2020 Anambra Budget: N6 billion proposed for cargo airport construction

The Anambra State Government has set aside the sum of N6 billion for the construction of the Umueri International Cargo Airport near the state capital, Awka.

This was revealed when Governor Willie Obiano presented the state’s estimated budget of N137.1billion to the State House of Assembly.

The Details: N22.2 billion was allocated for the construction of roads and bridges while N6.98 billion was earmarked for implementing strategic initiatives in the health sector.

Why this matters: Obiano said he is investing into the airport to fulfil the promise he made during his 2017 governorship campaign. He noted that an international airport in the state will bring economic development and increase the income base in the state.

What you should know: Worried by the delay of the project since 2017, the traditional ruler of Umueri Community, Igwe Ben Emeka tasked the government to complete the project as soon as possible, seeing that the Arial survey equipment has been released.

The Aerial survey equipment was impounded at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), until appropriate clearance was obtained for the Chinese Consortium involved in the project.

About the Umueri Cargo Airport: In 2017, Governor Willie Obiano launched the Umueri Cargo Airport project. Obiano said the ‘Airport City Project’ would be developed on a 1500-acre site and would feature two runways, an aviation fuel facility, aircraft maintenance facility, airport hotel, business park and international convention centre.

The project is expected to generate 1200 direct and 3600 indirect jobs. The project is estimated to cost more than $2 billion and will be developed through a partnership between the Anambra State Government, Orient Petroleum Resources and Elite International Investments. Elite International Investments will provide all funds under a build, operate, manage and transfer agreement.

Anambra Airport City Infrastructure Limited allocated a 75% equity stake to Elite International Investments, 20% to Orient Petroleum Resources Limited and 5% to the State Government.

Not only has Lai being eerily silent but also Aso Rock over osinbanjo's current travails. Neither Garba shehu nor Adesina have come out to debunk any and all rumours surrounding Osinbanjo's looting of FIRS funds.

I know Lai's loyalty is first and foremost to Tinubu and then Buhari and since the latter are angry with Osinbanjo over the way he looted stolen campaign funds , it is safe to say Lai won't be sticking his lying tongue out for Osinbanjo. Same goes for Garba and Adesina.

ChimaAdeoye:
It is clear that the current Federal regime is determined to find silly excuses to close the ONLY international airport in the entire Southeast region. Rather than fix it, this airport has been criminally abandoned by the regime and now, they are looking for who to blame and excuses to close it down rather than fix the superficial issues identified.

When people fuss about terminal building without first identifying the evil done against the runway and taxiway, it exposes their ignorance about the plot of the ministry of aviation against the aiirpot.

1. The AIIA airport is still the ONLY international airport in Nigeria that lacks completed taxiways to both ends of the runway.
2. Five issues had been identified that would affect the successful expansion of the airport and the future second runway proposed for the airport. These issues are labeled A,B,C,D and E in the satellite image below.

A: Illegal and now abandoned classroom built by Nigerian Airforce Enugu very close to the main runway

B: The settlement on the northeast aspect of the airport which will prevent a second runway project if it's not relocated.

C: The suddenly growing construction of new settlement on the northwest aspect of the airport, which will frustrate a second runway

D: A Duplex recently built by a powerful ex-military man well within the safety distance upon completion of Taxiway to Runway 08

E: Eke-Orie Market Emene believed to have abattoir that can cause bird strike for incoming plane.

The question is WHY the abattoir has been made such a sensational issue by Hadi Sirika, while cleverly neglecting the abandoned classroom built by the air-force very close to the main runway nor the growing settlements within the airport side of Ekulo river that will frustrate the second runway expansion project if they are not addressed? Who is the former military man that was allowed to build a duplex so close to the taxiway to runway 08? Why was the Eke-Orie market speedily demolished, but this duplex that is even closer to the airport left unscathed?

If the FG is sincere about fixing the identified issues including resurfacing of the Enugu runway with new drainage, why not come clear with a project timeline and also identify airport very close to Enugu which will be used temporarily to divert Enugu flights to minimize inconvenience of passengers as he vehemently argued for Kaduna airport and not Lagos or Kano international airports, during a similar runway resurfacing project for Abuja airport?

It is clear the the FG is criminally intent on neglecting the Akanu Ibiam International airport because it believes it is an airport for Igbos and not for the entire country. Apart from Enugu International being incomparable to other international airports in Kano, PH, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja,
it is incomprehensible that the same FG will build a brand new International airport complete with Taxiways and night landing facilities in New Bussa, Niger State just to service Kainji dam, but neglect a major international airport serving a whole sub-region of Nigeria.

It is now one month and 3 days since the Akanu Ibiam International airport was notoriously shut down. Yet, not even one bulldozer has been mobilized to site to remove the illegal structures identified and extend the runway and taxiway as stated.

