IBADAN – DISSATISFIED with its unchallenged bombing activities in the North, Boko Haram has threatened to extend the reign of terror to southern parts of the country. Leaders of the sect said yesterday that their radar was now on University of Ibadan (UI), University of Benin (UNIBEN) and 18 other universities, which they said they would bomb between yesterday (September 12) and September 17. Boko Haram sent an e-mail last Thursday to the mail box of UNIBEN Registrar, notifying the institution of its resolve to bomb the university as part of its agenda to stop western education in the country. Last week, there was a bomb scare at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa. In the purported e-mail, the Islamic Sect gave September 12 to 17 as the target date to detonate bombs at the higher institution, warning that the message was “not a threat, but a notification which must be strictly adhered to.” The sect declared that it had listed University of Benin alongside 19 other universities where it planned to explode bombs within the stipulated period it gave, saying “Western education must stop in Nigeria. May Allah bless us.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/boko-haram-threatens-to-bomb-ui-uniben-18-others/

Nollywood actress Stephanie Okereke has landed an ambassadorial deal with Japanese Corporation ‘Kaneka’, makers of ‘Kanekalon’ hair fibre. Okereke’s deal, we gathered, will primarily be to promote the company’s product and participating in its marketing campaigns. stephanie As contained in a release, her responsibilities will include being part of Kanekalon’s Brand Building campaign, Kanekalon ‘Salon Storm’ Activation, Kanekalon ‘Night of a Thousand Braids’ event and other brand promotional activities. Apparently the deal is finalized, as the actress’ television commercial for Kanekalon is already running on TV stations across the country. The Marketing Manager, Kanekalon Division for Kaneka Corporation, Hideaki Nakamura noted that Kaneka’s decision to sign an ambassador is the company’s commitment to promote the African woman and more so, to expand its scope in Nigeria. Nakamura added; “the deal with Stephanie is consistent with Kaneka’s policy of using the best talents everywhere the company has presence, to promote our product and Stephanie came highly recommended in this area.” Speaking on the deal Ms Okereke promised live up to her billing and use the platform to preach and stipulate the African woman outlook. “The African woman is legendary for her beauty and her strength, her style and grace; she is an epitome of beauty, and unmatched quality and a style icon. All this I hope to promote as Kanekalon ambassador,” she assured. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/stephanie-okereke-hits-goldmine/

Following intelligence reports indicating that Boko Haram suicide bombers have been sent to unleash bomb attacks on military formations, including the Defence headquarters of the armed forces, military personnel have been put on alert with the Defence headquarters in Abuja, now a no go area. It has been gathered that the Armed Forces have received intelligence report which shows that the ‘boat house’ in particular, housing the DHQ, AHQ, NHQ and Air Force headquarters, was a primary target by the group to seek revenge for the devastating blows the military has inflicted on the group since the constitution of the Special Task Force in Maiduguri. To checkmate the threat or any eventuality, Vanguard gathered, that the armed forces have put in place additional security measures. Vanguard was told that the armed forces was not taking the threat lightly because of the bombings of the Police headquarters and the UN house barely few weeks ago hence the restriction of movement into and out of military formations, as well as the Defence headquarters. Consequently, the Directors of Intelligence at headquarters Nigeria Army, DMI, Naval intelligence, DNI, and Air Force intelligence, DAI, are now personally coordinating security arrangements at the Defence headquarters supervised by a Major General. As a result of the stringent security measures, anybody coming to the Defence Headquarters must be on appointment from a senior military officer while the road directly opposite the gate of the Defence headquarters has been blocked by military vehicles with fierce looking armed soldiers manning them. Furthermore, Vanguard gathered that the military high command has consequently advised military officers within the complex to be wary of the type of visitors they invite into the complex while a directive for additional security equipment to check vehicles including that of military personnel have been deployed for use. A top source at the Defence headquarters explained that the military is seen as the last hope of every Nigerian in this matter, adding that once this place is attacked the country is in trouble and that is why additional security measures are being put in place. It was gathered that Boko Haram members have been boasting that since they have succeeded in bombing the police headquarters and the United Nations building in Abuja, there is nothing preventing them from bombing the Defence headquarters. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/boko-haram-military-beefs-up-security-in-defence-hqtrs-barracks/

When i gained my admission into an institution some years back, my parent warned me not 2 return home with nothing less than 2(1). But gone are those days when graduates will be honoured n glorified without considering thier honours. A friend of mine was humiliated some days back with his 2(2) paper, when a minister who wanted to help him in securing a job lambasted him that he has just wasted 4 good years. Then i thought to myself that Wole soyinka is a living witness to this issue of graduands honour. Are second class lower still relevant and recognised in this Naija? |
