PoliticsRe: What Do We Get To Enjoy As Nigerians? by CROWE: 1:56am On Feb 06, 2013
Of course not, that is is exactly what my point is. We should not be wasting money on providing AFCON when that is the private sectors responsibility especially as the Federal Government has so many things it has to take care of. The kind of infrastructure investment required in Nigeria is so massive that the federal government even if they became diligent overnight would still not be able to fund the project and this is an issue of paramount and immediate importance then someone is talking about paying for AFCON, wtf are HiTV and AIT there for?

the ministry of info. in Ghana few years ago launched 14 free satellite hosted foreign and local channels not just for Ghanians but the whole of west Africa,(multi tv) mind you that most of those channels are either live streams they spend money to broadcast or pre paid channels.

Yes and they have denied somebody the chance to start up a tele business, no wonder so many Ghanaian's are starving, the governments takes away their options vis-à-vis doing business, kinda like China where the government runs everything and 700 million people are starving

Now what is the ministry of Info. in the most populous black nation in the world doing with their budget?
if you cant answer that then you are a stark m0r0n with inferiority complex.

Obviously other things that are relevant to being a FEDERAL REPUBLIC as opposed to a communist republic. I have been accused of many things but having an inferiority complex is not one of them ^_^

Ghana is managing to export about 48,000bbls of crude daily with a tiny population and you think your Govt is doing you a a favor with corruption?

The implication being that all Ghanaian's work on these refineries? Otherwise what does the nations population have to do with anything?

are you aware that most pay tV channels in Europe and America are viewed free in the middle east courtesy of their Govt? same oil money like Nigeria?

Look at my first response and don't worry when oil looses its luster they will revert to being barren deserts because they never bothered to learn to be self sustaining and diverse. Any dip in oil prices greatly affects their economies and if that is what you want you can always relocate there as opposed to countries like Germany that were completely unaffected by the recession and have actually been growing in spite of it

truth is; most Nigerians have not traveled out to understand how real Govt work, we have subconsciously set mediocrity as a standard.

I am not in Nigeria as I type this and I haven't been for the past five years, I have read up on governments and ruling systems, wars, management of today and general world history for as far back as the internet allows so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

most Saudi Arabian and Libyan citizens have never worked in their life courtesy of oil money, yet Our Niger deltans, custodians of Nigeria's oil wealth are up in arms for a mere 13% that cant go round.

At a GDP per capita of 5700 USD most Libyans are considerably poor people and if you want to be lazy you can always relocate there. Also Libya has a population of 5 million, such a population can easily be serviced with very little oil, Nigeria at 160 million cannot be handled by the government, the people need to drive the economy, Saudi Arabia is like Lybia albeit to a lesser extent and by Western Standards even the Saudi Arabians with their GDP per capita of 26,000 USD aren't very well off, they are more like Portugal and Greece at 22,000 USD and 24000 USD respectively who Ironically are begging Germans for money but you can always look to Saudi Arabia as your role model.

you guys are shameless

Better shameless than easily impressionable like you are, consider all sides and consequences of things before buying into it like sheep.

We agree that Nigeria is fugged up but there is a place where a country like Nigeria must be headed, we are too big to be a federal welfare state like Libya, Botswana and Qatar, It is much easier and much more efficient for Nigeria to aim to be like South Korea, Japan, Germany and The US, it seems a lofty goal but with Nigerians population and resources it is the most effective way. Government encourages, protects and supplies all that the people need to fly by themselves, it cannot work otherwise, there is far too much for it to micromanage the way the UAE and previously mentioned countries do, we are not setup like them.

PoliticsRe: Fashola Opposes Geo-political Zones, Autonomy For Councils by CROWE: 6:20am On Feb 05, 2013
Prof Corruption: There is nothing like autonomy for local governments. There is a clear difference between tiers of government and recognized federating units. Let each state/region be a true federating unit and based on their individual separate constitutions design the LG system suitable for them. State A may prefer a parliamentary LG while B a presidential. State C may even make traditional ruler automatic head of its councils. Let each state determines the structure that best suits its idiosyncrasies.
That's absurd, get your head out of your ars.
PoliticsRe: Fashola Opposes Geo-political Zones, Autonomy For Councils by CROWE: 3:55am On Feb 05, 2013
He also opposed the inclusion of geo-political zones in the constitution, explaining that recognition of a body in a constitution “presupposes that it will have a definite purpose or responsibility and its composition, leadership and administrative structure will have to be defined.