I feel there is a need for the authorities to keep an eye on the already identified illegal structures labeled A,B,C and D in the picture below. Those illegal structures could be removed as we are awaiting the construction equipment to mobilize to site. Again, those illegal structures A,B,C,D within the airport so no state approval is required to remove them now before construction on runway and taxiway begins. Especially the illegal structures labeled A and D which are along the path of the taxiway.

Truly, all we are really asking for isn't anything major or fancy. Just to build AIIA runway & taxiway to at least meet the Standard of New Bussa airport which was built to international standard of 3.5 KILOMETER by 60 METERS length and width of runway connected by the taxiway at both ends of the runway.
Then Buhari and Fulani cabal in his regime would have demonstrated goodwill towards Ndigbo and Igbos will in turn appreciate Buhari if this project was borne out of sincere desire to upgrade the airport runway and taxiways to meet the standard of other international airports at Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja and Lagos.

God bless you Sir!

I actually laugh at those clamouring for the airport to be closed down because they believe those Fulanis will truly build anything there.

Fulanis are ONLY interested in upgrading Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto airports.

If they had their way, they would even close Lagos and divert the traffic to Kaduna. They have tried in futility to make Kaduna a functional international airport and failed. That is why they are bent on destroying Enugu because Hadi Sirika says Kaduna is to the north what Enugu is to the East.So he didn't understand why Enugu should have a functional international airport, if Kaduna couldn't. While he conveniently forgot that they have Kano International in their zone, while the southeast zone doesn't even have any at all! Kano international airport is the reason why Kaduna cannot have a viable international airport operation. ]

Enugu is a resilient city because it was once a heavily damaged and destroyed city.

Yet it fixed itself and it is today one of the few livable cities in Nigeria. An amazing feat accomplished without any sort of Federal government reconstruction or re-development commission after the civil war. Infact, Enugu fixed itself despite overt negative actions by the Federal Government of Nigeria to keep it in the stone age by denying it any tangible federal presence or major project.
Even its international airport which was reluctantly approved after so many years of appeal has been closed down indefinitely by Buhari. Under the guise of 'Reconstructing its runway and taxiway"

The jury will be out to judge if the "work" they finally did in that airport justified closing it down for so long.

To be fair, IBB was a more patriotic nationalist than the jihadist impostor occupying Aso Rock today pretending to be Buhari.

The "concern" about the continued unity of Nigeria without even greater "concern" on the skewed federation forced on us today where only Fulani tribe dominates every aspect of governance, security and the economy should worry any patriotic citizen that wants Nigeria to survive.

Therefore, IBB should call on Buhari and people like him in Aso rock to stop pushing Nigeria to the precipice of war or disintegration by pursuing sectional interests such as RUGA and lopsided development of the country.
The average Fulani man hates Nigeria!!!
They only want Nigeria to remain together so they can have access to southern resources to loot.

If they really want Nigeria not to breakup, they would remove those factors such as intolerance and stop plotting injustices against sections of the country.

I don't know why the state houses of Assembly have not enacted a law banning open grazing in their states.

Is it when a clash of fulani herders from Sudan with local farmers leads to massive mob action attack and killing of fulanis in their various settlements that they will ban open grazing in the land scarce southeast zone?

The anger and frustration in the zone is building and it will take a very little spark to ignite. Yet, the state Houses of Assembly and Governors are dragging their feet to remove the potential trigger open grazing on people's farms can trigger sudden massive mob attack to retaliate death of farmers

Their plot had always been to run Igbos out of aviation business as they did to them in cement and generally in construction industry/construction companies.

Their next big target is how to close down major Igbo airports at Enugu, Owerri and Asaba under one excuse or using their standard deceitful lie "we will reconstruct the Igbo airport runway" .The same people that could not find money to fix one glass window broken by rainstorm for 4 years nor dig borehole in the airport! A "project" that will neither receive budgetary allocation nor the required funding from the aviation ministry to ensure the "project" will never see the light of day or be completed even in the next 10 years. So that they can ultimately divert the traffic to their airports and ruin the economy of the region.

In a statement released by his Personal Assistant, Ebere Nzewuji, Okorocha accused a top Imo State government official of ordering thugs to attack Mrs. Nwosu in Owerri. He warned that the continuous attack on him and members of his family, if not checked, willlead to a total break down of law and orders

“Few days ago, members of the Imo State Recovery Team went to her shop and looted her goods on the claims they were government property. They also went to the former first lady’s shop and carted away some containers. These were gift items and souvenirs she gives to first ladies and dignitaries during her annual August meeting, including items sold in her furniture shop.

These things happening in Imo State is very serious. It will lead to a total breakdown of law and order if care is not taken.
