why I wrote what I wrote in response to your comment was that because we play in that manner his hold up play and positioning should improve.

if he is on the half way line when we are under pressure and someone comes out with ball his positioning should give that player an option even if he is in the middle, then he needs to learn how to hold the ball to find someone else and then run forward to do damage.

I know Lukaku is doing his best I just think he can do better.

Lukaku plays too far from the opponents post and I can't think of any other striker in the top teams that's asked or forced to play this way. I'm not excusing his misses but if he was having 3-4 of this in a game he would be scoring goals. Lukaku would have scored if he played for arsenal yesterday

But isn't this because our general play seems to be very particular about defensive play and so it would rather stupid of Lukaku to stay upfront far from the team when we are probably under pressure (and we be in under pressure in a lot of games this season)

what is really not fair is when some people feel because you are a united fan then you must see positives in everything and not criticise when you feel a player or the coach is doing something wrong.

Amen o. Lukaku isn't the finished article yet, and thank God he knows this. He needs to improve on his off the ball movement as well as his finishing. No be everything be shot. A little placement or chip goes a long way most times.

But thr only way he can improve is if he continues playing and there's someone on his neck telling him his little mistakes and how to improve on them.

As a striker, your off the ball movement and ability to put the ball in the net are the most important. if that's where he is lacking and needs to improve only justifies why he is getting the criticisms he is getting.

He had one or two chances to score a typical striker goal. But he reacted poorly like he were a defensive midfielder who find himself in a scoring position. His hold up play was also none existence. I doubt if he won any long ball from our defence. Yet he is tall and powerful.

sometimes bit looks as if is doing a lot of work doing nothing in particular, especially when he does not win balls and his hold up play is poor.

But i will still be patient with him and play usually leaves him isolated up front, although that's why he needs to up his hold up play when he gets the ball.

well, the funny thing about all this is that we might end up doing very well against assanal and city only to spoil everything with supposed smaller teams.

At this rate, the pressure is on us more than city... City, Chelsea and Arsenal are at home for their next two games. The first time games will be played in less than 4 or 5 days this season. One would expect them to have dropped points if they were away but at home i don't think any of them would except Arsenal. Unfortunately for us we go away in the same period and we are usually awful away. We might have conceded second place to Chelsea by the time those matches are out of the way.

Dont worry, we will bring our A game of being lackadaisical, lethargic and annoying and win......Sic!!!

Thank you. Chelsea didn't offer drab performances last season to win the league. Our players seem to be too relaxed and at ease. Sometimes it's as if they expect the opponent to hand them the 3 points without having to work for it.

if the essense of playing in the league is to win then we can never win the league with this drab lethargic and lackadaisical style of play. Yes we will win some games playing drab football but on the long run it can never help win us anything especially the EPL.

There are a few elements in "better football". missing in entertaining football.

Nobody expect Valencia to finish above madrid, or spurs to knock them out, same way no one expect Watford to finish above arsenal. The gulf in class and statue between Madird and Valencia is not same with Chelsea and united. United is a bigger team than Chelsea so being ahead of them, though they may go down at some point, should not be sneered at. playing "better football" as you term it does not put points on the table, result does. Wenger played better football than fergie but fergie won 10 EPLs 2 champions league.
