Jeromejnr:"For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord." So then why did OP think he recieved something from the lord? "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." isn't this a direct contradiction? if we cant expect anything from the lord than why would we expect to be saved from sickness? and obviously the millions of children dying aren't being saved from their sickness. |
winner01:not the theory argument again. sigh. an excerpt from berkley explaining the meaning of a SCIENTIFIC theory: "Occasionally, scientific ideas (such as biological evolution) are written off with the putdown "it's just a theory." This slur is misleading and conflates two separate meanings of the word theory: in common usage, the word theory means just a hunch, but in science, a theory is a powerful explanation for a broad set of observations. To be accepted by the scientific community, a theory (in the scientific sense of the word) must be strongly supported by many different lines of evidence. So biological evolution is a theory (it is a well-supported, widely accepted, and powerful explanation for the diversity of life on Earth), but it is not "just" a theory. Words with both technical and everyday meanings often cause confusion. Even scientists sometimes use the word theory when they really mean hypothesis or even just a hunch. Many technical fields have similar vocabulary problems — for example, both the terms work in physics and ego in psychology have specific meanings in their technical fields that differ from their common uses. However, context and a little background knowledge are usually sufficient to figure out which meaning is intended." Here is the web page for evolutionary biology at Princeton, the number 6 most prestigious university in the world: http://molbio.princeton.edu/faculty/research/evolution Here is Harvard's page (#1 university in the world): http://www.oeb.harvard.edu/ Here is the University of Cambridge (#5 most prestigious university in the world): http://www.human-evol.cam.ac.uk/ Here is the pubmed page, a collection of over 400,000 peer-reviewed research writeups on discoveries & experiments supporting evolution: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=evolution Have fun telling all those people they are liars and all of their findings are false ![]() |
winner01:wow. you still did not answer me. i am not asking you why there is pain in the world. i am simply asking you this: WHY IS GOD BLESSING SOME PEOPLE AND NOT OTHERS. why are some people PROSPERING and other innocent people PERISHING even though they too are praying. WHY IS GOD ONLY CHOOSING TO BLESS SOME PEOPLE. HOW DOES HE CHOOSE WHO HE WANTS TO "BLESS" AND WHO HE WANTS TO LEAVE HANGING. I don't think you're going to answer me directly no matter how many times I type it. |
Jeromejnr:"cult kəlt/\ noun a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object. formal religious veneration : worship a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents" yeah, no. nice try though. |
winner01:sigh. you are just making up crap. 99% of biologists worldwide have already reached a concensus on evolution. WORLD WIDE. search "evolution" on pubmed and you will see thousands of independent studies from chinese, german, american, japanese scientists, supporting evolution. but you won't search it up because you are so determined to believe the false world you have created for yourself. okay, keep doing that. but stop spouting lies, its so frustrating, and an insult to the people around the world who study this stuff every day. and no we do not trust everything on the internet. there is such a thing as reputable sources. pubmed, websites from reknowned universities like harvard and princeton, national geographic, etc - these are reputable sources that all contain information in full support of evolution. or do you think they are all liars? you dont have to be a professional scientist to understand evolution (or any topic for that matter) and for you to assume that shows how childish your way of thinking is. anyone can go to a library or look at trustworthy online sources for information, and learn things. maybe you should try it some time. "Despite the overwhelming acceptance of evolution among scientists, and despite evolution’s centrality to modern biology education, virtually all national polls indicate that a strikingly large proportion of North Americans reject evolution, indicating a great disconnect between the scientific community and the largely dissenting and apparently under-informed, or misinformed, public" excerpt from a research paper by a university of syracruse student. you can substitute north americans for nigerians of course. |
timonski:demon-possessed atheists, huh? tell that to bill gates, b.f. skinner (the father of behavioral psychology), the other hundreds of atheists philosophers, scientists, inventors & innovators, and 50% of the chinese and western european population. yep, we are all possessed. you are so out of touch with reality. its scary to see how low the human brain can sink. and if you think the bible has no contradictions with science then i know for a fact you have never cracked open a single biology, geology, astronomy, or paleontology textbook in your life. |
winner01:Wow. I don't know what scientific findings you've been looking at. Creation.org? Jesusisreal.net? |
Jeromejnr:You sound so deluded right now its scary. I wish you could read your message from the perspective of an objective observer, you'd sound no different than a cult member |
analice107:I really hope this is sarcastic. |
winner01:That wasn't my point at all actually. You are still dodging my question. Why isn't god blessing the children who need food and water, but he is blessing the people on nairaland who claim to be blessed, like OP here? How does he decide who to bless and why aren't the people who seem to need it most getting blessed? What would the children who are starving have to do to get blessed too? |
ValentineMary:Thanks Yes I am! And I don't know many either, its a shame ![]() |
unphilaz:How'd you come to that conclusion? ![]() |
winner01:Way to try and distract from my point. Why would god bless only some people (with jobs, cars, and whatever else you praise god for) and not those innocent children with simple food and water? Answer that question without making an excuse. |
dearpreye:Wow, I've thought this to myself many times and you phrased it perfectly. |
Prayer studies. Quite a few have been performed and none have shown any difference in health, wellbeing, or speed of recovery from terminal illness, between those prayed for and those not prayed for. That should tell us something. |
