Christianity EtcRe: Christianity For Christians. by cold(m): 11:52pm On Jun 10, 2012
Methinks the religious section should be scrapped altogether.Religion is too divisive & make sane people act in an irrational manner, whether online or in real life the story is the same.Take a look around the world. Muslims are carrying out violent attacks on other Muslims and non-Muslims. Catholics in some countries are attacking non-Catholics and Protestants are carrying out violent attacks on other entities; Christians are divided amongst themselves; there is not one entity, but a plethora of various paths e.g. Congregational, Baptists, Coptic,Pentecostals etc. etc. Leaders & so called Men of God of some groups announce that they are the true ones and that if you follow another path you are doomed. I was taught that religion was supposed to be a unifying act. Wars have been and are being fought in the name of religion. Its about time we woke up and take a hard look at what we call the arbiter of peace.
Religion in excessive doses kills.Besides, like some posters have alluded to,If Seun caves in to this demand, the Atheists would want Atheists for Atheists,Agnostic for Agnostics,Satanic for Satanists,Ogboni for Ogbonis & so on & so forth.where then do we draw the line

Dana Crash: Co-pilot Amaechi Obodo is alive
Posted about 4 hours ago | 3 comments
His name was listed as one of the crew members of the ill-fated Dana Flight 9J-922. His face was published on the pages of the papers as a victim of the crash. But yesterday, Mr. Amaechi Obodo, a co-pilot at Dana Air declared that he was alive and well.

YNaija had reported a day after the crash that the pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer were all non-Nigerians. However some papers had erroneously included Mr Amaechi Obodo, indigene of Delta State, among the crew.

He said he did not fly that day because he was off duty from Friday to Sunday and stayed with his mother all through the day.

Mr Obodo however bemoaned the loss of lives in the crash and spoke glowingly of his colleagues that died in the crash, saying: “I loved them dearly. We were on duty together and it is very unfortunate that I lost them that way. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”

The co-pilot came out strongly in defence of his employers, Dana Air, absolving them of any accusation of negligence. He said: “My Airline is the best in the country. I can confidently say that because we are the people that work there. People are just spreading rumours about Dana Air. It is unfortunate it happened that way, nobody could have prayed for it to happen”

On the allegations that the plane was faulty, Obodo said: “The report of the investigations would clear the issue. We need to wait for the result of the black box.”

PoliticsPatience Jonathan Did Not Cause Crash-fg by cold(op): 11:38pm On Jun 05, 2012
The Presidency has condemned what it described as an orchestrated plan to politicise the Sunday Dana Air crash in Lagos.

This reaction was in reference to rumours that the VIP movement of the first lady, Patience Jonathan, may have been a possible cause of the accident.

A statement by the Special Assistant to the President, Office of the First Lady, Ayo Osinlu, said though the first lady was in Lagos at the weekend she was no where close to the airport.

"Our attention has been drawn to the orchestrated plan to politicise the Sunday Dana Air crash in Lagos in which many people lost their lives, through rumours about the possible cause of the accident citing VIP movement involving the wife of the president," he said.

"We consider it callous, inhuman and devilish for anyone to have thought of wrapping such national calamity in political garb by insinuating that the plane crashed because the airspace was closed for the first lady's movement in Lagos.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the first lady arrived Lagos at about 2pm on Saturday, 2nd June, 2012 for a private engagement and was billed to leave for Abuja on Monday, 4th June, 2012.

In compliance with her itinerary, she arrived Lagos on Saturday. She was at a public event on Sunday when the accident occurred and promptly abandoned the ceremony as a mark of respect for the victims and retired to the State House, Marina. She left Lagos at exactly 13.15hrs on Monday, 4th June, 2012, according to schedule.

It is therefore surprising that some mischievous persons will see this moment of national mourning as an opportunity to blackmail and impugn the first lady’s integrity. This is the time for all Nigerians to be sober and pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and not a time to subordinate the interests of our nation to narrow self-serving interests.

Let us all put the interest of the nation first in whatever we do. Mrs Jonathan had no intention to travel on Sunday and never did. Like all Nigerians, she has been mourning the dead."

Ganys: wheat flour.
Peter Edeh (PDP, Edo) who led the opposition against the bill argued that compelling manufacturers of flour to include cassava would amount to compelling Nigerians to eat products thatmay be injurious to their health.
“30 to 40 per cent of Nigerians are diabetic and it will be unfair to compel them to eat cassava products since mostdiabetic patients are barred from consuming foods such as cassava,” he said.
“It will be impinging on people’s rights and endangering their lives to compulsorily include cassava in what theyeat.”

