Imo boils over guber election stalemate , PDP accuses REC, security agencies of bias From CHRIS ANUCHA, & VAL OKARA, Owerri Friday, April 29, 2011 https://www.sunnewsonline.com/images/rochas.gif Riot broke out yesterday evening at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office, Port-Harcourt Road, Owerri, Imo State over the stalemated governorship poll results. They literally laid a siege on the INEC office and prevented free movement in and out of the office. The youths urged INEC to declare the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate winner of the election. Problem started when people suspected to be supporters of the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rochas Okorocha prevented some vehicles from entering the INEC office. The youths vandalised vehicles including a Hilux pick-up with the presidency number plate, two Toyota Corrolla cars marked JE 318 AAA and JE 316 AAA respectively. Daily Sun learnt that the wife of Chief Arthur Nzeribe, a prominent politician in the state was seen in one of the vehicles. It took the effort of soldiers to spirit her out of the grip of the mob who were bent on lynching her. Occupants of the other vehicles were also thoroughly beaten and were about being lynched before they were rescued by soldiers. Result sheets and ballot papers, it was alleged were found in the vehicles. According to the irate youths, the vehicles were carrying fake results and ballot papers. But a soldier who spoke to Daily Sun said their anger was a misplaced aggression. According to him, the vehicles were carrying results from Delta State. Meanwhile, the wounded occupants were still in the custody of soldiers as at press time (5:48p.m) yesterday. Also, soldiers had been able to bring the situation under control. The governorship candidates of APGA and PDP, Owelle Okorocha and Gov. Ikedi Ohakim were running neck and neck before the state returning officer, Prof. Enoch Akobundu announced that the election was inclusive. The audience at the INEC headquarters, Owerri were shocked when the returning officer from Mbaitiolu, Mr Frank said that he had no result from the area but later acknowledged that he signed results brought out by one of the party agents. It was gathered that government officials and appointees had abandoned their official cars for fear of harassment or intimidation of angry youths. At the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, Owerri, security was beefed up as youths numbering over 5000 converged at a few metres to the commission’s office demanding the release of the remaining results. The youths who sat on the ground facing the armed Soldiers and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) were hell bent not to leave area until their demands were meant. It was learnt that crisis erupted in the area when the angry youths suspected some vehicles trying to enter the INEC headquarters as they accused the occupants of trying to smuggle some electoral results into the office. As a result of the tension in the state capital, Daily Sun observed that residents, especially civil servants had started rushing to Ekeukwu Owerri Market to buy food stuffs and stockpile them at their homes in case if there is a breakdown of law and order following the political logjam. Both Rochas and Ohakim were believed to have relocated to Abuja. However, the leadership the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-east geo-political zone has accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Imo State, Professor Celina Okoh , the collation officers as well as security agencies of bias in dealing with electoral matters. Addressing journalists yesterday at the state PDP Secretariat Okigwe Road, Vice Chairman South East zone, Chief Olisa Metu alleged that both INEC and Security agencies including the Army and the police allowed other political parties to import thugs into the state to harass and intimidate PDP supporters. Metu accused the REC, Prof Okoh of forcing the presiding officer from Mbaitoli, Mr Frank Mathias to annouce that there was no result from the area but turned around to deny the PO who was innocent of the whole deal. According to him, Imo people voted massively for the PDP. He boasted that the security agencies including President Goodluck Jonathan would not be able to handle the crisis if election is not conducted in the state within 24 hours. He further accused INEC of foot-dragging of fixing a new date for elections in areas declared inclusive. The LGAS include Ohaji / Egbema, Oguta and Ngor-Okpala. Reacting, the APGA director of publicity, Mrs Chioma Ogoke debunked the allegations describing PDP views as voice of a drowning person. He alleged that the PDP had engaged in thuggery and bribing of voters. Ogoke who said that APGA’s victory was the peoples mandate as the party had not been involved in any election violence and a such had not shared money to any electorate. A group of election monitoring observers who were billed to address the media yesterday left for their hotels disappointed as they alleged that the state government had not pay them their agreed allowances. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2011/apr/29/newsbreak-29-04-2011-001.htm |