3 million newborn babies die every year around the globe. Over 60% of Nigerians are suffering in poverty. Yes, god is so good. ![]() |
*facepalm* Having sex and wanting sex as an adult human being is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. Like any other species on earth our ultimate biological purpose is to survive and reproduce. Sex feels good and is tempting so that we are encouraged to reproduce. Oxytocin & other feel-good chemicals are released during sex to encourage partner bonding, making the sex-having couple likely to become emotionally close so they will care for the baby together - leading to enhanced survival for the baby. There are lots of other benefits and downsides of sex (i.e. fun, stress relief & cardio exercise, but potential heartbreak, pregnancy, STDs & emotional drama) but spirits are not even close to being on the list lol. Religion is nothing but people lacking knowledge, and therefore applying magical/"spiritual" explanations to simplify phenomena that they don't understand. Even STD's are simply bacteria (living organisms) and viruses finding their way into the human body through moist, nutrient-rich openings (like the urogenital areas) so they themselves can reproduce. STD's are not some kind of curse to punish people for having sex before marriage. There is no magic needed in explaining these things. And the concept of marriage was not around for the first 180,000 or so years of humanity anyway. Marriage is a man-made invention, there is no reason to think that sex before or after it makes any difference other than the potential social, economic, and emotional implications. |
Amberon:What the heck? Are you seriously still trying to compare things that have clear physical & chemical evidence for their existence (air, planets), to things that exist only in peoples' imaginations (devils, angels, gods)? Are you honestly trying to tell me you can't tell the difference between the two categories? Something is direly wrong with Nigeria's education system. |
She is completely correct. What an intelligent, insightful, and brave woman. Interesting how the so-called loving Christians are just shouting hatred towards her being transgender, derailing the conversation because you know you have nothing else to say. Christianity is BS and it's about time people started exposing it. |
The god of Christianity is a disgusting tyrant. Stop trying to make the lies make sense. It's just as horrible as it sounds which is why so many people are waking up & leaving Christianity by the droves. No matter what excuses anyone tries to make, an eternity of burning in flames for 70 or so years of misdeeds is the type of punishment a demon lord would inflict. Not to mention impossible, since fire only hurts when you have a functioning human body (& nerves) to feel it with. |
"The existence of a nice Muslim does not invalidate the statement that Islamic teachings advocate intolerance and violence toward non-Muslims" I agree. But I say the exact same goes for Christianity. Both religions need to go straight into a trashcan somewhere. |
Amberon:Sigh not this 3rd grade level air analogy again. You realize we can physically test air, right? And determine its chemical content with instruments? That's how we know air is real. We don't need to use our imaginations to conclude that air is real. |
Amberon:So... fiction is more real than reality? ![]() |
Islam and Christianity are both made up. |
OP, this only proves that atheists turn to theism for the same reasons people who are already theists cling to their theism - comfort, illusion of safety, desire to live forever, desperate desire for objective meaning. Unfortunately none of these say anything about whether their theistic claims are true or not. Just as any Christian (ex-atheist or not) can say, "I KNOW my God exists because (insert non-evidence based, emotional reason here)", anyone of any other faith or religion can say the same (I know Buddha's methods are the keys to enlightenment because ____. I know the Hindu God Krishna will cause me to reincarnate because ____). And since none of you would have any objective evidence for your claims, you're all on equal ground and there's no reason to believe any of you. Also, I'm quite certain the amount of people becoming atheist far trumps the amount of atheists becoming religious, especially in the modern day where atheism is more a result of the vast amount of scientific knowledge available to us now + open discourse about religion on the internet. |
All thoughts are produced by the brain. Our more primitive centers produce our automatic & subconscious thoughts and impulses, while our evolutionarily advanced areas (mainly the frontal lobe) produces our conscious, intentional thoughts and decision-making. Other areas of the brain - like the parietal and occipital, allow our thoughts and behavioral impulses to be enriched by and linked with linguistic, visual, and other sensory stimuli. So yes, as others have said, the mind and the brain are one. |
pretty much a spot on representation of why the adam & eve story represents god's utter unfairness. create two helpless animals that don't know anything (but put a thirst for knowledge in their psyche), then blame them for their desire to know the truth. and all-knowing, he would have known that eve would eat the fruit all along. a sadistic being indeed. |
OP beautifully stated post, I could not agree more. |
Annunaki:Evidently, you haven't read the verse where Jesus says "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. (NIV, Matthew 5:17–18)" And regardless of whatever modern Christians say about the "Old Testament not applying anymore", that doesn't change the fact that you still worship a god who at one point thought killing babies, raping women, and enslaving people were perfectly good things to tell people to do. |
malvisguy212:The common "context" excuse. Alright, to prove how bogus that cop-out is, answer me this: In what context, past or present, would the following be okay, moral, or good things to do?: - Raping innocent women - Stoning women for not being virgins on their wedding night - Throwing infants against rocks - Forcing people into slavery - Beating slaves until they pass out for a few days - Killing people for working on Saturday I'm waiting. |
I agree OP but Christianity is just as bad if you read about the atrocities God commanded in the old and new testaments. |
-guy gets shot at but the shot misses, god protected himSaw this comment on youtube and I don't think I've read anything more accurate. Thoughts? |
