME: My uncle will be the one paying half of it and I already have savings that would cover the rest of the expenses.
V.O : Everything seems good here. Types , types, types( my heart was beating profusely).
After a long wait, she gave me the white slip and muttered a whole lot of stuffs. I nor even listen. I quickly grabbed the slip before she changes her mind, thanked her and literally fled.

Everything I needed, I got from this thread. I painstakingly studied all the transcripts posted here and it was what I used to prepare for my interview.. Justwise, one love man... Next week, I will be having a Zoom meeting with the professor of the department I'm planning to apply to, and who I have asked to be my mentor and supervisor.

Before now, I have had a Zoom meeting with the school admissions rep. During the meeting, I asked him several questions and he provided in-depth answers to them.

Now, I really don't know what I will ask or discuss with this professor next week.

Before she agreed to speak with me, she said her department accepts only one student per intake and they don't do distance learning. When I told her that I'm looking at residency and that I'm really passionate about the field, she then gave me date for us to talk.

It's PhD and it's fully funded.

What should I be discussing with this professor? I don't want to be staring at her. I want to be lively and talk all through.

And as for the money in USD ITS $17k


I can actually still raise up to $25k to $30k due to the fact that my mom will add up for me but in my bank account today like $17k usd

AND CONSIDERING MY LAST 2 years GPA after calculating it on scale of 4.0(using WES) it’s 3.21 because if I’m to consider my GPA FOR MY WHOLE UNDERGRADUATE it’s really bad but I’ve seen more than 17schools that considers the last two years and also they have the course I want
Just want you people to guide me and let me know the steps to take to get admission and also to get full funding

Ans 1. what's your overall GPA from your attachment you need just 2.50
2. Most schools only consider you for funding after you have been admitted. NOTE FUNDING CAN BE GOTTEN FROM ANYWHERE NOT ONLY IN YOUR DEPARTMENT OR FACULTY eg you can work with the library, hostel, non-academic staff offices, etc


Although I have about 7m saved in my bank account for now in case of proof of funds issue
