TINUBU ONLY INTERESTED IN OUR OIL MONEY! How Tinubu Gave S’West Votes to Jonathan19 Apr 2011 Last Saturday's presidential election is generating stern controversies in the rank of the progressives as the Congress for Progressive Change presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) has blamed former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu for selling South-West to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Buhari Monday spoke with THISDAY through his spokesperson, Comrade Yinka Odumakin on phone, alleging that Tinubu, who is the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) struck a deal with President Jonathan to deliver all the South Western States to the ruling PDP in the last presidential election. The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) however dismissed the allegation of “playing a role, overtly or covertly to aid the putative victory of the PDP in last Saturday's presidential election, despite the insinuation to that effect”. Buhari did not disclose details of the deal, which he said the ACN national leader struck with President Jonathan less than one week before the conduct of the 2011 presidential election. But a CPC chieftain, who does not want his name mentioned, said Tinubu pushed for two most strategic appointments in the Federal Executive Council. According to the chieftain, Tinubu pushed to nominate candidate for Offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Petroleum Resources. He also opted to nominate ministers in other states of the South West while demanding that President Jonathan should put a stop to all investigations against him. Buhari asked Tinubu “to stop hiding under false excuses after striking deal with President Jonathan. Tinubu should leave me alone. He has made deal with President Jonathan and delivered. He even lost in his ward to PDP” in a contest he said should have given birth to new Nigeria”. Buhari described the alleged deal between President Jonathan and Tinubu as a typical replica of what Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders did in 2003 when the South West “was sold to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The South West leaders are chipping the blame on Late Chief Abraham Adesanya who cannot respond in his grave. “I can act authoritatively that he sealed the deal with President Jonathan, after which he called a meeting of controlling leaders of the ACN to make them buy into the deal Tinubu struck with President Jonathan,” Buhari said. However, Buhari commended Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola for rejecting Tinubu’s proposition that the South Western progressives should mobilise for President Jonathan in the presidential election alone. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/buhari-how-tinubu-gave-s-west-votes-to-jonathan/89907/ |

Senate Presidency: South East, South South join forces •Goje, Saraki, battle Mark By Sunny Igboanugo and Adetutu Folasade-Koyi, Abuja Every zone is throwing its hat into the ring for the office of Senate President in the gritty scramble for the title of number three citizen after the President and Vice President. Those not running are campaigning for their candidates, with old Senators backing Senate President David Mark (North Central), and new ones – who have not even been sworn in yet – going for Senators-elect Danjuma Goje and Bukola Saraki. Goje is currently Gombe State Governor, and Saraki is Kwara Governor. They will switch to the Senate when their terms expire on May 29. On the other hand, the South East and South South have joined forces. As each contestant clings to bases and allies, the South East has found some in the neighbouring South South for the position to return to the zone, which held it in the eight years of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidency. The North East entered into the fray with a demand after a meeting at the weekend that the post be zoned to it in order to troubleshoot the restiveness that erupted after the Presidential election. The North Central is, however, flaunting the alleged promise made to the zone to retain the job in exchange for its support for the bid by the South South to pick the Presidency. It was learnt that the collaboration between the South East and South South is based on collective interest. A source confirmed that two meetings have been held by the two zones on how to get the position back to the South East in a new-found fellowship, which became pronounced in the run up to the vote on April 16 that produced Goodluck Jonathan as President. Under the arrangement in which Jonathan received massive support from the South East, the zone resolved not to present a Presidential candidate for the first time in the history of the country, so as to get the maximum benefits. Jonathan got the most votes from the two zones, which made up the Eastern Region splintered into various states by military regimes. The source said the two zones want to firm up a common position before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where the battle will be fought. Some expressed surprise that the other zones are bidding for the Senate Presidency when it is obvious that the return of the Villa to the South means that the Senate Presidency would follow suit, as was in the case during the Obasanjo years. Said the source: “We don’t really understand why the North should be interested in the position when it has produced the Vice President. The PDP has a tradition of sharing these positions. “When Obasanjo was President the Senate President