Sports / Re: Enyeama's Error Cost Nigeria - Keshi by chinaman666(m): 3:42am On Jul 01, 2014
As a Chinese soccer fan, I was absolutely amazed by how well Enyeama played. If anything, he kept Nigeria in the game. The fact that Enyeama had to make so many saves was itself the result of a weak Nigerian backfield. The mistake that led to the first goal was simply the effect of Enyeama being worn down by so many French shots.

And for a coach to say that about his (perhaps his best) player, it's disgraceful.

Really? Can you elaborate on this?

Either way, AIDS is most common in Africa out of all the continents. You could never be too careful.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Ghanaian - Nkrumah Is Greater Than Mandela by chinaman666(m): 5:39pm On Dec 13, 2013
As a Chinese, I have been to South Africa recently only to find the country still dominated economically and technically by its white citizens and white expats. The Chinese, along with the black South Africans, were victims of apartheid, and I couldn't help but feel disappointed that following the beginning of black rule in SA, more redistribution wasn't done. I give props to Mandela for his struggle for equality, however the West celebrate him for his leniency for the former white oppressors.

I believe that leniency was excessive. Sure, they shouldn't be massacred. But their ill-gotten wealth must be redistributed to the land's original inhabitants! If China was under apartheid, and Mandela was Chinese and did in China what he actually had done in SA, there's no question that the Chinese would consider him a traitor who failed to bring the Chinese full justice.

No people should tolerate that their resources and their modes of production are solidly in the hands of outsiders, while their children lack the hope for a brighter future.

BBC and CNN are nothing but pure biased garbage. You'll never see anything postive about Africa or China from those two networks. I'd take RT and Al Jazeera over them any day.

Instead of feeling sympathy at a fellow Nigerian's hardship at a foreign land and the predicament he now finds himself after an unfortunate incident, most of the commenters are wishing him ill. SMH for humanity.

We are not supposed to love our enemies but instead we are to make our enemies our footstool.

I don't know about you, but if I had a footstool, I'd love it.

Prostitution services can only command the kind of prices they do BECAUSE prostitution is a scarce resource. If it is legalized, and if there is no more shame associated with prostitution, its cost will crash down dramatically.

Basic supply and demand.

Christianity makes no sense. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were punished for not completely committing genocide to their "enemies" as decreed by their god. In the New Testament, we're told to love our enemies and turn the other cheek.

The poor treatment of non-European immigrants by Italy is also to blame. The ugly intolerance of the average Italian has come to haunt them. Karma's a bi+ch.

nero69: I think the old fool in correct on this one...what will majoriyy of the locals engage in if you allow chinaman to start selling akara by the road side? Seven eleven is a multinational retail store that runs 24/7 services. In thailand, the government ordered them to stop selling alcholic bev from 11am till 2pm...then stop again from 12midnight till 11am. This is to enable the local shop do some marketing...so oga mugubay got this right. In most asian countries foreigners are not allowed to open provision stores.

If chinamen can sell akara cheaper and in better quality, I'm sure most Nigerians (except for akara vendors) would welcome this.
Politics / Re: Nigerians, Others To Close Businesses In Zimbabwe By January 2014 by chinaman666(m): 5:50pm On Nov 24, 2013
Haha, Nigerians are the Chinese of Africa. Anyway, there's an easy solution to this, marry Zimbabweans, so that it becomes Zimbabwean-owned but remains controlled/managed by the foreign spouse. With poverty so widespread in that country, anyone with money should be attractive to Zimbawean ladies.

CraigB:

It really is a crying shame. And it's not as if Africa does not produce skilled people. It does, but they would much rather leave to help developed nations further entrench their position atop the food chain.

Africa is not being robbed of its natural resources today. This is nothing that trade and regulation cannot fix (political will permitting). Africa robs itself because it allows corruption and the brain drain to take root. And then in defining its shortcomings, Africa assumes that its problems today are due to the colour of their skin. Well, perhaps that's how the problems started, but that's not how they have been maintained and aggravated. Self-reflection is avoided and problems are externalised. Someone else's success is also trivialised to the extent that it forces the loathed self-reflection.

It's been interesting to see Angola receive expats from Portugal - and Angola today is the third largest economy in Africa by GDP. And it continues to grow as an oil producer. I doubt that Angolans care about the race of the expats.

Attracting talent is the key. And the colour of the talent is irrelevant. Stûpid is the country that wants to turn talent away on the basis that it wants to be "wholly black". Developed countries do not turn African talent away, on the grounds that they want to be "wholly white".

I agree that South Africa does need to do more work. However, after 19 years, there are positive developments, albeit much slower in pace than desired. Missteps along the way, yes. However, I'd say slow steps in the right direction are better than quick steps in the wrong one.

