PoliticsCourt Of Appeal, Asaba To Be Commissioned Today. by Ctorch(op): 11:07am On Feb 03, 2020
COURT OF APPEAL, ASABA TO BE COMMISSIONED TODAY.
Once again, special thanks to the Delta State govt and of course, more importantly to Asaba community for making this a possibility.
Now ,there will be no need for Deltans travelling to Benin city for Appeal court hearing.
For those who may not know, the court of appeal is situate at the Maryam Babangida center for women development by Maryam Babangida Way, Asaba.
Meanwhile, the call on the state govt to erect a statue of the late Nigerian first lady and a water fountain at the entrance of the Maryam Babangida Way from the Benin/Onitsha expressway has intensified. It is hoped that the state govt in line with it's beautification agenda for the state capital will see the need to not only beautify the city but honour the late Nigerian first lady with such a statue.

PoliticsInsecurity: CAN Rally Has A Political Undertone - MUSWEN, MURIC by Ctorch(op): 6:08am On Feb 03, 2020
The Executive Secretary of the Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN), Prof Muslih Yahya and Director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) Prof Is-haq Lakin Akintola have berated the organisers of the Christians rally, saying it has political undertone.

Prof Yahya warned the leadership of Christians in the country to stop acting as opposition to the Federal government.

“They are politicising the insecurity issue on one part and also diving the nation along religious line. This is unhealthy for our nation. That rally is more political than religious. Christian leaders behave more like opposition than religious people. It looks like they have an agenda that is different from protesting over the security issues. There is no sincerity in the rally,” he said.

According to him, religious leaders have ways of reaching out to the government instead of doing it through a rally.

The rally, he said, was not the way to go about the issue.

“I believe there is a hidden agenda underneath. It has a political undertone. This is calling a dog a bad name in order to hang it. The rally organisers are not sincere. We need to be careful,” Prof Yahya said.

Prof Akintola said the Christian leaders are exaggerating the issue and trying to discredit the government.

He said: “There is an orchestrated attempt to de-market the government. Our Christian neighbours, particularly their leaders are giving the impression that the government is not doing anything. That is not fair. Insecurity was worst six years ago before Muhammadu Buhari’s administration came on board. The Christians are exaggerating the issue. There is another agenda to it.

“The organisers of the rally are not objective and it is ungodly. When a government performs, you need to credit it. When the government does not perform, you can speak up but in my own opinion, this government is addressing the issue of insecurity squarely unlike previous administrations. We are not saying the situation is perfect but we should not exaggerate and overblown the situation. We are scaring the citizenry and the Christian leadership should act responsibly.

“There is no cause for alarm; the kind of alarm they are raising does not call for it…I don’t know where that (rally) leads to. Rallying against insecurity does not stop criminals. Let the Christian leaders and their Muslim counterparts go back to their churches and mosques to speak to their congregation. Those who kidnap, rob are either from the church or the mosque but if their messages sink to their congregation, the rate of crime will reduce.

“Even when they rally and they ask their people to join them, the robbers among them will also join the rally. Rallies don’t stop crime… It is enough to tell the government to step up the fight against security, to step up the funding of security agencies but to hold rallies against insecurity means holding a rally against the government.”

PoliticsSalihu Kadiri: Amotekun Targeted At Fulani Herders — Sarkin Fulani by Ctorch(op): 9:31pm On Jan 29, 2020
Ibadan – Sarkin Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Salihu Kadiri, has declared that the Fulani people in the South West are not in support of the composition of the South West joint security outfit, ‘Operation Amotekun’.

Kadiri, who stated this during a chat with journalists at the inauguration of the newly elected Oyo State NUJ Exco held at the Jogor Centre, Ibadan, said with its present composition, Amotekun looked sectional and against Fulani herders.

The Seriki Fulani declared that as it was presently constituted, Amotekun was one-sided and set up against the Fulani herders, adding that the security outfit needed to be put in place properly.

Kadiri stressed that there was the need for the South West governors to, without wasting time, ensure the inclusion of the Fulani and other ethnic militia in the region among those to be recruited for Amotekun.

He maintained that if truly ‘Operation Amotekun’ was for the security of people in the South West, the composition must be for all and not for only Yoruba militia groups like the OPC, Agbekoya, and others.

“For now, we, the Fulani in the South West, are not in support of ‘Operation Amotekun’. With its present composition, Amotekun looks more sectional, it looks as if it was meant to fight the Fulani herders who the farmers are accusing of using their cows to destroy their farms. That is the truth,” he said.

The Seriki Fulani pointed out that there were Fulani vigilante groups across the South West that had all it would take to be among the groups that could be co-opted into the joint South West security outfit.

Accusing the South West governors of being too hasty with the establishment of ‘Operation Amotekun’, the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State said if Fulani vigilante groups were recruited into Amotekun, they would be in the best position to monitor the herders and their activities, as well as assist in curbing crimes in their various localities.

PoliticsFani Kayode Reacts As Senator Abaribe Tells Buhari To Resign by Ctorch(op): 7:00pm On Jan 29, 2020
Former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has showered praise on the senator representing Abia South in the National Assembly, Enyinnaya Abaribe over his recent statement on the State of the Nation.
Kayode was reacting following Abaribe’s call that President Muhammadu Buhari should resign in what he regards as the inability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government to address the security challenges in the country.
Abaribe stated this on Wednesday on the floor of the Senate during a debate on insecurity in the country.
He said: “Nigeria didn’t elect the IGP. We didn’t elect other service chiefs. We elected the APC government in 2015. We are asking this government to resign because it can no longer perform its role.”
Reacting over the lawmaker’s call, Fani-Kayode commended Abaribe for having such courage to call for the President's resignation.
I commend my friend, brother & in-law, Sen. Abaribe, for having the courage to call for the resignation of President Buhari. A President that refuses to protect his people from killer herdsmen & bloodthirsty terrorists ought to not only resign but also bury his head in shame”, Kayode wrote on twitter.