“Since the geo-political zones are not intended to be regional governments, their inclusion in the constitution may cause needless confusion as to their status or significance. Section 14(3)is comprehensive enough to reflect the federal character of the country and the need to promote national unity,” he said.

This is gold, Fashiola is one of the few people in Nigeria who seem to say well thought out things. It would be in the best interest of all of us if we began to forget that we are Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba and any law that seeks to make permanent our divisions is bad for the Nation.

PoliticsInvestors Bet On Nigeria With N800bn Sealed Deals In Jan by CROWE(op): 5:30am On Feb 04, 2013
BusinessDayOnline: Foreign investments in Nigeria, Africa’s second largest economy, reached a record N800 billion ($5.2 bn) in January 2013 as prominent corporations from the United States of America, Canada, The Netherlands and Turkey increased their investment stakes in the country, in a pace never seen before.

The scale of the net inflows, about 207 percent growth above what flowed in the same period last year, highlights the revival in investor confidence in Nigeria’s economic reforms.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) figures for Q3, 2012, showed a total of $1.4 billion was injected into the economy through Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) while $4.6 billion came in through portfolio investments, with another $4.7 billion invested in the capital market, a far cry from what flowed in this year.

The current inflows and investment commitments with different gestation periods, focus on infrastructure development, construction of power plants for the enhancement of electricity generation, mining, healthcare, agriculture and agro-allied sectors of the Nigerian economy, areas where there have been concerted efforts to turn things around.

The investments into these sectors in the month, reflected positively also in the capital market, as investors (local and foreign) saw need to key into the opportunities in the Nigerian equities, which achieved a four-year high last weekend.

The response is underscored by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) $50 million Naira-denominated bond issued in the period.

Having been endorsed by the Investment Supervision Department of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), the IFC’s investment in the country has surged to $1.1 billion, which is the largest portfolio in Africa and eighth-largest globally.

“The rally underscores the rising confidence in the country as a project and buy-in by investors who easily smell good deals,” analysts told BusinessDay weekend.

BusinessDay Research and Intelligence Unit (BRIU) analysed the future effect on the value chain.

“New companies will emerge to service the investments and existing companies will upgrade skills. Hubs are forming as the investments are spread across the country. There will be new jobs and job requirements and there will be spill-over to local suppliers as well.”

General Electric, the leading global player in turbine technology, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Government of Nigeria to invest about $1 billion (N157bn) in the next five years in manufacturing, assembly and training, in a firm located in Calabar, Cross River State. Initial investment will be $250 million and it is expected to rise to $1 billion over the duration of the agreement.

Other deals sealed by GE last month include the $500 million 450 megawatts Geometric Power Plant in Abia State, as well as with Transcorp plc, in order to increase power generation to 650 megawatts at Ughelli Power Plant in Delta State. Tony Elumelu, chairman of Trancorp Plc and Jeff Immelt, global chairman and CEO, GE graced the occasion when the deal was signed.

In another development, the African Finance Corporation (AFC) and FMO of The Netherlands (Entrepreneurial Development Bank) reached an accord to promote project development facility in the country. “The Facility will make early stage investments in projects under development, pre-financial close, in the infrastructure sector across sub-Saharan Africa.

The $15 million facility will fund early-stage equity investments in projects under development by AFC, and third party developers, including those referred to the Facility by FMO. The Facility will be managed by AFC and will typically fund technical advisory services and third party expenses”, information obtained from the official website of FMO revealed.

The month of January 2013 also witnessed the injection of $800 million (N126 bn) by the African Development Bank (AfDB) into the Nigerian economy. The breakdown shows that Eleme Fertilizer and Chemical Company got $100 million while the Bank of Industry (BoI) and Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) received $700 million. The former loan is meant to boost fertilizer production, just as the latter will enhance the capacity of BoI and NEXIM to promote non-oil export.