By allowing foreign businesses and foreign talent in a developing country, the potential benefit would be to force indigenous firms and people to compete at a higher level as to meet the higher standards (improved efficiency, organization, professionalism).

However, this is assuming that the indigenous workers and firms are in a position to compete. For many developing countries, this has not been the case, and free market reforms failed to end poverty for the most part.

It is up to the government to protect and incubate the indigenous industries so that they can develop to a point of competitiveness. But it has to be a balance; without any outside competitive pressure, it would be naive to assume that local industries would improve efficiency on its own.

My own take on Nigeria (could be totally wrong, only from what I perceived) is that the government here impose an all-or-nothing approach to protectionism.

The government either protects the industry completely from outside competitive pressure, thus forming a monopoly, for example import restrictions (e.g. pasta or cement) or exclusive import restrictions (e.g. refined gasoline), or allows the Western firms to have its way with no indigenous competition now or in the forseeable future (e.g. oil drilling/exploration).

CraigB:

I agree with you 100%. In fact, this has been one of my favourite areas of study for years.

That race is a social construct is buttressed by the example of how "black" is defined in the US vs how it is defined in SA.

The US had the "one-drop" rule. SA had the exact opposite - the rule of thumb or classification by observation.

Both these opposing racial classification systems worked for the societies that created them - and they had no scientific basis. The existence of "race" as we define it cannot be scientifically proven.

It was not uncommon during apartheid South Africa for siblings to be classified under different races, based on how they looked. One coloured and the other, black, for example.

People could even switch between races if the classifying officer allowed it. Not only that, they could be exempted from being classified as "black", for example. Educated blacks in apartheid South Africa could apply for exemption, so that they aren't classified as black for the purposes of certain legislation.

In the US, the exact opposite occurred. Someone who may otherwise look white would be deemed black because they have black parentage or lineage somewhere. Looks were irrelevant (in contrast to South Africa).

These classification systems are totally arbitrary.

The problem is that the formerly oppressed and colonised Africans have bought into this classification system and they have been mentally wounded by it. This was, after all the aim of colonisation. So people speak of "black africa" today. But successful Europe has all sorts of "black" people contributing there. It's been like that for centuries. From the time Timbuktu was the main academic authority in the then world to now. No one can tell me that the UK is entirely white, or the US, or France or, or, or...

Why should Africa be?

These are simply people. And South Africa is on to something.

Colonisation has won, so far. The views expressed in this thread and many others are clear evidence of that.

It's a shame that the legacies of colonialism (not only in Africa, but also in Asia and Latin America) exist today not only in the form of economic inequalities, but worse, in the mind of the victims of colonialism. An inferiority complex is still prevalent in much of the non-Western world, but more and more people are waking up to it, as they're participating more in the economy and becoming more educated.

I'm not saying that places like Sandton should be linquidated to help the poor South Africans. Instead, they should be preserved as the business hubs that they are. However, South Africa must do a better job of redistributing its wealth so that the children of the poor can have a chance at a quality education and a chance for professional employment.

the warrior72: undecided Is this a caucasian state or what?, where are the blacks?

Why are people so fixated on race? Race does not exist scientifically or biologically. It is a social construct. We are all the human race. People can move and work anywhere in the world as long as they have a valid visa.

I'm Chinese, lived in the US, proud to speak Chinese everywhere... Anyway, I just want to know if this is mainly a problem that affect Igbos (since most of the stories here concern this group) or do other ethnic groups (especially Yorubas) feel the same shame towards their mother tongue? I would ask my Nigerian colleagues if this question weren't so sensitive and potentially offensive. Thanks.

If you're in Texas, you've obviously never spent time in Austin. Hipsters and yuppies dominate this place. They don't dress baggy.

Also, rednecks and ghetto dwellers can't really set the trend anywhere. What they choose to wear is irrelevant.

Chinese and Nigerians are very similar. Both groups are hustling in every country on Earth. And both groups are often hated by the people of the countries that they settle in.

I guess it's because of this understanding that Chinese don't feel much hate in Nigeria and Nigerians don't feel much hate in China.

As Chinese, I must emphasize: This is Hong Kong, not mainland China. The culture there is somewhat different than that of most of China. I wouldn't expect this to be possible on the mainland.

But regardless, this guy is a disgrace to Chinese men and to men everywhere. How can a man kneel and cry like a baby while his gf yanks him by the hair and slaps around in public? She must have some hidden leverage on him. She's ugly as fnck too.

All those white Europeans on Africa's richest list make it clear that colonialism has never left this continent. If it has, those who made their fortune from the legacy of colonialism wouldn't've been able to keep their ill-begotten wealth.