PoliticsThe Nation Newspaper And The Name Of Wike by Ctorch(op): 7:23am On Jan 28, 2020
There is no denying the fact that The Nation Newspaper is owned by an APC leader.  It is also a known fact that the ownership of a medium affects its house style and news coverage patterns. However, it is embarrassing that The Nation Newspaper and its management have allowed a disgruntled APC Member to serve as its correspondent in Rivers State.
I am surprised that The Nation is not embarrassed by the condescending reports that their correspondent in Rivers State churn out on regularly , all in the bid to link Governor Wike to everything that happens in their political party.
I woke up on Saturday (25th January,  2020)  to see The Nation Newspaper screamer on the front page: “Rivers APC Hits Wike”, with a rider that the Rivers State Governor was lobbying to join the party since he can’t take over PDP . For the Editors of The Nation, whenever Governor Wike is mentioned,  the bar is relegated and unprofessional actions take over.
Nationwide, everyone is aware that the APC is on life support in Rivers State.  For over four years,  there has been no APC and there has been no Rivers APC leadership. It has been a case of empty drums making noise to be heard. Not for any Electoral Reasons.
If there is anything like APC in Rivers State,  it exists in the fertile imagination of The Nation Newspaper and their APC Ambassador detailed  to churn out fictional reports against Rivers State and the State Governor.
Otherwise,  how would The Nation Newspaper allow political vindictiveness propel  it into elevating beer parlour talk into newspaper report? Why would editorial due diligence be sacrificed by The Nation Newspaper simply because they want to mention the name of Governor Wike in their unending political crisis? If they are now ashamed of being associated with their self-inflicted political disaster,  then they should seek help.
It is disheartening that The Nation Newspaper continues to rehash the same concocted face-saving allegation that the failed immediate past Rivers State Governor,  Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi made at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in the presence of President Muhammadu Buhari before the last General Elections.
This concocted story aimed at diverting attention from the failure of Rivers APC did not save the AAC/APC/ARMY/FSARS Alliance from total defeat during the 2019 General elections.
One wonders who The Nation Newspaper is referring to when it called Rivers APC? In the eyes of the law, no such party exists from Ward to the State level as far as Rivers State is concerned.  Yes, there are  several factions and clubs within the APC in Rivers State that are jostling for Recognition,  but none  truly exists.
It  smacks of editorial recklessness and ineptitude to throw up the name of Governor Wike,  in a struggle amongst several weakened APC associations in Rivers State.
It is tantamount to administering ‘panadol’ on Governor Wike,  when the different factions of Rivers APC are suffering from prolonged headache. As associates of Rivers APC and the faction of the Minister of Transportation,  The Nation Newspaper should restrict its ‘medicinal ‘ benevolence to members of their association that subscribe to lies, deception,  divisiveness and under-development.
I am surprised that the Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper is yet to view Rivers State as a place where it can write on the huge developmental projects of Governor Wike.  I am shocked that the Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper still views Rivers State from commercial lenses of churning out lies on Governor Wike to sell extra copies of the paper.
Having supported different political parties since 2014 to spread falsehood and lies against Governor Wike and Rivers State,  it is high time The Nation Newspaper changed its technique to a more productive and truthful approach.  Rivers people are fully in support of their Governor and they are never be deceived by half baked lies.
This is not a time to play the Ostrich.  The Nation Newspaper and her associates in the different camps of APC must start rebuilding their ailing political party.  Rivers APC cannot be revived on the altar of lies and irresponsible propaganda. If propaganda was enough, Rivers APC would have won all elections since 2015.
Governor Wike has been magnanimous to the ailing opposition,  despite their love for mischief and injurious falsehood.
On 21st February, 2019, Governor  Wike  called on the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to accept the reality that their party will not be on the ballot for the 2019 General elections  in the state.
Governor Wike urged the leaders of Rivers APC  to accept the judgment of the Supreme Court  as the will of God, saying that nobody can resurrect a dead horse.
The governor made the call   in a State broadcast on the rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections coming up on Saturday, 23rd  February, 2019.
The governor said: “Truth be told, the Supreme Court has spoken. INEC has confirmed. It is the will of God and there is nothing anybody can do to return the APC to the ballot for the 2019 general elections in Rivers State.
”  But this, I believe, is not the end of life for the APC in Rivers State. There is always another day and as political leaders, we must have the courage to accept the reality, know when to stop fighting for nothing and tell our followers the simple truth, even if it may sound bitter. I would therefore advice my brothers in the APC to endeavor to put their house in order, allow the prevailing peace to continue and prepare for 2023″.
Beyond projecting injurious falsehood,  has The Nation Newspaper or her APC Correspondent or associates ever focused on the exclusion of Rivers State from the allocation and implementation of Federal Projects since 2015? Are they pretending not to know that almost all developmental projects in Rivers State since 2015 have been the exclusive work of Governor Wike?
Elections are over and this is the time for governance.  The Nation Newspaper cannot subject Rivers State to a perpetual condition of needless politicking.  Rivers APC is not in Government and they have ample time on their hands to lie against each other.  The Nation Newspaper should not drag Governor Wike into this endless mess of Rivers APC’s unnecessary intra-party rivalry.
There should be a conscious effort to transit from campaign mode to governance mode. Sponsoring media campaigns of calumny will not resolve the deep-seated challenges facing the ailing Rivers APC. Calling Governor Wike names can only bring momentary pleasure,  which will disappear after the press conference or interview session.
Since that ill-fated press conference by the Minister’s Rivers APC faction,  has the crisis disappeared?  Since the trending of that  misleading Information circulated by The Nation Newspaper , the Rivers APC crisis has worsened.  At this juncture,  we may require the services of National Population Commission to ascertain the number of factions that exist in Rivers APC.
In all of this, one fact is constant.  Governor Wike’s connection to Rivers people is getting even stronger. He is busy fulfilling his campaign promises to Rivers people and that is what matters to them.