went to the South East. Nobody disturbed the arrangement despite the fact that the zone eventually produced five Senate Presidents. Nothing has changed now that Aso Rock has reverted to the South. “The PDP arrangement is in such a way that if the North presents the President, the Vice President naturally goes to the South, while the Senate President, the number three, goes to the North again, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives comes to the South. The two Deputies in the Senate and the House take a cue in that order. “That is the way it has been. Obasanjo maintained it and Yar’Adua maintained it. “The South East has paid its dues in this exercise. This is not the time to treat the zone as they have done in the National Chairmanship of the PDP, which has been denied the zone for several months.” Regardless, Goje (North East) has begun moves to snatch the Senate Presidency from Mark. He has convened a meeting with his colleagues from the zone. All PDP Senators from the zone are first timers. Immediately after the National Assembly (NASS) ballot on April 9, Saraki (North Central) sent text messages to other new Senators soliciting their support for him. But the North East is said to be in favourable contention, even though the North Central is not relenting in retaining the position it has occupied since 2007. Goje met with Senators-elect from the North East last Thursday where he urged them to articulate a common position. The zone has also reached out to the PDP apparatchik, telling it to concede the Senate Presidency to it for two reasons: Placate the zone as done to the South West over the June 12 debacle and the need to strengthen the PDP in the North East. The South West was given the Presidency in compensation for the annulment of the election of Moshood Abiola on June 12, 1993. The North East is arguing that it too should be allowed to get the Senate Presdiency since former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is from the zone, lost the PDP Presidential ticket to Goodluck Jonathan. The meeting also reasoned that conceding the Senate Presidency to the North East would help “cement unity and stabilise the PDP for future polls in the zone.” All the six returning Senators from the North Central have not openly expressed interest in the post, and Mark is canvassing their support for him to retain it. However, a ranking Senator from the North faulted Mark’s ambition, saying “I am all for equity in the sharing of positions in the Parliament. “If the South East is allowed to produce the Speaker, then it would be selfishness on the part of the North Central to insist that Mark should continue. We have to be sensitive at this time. It would not augur well for the top three positions to be held by Christians. “I am all for a Muslim-Christian ticket in the Senate.” http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=33101 |

ekt_bear:Dont know if you got the memo, but the SE is not going for senate presidency;instead, they are going for Speaker of Reps and are favored highly to get it. NE & NC quarreling is a good thing. It makes bad blood in the north and makes NC seem more like southerners now with all that has aspired. The NE is applying hard pressure on Mark and putting religious sentiment into it because Mark is a christian so that may knock mark off at the end. Saraki's definitely not going to get it for obvious reasons. |
N-East battles Mark for Senate Presidency On May 3, 2011 · · In Nigeria In Transition By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor, Tony Edike & Inalegwu Shaibu LAGOS – The battle for the presidency of the seventh Senate is shifting into a higher gear with members of the outgoing sixth Senate resuming their final days of sitting today. While a significant proportion of the 27 returning Senators are canvassing retention of the status quo, they are increasingly being opposed by new Senators mostly from the North-East contending for the prime position on the basis of geo-political equity. Meanwhile, there were reports yesterday of pressures on Senator David Mark to bow out handsomely from the race after a successful four-year stint for the purpose of upholding religious and ethnic balancing. That report was immediately dismissed by sources in the Mark camp which is already sensitising fresh and returning Senators for support. Mark is in pole position within the Senate and also reportedly in favour with the presidency on account of his past efforts in upholding the polity during the trying days of the Jonathan presidency. S-East demands 2 major positions Meanwhile, the South-East caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in both chambers of the National Assembly has asked the party’s leadership to reserve two major positions, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Deputy Senate Presidency for the zone under the new power sharing formula within the ruling party. The caucus said it was totally opposed to the ongoing plans to zone the position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the South-East in order to retain the Speakership of the House of Representatives in South-West. Opposition from N-Central and N-East The opposition to Mark for the office of Senate President, Vanguard gathered, is essentially a two-fanged operation from within his North-Central zone and from the North-East zone. Senator-elect Adamu Abdullahi, the immediate past Governor of Nasarawa State, has been reportedly touted as being interested for the position. He had, however, prior to his election in an interview with Vanguard