In fact you are right, but those CD Sellers are concentrated somewhere and aren't all over the place like churches. Sometimes they play interesting "secular" music while churches force you to listen to their service. grin

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: The Fall Of Chelsea by Christino(m): 6:32pm On Dec 29, 2006
@ Abdblues,

Don't forget Roman took over very close to the end of the summer, in fact, Zola had left before the takeover was announced and his contract was not renewed. Ranieri had the cash but the players were not available. See how long it took chelsea to get Shevy, they still can't get Gerrard till date! It's not just about the money but the availability of players. Shortly after the world cup, what do you expect? Transfers here and there and that's what happened. At the end of the day, i believe most of the major players that came in came from the Premiership itself, like Joe Cole, Duff, Veron, Glen and so on. Some first teamers remained, some were benched because it was too sudden, and don't forget, Ranieri has a good history in the Spanish league too. He's not bad at all.

I believe if he was allowed to continue something could have happened. If another coach comes in after Jose, you'll be surprised he would be coming to refine Gold and not mine, because Jose already has the major players on ground. Even at that, Jose is yet to win the Champs league which he did with Porto, a team very low in monetary value of players to Chelsea. His attacking force back then included McCarthy (now with Blackburn) imagine if he had Drogba and Shevy then?

If you have more quality players, the result is "SELECTION HEADACHE" and that's what Roman has done to Mourinho and any coach coming in. If a player is injured, there's a backup player very few premiership players can really equal. If i say no Roman no premiership title and you think i'm lying, why has Chelsea refused to win the league since the premiership, is it because Mourinho's the messiah, or do you think if Scolari comes he won't do more? Okay maybe it's not only the money that has brought the cups but what's been the driving force? First year second, second year first, isnt' that good? Just like what happened in Barca when Ronaldinho and Rijkaard arrived. He booted out fellow dutchmen  loads and loads of stars arrived, in came Deco, Giuly, and later on Eto'o, and in the first year, they came very close to winning the title, the following year they won it and the rest is history, they still got Larsson later on (meanwhile Saviola was still available and his goal scoring record for them pretty impressive too, yet they sent him on loan to Monaco at a time,  . .) They did not stop there this season, despite winning the League and Champs league they still tried to get Henry and finally settled for Gudjohnsen, Thuram and Zambrotta.

Although chelsea had some flops in Kezman and co that were bought during Ranieri's time, but that's not to say Mourinho didn't have his share of flops in DelHorno & co.

Truth is the money is as good as useless if you can't get the players you want at the right time. That was the problem with Ranieri. If Big Sam had a quarter of that money you know what'd become of Bolton today? grin When there's good money and a good manager and available players, you get results. It's like Coaching Brazil grin

@ Jay

Thanks for opening this thread, hope you keep it alive. all the 52 Club Chairmen met and have decided to declare an automatic 3-0 loss to home clubs who oppose match officials. the debate now is, can't away fans team up with some home indigenes to spark riots and as a result make divert the rule in their favour?

Secondly the NFL has secured a 700million naira sponsorship deal from Globacom (formerly 70 million) they say it's the biggest league sponsorship in the whole of Africa, that's a good one if the money is utilized. We hope to see our league ressurect someday, i guess we are just starting.

Ocean Boys won the league the last time to the detriment of Enyimba, 3Sc, Dolphin, Kwara United, Rangers among other in-form clubs. This is definitely an improvement and a warning to clubs in the habit of selling, selling and selling. Enyimba's fall began when they sold tireless beninoise midfielder Muri Ogunbiyi to a club in Egypt. It's so sad, i understand Frimpong is in another top club too. God dey sha.

@ Topic,

i'm the type who doesn't close my eyes when I pray and who also does not open his mouth. I don't like to clap and I don't like to dance. As a matter of fact the only type of churches that fit in are:

The Scientific Church of Christ and THe Seventh Day Adventists. (Adventists don't use drum set, strictly string instruments - no clapping, no dancing wotsoeva) The longest prayer session I ever witnessed in an Adventist Church lasted 10 minutes. (I've not been to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, neither have I been to the Assumpion or the Mormons but i'll do that sometime in 2007, I like to see things for myself! cheesy)

The fact that most churches don't feel comfortable until they have the best sound system operating "OUTSIDE" of the church is a huge disgrace. Since churches now register with the Federal Government as Companies, they should be compelled to install Sound Proof systems as well. I don't know much about mosques, but whenever they do their vigil or Asalatu, it's equally hell, i'm sure they inherited that from their Christian Brothers. cheesy

I stay in an Area where you have a Church for every 5 gates, Friday nights and Sunday Mornings are Off days for me. I can't sleep, I can't read, I cant even watch TV. I'm thinking of getting a 7,000 Watts subwoofer so I can listen to something personal or else, i'll have to listen to some kind of music/program I rarely dream of.

