The Ghanaian police arrested three Nigerians, and one Ghanain alleged to have been involved in the kidnapping of two Canadians in Ghana. The Nigerians are Sampson Aghalor aka Romeo, a 27-year-old computer engineer, Elvis Ojiyorwe, a 27-year-old businessman, Jeff Omarsa a 28-year-old Tiler, and Yusif Yakubu a Ghanaian resident. According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) report, the Canadians Ms Lauren Tilley and Ms Bailey Chitty were in Ghana for voluntary work but were residing in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Ghana. They were hidden in an uncompleted building at Amoam-Achiase in the Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region. The suspects however during the trial on Thursday (October 31) denied the charges levied against them. One of the Nigerian Suspects , Aghalor has accused the Ghana investigator in charge of their case to have held on to his money. UCHE EKWUNIFE SHOWS VICTOR UMEH THAT IT'S NOT BY WEARING OKPU OGOLOGO!.. Kingsley Ubani Reports: BREAKING: Court of Appeal delivers Final Judgment on Anambra Central Senatorial Seat - Affirms Senator Uche Ekwunife's election - Dismisses Victor Umeh's Appeal for lack of merit The Court of Appeal, Enugu division on Friday, at about 2.30pm delivered judgment on the Appeal filed by Chief Victor Umeh and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), seeking to set aside the judgment of the Tribunal which earlier affirmed Senator Uche Ekwunife's election. Justice Ignatius Igwe Agube while reading the Judgment signed by two other Justices, dismissed the Appeal filed by Chief Victor Umeh and his party, APGA for lack of merit. While agreeing with the judgment of the Tribunal delivered on the 9th of September, 2019, Justice Agube stated that the Appellant while challenging the nomination of Senator Uche Ekwunife as the Candidate of PDP wrongly relied on Section 285 (13) of the 1999 constitution as amended. Justice Agube also stated that the nomination of candidates is a pre-election matter which is outside the mandate of the Election Petition Tribunal, hence the appellant has no business bringing the matter to the Tribunal in the first place. In dismissing 15 ground Appeal, Justice Agube stated that Substitution is nomination, therefore the Senator Uche Ekwunife was duly nominated as provided by the electoral act. He held that the Appellant being a member of another political party had no business challenging the nomination of Senator Uche Ekwunife as PDP Candidate. Justice Agube also held that the Appellant failed to prove their allegations of non-compliance. Recall that Senator Uche Ekwunife emerged victorious in the February 23rd Anambra Central Senatorial Election, defeating her closest rival, Chief Victor Umeh in the entire Seven Local Governments of the Senatorial district. The judgment which affirmed Senator Ekwunife's election as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District brings to an end the contest for the Senate seat of Anambra Central. Kingsley Ubani Court of Appeal, Enugu, Enugu State.

My daughter was beaten to death by her sister for bedwetting’ When a Lagos trader Mr. Emeka Omenka and his wife Ifeoma allowed their 13-year-old daughter Precious to go visit her married stepsister in Lekki, they never My daughter was beaten to death by her sister for bedwetting’ When a Lagos trader Mr. Emeka Omenka and his wife Ifeoma allowed their 13-year-old daughter Precious to go visit her married stepsister in Lekki, they never knew it was a decision they would regret the rest of their lives. Precious, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 pupil died on October 25 at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute Metta as a result of complications that arose from beatings she allegedly received from her older half-sister Mrs. Nneka and her mother Seki Eko on October 14 and 15. It was gathered that the teenager, upon the request of Mrs. Nneka, went to the latter’s house at Ikota in Lekki on Saturday, October 12, only to be returned to her parents on October 16 in pains. According to Mr. Omenka, Precious upon return complained of body pains and explained that she was mercilessly beaten by her elder sister, adding that Nneka’s mother who joined in beating her, kicked her several times in the stomach. He said himself and his wife bought pain killers for her and used hot water to massage her body in the hopes that she would be relieved not knowing that the girl had internal injuries, bleeding as a result of the assaults she suffered. “I am in pains. My heart is broken. I do not even know where to start. I am finding it so difficult to understand how my older daughter and her mother beat up my girl so badly to the point that she died as a result of wounds she sustained. “Nneka is my first daughter. I had her out of wedlock with one Sike Eko I was in a relationship with. Her mother runs a beer parlour at Oyingbo. But Nneka was trained by my wife Ifeoma who loved her like her own child. “When I got married to my wife, it was difficult for her to conceive and so, she brought