PoliticsGombe State Delegation Visits Anambra; Embarks On Study Tour Of ASHIA. by Ctorch(op): 5:47pm On Dec 21, 2019
Gombe State Delegation visits Anambra; embarks on Study Tour of ASHIA.
By Chidiebele Cy Obika.
A six man delegation from the Gombe State Government yesterday, December 20, 2019 arrived Awka, the Anambra State capital for a study tour of the best performing Health Insurance scheme in Nigeria - the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency(ASHIA).
Speaking after a five-hour intensive briefing of the visitors at the state headquarters of the Agency in Awka, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, the Executive Secretary of ASHIA and SPAD on Health to Gov. Obiano, said; ' our brothers from Gombe state are in the State on the recommendation of National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) to embark on a study tour of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency'.
' They are here to understudy the mordus operandi of the scheme; successes and challenges, so that it would aid them in establishing Gombe State Health Insurance Agency. They have special focus on our achievements in the informal sector'.
Continuing, Dr. Onyemaechi noted that the team and members of the agency had a very interactive session and expressed his happiness that the members were quick to understand the 'adoption model', strategies they adopted in capturing the people of the informal sector, ways of aggregating funds and so many others. The ES/SPAD of ASHIA. admitted that the session allowed them to know more on areas they need to improve and therefore thanked Gov. Willie Obiano for his political WILL in ensuring the full implementation of the scheme and his regular payment of consolidated revenue and capitation rates.
On his part, the leader of the delegation and Executive Secretary of Gombe State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Abdulrahaman Shuaibu noted that they were in the state to basically understudy the workings of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency so that they can replicate same in their state.
' Already, we have bills before the Gombe State House of Assembly and we are hoping they will be passed into law soon. So, we are here to arm ourselves with information on how to set up our own'.
' In Gombe State, we are focusing more on the informal sector because they are the majority and we've heard a lot of success stories about Anambra state and the informal sector'.
' The session was very engaging. We've learnt a lot of lessons which I believe if applied, the Gombe State Health Insurance Scheme will succeed', Dr. Shuaibu concluded.
The delegation later visited some ASHIA accredited hospitals in Awka where they interacted with the scheme's beneficiaries.

PoliticsTipper Drivers Protest Grounds Onitsha by Ctorch(op): 7:56pm On Dec 20, 2019
Tipper drivers' protest in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Friday grounded socioeconomic activities in the commercial city.

Vehicular movements were halted from 7am to 12 noon as the protesters blocked the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

Entry and exit from the state were made impossible by the tipper drivers as they blocked both sides of the road with a number of tipper trucks while singing anti-government songs.

They alleged intimidation and extortion by government revenue agencies.
The Friday protest by the  group was the third  in the series.

Some of their placards read, "Governor Obiano your appointees are destroying your good work, " Prof. Theresa, Mr Nzekwu, Mr. Uchenna Okafor, "Wiper" have no business in your government, they are destroying your government" "We love Obiano but his Commissioners are destroying his government because of selfish interests and the interests of their friends and family members".

The president-general of Tipper Drivers Association, Anambra State chapter, Ebuka Unekwe, explained that his members were being made to pay N1000 per trip of sand they lifted and additional N1400 and N700  illegal levies.

He said, "You will recall that we blocked this road in the middle of this year shortly after the removal of the former Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Uchenna Okafor, "Wiper" who introduced all those illegal levies.
"We were invited to Awka to meet with the governor but in the end, the person we saw was the Commissioner of Police who met with us and wherein some of our members were detained in police cells and all effort to see the governor was blocked by the same people who are benefiting from our woes.

"We blocked this road today (Friday) with pain as last resort to draw the attention of the governor to the extortions his appointees have been engaged in."

He added, "We are constrained to do this because we can see the suffering of our brothers and sisters who are returning home for the season.

"We have got a Federal High Court judgement against these illegal revenue agents, but they do not want to obey the court ruling because of the money they are making from us."

However, It took the intervention of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District for the protesters to retreat.