I'm not discriminating here, hey, if i attend your church and don't dance or sing, you have every right to walk me out cheesy
You'll have to tell me where Jesus/David danced in the church in the bible. Now we eat, and do all sorts of things in the premises, dotcom xtians sef? The Church is incomplete without joyful noises unto the Lord, Oga o.

Before you go any further, get your facts right. As bleak as it may seam to your dull brain, Craig David has sold more than MOST rappers worldwide(naturally RnB sells more than Rap) and how many awards did he win in UK on his debut album? To argue about an artiste from the UK, you'd be a daft punk to say Craig David is not it, in fact you lost it, please go back to Elementary and learn the basics. @ ROFLMAO and Others.

Do you guys know TaTu? Do you know Fort Minor, Do you really know Fat Joe and Big Pun like you claim to do? Do you know Shakira, Frankie J, Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Amerie, among other foreigners who've made it in hip hop?

Okay, do you know Sauce kid and Eldee? Do you know mode 9, Tuface, P-Square?

Do you know Femi Kuti, Omoluther, Lagbaja, Kaysha, Koffi Olomide, Awilo Logomba?

Seal did not leave the country until he was more than 12. Check the scars on his face, he used to have a yoruba tribal mark. the name seal is an acronym of his names.

I'll leave you to the research you claim to do. Please go to www.wikipedia.org and do a search on each of these artistes maybe you can learn a thing or two, i won't do that for you.

and to those claiming we should quit the westerners' ways, i bet you've stopped wearing jeans, suits and boots, go back to wrapper, kembe, and salubata so you can be very African, or we can't dress better than westerners too?
grin

@ All who think we can't do it better than the westerners

Who knows Celine Dion's origin? Why's the Rnb and Hip Hop scene dominated by blacks? That means if a Nigerian leaves the country at 10 and goes there he can make it, or if he steps foot there and has the right connection, he can as well make it. I remember Craig David going to the west and he made it big time, despite being British. There's still discrimination between British and Americans. Check out the grammy awards and MOBO awards. That's why it's hard for people like Lemar, Dizzie Rascal, Jamelia and other British peeps to gain grounds in Yankee. Even Craig David had to change base totally for him to gain grounds in the Yankee, yet he is a king in the UK, he struggled in his second and third albums released in the US.
Besides, how do you sell Ice in Iceland? - Packaging!
Do you watch Trace TV? All these french guys doing their thang. At least you Know Matt - Don la peau? This dude sold like fire worldwide even though he was french! Nigerian music may not be popular due to popularity, definitely not quality, and if you say recording quality, then i've heard worse recordings from abroad too.

I don't need to start going into details, but if you've been on NL for a while, and you visit the Music Thread frequently, then you should know you have a wrong contender here, you are the ones who need to get facts before jumping into conclusion.

Bottomline: It's difficult to make name in America, music-wise, if you are not based there.
But to say that we can't do it better than the westerners is something i'll forever disagree, cos peeps like Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe have defeated these guys in their fields. This igbo guy in Systems Engineering also and a host of other great Nigerians. The human mind is like blotting paper. Dedication, determination and time is the basis of success and I don't see any big deal in what the Americans do, i've seen equally, if not better works of Art by Nigerians lately and I don't respect anyone saying we can't do it. What do they do? SIng and send the heavens open?

Even talk of Opera, Have you ever attended the concerts of The Apostolic Faith? But for Country music and Rock, What part of the Western or European Music have we not done well in, is it Jazz? Rap or RnB? Just a little more publicity and hype and we got everyone clamoring for us.

I quote Wyclef here: "I don't like the way you refer to your artistes as local artistes, they can stand anywhere in the world and their works speak volume". Someone please tell me, what's music in 50's "Candy Shop" grin

The following weeks, we heard Collabos from Wyclef and some Nigerian Artistes as well as Beenie Man with Tuface. What more conviction do you guys need.