affirmed that he would not contend with Senator Mark for the office of Senate President if elected as a Senator. The pressure from the North-East geopolitical zone, Vanguard further gathered, is presently being mounted by the 15 Senators-elect from the region who are agitating the zone to have a bigger cut in the polity. The major offices presently occupied by the zone are that of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation. While agitators from the group have sought to act as a group, speculations of the group’s agenda have continued to hover around Senator-elect Danjuma Goje, the outgoing Governor of Gombe State. Goje, Adamu 1st term members Goje and Adamu are both first term members who would ordinarily be barred from contending for principal officer position on the basis of the Senate’s adoption of ranking. They are, however, comforted by the fact that that clause was observed in the breach during the leadership election in 2007 when the former Clerk of the Senate, Alhaji Nasir Arab allowed the nomination of Senator-elect George Akume, then a first timer in the leadership contest. Akume is not in contention this time having won his re-election on the platform of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN. Insinuations Those canvassing the agenda of the North-East group, Vanguard learnt yesterday, are seeking to play on insinuations that the core North has become disadvantaged in the power calculus having lost the presidency to the South-South. That insinuation seeks to dismiss the fact that the Vice-President is from Kaduna State and that Senator Mark is also from the North, but a Christian from Benue State. The advocates are also canvassing that the Senate presidency should rotate to the core north after eight years in the South-East and four years in the North Central. Those arguments were yesterday pooh-poohed by advocates of Senator Mark. “The Senate presidency must not be reduced to such play on ethnicity and religion,” one associate of Senator Mark told Vanguard yesterday evening, asserting that the Mark camp was waiting for the PDP to unveil its zoning policy. PDP to unveil zoning policy at a retreat The party is expected to unveil the zoning policy at a retreat for freshly elected federal lawmakers holding between May 15 and 22. But ahead of the party’s resolution, interested groups including the North-East group have been strategizing to push forward their cases. A strategic meeting of one of the groups, Vanguard learnt is holding tomorrow. S-East demands speakership Meanwhile, outgoing federal lawmakers from the South-East are also canvassing to add the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the office of Deputy Senate President currently held by Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Vanguard learnt that the lawmakers including elected Senators and members of the lower chamber took the decision at a closed door meeting in Abuja yesterday. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/n-east-battles-mark-for-senate-presidency/ |
Crisis brews in S-West PDP over appointments, repositioning On May 3, 2011 · · In News BY DAYO JOHNSON AKURE – ANOTHER crisis is brewing in the South-West geo-political zone of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after its poor outing in the last elections as leaders of the party in the region plans to centralize the appointments due to it. The party leaders reportedly held a meeting in Ota, weekend, where the decision was made that former President Olusegun Obasanjo should liaise with the President on who get what due to the region. The meeting according to a reliable source was at the Obasanjo Farm in Ota, Ogun State and was attended by five persons from each of the states of the zone. Confirming that the meeting actually took place, the State Chairman of the PDP in Ondo State, Dr Tayo Dairo said what were discussed “are secret of the party to reposition it in the South West”. Dr Dairo declined further comments on the centralization of the appointment due to the region and the decision to make Obasanjo the link person with President Goodluck Jonathan. It was attended by the Chairmen and Secretaries of the party in the six states of the zone and one person from each of the senatorial districts. The meeting, it was gathered, decided to nominate two persons from each state to start early preparations for future elections. But reports from those that attended the meeting said that of all the decision taken the decision to centralize the position generated controversy as they could not agree on the choice of Obasanjo. The argument of those that attended the meeting was that Obasanjo may sideline those that are not in his good book across the states in the region and this would further widen the existing gap in the party. Consequently, after the meeting another meeting was said to have been held at an undisclosed location where party leaders planned to frustrate the headship of Obasanjo in the sensitive position in the interest of the party in the zone. Vanguard learnt that in the case of Ondo State it was argued by those not in the faction of the immediate past governor Olusegun Agagu that if Obasanjo was allowed he would nominate those in Agagu’s faction of the party to the detriment of other factions that worked for the success of President Goodluck Jonathan in the state. They argued that rather than unite the party, the choice of Obansanjo’s men would further polarize the party. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/crisis-brews-in-s-west-pdp-over-appointments-repositioning/ |