PoliticsOsinbajo Laments Nigeria’s Failure To Leverage On Biafra Technology by Ctorch(op): 8:27pm On Jan 27, 2020
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo Monday lamented the inability of Nigeria to leverage on the engineering and technological ingenuity that emanated from the defunct Republic of Biafra during the civil war.
He expressed the regret at a town hall meeting at the National Museum, Umuahia organised by the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Nigeria civil war.
The vice-president noted that there was an attempt to harness the Biafra technology by establishing the Project Development Agency (PRODA), Enugu to replicate and improve on the Biafra technological feats exhibited during the war.
However, he said that the objective was not achieved but did not explain the reasons why PRODA was allowed to collapse.
Prof. Osinbajo, who was accompanied to the War Museum by the host governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma and Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Uche Ogah, harped on the need to forge national unity and cohesion.
He urged Nigerians “to discard the bitterness of the past and look forward to a united Nigeria”, adding that “no human relationship is perfect and that the ties that bind us has survived intense disagreements”.
In his address, Governor Ikpeazu reminded the federal authorities that many areas in the South-east zone were subjected to intense bombardments thereby wrecking the infrastructure and devastating the environment.
He called on the federal government to pay particular attention to the development of infrastructure in the South-east in the spirit of genuine reconciliation.
Ikpeazu regretted that 50 years after the end of the civil war, Nigeria was still struggling with reconciliation, reconstruction and attainment of nationhood, adding that Nigeria should emulate Rwanda, which emerged stronger after the sad experience of genocide.
The founder of the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development, Senator Ken Nnamani, earlier in his welcome address, called on leaders to treat every part of Nigeria with fairness and not to sow seeds of discord

PoliticsAgain Frederick Forsyth Attacks Britain: You Committed Crimes Against Igbo. by Ctorch(op):
Frederick McCarthy Forsyth, the English journalist and author will be 82 this year. He was born on 25 August 1938. At such age when a man is inching closer to his grave or Maker, his conscience becomes sharper, his propensity for remorse greater. He tends to make all crooked ways straight; he confesses his sins or does so vicariously- that is, on behalf of his clan or community or country.
That is exactly what Frederick Forsyth has done, blaming his country, Britain, for its bias against the Igbo during the Nigeria-Biafra war that spanned three years, 1967 to 1970. Another Briton who became contrite was Harold Smith, a colonial officer in Nigeria who admitted that Britain deliberately made the North to dominate the South here in all ramifications, using well choreographed policies of demography, appointments and politics.
Forsyth is a household name in the Commonwealth countries for thrillers such as The Day of the Jackal, The Odessa File, The Fourth Protocol, The Dogs of War, The Devil’s Alternative, The Fist of God, Icon, The Veteran, Avenger, The Afghan, The Cobra and The Kill List, The Biafra Story and others.
It was when he covered the war in Nigeria as a BBC correspondent that he the bias of Britain became clear to him. He revealed this in a recent article in The Guardian of London: “Buried for 50 years: Britain’s shameful role in the Biafran war.”
It was for this reason that the writer walked away from the BBC, narrating
“Six months later, in February 1968, fed up with the slavishness of the BBC to Whitehall, I walked out and flew back to west Africa. Ojukwu roared with laughter and allowed me to stay. My condition was that, having rejected British propaganda, I would not publish his either. He agreed.”

In the article, Forsyth reveals the sins of Britain: “I arrived in the Biafra capital of Enugu on the third day of the war. In London I had been copiously briefed by Gerald Watrous, head of the BBC’s West Africa Service. What I did not know was that he was the obedient servant of the government’s Commonwealth Relations Office (CRO), which believed every word of its high commissioner in Lagos, David Hunt. It took two days in Enugu to realise that everything I had been told was utter garbage.
“I had been briefed that the brilliant Nigerian army would suppress the rebellion in two weeks, four at the most. Fortunately the deputy high commissioner in Enugu, Jim Parker, told me what was really happening. It became clear that the rubbish believed by the CRO and the BBC stemmed from our high commissioner in Lagos. A racist and a snob, Hunt expected Africans to leap to attention when he entered the room – which Gowon did. At their single prewar meeting Ojukwu did not. Hunt loathed him at once.
“My brief was to report the all-conquering march of the Nigerian army. It did not happen. Naively, I filed this. When my report was broadcast our high commissioner complained to the CRO in London, who passed it on to the BBC – which accused me of pro-rebel bias and recalled me to London.
“What is truly shameful is that this was not done by savages but aided and assisted at every stage by Oxbridge-educated British mandarins. Why? Did they love the corruption-riven, dictator-prone Nigeria? No. From start to finish, it was to cover up that the UK’s assessment of the Nigerian situation was an enormous judgmental screw-up. And, worse: with neutrality and diplomacy from London it could all have been avoided.”
Like Forsyth, Harold Smith, an accomplice confessed (as quoted in thenigerianvoice:
“Despite seeing vast land with no human but cattle in the north, we still gave the north 55 million instead of 32 million. This was to be used to maintain their majority votes and future power bid. The West without Lagos was the most populous in Nigeria at the time but we ignored that. We seriously encouraged the north to go the military. We believed that the south may attend western education, but future leaders will always come from military background. Their traditional rulers were made influential and super human. The northerners were given accelerated promotions both in the military and civil service to justify their superiority over south. Everything was to work against the south. We truncated their good plan for their future. ‘I was very sorry for the A.G.: It was a great party too much for African standard. We planned to destroy Awolowo and Azikiwe well, the west and the east’. And sowed the seed of discord among them. We tricked Azikiwe into accepting to be president having known that Balewa is the main man with power. Awolowo has to go to jail to cripple his genius plans for a greater Nigeria”