Cassava Helping Control Diabetes
Lesser known foods such as cassava are not so much considered for snacks but there are more reasons why you should think otherwise. Cassava root is very rich in starch and contains significant amounts of calcium, dietary fibre, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin b6 and vitamin C. Dietary fibre has been associated with lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, colon cancer, and helping control diabetes. A recent study conducted in the Philippines (one of the countries where cassava is an important crop) looked into the effects of root crops and legumes in lowering cholesterol levels among humans with moderately-raised cholesterol levels. The study showed that cassava significantly decreased total cholesterol levels, decreased low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (considered as “bad” cholesterol), and may help lower triglyceride levels due to its high total dietary fibre content. Other studies show that cassava may help support the nervous system and help alleviate stress, anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome. People cook and use Cassava in many different ways and dishes like, instead of potatoes, with meats, in purees, in dumplings, in soups, in stews, in gravies, in cakes, in pudding, in chips, and it can be made into syrup or breads.

PoliticsNational Assembly Is A Den Of Rogues & Armed Robbers - Obasanjo by cold(op): 11:38am On May 23, 2012
Rogues, armed robbers in N’Assembly – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday descended on the nation’s legislature, judiciary and the police, describing them as corrupt, and that they held no hope for the country.

Obasanjo described the majority of lawmakers at the national and state assemblies as “rogues and armed robbers,” and the judiciary as corrupt.

Obasanjo, however, rated the lawmakers as better than the police in crime and corruption.

He said, “Integrity is necessary for systems and institutions to be strong. Today, rogues, armed robbers are in the state Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly. What sort of laws will they make?

“The judiciary is also corrupt. During my tenure, many of the corrupt judges were removed, some are still there.

“If the Judiciary becomes corrupt, where is the hope for the nation? Justice, no doubt, will go to the highest bidder. The judiciary did not see anything wrong with a former governor but the same set of evidence was used to sentence him in the United Kingdom.

“The police are even worse. Well, I will not lament; I will only say, ‘let us understand our problems and emphasise the good ones.’”

The former President, who spoke at the fourth Academy for Entrepreneurial Studies, Nigeria, annual national conference in Lagos, also did not spare the citizenry, accusing them of lacking in diligence and integrity.

The conference had the theme, “Strong Systems: Necessity for Building a Virile Nation.”

“The problem is that the diligence that was being undertaken before people are appointed or elected is no more today,” Obasanjo said.

He said the country needed strong, stable, enduring and sustainable institutions for the country to remain virile, dynamic and successful.

“I believe we will get there, but all Nigerians must play their roles,” Obasanjo said.

The Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola, at the same event, made a case for state police as part of the measures to build strong judicial system.

“The question of whether we will have state police ‘is not a matter of if, but when’. If we want our judicial system to be strong, we need a well-motivated, equipped, remunerated and efficient police system,” Fashola said.

The governor, who said the Judiciary did not belong to the government but a part of it, added that there was the need for Nigerians to re-assess their values if strong systems and institutions could exist.

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), who was the Chairman of the occasion, urged all Nigerians to work for the unity of the country, saying the country’s oneness is not negotiable.

“Nigeria is not a bad nation or where nothing works. It is not a country that anything goes; we may have got it wrong somewhere, but we are on the right track. This does not make us a failed nation or people. The need for strong systems to achieve a virile nation is a necessity,” Gowon said.

Also, former Head, Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, said Nigeria needed a stable socio-economic environment to grow the economy, stressing that there was absolute need to improve the security in the country.

“We must improve on our governance system and the age-long values of hard work, honesty and integrity. The judicial system also matters. Justice must not only be seen but must be clearly seen to be done. Corruption must be battled and exterminated because it tarnishes the image of our country and discourages investment,” Shonekan said.

A lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, said there was no doubt that Nigeria had strong systems and institutions but the operators (the political elite) were the problems of the country.

“There is nothing wrong with Nigeria but with the 90 per cent of the political elite who have neutralised all the laws in the country. Nigeria public officers do not resign on the grounds of principles. The country is a value-deficient society,” Sagay said.

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Uwais, said the problem of corruption had spread even to the judiciary, adding that during his tenure as CJN, many judges were removed on the grounds of corruption.

“Without a strong judiciary, even though you have a strong economy, the economy will find it difficult to grow,” Uwais stated.

President, AES, Dr. Ausbeth Ajagu, urged Nigerians to imbibe ethical values to move the country forward.

“Leadership in Nigeria is characterised by ego system. Our leaders usually fail to understand that government is a continuum and this has led to mismanagement of funds by abandoning the programmes of their predecessors,” Ajagu said.

PoliticsSalami Will Not Be Reinstated-fg by cold(op): 12:26am On May 23, 2012
Minister of Justice says FG will not reinstate Justice Salami
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke has said that the Federal Government will not act on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council that the suspension be lifted off former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami and he be reinstated to his former post.