Many other firms and financial institutions yet to berth, are fast queuing. One such, is the Nigeria-Canadian Bi-National Commission (NCBNC) which announced that Canadian firms are interested in the country’s mining activities, rail, road, aviation, as well as in agriculture, even as they recognized the need to encourage investment in Information and Communications. Consequently, they have promised to increase their trade with Nigeria up to $6 billion by 2015.

Samsung is looking to build a manufacturing plant in the country.

Back home, the FG has set aside $400 million for the trans-Saharan gas pipeline. With specific focus on the Calabar-Ajaokota-Kano pipeline, the speedy completion of this pipeline will enhance the operation of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project. Also, Stanbic IBTC and Keystone Bank will provide N5.6 billion for the Agbekoya (Farmers Association) in order to boost food production and processing.

In addition, Standard Chartered Private Equity and Ashmore acquired a stake in GZI which is an aluminum manufacturing plant based in Ogun State. Similarly, Florence Nightingale Group, one of Turkey’s best healthcare providers, will invest about $100 million in healthcare service delivery before the end of Q1, 2013.

China is an imperialist nation that denies people basic human rights, if you oppose the government you get shipped off to labor camps, they support the North Korean government, a government that abuses and oppresses its own people, do you know that South Korean women are taller than North Korean men? These are people of the same race, malnutrition has stunted the entire country. The people of Syria were so oppressed that they revolted yet China is in support of that government that oppresses them, that is the reason the UN cannot go in and save the people. they seek to breach Hong Kong and Taiwan's Sovereignty because the people are not allowed to be free? China is an oppressive and Imperialist state that does not care about humanity, they demand that Japan apologize for their acts of imperialism in the early 20th century against China while enslaving Tibet, Nigeria's relationship with China is business and it should remain that way. Emulating Commie nations? gimme a break we want to emulate The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Germany, countries that excel at human and world development.

Where is the work?

When Japan tried to industrialize it took them 30 years to achieve it and they had an emperor with absolute power, someone who could not be opposed i.e The PIB would have passed with zero opposition. Jonathan on the oother hannd is fighting many vested interested in the status quo, anybody who expects Nigeria to show considerable changes within the little time he has been in office is absurd. I am tired of all the "we will, we will" as well but to yell he is a bad or incompetent president, I know enough to not say that.

where are the haters?

I am not going to dignify that with an answer. My only problem with Jonathan's achievements other than I don't like the pace of progress which is a selfish issue by the way is the university bit. unless Nigerians universities are overcrowded the better thing to do would be to improve the standard of our current ones, not build more, QUALITY over quantity.

All of Nigeria's previous governments have been horrible and it is quite naive to expect that one guy will just come in and change all that so I decided to focus on the good, GEJ can steal all the money he wants just as long as he puts the work required to help Nigeria grow even if only half heartedly, God knows no one before him ever really did anything. The GDP per capita in Nigeria is about 2000 USD, we are some of the poorest people in the world and that is so sad. If GEJ gives us non stop electricity this term then he would have in a single bout been Nigeria's best president ever because it would mean SMEs would be able to thrive better and the standard of living would double, more than anyone else can say. He seems to be doing well, stop nit picking, talking about his grammatical boo boos and his many fails, if there seems to be but a single thing good about him then we have been blessed because in the past we have been cursed with the most illiterate and unpatriotic of leaders, I am personally liking Jonathan, he is making many committees but bothering with discovery and experts helps.

This is not to say I am OK with him stealing money per se but rather than take away from time he may spend doing one good thing for Nigeria or another why don't you go and investigate where the money has gone or shut up.

There's so much talk about power plants being built, how many megawatts they will produce, some being refitted to operate at maximum capacity but nobody ever gives us a more comprehensive idea so I am here to ask finally. How many power plants are there in Nigeria and what is their generation capacity and more importantly how many are being built, when can we roughly expect them to be completed? And the same for those that are still planned. We are tired of hearing scarce and incomplete information, we want a more comprehensive write up so we can get a better picture of where GEJ is at, he should not just tell us that he will produce 10k MW by 2014 we want to know where it will come from, anybody with the info is welcome to share with the rest of us, thx

These are informed predictions, everything is going horribly wrong in Nigeria so it is logical to expect that they will continue to do so, predicting that it will publicly is a way to convince stupid people of your talents. If anybody had hinted strongly at the whale that landed in Lagos then we'd have someone to seriously consider. Jonathan is talking about getting electricity to near minimum requirements this year, if he pulls that off then the Nigerian economy will boom in 2014, those are the type of things they predict, then they predict the death of people, which in an unstable country like Nigeria is very likely, they tend to attach the necessity of prayers to a few of them so they have the excuse that it did not happen because they prayed.