Below is Forsyth’s article on the bias of Britain against the Igbo, entitled:
“Buried for 50 years: Britain’s shameful role in the Biafran war.”
By Frederick Forsyth
It is a good thing to be proud of one’s country, and I am – most of the time. But it would be impossible to scan the centuries of Britain’s history without coming across a few incidents that evoke not pride but shame. Among those I would list are the creation by British officialdom in South Africa of the concentration camp, to persecute the families of Boers. Add to that the Amritsar massacre of 1919 and the Hola camps set up and run during the struggle against Mau Mau.
But there is one truly disgusting policy practised by our officialdom during the lifetime of anyone over 50, and one word will suffice: Biafra.
This referred to the civil war in Nigeria that ended 50 years ago this month. It stemmed from the decision of the people of the eastern region of that already riot-racked country to strike for independence as the Republic of Biafra. As I learned when I got there as a BBC correspondent, the Biafrans, mostly of the Igbo people, had their reasons.
The federal government in Lagos was a brutal military dictatorship that came to power in 1966 in a bloodbath. During and following that coup, the northern and western regions were swept by a pogrom in which thousands of resident Igbo were slaughtered. The federal government lifted not a finger to help. It was led by an affable British-educated colonel, Yakubu Gowon. But he was a puppet. The true rulers were a group of northern Nigerian colonels. The crisis deepened, and in early 1967 eastern Nigeria, harbouring about 1.8 million refugees, sought restitution. A British-organised conference was held in Ghana and a concordat agreed. But Gowon, returning home, was flatly contradicted by the colonels, who tore up his terms and reneged on the lot. In April the Eastern Region formally seceded and on 7 July, the federal government declared war.
Biafra was led by the Eastern Region’s Oxford-educated former military governor, “Emeka” Ojukwu. London, ignoring all evidence that it was Lagos that reneged on the deal, denounced the secession, made no attempt to mediate and declared total support for Nigeria.
I arrived in the Biafra capital of Enugu on the third day of the war.
I had been briefed that the brilliant Nigerian army would suppress the rebellion in two weeks, four at the most.
My brief was to report the all-conquering march of the Nigerian army. It did not happen. Naively, I filed this. When my report was broadcast our high commissioner complained to the CRO in London, who passed it on to the BBC – which accused me of pro-rebel bias and recalled me to London. Six months later, in February 1968, fed up with the slavishness of the BBC to Whitehall, I walked out and flew back to west Africa. Ojukwu roared with laughter and allowed me to stay. My condition was that, having rejected British propaganda, I would not publish his either. He agreed.
But things had changed. British covert interference had become huge. Weapons and ammunition poured in quietly as Whitehall and the Harold Wilson government lied and denied it all. Much enlarged, with fresh weapons and secret advisory teams, the Nigerian army inched across Biafra as the defenders tried to fight back with a few bullets a day. Soviet Ilyushin bombers ranged overhead, dropping 1,000lb bombs on straw villages. But the transformation came in July.
Missionaries had noticed mothers emerging from the deep bush carrying children reduced to living skeletons yet with bloated bellies. Catholic priests recognised the symptoms – kwashiorkor or acute protein deficiency.
That same July the Daily Express cameraman David Cairns ran off a score of rolls of film and took them to London. Back then, the British public had never seen such heartrending images of starved and dying children. When the pictures hit the newsstands the story exploded. There were headlines, questions in the House of Commons, demonstrations, marches.
As the resident guide for foreign news teams I became somewhat overwhelmed. But at last the full secret involvement of the British government started to be exposed and the lies revealed. Wilson came under attack. The story swept Europe then the US. Donations flooded in. The money could buy food – but how to get it there? Around year’s end the extraordinary Joint Church Aid was born.
The World Council of Churches helped to buy some clapped-out freighter aircraft and gained permission from Portugal to use the offshore island São Tomé as a base. Scandinavian pilots and crew, mostly airline pilots, offered to fly without pay. Joint Church Aid was quickly nicknamed Jesus Christ Airlines. And thus came into being the world’s only illegal mercy air bridge.
On a visit to London in spring 1969 I learned the efforts the British establishment will take to cover up its tracks. Every reporter, peer or parliamentarian who had visited Biafra and reported on what he had seen was smeared as a stooge of Biafra – even the utterly honourable John Hunt, leader of the Everest expedition.
Throughout 1969 the relief planes flew through the night, dodging Nigerian MiG fighters, to deliver their life-giving cargoes of reinforced milk powder to a jungle airstrip. From there trucks took the sacks to the missions, the nuns boiled up the nutriments and kept thousands of children alive.

PoliticsAnambra State Government Vows To Flush Out Cartel And Mafiast by Ctorch(op): 5:29pm On Jan 27, 2020
The Anambra State Government on Monday expressed concern that despite its successful arrest of over fourth illegal revenue collectors, in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State, it keeps discovering aggressive and violent young revenue criminals in the city.