up Nneka like her own child. So, when she came and said Precious should come to her place in Ikota, we did not have any reason to deny her request. “She has been begging my wife for about two years now to allow Precious come and stay with her. Her husband lives in Dubai. She promised to send her to a private school to appreciate my wife for taking care of her when I married her. “Precious went to her place on October 12. It was that weekend that it rained all through. Then, on October 14, which was a Monday, it also rained and Precious said she peed on the bed. That was her offence that made my daughter and her mother to descend on her like that. “When they have finished, they brought her back and dumped her at my place in Apapa Road, Ebute Metta. She was complaining of body pains and narrated what happened to her at her sister’s place in tears. I could not bear it and I wept as she was talking. a”My wife and I bought pain killers that we gave her. My wife was also using hot water and clothe to massage her body. We did not know that it was so bad. When we saw that she was not getting better despite the painkillers, we decided to take her to FMC because that’s where she was born. “She was already stooling on her body and her mother was cleaning it. So, at the hospital, she was rushed to the Emergency room after the doctors said she was short of blood. They did so many tests and scans and discovered that she was bleeding internally and that her bladder burst too. “She was in the hospital some days and was booked for emergency surgery. I was busy running around to raise money to save my daughter’s life. I even borrowed from friends and family members so that she could be saved but at least we lost her. “Throughout this period, Nneka did not tell me what happened to my daughter. She did not even come to the hospital until her relative from her mother’s side who works at the FMC called her to rebuke her. “That was when she came and spent about N14,000 on my daughter’s drugs that day. I am still trying to understand all these things because I honestly do not get it. I did not go to the police station then because I was busy running around for my daughter to be alright. “But after she passed on and my kinsmen knew what happened, they advised I go and report at the station. I went to Denton Police Station and Iponri but they told me it did not happen in their jurisdiction and that I have to go to Lekki to report. “How will I go to Lekki which is their area to report a case against her? Will I be able to afford the expenses? That is why I did not go there. I just sent a message to her husband and told him what she did. Hausa traders reject planned development of popular Alaba Rago market in Lagos Traders in the popular Alaba Rago International Market in Lagos have rejected the planned development of the market by the authorities of Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA). Our correspondent reports that the plan by the LCDA to develop the market had generated tension and mixed feelings among traders in the market. A stakeholders’ meeting called this week by the LCDA authorities ended in a stalemate as leaders and stakeholders of the market rejected the planned development. Daily Trust reports that the market is predominantly populated by the Hausa people though there are other non-Hausa traders selling all kinds of items in the market. The Hausa traders told the LCDA authorities to allow them continue the development of the market as they had been doing in the last 40 years. Serikin Hausawa of the market, Alhaji Mustapha Sokoto, asked the council to hand over the development plan to them which they would carry out according to specifications. He expressed fears that most of the traders would not be able to afford shops if the market should be demolished and new set of structures erected. Spokesman of the Hausa traders, Alhaji Adamu Katagum, stressed that the Hausa traders had settled for decades in the market and invested heavily in the development of the market. He said: “We have been developing this place for a long time and we would not stop developing it. What we want is for the LCDA to hand over the development plan to us and we would follow the plan to the latter.” Chairman of Iba LCDA, Mrs. Rahmat Rachael Oseni, who made a presentation of the 3-D plan for Alaba Rago market, said her predecessors started the project to give the market a facelift. She said the time had come for the council to develop the market and solicited the cooperation of traders even as she assured that shops would be affordable to the traders in the new market being proposed. But the presentation by the chairman did not convince the Hausa traders who insisted they had the money to develop the market. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/hausa-traders-reject-planned-development-of-alaba-rago-market.html |

