Nairaland / General / Re: Research Reveals That Being In A Bad Mood Can Improve Your Brain’s Productivity by chuckcy(m): 8:23pm On Jul 18, 2018 |
EntertainingYou: Being in an bad mood can enable certain individuals to think all the more proficiently as far as their capacity to center consideration, oversee time and organize undertakings, as per new research.
New research found that being in a bad mood can help some people’s executive functioning, such as their ability to focus attention, manage time and prioritize tasks. The same study found that a good mood has a negative effect on it in some cases.
Tara McAuley, a psychology professor at the University of Waterloo, and Martyn S. Gabel, a PhD candidate, explored whether our emotional reactivity shaped how mood influences the kinds of thinking skills we need to navigate the demands and stresses of day-to-day life. Emotional reactivity refers to the sensitivity, intensity and duration of our emotional responses associated with our mood.
“Our results show that there are some people for whom a bad mood may actually hone the kind of thinking skills that are important for everyday life,” said McAuley.
The high-reactive individuals – people who have rapid, intense, and enduring emotional responses – performed better on executive function tasks when experiencing a bad mood. Low-reactive individuals showed the opposite effect, with bad mood associated with worse executive functioning.
This pattern of results supports the view that a bad mood may help with some executive skills – but only for people who are more emotionally reactive.
“People shouldn’t interpret the results as saying it’s fine to fly off the handle or overreact, or to be grouchy,” said McAuley. “We know that emotional reactivity differs from person to person starting at a very early age and that these individual differences have implications for mental health later in development.”
Further research is needed to explain the relationship, but some studies suggest that high-reactive people are more accustomed to experiencing negative emotions. As such, bad moods may be less distracting for them compared with lower-reactive people. The study included 95 participants, each of whom completed nine distinct tasks and questionnaires that measure the interplay of mood, emotional reactivity and various working memory and analytic challenges.

Crime / Re: 2 Nigerians In Vietnam Jailed For 28 Years Over Dating Scam Of About $130,000 by chuckcy(m): 6:06pm On Jul 18, 2018 |
FlirtyKaren: Two Nigerians in Vietnam have been sentenced to 16 and 12 years in prison duping Vietnamese women they befriended online of about $130,000.
In the judgment delivered on Monday, July 16, Ihugba Augustine Chinonso, 32, was sentenced to 16 years in prison while Onu Chinonso Peter, 33, got 12 years for "appropriating property through swindling."
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court has also sentenced six of their Vietnamese accomplices to between eight and 20 years in jail on the same charges and for "forging seals and documents of agencies or organizations."
In addition to the jail sentences, the defendants were required to return all the swindled money to their victims.
According to the indictment, the Nigerian men set up fake accounts on social networks, befriended Vietnamese women and promised to send them cash and expensive gifts.
Their Vietnamese accomplices then pretended to be employees from delivery companies, customs officers or police officers and demanded that the women transfer delivery fees, customs fees or fines to their bank accounts.
After each successful scam, the Vietnamese accomplices got to keep 15-25 percent of the money, while the rest was sent to Chinonso.
The gang was busted after one of their victims, Chau, reported her case to the police in February 2016.
Chau said she was befriended by a foreigner claiming to be British on Facebook in January. The man promised to send her $100,000 in cash and other expensive gifts a month later.
In early February, a woman claiming to be from a delivery company called Chau, asking her to pay a $1,200 delivery fee and a VND80 million ($3,500) customs fee for a gift from overseas, which she paid. The woman then claimed she had not received the money and had Chau send her another VND112 million.
When a man claiming to be an officer from Hanoi's economic police told her to pay a VND200 million fine as her package contained a large amount of cash, Chau became suspicious and approached the municipal police for help.
The police quickly identified and arrested the fake police officer and his wife.
Following further investigations, police uncovered the entire gang and concluded that in addition to Chau, they had also scammed another 10 women out of nearly VND3 billion ($130,000).
At the trial on Monday, most of the defendants admitted to their crimes. Chinonso, however, claimed his confession as obtained under torture. The court dismissed the claim.