This was disclosed on Monday by the Commissioner for Transport Dr. Christian Madubuko while parading a notorious Mbaise Imo State, born illegal revenue collector that has been terrorizing women and motorists at Onitsha Owerri Road. Dr. Madubuko who spoke through his Personal Assistant, Mr. Benedict Okoro, lamented that those who are making sure that the Anambra State Government does not function well are the people behind the illegal revenue cartel and hoods.

“Some people have turned themselves to Kingpins, Local Lords and Mafias, who operate with hoods, they are operating in different cycles in Onitsha and its environs and they are the people leading the campaign of calumny against the government of Chief Willie Obiano.” “Despite the raids we have carried out against illegal revenue collectors in Onitsha, we keep discovering the Kingpins, Local Lords and Mafias, who are operating with different hoods and cycles of illegal revenue collection. “What is going on in Onitsha is similar to what is experienced in the hoods, there are revenue hoods, cartels and Mafias operating in Onitsha and they are also behind sabotaging and discrediting the good works of Governor Obiano. “What the kingpins and the overlords are doing, is gathering young boys from outside Anambra State, who of course were not able to have access to good education, who are mentally and morally broken, they use them to sustain their own local mafia and cartel of illegal revenue collection.

“They send these boys to engage for them in illegal tolls collection, to steal against the government in order to become financially more powerful against the government, they also use the money to fight against the government so that they can become a threat to the government. “They use the same boys, their hoods to wage physical war against the government and its officials who try to stop them, it is a very serious cartel, they have coordinators in various streets, they have different kiosks where from where they operate, but we are arresting them, we want to get their masters, most of them have been on hiding, we are after them and we must win the battle, they must leave Anambra State.”

PoliticsNorthern Groups Back Amotekun, Demand ‘operation Shege Ka Fasa’ by Ctorch(op): 7:39am On Jan 26, 2020
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) is canvassing the establishment of Operation Shege ka Fasa in the North in response to the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun. ‘Shege ka Fasa’ means I dare you.

The coalition, which was the brain behind the 2018 quit notice to the Igbo living in the North, said yesterday that the North is even more genuinely entitled to be angry in view of the current high level of security challenge in that part of the country. It cited the incessant attacks on and killings of innocent citizens by gunmen, abductions, destruction of communities and terrorism.

Spokesman for the group, Abdulazeez Suleiman, said in a statement in Kaduna that the North has persevered in a dangerous security environment fuelled by outside interests that thrive on the supply of deadly merchandise including  hard drugs and other harmful substances and the proliferation of arms in the region. The group wondered why   the SouthWest had to wait until after the conclusion of the 2019 elections before coming up with Operation Amotekun. But it said the security outfit should function within the ambit of the law.

“We are convinced that there is indeed a justifiable reason for Nigerians to seek to take extra measures for self- protection and preservation in the prevailing circumstances,” it said. It added: “This need is necessitated by the apparent failure of the government to discharge its primary duty of protecting the lives and properties of all citizens. “Recall that in 2015, Nigerian voters trusted Buhari to lead our nation through and out of its limitations, into a future in which we will live secure lives and pursue livelihoods in a united Nigeria whose human and material resources will be protected by leaders.

“Regrettably, five years on, the story is that of poverty ravaging communities, hunger stalking millions of homes, inflation making life difficult, people losing jobs, businesses closing down, infrastructure decaying, young Nigerians losing hope, which are all drivers to the current security situation.

“Worth recalling also, is that long before the current deterioration, the government had been advised severally to take definite steps to end the conflict between farmers and the pastoral communities which it shunned. Instead government came up with various ambiguous policies in the form of Ruga, livestock transformation, etc that all ended in controversy, and were never implemented.

“At a point, the CNG and Northern Elders Forum were compelled to consider advising the pastoralists to return home to safety at which the presidency intervened by renewing the vow to protect all citizens’ rights to live and thrive anywhere in the country.

“Having evidently failed to do that, the ensuing level of fear and uncertainty pervading the country now sparks concerns that government’s willingness and the quality of coordination of efforts, management of resources and the capacities and integrity of the mechanisms charged with the nation’s security do not do justice to the magnitude of the problems, or address the sense of urgency in dealing with an escalating disaster.”

On the launching of Operation Amotekun by the SouthWest, the CNG said: “While we do not dispute the right of the South West to initiate the Amotekun as a necessary alternative to secure their safety in the face of government’s control lapses, we nevertheless understand the need for such measures to abide by due processes that conform with relevant laws of the land.

“In this regard, CNG recognizes the authority of the Federal Government to take steps to disband all militias and armed groups everywhere in Nigeria to ensure that no group has the capacity to challenge the State in its prerogative to maintain law and order, and protect citizens’ lives and properties.

“The acceptable position remains that only legally constituted outfits and lawfully sanctioned organizations under the direct control of the Federal Government, as recognized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, can be so organized, armed and fitted.

“Any extra judicial arrangement by which regions set up state-sponsored armed militia groups may therefore not be tolerated as it only confirms suspicions of a wider agenda similar to that of IPOB, to cajole other parts of the country to submit to their ambition for political ascendancy.

“In particular, the idea of Amotekun on the claim of deteriorating national security at this point, raises the question of why, if they are sincere, the South West leaders fought so hard to secure the return of this same administration for another term, notwithstanding the security lapses that manifested long before the elections of 2019.

“If indeed the aim of the South West leaders is to use Amotekun as weapon to coerce the nation into ceding the presidency to them in future, CNG finds it pedestrian and tactless as brigandage will only jeopardize their chances the way IPOB did to South East politics. On the contrary, any section of the country that is able to present a credible alternative shall certainly gain the support of Nigerians without the need for resorting to bluffing.