Ubah, it was gathered, was trapped in the gridlock for hours while coming from the Asaba Airport in Delta State.

Ubah said, "I am pained that the incident is happening when people are coming home for the Christmas and new year celebrations.

"I will fix a meeting with the tipper drivers to know the problems and how to get across to governor Obiano to take action against the perpetrators of the illegalities that had led to this.

PoliticsAgain, Who Killed Bola Ige? - The Nation Newspaper by Ctorch(op): 9:59am On Dec 20, 2019
It is eighteen years since Bola Ige, Afenifere chieftain and former governor of the old Oyo State, departed this wide, wild world of war, courtesy of some yet-to-be identified assassins.
Ige was the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation at the time of his death on December 23, 2001.
Close to two decades after the gory incident, Solemilia Court, No 8, Akinlabi Sanda Close, Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the foremost nationalist breathed his last on that fateful Sunday evening, still wears a mournful look, save for some few-and-far-between movements in and out of the compound.
Credible sources revealed that the room, where the former presidential aspirant was killed, remains under lock and key, in the family’s hope that, one day, destiny will change its mind and the uncleansed sacrilege of its patriarch’s murder will be resolved in the interest of justice.
Cicero captured the mood of our predicament when he wrote: “the hope of escaping with impunity is the greatest incentive to vice.”Jean-Jacques Rousseau also dreaded its evil in the human society when he posited that “as soon as it is possible to disobey with impunity, disobedience is legitimate …” Yes, we know that Bola Ige is dead and has since been buried! However, blame the portentous naughtiness, hypocritical propensity and a bourgeoning legitimacy of impunity for providing the ingredients for our inability to find his killers and apply sanctions.
And there is no other way to cure impunity than a draconian attack; for, if we don’t get that aspect of justice right, we will only be shooting in the dark; and at imaginary targets!
Dele Giwa (1986)! Alfred Rewane (1995)! Bagauda Kaltho (1996)! Kudirat Abiola (1996)! MKO Abiola (1998)!Barnabas Igwe and Abigail, his wife (2002)! Marshall Harry (2003)! Aminosari Dikibo (2004)! Hassan Olajoku (2005)! Ayodeji Daramola (2006)! Funsho Williams (2006)! Dipo Dina (2010)! Olaitan Oyerinde (2012)! Funke Olakunri (2019)! As a game or a trade, Nigeria is in dangerous times and all eyes can see it! More to the shock of Nigerians, dear country has couched euphemistic names for reckless killings in the land; and it is as if the gods are angry! In Katsina, Governor Aminu Masari is now at the forefront of negotiations with bandits for “peace to return to” President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state.
Curiously, other states are fast catching the bug! Elsewhere in Kaduna State, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has, in a spate of two years, paid more than “N300m as ransom to free over-500” of its members from the kidnappers’ den.
And, in what could be described as half cup of much bigger problems in this poignant portrait of vanity and falseness, the usual band of four hundred prophets continue to hang around Ahab and Jehoshaphat, even, as the kings march on Syria.
For a fact, societal cohesion comes as a result of the interconnectedness of little-yet-important ties. However, whenever those ties are ruptured, the consequences are always grave.