S-East, S-South group laments killings in North On April 28, 2011 · · In News BY EMMA NNADOZIE The South-East, South-South Professionals, SESSP, a development and advocacy group, has bemoaned the loss of innocent lives in the post-election violence in some parts of north while extolling President Goodluck Jonathan and Professor Attahiru Jega, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, “for restoring the confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process by ensuring the conduct of the 2011 general elections was free and fair.” The group, however described Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change,CPC, as a bad loser. The group, in a statement in Lagos by its President, Emeka Ugwu-Oju and the Coordinator, Media Directorate, Nick Idoko, expressed sadness that nothing was done to provide security to safeguard the lives of the youth corps members and other defenceless citizens and blamed CPC and its principal, Muhammadu Buhari, whom it accused of inciting his followers. It called for “effective steps to be taken by all concerned stakeholders to support the integrity of the unfolding democratic process in Nigeria. According to the group, such support included preventing further violence and upholding citizens’ rights to democratic public expression, peaceful public assembly, transparent and fair elections. SESSP said: “It is encouraging and praiseworthy that leading civil society organizations, political figures, analysts and media in Nigeria and international organizations such as the European Union, EU, foreign and local observers, have taken important and positive steps in calling for this, while citizens and right organizations are working to re-assert a public space free from all forms of violence. “We also recognize and appreciate the important and difficult role of the Nigeria police in maintaining public security. We commend respect and support to the citzens’ legitimate right to peaceful assembly, and the restraint shown by the police at several points during the tragic riots. Protection of human security, prevention of violence both to property and to people, and support for peaceful and active engagement by citizens and responsible steps by all stakeholders to address the current situation are non-negotiable priorities”, Ugwu-Oju reiterated.” They described the riots as a throw-back to the cave wars of primitive societies and urged President Goodluck Jonathan to take decisive action and thoroughly investigate and unravel the immediate and remote circumstances surrounding the uprising and ensure that all actors implicated in the inhuman acts face the full wrath of the law. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/04/s-east-s-south-group-laments-killings-in-north/ |
bros1234:Is Ohakim not the one that stole his money so in actuallity kabasa77 is taking his money back. ![]() |
VERY DUMB THREAD. IGNORED. |
THE AMAKA:No need to change anything.Ignore the SWesterners.Thankk you. This Jonathan presidency feels good mehn. ![]() |
Chyz is from the SS. Ezeuche_, thanks for the title modification. ![]() |
ezeagu:I think with the Owelle on the team, the SE governors will better attack those problems that we have in the different SE locations such as Ebonyi and Abia. Remember, theyve been meeting and planning consistently, but one person was always missing which slows down development and progress. That dude was Ohakim. T.A. Orji, with him tribalistic attitude can really be an asset, especially now that UOK has been wiped out of the area. Really looking good for us. |
EzeUche__: ![]() |
EzeUche__:I'm not sure. Was wondering if it was the main runner up. I was told that he was the one who wanted to impose tax, and get rid of the non-clansmen in his area, especially in politics. |
EzeUche__:I got word from back home that the Ngwa candidate is in the hospital from getting is head macheted. Is this true? |
zstranger:your comment = stupid1. Ode burukuku |
Ileke-IdI:And still, with only a few lines, you seem to not make sense. SW, a one party region? I guess Mimko is no longer in LP. But hold up you went from a "one party region" to " does the SW not have PDP,ACN, and LP".Which is it? I'm lost. So where is the whole "one party region" coming from again? |
Ileke-IdI:I laugh at your statements because they make no sense whatsoever. What state in the SE has an ACN gov? Chime is in PDP, we wanted him,we got him. We(Igbo) wanted Amaechi,we got him. PDP was never our problem.May have been your problems but not ours. Promoting an Igbo political party together would have been ok ,but its not really needed. Maybe you have been blinded by your own ignorance, regardless off our governors party affiliations, they always have SE governors meetings. It's something that is constantly in the newspapers. Did the SW governors do that? uh-uh, no. Unity is something we already have. So we spoke with ONE voice and are still speaking with ONE voice. Mind your own and worry about your own people. |
ezeagu:Don't mind him my brotha. He is small boy. He might as well wipe his tears and wash his feet because his people are there to stay(in the background). No national cake for them,at lll at all. ![]() |
Eko Ile:I dont know what wilderness you're talking about but its clear that you all are in the background now so you better get use to it. It's a pity. OBJ really helped you all out but some how youve managed to screw yourselves once again. Too bad. |