“ In the prevailing circumstances, the North is even more genuinely entitled to be angry at the rate its people are attacked, killed, towns and villages vandalized, innocent citizens including children abducted, and terrorized, families traumatized and communities displaced on a daily basis.

“All this while, the North has persevered in a dangerous security environment fuelled by outside interests that thrive on the supply of such deadly merchandise as hard drugs and other harmful substances and the proliferation of arms into the region.

“With the current level of anger, frustration and uncertainty that is fueling communal disharmony and mutual distrust, CNG believes that the North should as well take similar steps to arrange for the protection of the region and its people from these daily attacks and destructions.

“Thus, failure of the authorities to provide proof of its capacity to protect citizens in all parts of the North as minimum evidence that they are serious about their responsibilities, would leave the people with no option than to resort to forming an Arewa Security Initiative to secure their people’s lives with the proposed code name “Shege ka Fasa.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, notwithstanding that Nigerians may not have quarrels with region taking measures to protect its people, they are at the same time unlikely to give in to calculated manipulation, coercion, intimidation, aggression or undue show of force in whatever guise.

“On its part, the North remains confident that it will not shy away from any process leading to any form of national reassessment that may arise now or in the future, in the context of a genuine dialogue without hidden agendas or preconditions.”

PoliticsBuhari To EU: We Will Defeat Boko Haram With Civil War Experience by Ctorch(op): 6:00pm On Jan 25, 2020
We'll defeat Boko Haram with civil war experience, Buhari tells EU

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Friday in Abuja said security forces in the country are capable and competent in winning the fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the country.

He said with the 30-month civil war experience of Nigeria's military, it is capable of handling the crisis rocking the North-East.

Buhari said this while receiving Janez Lenarcic, the European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management in the State House, Abuja.

The President said, “If we were capable to fight a 30-month civil war and reorganised our country, I wonder why people are thinking that Nigeria cannot do it.

“We have the experience of the civil war. I could recall the role of the military, the army, each commander had in his pocket how to behave himself and how to allow international bodies like yourself to go round and see for themselves that people are treated in the most humane way.

"We have this experience and I assure you that we also have this confidence in your organisation. That is why I feel that Nigeria is capable of handling this crisis, it may take long but we are capable of handling it.”

Buhari also blamed the inability of the Nigerian military to subdue the insurgents on the increasing proliferation of arms in the G5 Sahel region.

He said, “The important thing really is weapons reaching the Sahel; the instability it is causing. Look at the casualties in Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali; Libya has a direct impact on the stability of the Sahel.

"As for Boko Haram, we try to disabuse the minds of the people and I think our people now understand the basic dishonesty in it. With my experience personally in the civil war, I am sure we will get over it.”

The retired general also told the EU that one of the next priorities of his regime is to rehabilitate Internally Displaced Persons in the North East, adding that it informed his decision to create an exclusive ministry, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

I assure you of Nigeria’s commitment to enhance and deepen cooperation with the EU in all areas. Our priority in the next level is to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, are rehabilitated so that livelihood should be established and the children should not lose the opportunity to go back to school, which is very important for the future of that area and Nigeria generally.

“I assure you that we are aware of these problems and we will continue to do our best. The newly created Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is coordinating NEMA and others, to make sure that whatever resources we get are well utilised. The ministry will be accountable to the government instead of having too many bodies doing the same thing. We are also reaching out to foreign countries explaining to them our position, and we are confident we will get over it.”

The EU Commissioner on his part acknowledged Nigeria's big role in the African continent and requested a development plan between the EU and Nigeria concerning the issues in the North East.

He expressed the EU's readiness to support Nigeria in ending the insurgency in the Northeast.

“We would like to support your efforts. We believe all relevant actors; military, civilian as well as humanitarian should come together. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs is suggesting such high-level dialogue.

“In situations such as what we have in the northeast, international law and international humanitarian law should apply. We believe in your efforts to end the conflict; military effort alone probably will not be sufficient without identifying and addressing the socio-economic factors causing it," he stated.

Foreign AffairsUPDATED: PM Johnson Signs Agreement For Britain To Leave EU by Ctorch(op): 5:40pm On Jan 25, 2020
UPDATED: PM Johnson signs agreement for Britain to leave EU

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday hailed "a new chapter" in Britain's history as he signed its divorce deal with the EU, clearing another hurdle ahead of the country's departure from the bloc next Friday.

Johnson signed the agreement in Downing Street in front of European and British Foreign Office officials who had brought it from Brussels.

EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel had put their names to the treaty at a ceremony held behind closed doors in the dead of night.

"The signing of the withdrawal agreement is a fantastic moment, which finally delivers the result of the 2016 referendum and brings to an end far too many years of argument and division," Johnson said in a statement.

"This signature heralds a new chapter in our nation’s history," he added on Twitter.

The treaty will now return to Brussels, where the original will be kept in EU archives along with other international treaties, while three copies will be dispatched back to London.

On Wednesday next week, the text will go to the European Parliament for ratification and on Thursday diplomats from the EU member states will approve the deal in writing.

Then, on Friday, January 31, Britain spends its last day in the EU before leaving the bloc at 2300 GMT as clocks strike midnight in Brussels.

"Charles Michel and I have just signed the agreement on the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, opening the way for its ratification by the European Parliament," European Commission president Von der Leyen tweeted.

In a separate tweet, European Council president Michel said: "Things will inevitably change but our friendship will remain. We start a new chapter as partners and allies."

The former Belgian premier, whose council represents EU member governments, added, in French: "I'm keen to write this new page together."

- 'Get Brexit done' -

In another move to prepare Brussels for relations with Britain as an outside power, the European Commission named an ambassador -- veteran diplomat Joao Vale de Almeida -- to London.

