It looks like people here are still blind. The problem is neither the so-called leaders nor the hapless “citizens”. The problem is the country itself.
The country was designed by a group of heartless English brigands for one purpose only. That purpose is theft.
The aim was (and still is) to fleece the resources of the unfortunate indigenous population of this colonial prison and stash such loot outside the country.
Successive local thugs masquerading as rulers have continued with this grand tradition albeit with a few tweaks here and there. The results have always been the same.
There is only one solution. Rather than casting aspersions on ethnic groups and individuals, simply dismantle the contraption and allow us to build our own indigenous nations and solve our problems locally. |

Abagworo: Language wise Ikwerre is definitely Igbo but ethnicity wise it remains a hydra headed debate. There is difference between central Ikwerre and central Igbo but the fringes of both speak basically the same dialect. The deviation is probably 30% from a deeper dialect like Nnewi or Onitsha but 10% for Ohaji and 12% for Owerri and Etche. So Owerri, Ohaji and Etche will easily communicate with Ikwerre. Onitsha will communicate but with much more difficulty and stalemate in some circumstances You’re mostly correct but you made an error. There is no such animal as central Igbo. No one speaks it. Even the synthesized dialect spoken in key urban areas differ from city to city. So when you say Ikwerre differs from “central” Igbo, you’re basically saying nothing because all traditional Igbo dialects differ from the synthetic one. P.S I think your 10% for Ohaji may be too high. I think it’s virtually the same with what is spoken in places close to the state border like Ubima. You may know better since you’re an Ikwerre speaker. |

Meanwhile I don't see anything special about being Nigerian president, The North have been presiding for long and they are the most backward people on earth, a lot of killings have been going on in the north and in katsina in particular, and Buhari being Nigerian president from the north can't help his people I don’t understand how people get away with moronic statements. What business does an average Okeke or Okafor have with their “Igbo Presidency”? If he and his other thieving friends want to become President, they should go build their bridges and leave us all out of it. Meanwhile, he’s currently earning a well deserved and expected F in his actual primary responsibility of providing governance to the long suffering people of my state. However, he still finds the time to dish out unsolicited advice on an issue that is of tangential importance to us while ignoring the actual challenges facing us today. |

Tranquill: Now may I ask, Who is an Igbo man? Who or what defines an Igbo man? If an Hausa man moves from Bauchi to settle in Umuahia, at what point in his generation can they become Igbos? Is being Igbo defined by language, ancestral origin or by default of birth location? Thanks. Ethnicity is a social concept. It’s not by DNA. There are descendants of very recent Igala and even Ijaw immigrants in the SE who now identify as Igbo. In some parts of Abia, Efik names are not uncommon but today they all identify as Igbo. Obviously, language is an important aspect of what makes you an Igbo person. However, I believe that you have to at least self identify as Igbo to be Igbo. If you don’t identify as Igbo (not emergency identification like some potential presidential candidates oh) then you obviously not Igbo. Our culture doesn’t allow us to tell another man what to call himself. |

Tranquill: I know it is for Eshans and some tribe in the Volta region of Ghana that also trace their origin to Idu which is the present day Benin. Ikwerre people do not claim to be Binis but that their ancestors migrated from Benin unlike the Igbos who claim to have their ancestral origin in Ani Nri, Anambra. So their provenance are different. The Igbos know this also but just for the desperation of wanting to claim that Portharcourt belongs to the Igbos that's the reason they are forcing their imagination of seeing Ikwerre people as Igbos. Ikwerre is not Igbo. All the Igbos that have told you that you're not Igbo on this thread are not enough. You have to cling to a single Igbo person who has never met an Ikwerre man before to say that we are claiming you because of Pitakwa that you are even sharing with Okrika people. P.S Igbo is an ethnic group not a single tribe. There are many tribes in Igboland (like Isu, Ngwa, Ndoki, Aro, Orotta etc) As such the question of a single origin story for all Igbo is inappropriate. A large percentage of Igbo people don't claim to originate from Nri. I don't even know where you got that assertion from. |

Yujin: You can make your research on what I wrote here. Every contact with an empire surely leaves traces. Even the Igalas contact with old Benin has proofs. The Agaba-Idu, Attah of Igala wears a benin bronze sculpture on his neck till date. Notice the word 'Idu' in his praise name. I'll like to know the meaning of 'Agaba' in Igala language. In Lagos state, the presence of Idu confirms the benin influence too. Idumota, Idumagbo etc. As for Ikwerres, no single shared word with bini. Let me tell you another lexicon that shows cultural influence. In Igbo language, there are two words to refer a warrior or strong man. These words are Odogwu and Dike. Most Igbos in the northern and western parts of Igboland easily use 'Odogwu' while the eastern and southern parts use 'Dike'. The Ikwerres who are in the southernmost part use 'Dike'. Odogwu is not part of their dialectical usage. This is another pointer that they've never had contact with the binis. There are too many pointers to ridicule any of their claim of bini as a place of origin. All this scholarship should be put to better use than wasting it on this rather inconsequential issue. This topic is only good for laughs. It’s so tangential to our interests as to be actually unimportant. If the people say they are Edoid, we have to accept it. Some of you have been Igbo all your lives so you think it is easy and then want to extend the privilege to any random group of people that can say “Bia”. |

gartamanta: What nobody ever managed to explain is if Ikwerres actually migrated from Bini to Rivers, how come their language is Igbo? How come they now have Igbo surnames? What happened to their Bini language and surnames? Are we really to believe that Ikwerres are Bini migrants who chose to forget their language and names for no reason? Its not like Rivers state is that far from Edo. Someone should tell me how and why Ikwerres dropped their Bini language and names for Igbo The answer to your poser is very simple. After their tortuous and traumatic journey from Benin, they lost their Edoid language and then spent the next few years without a language, only communicating by means of sign language and grunts. This made some uncharitable fellows christen them ihoriho (meaning foolish). This state of affairs continued until a kind (and patient) woman from Ohaji in present day Imo State took pity on them and taught them the Ohaji dialect which is why Ikwerre is so similar to the Ohaji dialect. |