ezeagu:It's called inferiority complex. The feel less progressive than us. |
Ileke-IdI:Speaking what you do not know.Go to the first page. You all measure urselves based off of whats going on with the Igbos. ![]() |
ezeagu:Exactly, yorubas are in competition with us, we are not in competition with them.Plain and simple. The measure their accomplishments by Igbo accomplishments. |
Eko Ile:Ileke, your sister, is putting up those pics. There is nothing wrong with you all celebrating.I like happiness, nothing wrong with that just stop feeling less competitive than us. You all dont have to feel important by measuring yourselves according to Igbo accomplishment/achievements. |
I have a feeling that if Ohakim rigs himself the winner, Rochas will have him killed. He better relax. |
So much boasting and there is not even anything on ground.Later, they will say Igbos boast too much, hypocrites. Insecurity makes you all to never feel accomplished unless you in some way think you have done it up over the Igbos. Are we that much of a threat to you all. Suppress your insecurities. Your people have been feeling less competitive than us since the 1st republic.Time for a change.Worry only about the SW,im sure you can do that. Kudos ![]() |
wired123:THis is about odua, not Igbo. Rejoice with your people and about your people, unless you would like me to derail this thread? |
Kobojunkie:Reread his comment. He is not saying in any way that Aljazeera is used for western propaganda. |
Kobojunkie:Riiiight. Like i thought. |
Kobojunkie:I'm still yet to see evidence of this 'massacre'. What i am only left with is propaganda, media manipulation. In Yemen, Syria, so on, there are recordings and proof. Where is the proof for the claims in libya? |
REC regrets posting to Yorubaland Tuesday, 26 April 2011 00:00 Yemi Bamidele, Ibadan Worried by the series of petitions and false alarms against him from different quarters, the Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Mr. Ayo Adakeja yesterday in Ibadan lamented his posting to the state. Mr. Adakeja, while addressing representatives of political parties and other stakeholders at the final round of pre-election meeting held at the INEC office in Ibadan expressed concern that some politicians in Oyo State were out to ruin him with their baseless accusations and rumours. “I regret coming to Yorubaland for this job of electoral umpire,” he declared to the consternation of people at the gathering including security chiefs. He said, “Series of rumours have been peddled against me, that I have collected so much. Yet there has been no basis upon which the rumour peddlers could substantiate their allegations. I have already umpired two elections over which they have been giving me kudos for good job. Despite all these, I have continued to receive threat messages on my cell phones on daily basis for alleged bias to one of the governorship candidates in the state. It has even gotten to the extent that they will destroy my children. Haba. Someone even called that one auxiliary was disturbing them in their area. What is my role in that? It is time the political leaders talk to their followers. Why are our people saying all these things? I thought we have put all these behind us. I don’t know why they are putting it up again.” But he insisted that he would continue to allow his conscience guide him, adding that everything in him would be put into the success of today’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state. While maintaining that all was set for free and fair elections, he told the forum that 15 political parties were participating in the governorship election in Oyo State, having fielded candidates for the polls http://www.dailytrust.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17822:rec-regrets-posting-to-yorubaland&catid=1:news&Itemid=2 |
koruji:Yes, the majority. Contrary to what you know majority libyan would rather deal with things internally that have western imposition by christian nations. At the rate of Libyas developent nigeria would need a time machine to catch up. As for gaddafi, his problem is staying in for too long, which gives the west even more of an excuse to invade his country and build propaganda. |
Opportunist. |
I guess that the same year all are going to have that subpar yoruba country of yours cause it aint gonna be in nigeria. |
koruji:That one "tribe" from benghazi is rebelling against him, not all of Libya. What about those, the majority, that want him to remain? If they take him out and I'm pose another person isn't that going against the people since majority rules? Also, yes you are right that 42 years rules is outrages but what of King abdullah of Saudi, he's done massacres that have actually been recorded, unlike the claimed massacre that Gadaffi was said to have done. As for the protesting, they didnt fire at them for "protesting", c'mon. Sure they would be fired on if they began to get violent, it is done that way here in the U.S. Have you seen how developed that country of Libya is, come see paradise in Africa, or at least close to it. Benghazi he the largest oil producing area in Libya, they felt that they were being marginalize based off their tribal affiliation. Putin is right, you got a long way to go if you think those external force will waste millions/billions of dollars just to help protect some Africans. |