Johnson signed with a Parker fountain pen, as is traditional for ceremonial signings in Downing Street, with staff including the prime minister's chief Brexit negotiator David Frost present.

Earlier in Brussels, the signing was conducted before dawn in the European Council's headquarters, as chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier looked on.

No reporters or photographers were allowed to witness the low key ceremony, despite news agencies offering to organise a pool.

British voters backed leaving the European Union in a June 2016 referendum, and after lengthy negotiations and several delays Johnson's new government plans to "get Brexit done" next week.

Queen Elizabeth II gave her formal assent to the British withdrawal legislation on Thursday and the EU is now expected to complete the final formalities in the coming days.

- 11-month transition period -

Britain will leave the institutions of the union, reducing it to 27 member states, but the withdrawal agreement provides for an 11-month transition period until the end of the year.

During this time, Britain and the rest of the bloc will continue to apply the same rules of business to avoid economic disruption while officials try to negotiate a broader trade deal.

Most experts regard the idea that London and Brussels could agree a comprehensive free trade agreement in that time as ambitious.

But officials have expressed cautious optimism that some kind of agreement can be reached.

Formal trade talks are not expected to begin until the end of February or even March, and in the meantime Barnier has been in intensive talks with EU member states on his negotiating mandate.

After the transition, Britain wants the right to set its own rules in areas such as workers' rights and environmental standards.

But Brussels has warned that the more the UK diverges from EU standards, the less it will have unfettered access to Europe's huge single market.

And a comprehensive free trade agreement of the type the EU has signed with Canada could take years to negotiate.

FamilyMan Tells Wife He’s Travelling To Borno,Only To Be Seen Marrying Another wife by Ctorch(op): 4:24pm On Jan 24, 2020
A Nigerian man who allegedly told his wife that he was traveling to Borno State has been accused of lying to his wife so he could go to Warri in Delta State to have a traditional marriage with another woman.

A Facebook user identified as Awele Ejiofor shared the story on her page and claimed she has been a friend of the family for over a decade.

Awele said Toby Onyekweli, has been her friend long before August 2011 when he got married to Ify, who is also her friend.

She accused Toby of betraying the loyalty and trust of his wife and paying her back cruelly.

Awele shared a video purportedly showing the man’s traditional marriage to his new beau with a long caption narrating how she has been a friend of the family.

She wrote:

“The circle is small, we share mutual friends, didn’t we all grow up together? You and me. I remember when you called to fix a date, I was at her’s. I had just returned from Enugu and stopped by her’s to see her. She told me you were coming. You wanted to go out with her. I was thrilled. Legit excited! Then you got married in August of 2011, I remember that day. I remember Ify came from Sweden, I watched your kids grow. Wasn’t I at your place last time I was home? Dude, we all smiled at the camera not knowing you were planning a marriage while still married.

“9 years Tobe. If she was a bad person, we would know but she wasn’t. She took all the shit from you and your mother, who controlled all you did. You got up from your bed, kissed her goodbye, told a story about going back to Borno, while you went to Warri same day for your traditional marriage.

“We are not Muslims! We are not Urhobos! We are Christians and Ndi Anioma and this it is all shades of wrong! You are first my friend before my friend’s husband. And I owe it to you to tell you the truth as your friend. I am disappointed in you!

I have no words for the Grandma you married. She didn’t drag you down this lane. YOU BROKE YOUR VOWS. It’s you I have a bone to pick with. The people on your timeline cheering you will not be there when you meet your Waterloo.

“People date married men. Sadly the norm has come to stay but you cannot be mean to a woman who has done NOTHING to you. This girl gave you her youth. She left her life to live yours. You paid her back with STDs, ill-treatment and Abuse! Yet she endured. 9 years meant nothing to you? Keep sharing photos of you and your new bride. I am going to keep reposting on my page. I mean, if I don’t take care of you, who will?

“They said we should pray for youhuh Pray for you when I am not mad? As far as I am concerned, nobody jazzed this man, let’s stop making excuses for him. He only missed the memo on how to cheat smoothly. Never go for someone beneath your present. 2. Don’t get caught. The universe will judge you, Toby Tboss Onyekweli.

“Well before it does, happy married life…… Biko, somebody should please beg him to unblock me. I come in peace.

A popular quote by JF Kennedy says “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

The above quote is a true testament of the benevolence of an individual, who Single-handedly built a road that has plagued the community for ages past.
Chief Christian Obumneme Nwogu(Omekaodimma Nnewi) built and financed a 1.05 Kilometers road for his community in Obiofia, Otolo, Nnewi Anambra State.

The road project was built due to the dire need of accessible roads into Umuenem-Obiofia, Otolo Nnewi, Anambra State. The community has been known to have bad roads and during the rainy season, it floods the entire community.

PoliticsCourt Restrains INEC, From Executing Judgmentment sacking Ubah by Ctorch(op): 6:35pm On Jan 23, 2020
Court restrains INEC, others from executing judgmentment Sacking Ubah

A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Senate, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and others from executing the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Kubwa, which sacked Ifeanyi Ubah as Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial district.

On January 17, 2020, Justice Justice Bello Kawu, who gave the earlier judgment, declined Ubah’s motion praying the court to set aside the judgment, arguing that it was fraudulently obtained.

Justice Kawu had in the judgment sacked Ubah for allegedly submitting a forged National Examination Council (NECO) certificate to INEC in support of his nomination as a candidate for the February 23, 2019, senatorial election.