Politics › Re: The Politics Of Islam In Nigeria by Collyweed: 9:14am On Jun 26, 2020 |
[s] Bulleye: That the Sokoto Caliphate is headed by a Fulani is a fact. It is also established that only Muslims of Fulani descent can ascend the throne of Sultan of Sokoto. The Sultanate is more political than religious from the antecedents of the occupiers of the throne. We should also not forget that Sokoto Caliphate is a symbol of conquest by the Fulani. And finally the Caliphate is a pride of the Fulani ethnic nationality.
However we should not forget that the influence of the Caliphate does not extend beyond the localities of the Fulani. In other words the Caliphate is not expected to dictate to other ethnic nationalities outside the Fulani zones. Doing so will be tantamount to pursuing the greater Fulani agenda of subduing non - Fulani living outside the Fulani ethnic zones.
Surprisingly, the Caliphate is not relenting in the battle to dominate the non - Fulani. To achieve this hegemonic agenda, the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs was created. The office of president- general is the highest position in the body and is perpetually reserved for the Sultan who is a Fulani. A non - Fulani can not be Sultan. And since only the Sultan of Sokoto can be the president - general, it then follows that only a Fulani can head the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
O mankind, your Lord is One and your father is one. You all descended from Aadam, and Aadam was created from earth. He is most honored among you in the sight of God who is most upright. No Arab is superior to a non-Arab, no colored person to a white person, or a white person to a colored person except by Taqwa (piety)." [Ahmad and At-Tirmithi ]
The above quotation is in support of the fact a Fulani does not have to head the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. And as a result the League of Imam and Alfas in Western region was created to affirm the equality of mankind. Therefore Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs should change its name to Fulani Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs since only persons of Fulani descent can head it. [/s] Please take this superstitious nonsense to myths and legends religion section. It’s none of our business here. Thank you. |

While their southern counterparts formed drinking clubs and useless pointless campus fraternities which only saw them attack and kill themselves for no reason whatsoever, the northern youth were actively engaged on campus agitations for what they believed will benefit and uplift them in future.
It is still ongoing today as we see southern idiots collecting crumbs to campaign, shill and defend their Awusa masters.
Today the south is shouting for restructuring and an outright review of the 1999 constitution which is a facsimile of the Sharia laced 1979 constitution.
The question to ask is ; where were the southern youth when sharia was openly included into out constitution? One would think that the southern clowns would have become smarter by now but their continued mumuness and infighting means that the Mumu-zlem oligarchy doesn’t even have to try hard to keep their stranglehold on political power - which is apparently their drug of choice. |

omonnakoda: From all accounts ?
Which accounts do you know?
They were obtained by a number of routes Slave raids through the secret activities of Okonko society The Aros in particular raided all over Iboland using mercenaries from Abam People were sentenced into slavery for various crimes or debt but as demand grew Raids or kidnapping was the main source and this was organised by external forces.
The point is the Umunna level organisation was a victim of stronger better organised forces.
Go and study the works of the likes of Apollos Nwauwa Guy, stick to what you know. Which raids are you talking about when Aro communities are scattered all over the former Eastern region? How can raid a place and still be living with them? The people used the trade as a means of getting rid of undesirables. Yes, there were some kidnapping but that was not a major issue. |
Politics › Re: Watch 1964 Television Interview Of Chinua Achebe By Wole Soyinka by Collyweed: 8:35am On May 31, 2020 |
omonnakoda: That is a fallacious representation of history
If you think of Iboland as a palm kernel with a core and periphery
There were monarchies in the periphery as a result of conquests from external powers
Onitsga,Eri,Arochukwu Oguta are good examples
Arochukwu terrorised the core of Iboland for generations selling them of as slaves and they were helpless to do anything. It is clear if Europeans did not arrive they would have been forced to coalesce into something bigger.
The idea that their model served them well is fiction
They were just developmentally backward compared to their neighbours.
Arochukwu is a classic example of dulosis The Akamkpa came from modern day Cross River,Akwa Ibom and installed a monarchy in Arochukwu their own deity Ibini Ukpabi as well as Okonko,Ekpe traditions and used that platform to plunder the disparate villages for millions of slaves which were sold via Bonny.
When you hear Asari Dokubo boasting about how they sold Ibos it is not empty talk. The Ijaw were not as many but better organised and they too sold millions of Ibos.
Is it not striking than when you read slavers memoirs you hardly hear of Efik Ijaw,Ibibio slaves from the Bight of Biafra.
What you hear of is mostly Ibo slaves sold by Ijaws, Ibibio Neither the Aro nor the Ijaw sold slaves because they were “terrorizing” the Igbos. From all accounts, most of the slaves were not obtained through warfare. The Ijaws were simply middlemen because of their coastal location (just like the Ijebu sold a lot of Yorubas). The Aros had (still have) a community in Kalabari and Asari’s ancestors success in the trade was most likely because he was originally Abam (a people from present day Abia who had a strong confederal relationship with the Aro). |