That security is a global problem is a fair and general argument! But, where a dog kills a lion, the society needs to beware! Amidst what looks like faint promises of recovery from those elected and paid to protect us, Leah Sharibu has added to the number of Nigerians wasting away in Boko Haram’s custody even as the police hierarchy now allegedly pays ransom to kidnappers in exchange for freedom for its seized officers, Yet, it does not appear as if the people are ready to do something concrete about this tragic manifestation of the statelessness of the Nigerian state. Instead, everybody keeps going about his or her daily activities as if nothing is amiss!
Very recently, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka wrote a letter to the National Assembly on the controversial Hate Speech Bill before the Hallowed Chamber. In the letter, Soyinka asked, rhetorically, if it’s “now cool to kill” Nigerians. Going by the contents of the letter, it’s obvious that the 85-year old elder statesman was frustrated. Hence, he wanted to know if it’s now normal to turn Nigeria into a series of accidents. Well, if this is now the way to go, then, Ige’s assassination is a warning to the rich and the powerful that they should not sleep and close their two eyes because they can die anytime; and nothing will happen! Again, the implication is that, even, if the president is murdered in his sleep, it will also be seen as normal!
In Jane Mayer’s view, “nothing predicts future behavior as much as past impunity.” While conceding that some government efforts are noble, fact remains that the foundational structure of those efforts in Nigeria are on a shaky and porous ground.
Unlike other climes, where people are sure of getting justice when homicide is committed, our ‘Rule of Law’ is in glaring contrast to justice! Little wonder: as some people are trying to make the country proud, others are working at bringing it down.
Take for instance a state like Osun, where the government is crying out that people should come and do business in the state.
For God’s sake, how do you expect people, who could be killed and nothing would be done, to come and invest their fame and fortune in an unsafe country? And what manner of the ‘Rule of Law’ is it that has not been able to fish out the culprits in the assassination of ‘Uncle Bola’, 18 years after?
Back to the issues surrounding our situation, Ige has been killed and there is nothing we can do about it again! But then, his gruesome murder, which also led to the sudden death of Atinuke, his wife; and destabilized his family, is a sad trajectory that won’t go away, no matter how hard we try to cover the smoke.
As a matter of fact, this country will neither know peace nor press the pedal of acceleration towards development and progress until the stress and the strain of this malady is addressed. If they like, let the birds of passage continue to row on a boat of pretence with their hollow and sequined glint as if nothing happened at ‘Solemilia Court’ on December 23, 2001!
Again, who killed Bola Ige? Or, is it yet another in the series of eni to ku, tie lo gbe (unresolved murders?
May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, continue to rest the souls of all the faithful departed!
Komolafe writes in from Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State, Nigeria (ijebujesa@yahoo.co.uk)

PoliticsTheophilus Danjuma Says Yoruba People Not Helping Matters In Nigeria by Ctorch(op): 9:43am On Dec 20, 2019
The ‘fifth columnists’ among your people are not helping matters - Theophilus Danjuma hits Yoruba over state of the nation

Retired General Theophilus Danjuma says Nigeria is experiencing a lot of challenges that require its citizens to 'wake up'

- Danjuma, a former defence minister, accuses some people in Yoruba land of playing roles that have not helped the nation

- Leader of the Afenifere, Ayo Adebanjo, also claims the south west has been politically submerged

Theophilus Danjuma, a retired Army General and former defence minister in Nigeria, has said if the country must make progress, its people must be ready to play their parts.
Daily Trust reports that Danjuma said this in Ibadan, Oyo state, during a book launch on the story of the Nigerian Tribune.
The report quoted Danjuma as saying what the country is facing would not make anyone who is aware sleep soundly.

“In Yorubaland, everybody seems to have lost their voice, scared. And people appear not to care about what is happening. If I tell you what I know that is happening in Nigeria today, you will no longer sleep," he was quoted as saying.

Danjuma said: "Nigeria is in a big hole as nation. And people who put us in this hole have continued today. So, we’ve to wake up. Only we can save ourselves."
He lamented what he called the activities of fifth columnists in the south west adding that these set of people have not helped the situation.
He prayed that God will continue to bless the country.
The report also quoted Chief Ayo Adebajo, a leader of the Afenifere pan-Yoruba group as saying the south west had been politically submerged.
On his part, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said the country urgently needs restructuring.
He also kicked against the controversial hate speech bill currently going through the process of becoming law the Senate.

PoliticsBuhari Sacks Odubu-Led NDDC Board by Ctorch(op): 10:36am On Dec 19, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the recomposition of the Dr. Pius Odubu-led Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The President also validated the existence of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the commission led by Dr Joi Nunieh.

The new twist at the NDDC was contained in a statement on Thursday morning by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Mr. Femi Adesina.

According to the statement, the supervisory power over the commission would continue rest with the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
The President also informed that the IMC of the commission would function until the forensic audit of the accounts and activities of the commission, which he ordered earlier in the year, is completed.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has approved that the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) be recomposed and inaugurated after the forensic audit of the organisation.