South west, South south, South east, North, Islam, Christianity, Fulani, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Ijaw.

There are more things dividing us than there are uniting us, we share nothing really, no goals, no hopes. The very primary objective of any Nigerian government should be to encourage the people to feel truly Nigerian, something that we do not do. Yugoslavia, the Austrian Empire, Great Britain, history has shown us that being in one nation is not enough, we need to find common ground within that nation otherwise this crap is hopeless and we best be done with it.

noblezone: Any student of the Bible will know that the Book is divided into two:
the Old Testament (An eye for an eye) and the New Testament (rather than revenging turn the other cheek).

If the Bible were to be just the old testament, I won't be here typing this and asking for peace.

The crusaders carried out their acts in the dark ages! This is 2013 and not 1513.
Those carrying out these killings are painting Islam black in this dispensation.

Check all over the world today, where does violence take place in the Name of God, and Islam is not involved?

As for educating the North, bare in mind that as at now, BOKO is HARAM!
You will start by closing most of their Islamic schools because that is where the suicide bombers are recruited.

The national conference will not only address technical issues, it will also address religion.
When a Christian turn to Islam, we don't make it an issue, but when but when a moslem turns to Christianity, his blood is shed.

One major fact we need to understand is this: this problem will never be solved with weapons. Kill them all, then another set will arise, then you kill again? When will the circle of blood end?
Note that when I said educate them I also included governors and religious figures, I am obviously not just talking about math and chemistry, I thought that was obvious when I said not just institutional (school) but social (ideology) education. You have to understand that Jews don't attend to the new testament yet they don't go around mass murdering people, if not that Israel is surrounded by Muslim states they won't be so belligerent, they don't preach that despite the fact they hold onto the old testament and are still waiting for their messiah. It is because their ideals and understanding of the world has evolved past the medieval times, refusing the absorb anything new Muslims have not evolved, it is the way the people think and not the religion, that is what we mush change.

Northern Nigeria has long been influenced by the Islamic world and they take their queues from them, we must break these Islamic schools to separate them from the Islamic world and reeducate them on tolerance and humanity, we are sort of saying the same thing. Obviously a sort of meeting (national conference) needs to be held to address this, I just don't agree that the religion is at fault, France has many Muslims and yet they don't go around killing people. In other words we need to recolonize the north and give them a more favorable view on the world.
PoliticsRe: Cnn Interview: Jonathan Lacks Understanding- Sanni by CROWE: 11:16am On Jan 26, 2013
Ya, Just like how the CHRISTIAN crusaders problem was embedded in the pages of the bible right? I personally know a few Muslims, they all went to school and they are no more likely than I am to go on a killing spree. The Bible has its moments when it comes to violence and what can be construed as hate speech too and I don't quit know what you mean by national conference since you blame our situation on something than technically cannot be fixed, what is the national conference suppose to address exactly?

Educated people who know all the beauties of the world will have no time to go get themselves killed, with the poverty and illiteracy in the north there is nothing to live for or by and all you really have is religion, this is how Christianity and Islam spread, by promising the poor and hopeless a better afterlife and giving them hope. If you educate these people, give them options and reasons to live they will begin to preoccupy themselves less with what they need to do to guarantee a better afterlife.
PoliticsRe: Cnn Interview: Jonathan Lacks Understanding- Sanni by CROWE: 9:33am On Jan 26, 2013
As I've said, the problem in the north is education, not just institutional but social. Islamic extremism generally only occupies the gullible mind, it is very hard for an exposed human being to succumb to terrorism. Northern Governors and religious figures need to get their propaganda machine in gear and let the northerners know that education has nothing to do with the devil, mass murder is wrong, basically a big propaganda campaign to influence them into society, they are still primitive and civilization has left them behind that is why they behave like the Crusaders and Jihadists of centuries long past, in that sense its not really their fault.