If you were not proud of Nigerian Music, this is the right time for you to be, cos while you are in this pitiable state of Ignorance, our Music industry will surpass you and send you back to the stone age. grin

@ Loverb

The question was is the Naija music popular among Africans in general and I said YES! what part of d question did i miss?

@ Ndipe
Exactly, emulate the westerners, like we emulated Ragga, Makossa, Jazz and what have you. The Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans, Latinos, West Indies, Britons and Asians also emulate them till date and they are making it big time, so why not us? Nothing wrong.

Everyone can't sing trad. We still have people like Lagbaja, Sunny, and a host of Fuji and Juju guys raking in millions on their tours and are widely accepted, ain't no wrong in this grin

Majek Fashek and Ras Kimono made names for themselves singing Ragga (or is Raggae African?). Alex O was obviously copying the westerners. Funmi Adams, Mike Okri and those early artistes were very original and they reaped the dividends, so we can't expect all our artistes to embrace the local culture when already, in words and in deeds we are acting like the Americans left, right and centre. "Even the voting machines have George bush as the winner by default regardless of the vote ratio grin"

Meanwhile have you seen "Proud to be African" by Wyclef, Tuface, Faze, Sound Sultan very nice one. And have you seen Sound SUltan's Motherland? Ol boy. . . you are missing many many o.

@ Ndipe,

In tha part of the world where you are, Naija music isnt recognized, maybe you wouldn't say the same if you were in Brixton or Peckham.

Meanwhile naija music is already popular thruought africa, be it gospel, afrobeat or hip hop. You may think we can't do hip hop better than the americans, but i seriously doubt that statement, cos i've seen africans do it better than them. I can cite lemar Obika, Seal, The lighthouse Family, Sade Adu and even multi talented Lagbaja and Weird MC. In fact, there was a Methodman track that was extremely similar to trybesmen's (i've forgotten the name of the track but it goes like beremole (common) oya baraje (common). . .) and no doubt, his was released like a couple of months after theirs.

Nollywood may be backward in concept but our music industry has grown in leaps and bounds. Have you seen the video clips of Olufunmi, Get squared, Ijoya, No be God, Cry, Chinwe Ike, and most recently Why me among others? in fact we hardly see wach music videos on screen anymore and all the music channels aint' complete without nigerians, from MTV base to Channel O. Even on Sound city and Nigezie, you hardly see foreign music anymore. At the last awards/nominations in S/A, Nigerian sweeped almost all the titles. From Modenine grabbing 3 to Weird MC and co.

Man, Naija has grown in the Music industry, I'm really surprised @ our hip hop. Even Francis Dike (F-Six) made it to the last 6 of the BBC Next big thing award with a stunning rap track (eyes of the needle) and I mean it, this guy was better than 85% of the so-called commercial rappers you have over there. grin

@ Rof-Lmao

Akon narrowly played in the NBA but chose his musical career (just like Simon Webbe turned down west ham for Blue) and has been in the US since God knows when? His intonation shouldn't be a deterrent. Peeps like Sean Paul and Wyclef do represent their countries well. Do you know that Big Pun and Fat Joe are not Americans at all yet they do it like the Americans. Wyclef has made more money than most artistes out there in Yankee, yet not a yankee himself, so I don't think Nigerians embracing the western culture of hip hop is a plus. Blacks are good at mimicing. We have done it in sports, education and what have you and blacks are the brains behind R n B and where did they come from? Africa!

I remember Rock with Rasheeda feat Akon as far back as the mid 90's or thereabout (can u imagine?) How can you say Akon was 100% African sef, can you even boast of 10% african for him. Okay he wore the senegalese band in his video clips grin

I like the nice list of great africans you have up there, but even Lagbaja has embraced the western culture, but with an african blend anyway. It's innovative, if you want to catch the attention of today's youths, you are definitely on your own if you sing Apala. We all dress like the westerners, even Nollywood copies the westerners and it's stars try to speak the phoney American Ascent. Why not the music itself? Almost all the homies on the street of lag have one ear pierced - what about that? and parents are still begging their daughters to stop wearing skimpy skimps. . . where dat come from man?

Just as makossa spilled heads here, Tetuila's My car did much damage across west africa and Tuface's African Queen was the killer. Now it's P-Square and D'banj (you wan try choreography?)