Veteran actor, Ebun Oloyede, popularly known as Olaiya Igwe, recently revealed that his only regret about growing up in the village is his tribal mark. Many cultures in Africa, particularly Nigeria, are known to have unique marks they brand on their indigenes and it is said to be for identification purposes. However, many people have lived to regret these marks on their bodies as it exposes them to bullying, shame, lack of confidence, among other things. Just recently, veteran actor Olaiya Igwe, revealed to City People that he regrets having tribal marks. The filmmaker who has put in over 40 years in the movie industry explained that those marks are not a part of our culture and it is an uncivilized act. He said: “Tribal mark is not a culture. It is an uncivilized act. It is not a DNA, because as at that time they believed it is Yoruba DNA. It is very easy to recognize one another outside that you are from the same compound, but who told them that I belong to their family or part of their family? It is only my mother that can tell if I belong to the family or not. What if my pregnancy belongs to her concubine, but she brought it to my father? Which is very possible then, and there was nothing like DNA test to check the true paternity of a child then.” To further buttress his point about tribal marks not being a part of our culture, Olaiya cited the example of one of Nigeria’s monarchs, the Alaafin of Oyo. According to him, the Alaafin is a handsome king who has tribal marks but his grand kids do not have them because it is not part of our tradition. He said: “Look at our father, Alaafin Oyo, a very handsome man even with his tribal mark, though some of his children have tribal marks, but what about the grandchildren? None of them has a tribal mark. That is to tell you that tribal is not our tradition, it is not our culture, because if it is, somebody like Alaafin Oyo should keep and promote the custom till date because he’s our father. If it is our culture then it shouldn’t have disappeared from the palace; it shouldn’t have been erased from the palace. It is purely an act of wickedness. Thank God for civilization that completely erased it. If it is something important or part of our culture, all my 7 children should have it because I have it.” Hmm…Interesting. https://www.legit.ng/1270947-my-regret-tribal-mark-veteran-actor-olaiya-igwe-says.html |

The Fulani Socio-cultural organization, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, MAKH, has apologized to the government and people of Benue state over herdsmen attacks and killings in the state in 2018. National Secretary of the organization, Alhaji Alhassan Saleh, tendered the apology Saturday at a peace meeting brokered by the Chairman of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyeama in Makurdi. Alhaji Saleh who expressed the regrets of his association over the killings pledged to ensure peaceful coexistence and collaboration between herdsmen and farmers in the state. “We are sorry for all that happened. Governor Ortom is peace-loving man who stood firmly for his people and I can assure you that our members will support and work with the peace initiatives of the Governor,” he said. Responding, Governor Ortom said the “Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law was not enacted to chase anyone away from the Benue stats but to end the ceaseless killing of innocent people and encourage ranching which is the global best practice in animal husbandry. “The law has provisions for the protection of both the famers and herders so it is a win win for all and it is not meant to promote crisis but to ensure peaceful coexistence. “So anyone or ethnic group wishing to rear livestock in Benue state is free to come, acquire land and ranch according to the provisions of the ranching law without hinderance.” Earlier Chief Onyema who harped the need for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in Benue State, explained that he personally brought Alhaji Saleh to broker peace between Miyetti Allah and the government and people of the Benue state. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/10/miyetti-allah-apologize-to-benue-over-herdsmen-killings/ |
Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, others should use their cultural differences for national unity not division - VP Osinbajo H arnessing the power in Nigeria’s diverse, but fascinating cultures as a major basis for national unity would help the country prevail over the challenges confronting it and spur national development, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Prof. Osinbajo added that Nigerians should amplify the positive narratives of its shared history and heritage through tourism, arts and culture, while using it as a compass to navigate the present and the future as a united country. The Vice President stated this on Friday in Benin City, Edo State, at a Town Hall meeting which was a major part of the week-long activities marking this year’s National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST). Highlighting the significance of national unity, he said, “One of our tasks as artistes, scholars, enthusiasts and citizens interested in reclaiming our heritage is to interrogate our past with an eye for our commonalities rather than merely