While addressing journalists at the Ministerial press briefing in Abuja today, Adoke argued that the “matter is subjudice”. The Minister of Justice explained that the government received notification of court proceeding in Justice Salami’s case in August last year, about the same time that the NJC sent a letter to President Jonathan asking that he suspend the former PCA and recommending that he be sacked.

However, earlier this month the NJC changed its tune, and in a move that it hoped would end in-house squabbling, recommended to the President that Salami be reinstated after being suspended for nine months.

Adoke said while the NJC was willing to reverse the suspension and reinstate Salami, the matter is still in court and no “responsible government will try to overreach the court”.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice also defended the Nigerian judiciary, which has been heavily criticised after a London court tried, convicted and sentenced former Delta state governor, James Ibori, on a 10-count charge of money laundering and fraud, especially as a Nigerian court acquitted him of 170 charges years earlier.

The celebrated conviction shed a bad light on the Nigerian judiciary, already criticised for being too slow and ineffective.

Adoke, speaking at the ministerial press briefings, said “the fact that Ibori was convicted there (in London) does not in anyway discredit the Nigerian judiciary because they have used plea bargain in securing his conviction”.

The Minister of Justice, defending the decision of the Nigerian courts to free Ibori, argued that had a plea bargain been applied in Ibori’s case in Nigeria, the public would have condemned it.

GAR3TH: As homophobic as I am what i really cant stand is the utter Bigotry I keep seeing on Nairaland. Every time a gay thread opens you see people flood it with bible quotes, praising the lord etc. But isn't it the same Bible that also condemns polygamy, divorce, monogamy, lifelong celibacy, adultery, Gluttony etc because they are also sin. So How many Nairalanders are FAT, then in that case you are going to hell for gluttony. How many Nairalanders are divorced or remarried, well your going to hell because that is a sin.

My point is you just cant pick and choose what is sin or what is not. You just cant say that Homosexuality is a sin and divorcing, polygamy or gluttony is not. That call being a Bigot, either everything that is stated in the bible is sin or every thing is not, Simple.

In short, you can remove the African from the bush, but you cannot remove the bush from the African. Place an African in a 'first world' country, he/she will still prefer to eat very hot Eba or Akpu with his fingers even when forks and knives are readily available.
So in your mind's eye,eating with a fork & a knife translates to innovation?Smh,what of chopsticks?No?

PoliticsRe: Theories To Explain The Backward State Of Africa by cold(m): 2:24am On May 09, 2012
There is no way we can address the underdevelopment of Africa without discussing the over-indulgence of Africans in religious deities. In fact,as far i'm concerned religion is a major hindrance to the develpment of African societies.Corruption & rudderless leadership all stem from the notoriously religious nature of the typical African nay the black man. Here is an excerpt from an article that puts it succinctly:

Mythologies hypnotize people, particularly early in childhood. They manipulate societies as
much as societies manipulate them. In Africa, mythological Gods - not scientific knowledge
- pervade African mindsets. These gods have the power of invading all areas of human life
(To a man with an empty stomach, food is God -Mahatma Gandhi). This is exemplified by
the following examples taken from the local press. A group of Imams in northern Nigeria
obstinately defends the idea that God commands all African men to grow beards in a certain
shape and a certain length. A young Mauritanian girl agrees with Core mutilation, veiling
and forced marriage ‘because god wants me to’. A preacher in Sudan explains the particular
way god wants wives to be beaten by their husbands. Still more telling is perhaps what is
not making news. Indeed, the African Christian mindscape, for example is full of truly
amazing weird winged anthropomorphic figures or humanoids such as phantoms, ghosts,
spirits, angels, archangels, guardian angels and devils. It is full of myths, such as divine
conceptions, immortality (pharaohs), after-lives, guiding stars, annunciations, miracles and
salvation – mythologies that predate Christianity.
These mythologies are kept alive with extensive rituals and celebrations. Mythological
indigenous knowledge, on the other hand, is filled with deities, spirits, superstitions,
fallacies, fictions, specters, phantasmagorias, chimeras, misconceptions, confabulations,
palavers, fantasies, and ancient cults, rituals and taboos. In many African languages the
word ‘god’, particularly in Islamic and Christian Africa, is continuously repeated throughout the day in salutations, enquiries, thanking, etc. Mythologies and superstitions are
by no means limited to Africa and to developing countries but African mythologies,
whether imported or home grown, are not helpful for bringing about a scientific culture and
is – under certain conditions - quite useless, if not counterproductive, to achieve sustainable
development. It is useless, for instance, for competing with China in low-tech industrial
goods, the main industrial competitor of Africa. There is an urgent need for de-deifying
African knowledge
.