Business / Re: Jeff Bezos Is Now The Richest Man In The World With $143B by chuckcy(m): 10:55am On Jul 17, 2018 |
Ekiti360: Jeff Bezos’s wealth has reached an incredible new milestone.
As of Tuesday, according to a Forbes estimate, the Amazon founder and CEO has a net worth of $143.1 billion—making him at least $50 billion richer than any other person on Earth.
Bezos became the world’s richest man last summer, when his net worth (then around $90 billion) surpassed that of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Gates, who has given much of his fortune to philanthropic efforts, now has a net worth of about $93.3 billion, Forbes reports.
Like many of the world’s richest people, Jeff Bezos’s net worth is tied directly to his company’s performance in the stock market. Bezos owns roughly 16% of Amazon, and Amazon stock has been soaring. The price of a single share of Amazon is now selling for over $1,700, up from $1,000 as recently as last October.
On Monday, Amazon stock popped roughly 2%, boosting Jeff Bezos’s net worth by another $2.24 billion. All signs indicate that shoppers will go crazy for Amazon Prime Day 2018, the annual blockbuster online sales event. When that happens, investors will probably find new reason to buy more Amazon stock — nudging Jeff Bezos’s net worth even higher.
Amazon Prime Day 2018 is set to stretch out over 36 hours starting on the afternoon of Monday, July 16, and continuing through Tuesday, July 17.
Amazon says that Amazon Prime Day 2018 sales will be bigger than ever, with more than a million deals available worldwide. Amazon Prime Day has been a monster success for Amazon since its inception in 2015, generating huge online sales and spikes in Prime subscriptions alike.
In order to take advantage of Amazon Prime Day deals, you must be a member of Amazon Prime, the subscription program that includes free two-day shipping on most Amazon purchases, plus perks like unlimited video streaming of Prime content.
This year, as Amazon Prime Day 2018 approaches, the cost of Prime is higher than it’s been in the past. Amazon increased the price of monthly Prime subscriptions back in January, from $10.99 to $12.99, and in April the company announced annual Prime membership prices would rise from $99 to $119. (There’s still a free 30-day trial period for new members.)
Amazon says that there are now more than 100 million paid Prime members worldwide, and Amazon Prime Day is always correlated with an increase in memberships. Beyond the hefty revenues generated strictly from Prime membership costs, the big reason Amazon pushes online shoppers to become Prime subscribers is that people tend to buy way more stuff on Amazon after they’ve become Prime members, studies show. Take that as a warning.

AnanseK: “THE LESSONS FROM EKITI AND AYO FAYOSE.
By Mr Abasifreke Idiong
If there are any lessons I would like to share with you from the long drawn melodrama in Ekiti that culminated in victory for Dr Fayemi of the APC, today, one of them is the fact that majority of Nigerian voters are not on Facebook and twitter and so don't even read your media propaganda and hate campaign!
Second, there is always a limit to brashness and political brigandage!
Third, many Nigerians may be hungry, but stomach infrastructure isn't the solution, by and by. Empowerment is.
In many ways, Ekiti embodies a litmus test, a harbinger for what the nearest future holds for elections in Nigeria.
I hold no sympathy for Fayose. He shot himself in the foot. I can only wish that his coterie of admirers and cheerleaders help him serve his imminent sentence when the time comes, for for every action there must be a reaction. His failure to install his stooge of a deputy will come with far-reaching ramifications. Dire consequences. And for him, it's about when, and not if!
PMB may be no saint, but that office demands some esteem.
Fayose bought media space in several Nigerian mainstream newspapers saying PMB will die and you clapped, cheering him on.
He told anyone who cared to listen PMB wear pampers, and you popped champagne!
He generated a fake report about PMB alleged prostrate cancer from ABU teaching hospital, and you went all bonkers.
He boldly wishes PMB death while in hospital in London. He said he is in possession of the pictures, and you claimed to have had same sent to your device!
He called the wife of the president a looter, and dared her to travel to America. She did, and you smarted back in amazement.
He insulted the president, calling him names, incompetent and the worst thing to happen to Nigeria and you concurred.
He refused to welcome Mr President to the Ekiti he built, but chose to welcome a mere envoy, and you asked the barman for more bottles.
He mounted road blocks on the stretch of road which would have been shorter for PMB to access the campaign ground, and you said the President has met his match!
He chose to play the clown just to spite Mr President. And you drummed.
No day passed without the man pouring his venom on the exalted office of the President. Yet PMB never answered him, privately or in public. Civility!
In case you never knew, Mr Fayose is today a goner, a gone man. But before natural justice catches up with him, I feel duty-bound to remind him that PMB is not dead, to the glory of God!
His fate now will now be decided by this man he wished evil.
Get ready, Sir, cos the chicken has come home to roost!” bros, its seems u re beginning to build a career, but not this way, u need to b guarded probably |