rehashing our distinctions. “This matter because it is only by standing together that we can prevail over the challenges confronting us. These challenges know neither tribe nor tongue; they afflict us all universally and only by uniting in our diversity can we hope to overcome them.” According to him, arts and culture go beyond romanticizing the past, as it also “provide a better way people can get the best narratives about themselves; because the ancient landmarks of history provide the bearing and help navigate the present and the future.” The Vice President who was taken on a tour of the National Museum, accompanied by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, said the cultural memorabilia on display gave insight into the depth of the nation’s history. “I was taken round the National Museum on a most fascinating tour and I have seen much that fills me with hope. Among the treasures on display are artefacts that highlight the deep socio-cultural linkages between the Bini, on one hand, and other ethnic communities such as the Igala, the Urhobo, the Igbo and the Yoruba, among other groups, on the other hand,” he said. The Vice President further said that, “while we often look to our past to emphasize or exaggerate our differences, part of the legacy of ancient Benin is the constant reminder of the similarities between our diverse peoples.” “I am delighted to have been able to tour the museum with very enthusiastic students from schools here in Edo State. By acquainting themselves with the treasures of Benin, they have also hopefully been infused with a thirst for historical knowledge and have also received an invaluable awareness of the depth of the things that bind us together.” Recollecting the history of Benin Kingdom, Prof. Osinbajo noted that, “the invasion of the Benin Kingdom in 1897 would have ended a lesser civilization. Instead, the royal dynasty survived and the legacy of Benin endures, not only through the lineage of its noble royal houses, but also in the evident resilience of her people. “I have just had the pleasure of inspecting some of the works of the local guild of craftsmen and artisans that has existed for more than five hundred years. This is an example of what the spirit of Benin is all about – resilience, tenacity and creativity. These are attributes that can elevate and inspire our nation as a whole to greater heights.” Continuing, the VP commended Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, “for his vision and his leadership in seeking to reposition Edo State as a foremost destination for investment and tourism.” “As we diversify our economy and move our nation in the direction of revenues beyond oil, tourism is clearly one sector with untold potential for growth. Edo State is clearly blazing a trail in this direction,” the VP stated. NAFEST is an annual event held to celebrate Nigeria’s diversity using arts and culture as a platform to promote national unity. This year’s edition is the first time it would be hosted in Edo State in the last 40 years, and its celebration also marked the third year of coronation and birthday of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II. Earlier in the day, the Vice President paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Benin, commending the Monarch for playing a major role in preserving the heritage of Benin kingdom and enhancing the peace in his domain. He also congratulated him on his birthday and the third year of his reign. In his remark, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as the Vice President, for appointing two of Edo sons as cabinet ministers and one of them also into the Board of NDDC. Similarly, Governor Obaseki thanked President Buhari for approving the hosting of NAFEST festival in Edo this year, and also commended the Vice President for visiting the State and gracing the occasion. https://todaynewsafrica.com/igbo-yoruba-hausa-others-should-use-their-cultural-differences-for-national-unity-not-division-vp-osinbajo/?fbclid=IwAR3waoj4-dT5eBtmB_rVUZGYgrWIYY3cFf_GkdgPPL4gk6doBgbFJf4XgmE |

RUGA: Umahi threatens legal action against Ebonyi group, give 7-day ultimatum for retraction Ebonyi Governor, Chief David Umahi, yesterday, threatened legal action against Paschal Oluchukwu and his group, Organization of Ebonyi Indigenes in the Diaspora if they failed to apologise to him within seven days over allegation that the state government was considering giving land for RUGA settlement. In a letter signed by the Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, the governor said the allegations from the group published in some national dailies which was credited to Paschal Oluchukwu was prejudiced and targeted at pitting the people of the state against him and his government. “We would’ve ignored you hoping that you are bereft of fact, but because your glaring prejudice for the government and the good people of Ebonyi State informed your action and for posterity sake, we deem it necessary to respond to your callous and baseless assertion to save the general public from being misinformed. “Such