Travel / Re: Nigerians In The UK Are Really Suffering by Coolcube: 9:42pm On Jul 06, 2023
The reality is that such complaints about the UK being hard are from students who have restricted hours to work and have tuition to pay. AND they are new in the system. With time, things get better when they reskill/get certified, start a career and adjust into the system

A scenario of a couple, both working the normal 40 hours per week (even on the livng wage £10.5-13 per hour) will have a take home of about £3,000 outside of London. Thats working blue collar. If they have no or one child, they can conveniently save about £400 pounds every month, as schooling is largely free for kids. Thats about N400,000 per month. Yeah, I understand that some people can save more than this is Naija, such people need not come to the UK to live. However, if you are not yet at that cadre where at the barest minimun even when you and your partner work full time you can save 150k per month, then let no one tell you UK is not good!

Once a person starts a good career here in the UK (after schooling or getting certfied), he/she WILL BALL for life, provided sense dey and the NRC no get hand for im matter! At least certain things like housing are sure without much stress or system working against you. A Naija guy in his 40s here just bought a 5 bed room house from a Development Group where I work at £349,000. Sure, it is mortage, and he will pay over a period. The Naija blood in me even felt that was too much, but he is a big guy in corprate world here and come to think of it, if he sells the house in another 20 years to say he is retiring home, he would have nothing less than half a billion in naira to himself, if not more! Working class Nigerians are also starting businesses here...consulting and making cool cash.

Summary: people can do well or otherwise in Nigeria. And people can do well or otherwise in the UK. My take: the odds of doing well in a Tier 1 or 2 country are higher than in Nigeria. All one needs is a plan. Don't come into the UK with the Naija boss mentality of "I have 2 maids and three cars, so I cant adjust." Get certified in a profession or re-skill into something more valuable in the new enviroment and dont get stuck on shitty jobs because they pay the bill and you can send some money home to build a house. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Anywhere we dey, may God make a way for us.

God bless Naija my country!
God save the King and keep the UK!

Hello, please I am interested in the thread on this topic. A newbie into Cybersecurity and would be needing guidance.

semmyk:
A number of factors come into play. The overriding nonetheless is 'what do you want', what do you want to achieve as a person/family?
Those factors include
- location linked with pay. consider what dupyshoo, rayralph, Hwy9 have hinted.
- -- ... But I intend to email them stating 40-45k ... I'll say in the circumstances, you might want to indicate £40-50k
- -- even at that, salary is ultimately nothing but a 'figure' that gets you by the month! It is relative, subjective. The reality differs from person to person.
- -- ... 7 years of experience in cybersecurity ... | For negotiation, your 7yrs might not really counts. It'll revolve around the role itself. In this instance, Asst Mgr.
- -- Inbtw, it is not uncommon to see WIDE salary gap/discrepancy within the BIG 4 and BIG 6. In fact, in most 'audit' firms. I've seen that often. To compound, the gap gets wider, more than 'mind the gap', when salary increment creeps in year-on-year based on (the so-called) performance appraisal scores!
- Salary structure
- -- what are they offering.
- -- Typically basic.
- --If it's total package, check what it constitutes
- -- Any private care: BUPA
- -- Pension contribution %
- -- Bonus
- -- ... NB: At times, some of the 'non-financial' weighs more as you aged!
- Role: I note you've already stated its IT security audit
- -- Will you only be supporting Audit cycles. In that case, will your role be constrained to those ITGC stuff.
- -- Will you end up in narrowed sector or tech spectrum: SAP only, Oracle only or wide spectrum of technology solutions (subject to clients!). To be honest, most times, this comes to light only after months on the job. Lemme quickly chip in here that in most audit firm, to get to=hose '4' & '5' performance review scores, you must be an entrepreneur within the whole Audit firm, sourcing for 'work' to be done, collaborating and 'innovating'. Unfortunately, most get this done through 'smoke' breaks, lunch out, drinks out with an 'eye-service' attitude!! Eish, don't get me started.
- -- What is the roadmap to becoming a Manager (where you actually get to review collated (audit) work papers, prepare reports, be part of getting mgt response to audit findings, and be part of scoping audit engagements). PS: some might throw an Asst Mgt into a hybrid mode of senior consultant/associate and Mgr.

Lastly, I know I commented on cybersecurity earlier in the year. I'll try looking for the post.
A lot of 'new-breed' gloss over cybersecurity. unfortunately, the press ain't helping, and neither are mgt/directors assisting as they pick up buzzwords in-flight. NIST, ISO ain't assisting much as well, although we're starting to see ISO getting 'cybersecurity' out there in their 'new' standards. I guess ENISA leads the pack in interrogating 'cybersecurity'. With all of these, HR get's into the loop with improperly or unstructured job roles, and recruiters run amok sourcing fit-for-use candidates; at least HR and recruiter can at least get fit-for-purpose candidates!.
Thanks for the comments here. It should assist people in starting to understand what is it to say cybersecurity. Indeed, it is, or it has become, an umbrella word for all things security that bothers on 'cyber' or 'digital'L Computer security, IT security, IT/IS systems security, IoT/industrial security, good 'ol information security.
We can discuss all of these, possibly in the technology thread. Let's come back to life in the UK smiley cheesy smiley

Hi everyone, I got a conditional offer to study MSc Business analytics at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Please I will like to know what Aberdeen is like in terms of job opportunities. Thank you in anticipation.

As a current offer holder too but yet to get to Aberdeen myself, I learnt the school is quite demanding in terms of study hours. Meaning, you may not have good time to work, and job opportunities in the city aren't as much as in cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow.

If you are going with your partner who can work full time to support you, then you may not have to worry. But try to pay at least 50% of your deposit.

Do you need to go to any bank when it's time for disbursement or they will deduct themselves?

When I got to the disbursement stage, I downloaded the form online, printed it and went to bank with a letter of authorisation to debit, a copy of passport and other supporting documents which was uploaded on the Trade Portal.