“The President has also directed that the Interim Management Team of the NDDC shall be in place till the forensic is completed, and that the supervision of the Commission shall remain under the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs,” statement said.

The Board, which was screened by the Senate on October 30, 2019, has not been inaugurated by the President, a situation that has raised a lot of dust from many stakeholders and groups in the Niger Delta region.

The Board has Dr Pius Odubu, from Edo State as Chairman; Chief Bernard Okumagba from Delta State as Managing Director; Mr Maxwell Omo from Bayelsa State as Executive Director, Finance and Administration; and Engr. Otobong Ndem as Executive Director, Projects.

Foreign AffairsNancy Pelosi Refuses To Commit To Sending Articles Of Impeachment To Senate by Ctorch(op): 7:16am On Dec 19, 2019
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not commit on Wednesday to sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, saying in a post-impeachment-vote news conference, "That would have been our intention, but we'll see what happens over there."

Some progressives have urged Democratic leaders to withhold the articles until Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, agrees to procedures for the Senate trial that Democrats have called for, as well as agreeing to bring in firsthand witnesses like acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to testify.

Pelosi said Democrats will make the decision "as a group" on when to send the articles to the Senate.

There are procedural concerns behind not sending the articles to the Senate on Wednesday night immediately after the votes. Among them: Democrats can't send the articles at this time because the Senate would have to take them up Thursday, blocking votes on other measures, including a spending package that must pass before week's end to avoid a government shutdown.

McConnell has openly sparred with his Democratic counterpart, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, over the format of the Senate trial. Earlier this week, McConnell rejected Schumer's call for four witnesses to testify.

In the coming days, the House must also name impeachment managers for the Senate's trial, another step Pelosi was not ready to make Wednesday night.

"We cannot name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side, and we hope that will be soon," Pelosi said. "So far we haven't seen anything that looks fair to us, so hopefully it will be fair."

McConnell told Republican senators at a policy lunch Tuesday that he will announce the date for the start of the Senate trial by the end of the week, according to sources.

It's unclear what advantages there would be to withholding the articles of impeachment from a Senate trial. When McConnell was asked this week about the possibility of articles not being sent over, he told reporters, "I'm in no hurry."

One Republican senator told CNN in a text message, "If the Speaker thinks this magically gives Democrats leverage in the Senate she hasn't been paying attention to how McConnell operates the last few decades."

CultureAdedotun Gbadebo, Abdulkabir Obalanlege Exchange Words Over Ogun Land by Ctorch(op): 6:36am On Dec 16, 2019
The Alake of Egbaland , Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, and the Olota of Ota , Prof . Abdulkabir Obalanlege, are set to clash over a disputed land in Iju - Atan in the Ado - Odo /Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State .

Following threats by both sides , anxiety has gripped residents of the disputed area which comprises six communities – Ajegunle , Onigbongbo , Ketu Oluyomi , Atan , Kooko and Iju .

Speaking on behalf of Egba , the Alatan of Atan , Oba Olatunji Oluyomi , who was installed by the Alake accused the Olota of Ota and two other monarchs of claiming ownership of the land which he said was not under their prescribed authority.
The Alake representative said the Olota in company with the Onilogbo of Ilogbo , Oba Samuel Ojugbele, and one other had allegedly taken possession of Egba land in the disputed area .

Oba Oluyomi further accused the Olota - in - Council of continuous trespassing despite several court judgments restraining them from the land .

The monarch explained that the Gbalefa was a portion of Egbaland , claiming that only the Alake , the paramount ruler of Egbaland had prescribed authority on the land based on the history of the community.

He said , “ The Olota and his subjects are using land grabbers to take over some of our land . We are trying to check them and this has made us write a series of letters to the government and police to notify them about the invaders .

“ We have five judgments that declared that the Olota does not have any power on Gbalefa , but it is as if the Olota , Onilogbo and Oniko are just taking the law into their own hands .

“ Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland remains the prescribed authority of Gbalefa peninsula and its environs based on the historical antecedents of Gbalefa peninsula .

“ Both the Ota and Gbalefa districts are under the control of Alake of Egbaland , but both are quite different from each other despite that they are both under the same Ado - Odo/ Ota Local Government. ”

He added , “ On the prescribed authority, the Alake of Egbaland has successfully installed about 25 Baales and seven chiefs in Gbalefa peninsula without any hindrance. ”

When contacted , the Olota of Ota insisted that there was nothing like Gbalefa land, describing it as a “ fraud. ”

He warned the Alake - in - council to desist from the attempt to take over the land that does not belong to it.

He added that the historical fact did not support the Egba claim .

He said , “ I must explain that my subjects will not quarrel over any land that does not belong to them so ; if they are allegedly quarrelling with anybody over a piece of land, it means the land belongs to them.

The monarch added , “ The security agencies are aware of the development and I want them to caution those causing confusion . ”
He challenged the Alake - in - council to produce the judgment that ordered it to take over the Ota land
He said the matter had been appealed and won, urging the security agencies to stop the Egba people from taking over the Ota land to avoid crisis .

PoliticsIYC To Wike: You Are Dancing On The Graves Of Our 42 Kinsmen by Ctorch(op): 10:13pm On Dec 15, 2019
The altercation between the Ijaw ethnic nationality and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, continued at the weekend following the attack on the governor by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide.

The IYC in a statement signed by the IYC Secretary-General, Mr. Alfred Kemepado, reminded Wike that 42 of its kinsmen in Rivers State died in the violence that characterized the election that made him a governor.

Kemepado, who issued the statement at Harry’s Town expressed disappointment that despite their death, Wike had yet to give them befitting burials.

He said by threatening to remove an Ijaw King in Rivers State, Wike was dancing on the graves of the 42 dead kinsmen.

He said the 42 dead bodies and more of Ijaw youths, who needed proper burial in the Buguma and Abonnema towns of Rivers State, were still waiting for the governor to bury them properly.

While commending Wike for visiting late Dr Ferry Gberegbe, a victim of such violence in Khana and donated about N200m, Kemepado, however, said not even a condolence letter had been sent to any of the victims in Abonnema, Buguma including Sister Ibisiki, who was also murdered in same manner in Degema.

He said: “The harmless youths were murdered by federal forces while they stood to defend the democracy that made Governor Wike the Governor of Rivers State.
“Up till date, a befitting burial has not been given to any of the Ijaw sons or even compensation to their families. Wike visited Late Dr Ferry Gberegbe, a victim of such violence in Khana and donated about N200m, which iscommendable, but not even a condolence letter has been sent to any of the victims in Abonnema, Buguma and our Sister Ibisiki who was also murdered in same manner in Degema.

“This act of disregard alone, demonstrates Wike’s disrespect and disregard for the lives of our people. Instead, Governor Wike is spitting on their graves by threatening to remove an Ijaw Monarch because of the Visit of Governor Dickson to the monarch over the death of his children”.

He reminded Wike that the traditional stool he desecrated through his public utterances was older than Rivers State adding that the Ijaw people were not subjects he could intimidate.

Kemepado said: “We want Governor Wike to note and abundantly so, that the traditional stools in Ijaw land are older than Rivers State where he is Governor and they should not be considered as subjects he can intimidate.

“Governor Wike should remember his own Ikwere tradition that prescribes respect for the elderly and traditional institutions, and should resist the temptation to overreach himself, but tame himself from being disrespectful and vulgar when addressing elders and traditional stools.

“Governor Wike should compensate the Ijaws with projects in Ijaw land because the Ijaws are the highest casualties in his bid to become Governor of Rivers State the second time.

“We call on Governor Wike to erect a memorial in honor of the Ijaw youths massacred for his sake and not insult Ijaw Monarchs. That until Wike apologises to the Ijaw Monarch he threatened and to all Ijaws, no Ijaw community and her people should take him and anything that comes from him serious”

PoliticsRe: CIVIL WAR: S-east, S-south Yet To Be Properly Reconciled With Nigeria—Ekpenyong by Ctorch(op): 9:02am On Dec 09, 2019
Continued....