write-up is not just geared towards casting aspersions on the government’s matchless commitments to good governance, but a conscious attempt to pit us against our people whose collective will as enshrined in the constitution, we swore to protect”, the letter partly read. Umahi, however, gave Oluchukwu and his group a seven-day ultimatum from Friday, 25th October to publish a full page retraction and apologies to the government of Ebonyi State, failure for which he would take legal action against the duo. “Therefore we are giving you and your group an ultimatum of seven days from Friday, October 25, 2019 to write a full page retraction and apologies of that ill-conceived write-up against the Ebonyi State Government in four national dailies, of which if the above is not adhered to, the Ebonyi State Government will take legal actions against you and your group”, the letter stated. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/ruga-umahi-threatens-legal-action-against-ebonyi-group-give-7-day-ultimatum-for-retraction/ |

Following what it called stringent and impossible bail conditions granted by Abuja Federal High Court to secure the release of Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of #RevolutionNow, the Centre for Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has said it would approach the court again to ensure that reasonable bail condition was given. Yinka Folarin, Lagos State Secretary of CDHR, told Daily Independent that his organisation had not abandoned Sowore, contrary to insinuation in some quarters, which he described as unthinkable. He said Sowore remained a very strong member of its constituency, stressing that it was impossible for him to be abandoned or neglected. He said the organisation had occupied itself with the compilation of all cases of human rights violation across the country and it was ready to challenge government on them. “Sowore’s case has exposed the ills of this government. We won’t accept the reduction of the bail fee by 50 percent, it is ridiculous. We are on top of the game. “We can never accept the undemocratic condition attached to the bail conditions. The restrictions to movement, freedom of association and the rest of them are not acceptable to us. “Everything is wrong with the bail conditions and we would continue to oppose that. We have our lawyer, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and he is doing well.” Folarin said Sowore’s case had exposed this government and its disrespect for human rights, maintaining that activists would never be intimidated by the government and its agencies. He stressed that they were going to approach the court again to ensure that reasonable bail condition be given. He maintained that the citizens deserved their freedom as enshrined in the constitution and any violation of such rights must be resisted and no government agency would stop them from standing up to oppose evil. https://www.independent.ng/sowores-bail-condition-well-approach-court-again-cdhr/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |
Fulani herdsmen threaten legal action against Oyo Assembly over anti-open grazing bill The public outcry that characterised the anti-open grazing bill at the Oyo State House of Assembly took another dimension Wednesday when Fulani herdsmen in the state vowed to drag the state lawmakers to court over the proposed law. At a meeting in Igangan, an agrarian community in Ibarapa North Local Government Area, that lasted several hours and with hundreds of the herdsmen from across the state in attendance, they resolved to use legal options to fight the bill. The bill entitled, ‘Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Bill 2019’, which has passed through second reading at the House of Assembly was jointly sponsored by the Speaker of the Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, the deputy Speaker, Abiodun Fadeyi, Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, and the minority Leader, Asimiyu Alarape. The bill, when it becomes law, would prohibit open grazing in the state. The House had two weeks ago, organized a public hearing for stakeholders to bare their minds and make suggestions to the proposed bill. During the public hearing, farmers and some Fulani’s in the state disagreed over the proposed anti-grazing bill. While the farmers’ ambassador, Azeez Maboreje, in his address, lauded the lawmakers for taking the bull by the horn for considering the bill; the national chairman of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, Sale Bayari, in an 18-page position paper, said the bill if passed into law would punish poor herders, saying, “it is impossible in our country for any peasant small scale herdsman to go into ranching.” However, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Abiodun Fadeyi, while speaking at a town hall meeting on Monday in Ibadan, had insisted that the proposed law is not in any way to punish or witchhunt Fulani herdsmen in the state. Mr Fadeyi who spoke at the town hall meeting organized in conjunction with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), for