Ndipe, please come home for xmas/new year so you can save me 1000 lines of boring posts grin grin cheesy

As for the over 200 million pounds lost in hungry transfers, I'm afraid they can't recuperate in 7 years, even if Chelsea wins the league and champions league for 5 years non stop grin because they have other things to deal with, like Ballack's wages and Shevy's League and Champs league bonuses grin
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Manchester United Fan thread: Forever Reds by Christino(m): 12:31am On Dec 28, 2006
@ Justk

I can't vouch for SWF though he seems to be coming up gradually but for Ballack and Shevy who have just arrived and are settling down, it's too early to judge. I'm surpised Kuyt, Berbatov and Martins have settled so fast but for these two Merceneries, i don't think there's any player in their class in the league at present and it's dangerous to write them off at half season. They are match winners and can prove you wrong to the highest extent anyday.

Just a whisper here: in case you don't know, Ballack is my second all time greatest player, Rivaldo is number one. Next to them is Gerrard.

Meanwhile, what happened to Diego Forlan and Eric Djemba - Djemba forgotten so soon? Whatever happened to Juan Sebastian Veron too. grin
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Manchester United Fan thread: Forever Reds by Christino(m): 12:21am On Dec 28, 2006
I don't think it' Jose who's impatient, i guess it's Roman who needs to see results immediately. Ranieri was shown the door immediately after the first season despite coming second their highest Premiership position.

It's unfortunate, Chelsea don't have the patience to wait for youngsters, even Carlton Cole had to leave. I dunno what will become of Mikel even though Jose tried to make him feel at home. They need mercenaries, tested and proven people. They wouldn't buy clichy or micah richards, they settled for Del Horno (best leftback in spain that year) and sacked him when he refused to play up to expectation, and was replaced By Ashly cole, they would have been happier with Roberto Carlos though.

Back in Porto, I remember this youngster Carlos Alberto, a 19 year old regular and was a favorite of Mourinho's that's when he's not been pressed for results, but now that Roman wants to see the silverwares, upcoming players are not needed, even if young players are coming in, i don't think greenhorns will be permitted, save some young players who've played well in some other clubs.

@ DOnz
Sir,
Fergie won't get any credit till he wins the tourney.Man U is a great team, but you know Chelsea has a replacement for almost every player (save Gallas, cos now theres no cover for Terry and Cech/Cudiccini, 6 goals conceded in 3 games). When the angel of injury visits the premiership clubs, like in Newcastle, who'd be d most affected? Besides i don't think Saha is a low key signing, he's well known in the Nationwide league where he did wonders with Luis Boa Morte and in the premiership too, i guess he was on about 16 goals before Man-U bought him - A wise buy. It's not that Jose doesn't know what he wants, he wants the best person in each department.Best keeper, best this best that, and so on and he has the authority to "rob the bank". grin Mourinho has done it elsewhere, need he learn more? May be.

I don't think united's team was built around RVN. Man U did the treble even before he came in.Obviously, Man-U isn't missing him. See their goal tally this season already. He didn't even take them to the Champions league final, maybe a few EPL silverware and others, that's all, and now this season, Fergie's got his boys back and all of a sudden, Man U are the team to beat.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Manchester United Fan thread: Forever Reds by Christino(m): 11:32pm On Dec 27, 2006
No the youth system has very young players, averagely 17. Mikel is obviously not in the youth team, the youth team is lower than the reserve team, you never find them on the line up, they go on loan in other clubs when they are mature enough, you see them in the early stages of the carling cup. To the best of my knowledge, Arsenal has the best youth team around, at least we know of a lot of them, hoping to beat man-u's collection of youthful legends in Scholes, giggs, neville, beckham and co. Now we know of Hoyte, Senderos, Fabregas, Clichy, . . . and the likes of Sidwell, stokes and co (remember the highest goal scorer in the scottish league at present is an Arsenal youth on loan @ falkirk)

With chelsea's billions, most talented youths will run to chelsea. I believe they've been raiding Asec Mimosa's youth academy because i remember Jose and Roman saw the Cameroun Vs Ivoire match live. Just speculating, nvm.

@ JustKunmi,

You forgot to highlight the most important part of the report. . .

"Abramovich plans to curb Blues spending
Roman Abramovich claims Chelsea's spending in the transfer market will soon be reduced as he expects investment in the club's academy to start bearing fruit.

Since the Russian's £140million takeover of the Stamford Bridge club in 2003 the Blues have won two Premiership titles thanks largely to their new-found financial muscle.

But Abramovich believes the expected results of significant investment in the club's youth system will reduce the need to speculate so lavishly in the transfer market. "