On deplorable condition of Federal roads linking Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states

My question is are we part of Nigeria? That is one of the things we have to find out because when I was small, 13 years old, the war broke out, and they said ‘To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done’. We have joined to keep Nigeria one but I have not yet benefited from why I have to be part of Nigeria. Even when they said there was destruction, we have to Reconstruct, Rehabilitate, and there must be Reconciliation, 3R’s that were postulated by the General Yakubu Gowon government, not much has been done.
The entire Eastern Nigeria and what you call South-South today were all Easterners, and the war was prevalent there. The relics of the war have not been cleared The only bridge that links us with Umuahia was constructed by me in 2004. I spent N64million to do that, I only collected N30million from the Federal government. The contract was awarded by the then Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih of blessed memory at the cost of N49million and they managed to pay only N30million. Because there was no variation to the contract the company could not do the contract and abandoned it. I had to pledge my property to the bank, and borrowed money to make sure that bridge on the highway going to Umuahia was done.

Today the only road we are using now is the one that Governor Udom Emmanuel constructed for us at Nto Ndino; Ekwereazu to Nto Ndino, Nto Ndino to Nto Ndang to Umuahia road. People coming from the North, West to the South use that road, it is a local road.

So, my prayer is that let God touch the heart of President Muhammadu Buhari because he fought the war. I was watching the clips of the war heroes the other day and I saw him. He was very young then, fighting the war. I am praying that they should revisit the issue of the 3R’s- Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction. The entire Eastern Nigeria, which comprises South South, and South East today, have not been properly reconciled. We have not been reconstructed, we have not been rehabilitated because the relics of the war are lying everywhere. It is glaring.

Whatever is good for the goose is also good for the gander. If they say we have North East Development Commission, NEDC,to take care of the infrastructure deficit of the North-East, what about the South East? What about the South-South even though we for which that body was established, because it is supposed to be an interventionist agency that would strengthen, clear the mess, build up the Niger Delta so that we can also have a fair share of the resources of Nigeria.

Some people have said that we have recorded improvement in the security situation in the country in the past few months. Do you agree with that?

In your opinion as a Nigerian, a journalist, would you say we have experienced improved security? Well, in Akwa Ibom there is peace. I have not heard of alarming security infractions in Akwa Ibom because of the kind of governor we have. The governor is a godly man, and he knows his onions, he is prayerful and God responds to his prayers. So in Akwa Ibom there is no security infractions to an extent that is alarming but if in Enugu Reverend Fathers could be kidnapped, in Benin if a Judge of Court of Appeal could be kidnapped and held hostage for many weeks, would you say that we are in safe hands?
I think there is much to be done by the federal government. Just like we are talking about devolution of power, the security apparatus must be re-jigged, and to an extent the local police is one of the elements that will aid to curb the incessant breach of security.
For instance, in the North-East, I have been wondering, we have communal settings, people are living within the environment wouldn’t we know who the Boko Haram are and what are they looking for? Why this persistent war, that they are killing people every day? Through their action there is instability in the nation, and economic backwardness. So, we should find a complete solution to the issue. I was saying the other day, given the way they fought the war from 1967 to 1970, if that was in the 20th century, we are in the 21st century why couldn’t we have the sophisticated weapons to crush the Boko Haram in Sambisa forest so that we could bring about a rejuvenation of the nation, that will be moving somewhere without miscreants, without security infractions by people?

PoliticsCIVIL WAR: S-east, S-south Yet To Be Properly Reconciled With Nigeria—Ekpenyong by Ctorch(op): 8:57am On Dec 09, 2019
CIVIL WAR: S-East, S-South yet to be properly reconciled with Nigeria — Senator Ekpenyong

Senator Christopher Ekpenyong, former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State, was 13 years when the civil war started in 1967 and 16 when it ended in 1970. Senator Ekpenyong, who is awaiting a a court-ordered rerun in some polling areas in Ikot-Ekpene to resume his representation of Akwa Ibom North-West in the 9th Senate, says 49 years after the war the South-East and South-South, which formed Eastern Nigeria have not been properly reconciled with the rest of the country. In this interview, Ekpenyong also spoke on the Hate Speech bill before the Senate, and why restructuring of the country is necessary among others.