the people of Ona-Ara State constituency where he represents, noted that the open rearing and grazing regulation bill 2019 is not in any way targeted at any group or set of people. “We have passed many bills since we came in the last four months. Numerous bills. When this administration came into government, we enacted some of the bills to establish some of the ministries,” he said. And the one that is germane is the anti-grazing, open rearing bill and the anti-corruption bills. The anti-open grazing bill is not only a discourse in the state alone, it is throughout the country. It is the bill that will help us in terms of generating revenue for the state. “We are talking about the anti-open grazing bill now that will help us in terms of the internally generated revenue (IGR), that will encourage private ownership of ranches and what a few and to control or to curtail the movement of the herders from one place to the other indiscriminately. So these are some of the things the bill will be able to do and not to witchhunt the herders or anyone.” But, the Fulani herdsmen at their meeting presided over by the Sarkin Fulani of Oyo State, Saliu Abdul-Kadir, described the bill as “too draconian” and targeted at crippling Fulani herdsmen from practising their age-long cattle rearing activities across the state. “We will go to court. We will seek legal redress if Oyo State Government insists on imposing this bill on us,” Mr Abdul-Kadir said. Reeling out the communique of the meeting to journalists, the Oyo State Secretary of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association, Garba Umar, said the Fulani herdsmen had resorted to rejecting the bill in its totality because they perceived it as one that would cause a serious setback to their means of livelihood. “The implementation of the bill as it is will cause commotion,” he said. “It is simply this issue that threw up IDP Camps in Benue. And we don’t want all this to happen here in Oyo State where we have been living peacefully with our fellow farmers for ages. “However, if we are pushed to the wall, we know the next level. Our next level is to seek the legal option. We will go to the court of law over the matter. “But for now, we are begging Oyo State Government to see us as Nigerians and partners in progress who, for ages immemorial, have added values to the economy of the State. “It is also a matter of fact that we Fulani dominate large percentage of voters in Oyo State. Government only recognize us during electioneering and voting periods. Government is not giving us any facility or loan to boost our cattle rearing business while the farmers, on the other hand, get agric loans, fertilizers, etc. Is this the only way Government is now repaying us for our patriotism? “We are equally opposed to ranching which is capital intensive. Why not ask the farmers also to fence their farm holdings? How much are we going to be spending per caged cow per annum in form of feeding, etc.? We do not agree. “Government should rather checkmate the inflow of foreign Fulanis who have been responsible for the security challenges in the land.” Matthew Opeoluwa, Special Assistant, New Media to the Speaker in a message to Premium Times reacting to the court threat, said the House would soon release its position on the herdsmen’s decision. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/359286-fulani-herdsmen-threaten-legal-action-against-oyo-assembly-over-anti-open-grazing-bill.html?fbclid=IwAR0gny5g5OA8OSGM2AcwhsD5hFzG63L2pqLVlZJqwjKcNddgWQ1FZCxvv9s

WHY I CANNOT DESCRIBE GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON AS A HERO When the real history of the country is written the role of General Yakubu Gowon and the other Nigerian commanders during the civil war will be put in proper perspective. The slaughter of 3 million Biafran civilians in that war is the greatest act of black on black genocide in human history. I cannot celebrate the birth of a man who presided over such carnage and neither can I describe him as a hero. Nigeria cannot make much progress or truly prosper until she apologises to the Igbo and Biafrans for the great evil that we visited upon them duing the civil war. The waging of war is different to the mass murder of civilians. The former is lawful, the latter is not. War between two armies is legitimate but the targetting and slaughtering of innocent and defenceless men, women and children is a violation of international law and a crime against humanity. Worse still such savagery and barbarity is simply unacceptable in a society or nation that lays claim to being rational, reasonable, decent, benign and civilised. The truth is that those that were directly involved in the carnage have innocent blood on their hands and that blood cries to God in heaven for vengeance and justice. We as a nation would do well to learn from others and muster the decency and courage to apologise and make reparations to the people of the South East for the abominable cruelty and wickedness that we visited on them in the name of the Nigerian civil war.