But, in a judgment on Thursday, Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja granted among others, an order restraining INEC from issuing a Certificate of Return to Obinna Uzor ( of the Peoples Democratic Party – PDP) who the High Court of the FCT ordered as Ubah’s replacement.

Justice Taiwo held that INEC and other defendants, in the case filed by Ubah, could not proceed to comply with the order of the FCT High Court in defiance of the subsisting judgments of the National Assembly Elections Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, affirming Ubah’s election.

The judge, who cited sections 246(3), 285(2), of the Constitution, held that the Court of Appeal was the final court on issues pertaining to the declaration of Ubah as the winner of the senatorial election.

He restrained the defendants from complying with the judgment of the FCT High Court in Suit No CV/3044/18, which he held was defiant to the subsisting judgment of the Elections Petitions Tribunal No. EP/AN/SEN/11/2019, and affirmed by the Court of Appeal in appeal No. CA/E/EAPP/20/2019.

Justice Taiwo was of the view that INEC and the other defendants in the suit, INEC, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the Senate and Obinna Uzor, were bound to comply with the latter judgment of the Election Petitions Tribunal and Court of Appeal delivered on September 9, 2019, and October 29, 2019, respectively affirming Ubah’s election.

The judge declared among others that “the 1st defendant (INEC) has no vires to ignore the post-election judgment of the election tribunal in petition No. EPT/AN/SEN/20/2019- Uba Christian C. VS INEC and 10 others in preference for the post-election judgment of the FCT High Court in suit No. CV/3044/18”.

He equally gave an order“directing the defendants to obey and give effect to the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered in appeal No. CA/E/EAPP/20/2019, Uba Christian C. VS. According to her: ' I am the only child and daughter of a single dad, I have been married for three months now, my husband did all necessary rights, wedding and all then I moved with him and we've really been good together. I never really knew him before we married, my father was the one who told me a young man who works with him saw my pictures on his phone and said he likes me. Then I said okay, we got to meet, got familiar with each other and within 2months he rushed everything but where the problem started was when my dad moved in with us immediately after my wedding, it was okay for me because I would be seeing my dad every day but I was surprised to see my husband and dad coming out from the bathing room, after many times that my husband left the bed so early to take his bath, I didn't really take it seriously but its been happening for three months now, my husband never touches me and he's always with my father, goes to his room and comes out sweating, takes his bath with my dad before coming to bed to sleep of till the next morning, I have tried talking to him about it in the early days when I noticed but he says its nothing but now he shouts at me when I bring up such matter, even my dad doesn't wanna talk about it, I am really confused and scared, please advice me, I love my husband ', she added.

PoliticsMalami Asks Makinde To Dissolve LG Caretaker Chairmen by Ctorch(op): 8:19pm On Jan 20, 2020
Malami asks Makinde to dissolve LG caretaker chairmen

…We’ve not seen the letter ―Makinde

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) has directed the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde to reverse himself over the dissolution of local government administration in the State.

The directive was contained in a letter to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State, Prof. Oyewo Oyelowo dated 14 January 2020.

The letter marked HAGF/OYO/2020/Vol.I/I. was entitled, “Unconstitutionality of dissolution of elected local government councils and appointment of caretaker committee: the urgent need for compliance with extant judicial decisions”

The AGF said, in view of the decision of the Supreme Court on the matter that is binding on all 36 States of the Federation, “the common practice by some State Governors in dissolving elected local government councils is unconstitutional, null and void.”

“So, also any system of local government run by caretaker committee are outrightly illegal and unconstitutional”.

When Vanguard called the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, he said he had not seen the letter and when he saw it, he would know the appropriate response.

The letter reads further; “to this end, I hereby request all their Excellencies, State Governors and Speakers of State House of Assembly, who are currently acting in breach of the provisions of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and also acting in disobedience of the Supreme Court judgement highlighted above to immediately retrace their step by ensuring compliance with the above in the overall interest of the rule of law and our democracy.”

“The need to immediately disband all caretaker committee and restore democratically elected representatives to man the local governments has, therefore, become obligatory”.

PoliticsJunaid Mohammed: Amotekun Southwest’s Tribal Militia For Oduduwa Republic by Ctorch(op): 6:49pm On Jan 19, 2020
Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has lambasted the protagonists of the security outfit Amotekun, describing it as nothing but a tribal militia to prosecute the region’s agenda of transforming into a separate nation through the backdoor.

Mohammed, who spoke exclusively to Vanguard, pointed out that those behind the formation of the armed group were against the interest of Nigeria and should be made to face the full weight of the law.

According to him no section of the Nigerian constitution makes provision for either state or regional police, adding that the governors have no authority whatsoever to raise such an illegal army.

PoliticsMilitary To State Govts: Forget Alternative Security Plans by Ctorch(op): 12:35pm On Jan 18, 2020
The military high command seems to have sealed the fate of state governments seeking to establish their own security outfit, with an admonition to such states on Friday to forget their move.

The service chiefs, rising from a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, advised all Nigerians and other “stakeholders, local and state governments, to join hands with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to ensure that our country is secured rather than looking at other methods that are likely going to negate the national community policing policy that the federal government has approved.”

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting.

Abubakar’s admonition is seen as a veiled reference to the setting up of the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) codenamed Operation Amotekun.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had earlier, on Tuesday, declared Operation Amotekun as illegal because “it runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.”

If SW seriously needs Amotekun then they must adopt Sharia law.

If south insist that Amotekun is right and must stay then they have to adopt Sharia law I'm various south west states to give the Amotekun full legal and constitutional backing.

Trying seriously to equate Hisbah with Amotekun is purely childish, so it they have to adopt Sharia law and upon such Constitutional backing formula Amotekun in line with practices of Sharia and Hisbah.