On his experience in the Senate so far

Having the experience of the Red Chamber of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is thrilling. You could see men of great integrity and also men that need reformation in character, and traits probably from their past experiences, and performances in public offices. You could see men who have contributed immensely to the growth of Nigeria. So I love to belong to such body, the experience is thrilling and it is interesting.

On his plans for his constituents in terms of projects if he returns after the rerun

You have to differentiate the activities of the Legislature from that of the executive. Primarily, the Legislature is a Law making institution. When you talk about constituency projects, I think you should look at it from the view of Mr. President saying that in the past 10 years that over one trillion naira had been spent on constituency projects and there is nothing to show for it.
I think in that case it is an indictment on the part of the executive and not on the part of the Legislature because the function of the Legislature is to make laws and probably to request for the entrenchment of projects which they believe would have impact on the lives of the people of their constituencies. The implementer is always the executive.
From what I saw that my predecessor (Godswill Akpabio) incorporated as constituency projects, up till now the money has not been released, the boreholes have not been drilled, the village Hall that he also proposed for one of the areas in Okon has not been built. So you can’t blame the Legislature, the blame should go to the implementer, which is the executive. When the corresponding money or resources is not made available, you don’t blame the legislator.
On my plans, I have come to inherit 2019 budget and though my predecessor who is now the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs had already galvanized the projects, and even defined the location which is within his own ward, and contiguous villages, the money has not been released.
In 2020 budget, based on the fact that I had traversed the entire 1,123 units, and 108 wards in my area of jurisdiction, I have tried to see what could be done in schools, farms, roads, erosion-attacked environments such as Nko, Esa Atan in Ikot Ekpene, the one at Nto-Ekpe up to Usaka in Obot Akara, the spring road in Ikot Ekpene and then the road linking Amanyam community- Ikot Ukpong and the rest in Obot Akara and Ikot Ekpene. In Ini local government you talk about large farmlands that have been completely eroded by erosion. I have tried to see what I can do to leverage the lifestyle in these areas, but that is within the 2020 budget that has just been passed.
However, when the budget is signed by the President and the resources in terms of cash-backing made available, the impact will be made. In the area of training, there will be training to build capacity, and aid wealth creation. Whether these visions, ideas will be translated and factored into the economic resources depends on money for the implementation of those constituency projects. When that is done, life will be better for the beneficiaries.

Many Nigerians have this impression that only ranking senators enjoy certain privileges like attracting projects to their people. As a first timer, what is your take on this?

I am ranking lawmaker by age. I was state legislator when I was 28 years-old in the then Cross River State on the platform of NPN. Aside that, I was a deputy governor for six years, one month and five days. I have had experience in public service and private life, I am an employer of Labour. Aside politics I am one of the foremost entrepreneur’s in this state and I have over 200 workers that are on my payroll. So I think the Senate President and the Senate in their wisdom felt that I am capable.
I am honoured to be there in the Senate. I belong to nine Committees. One is the Army. I belong to the Local Content Committee, I also belong to Establishment and Public Service Committee, I belong to the Culture and tourism Committee; Downstream Petroleum Committee. I am also Vice Chairman of Water Resources Committee. A lot of variables had been considered in putting me wherever I am, and making me a Vice Chairman of a Committee.

How do you manage these two responsibilities, business and politics?

I wouldn’t say because I am given this assignment of representation that I have to jettison what I have nurtured in the years past. Over the years I have always been in business. Even when I was a deputy governor my ventures were all going, and to an extent aided in human capacity development, and wealth creation. So, why would I kill my ventures because I am in the Senate? The Eemjm Hotel is still going on, the JAC farms is still going on. We are into poultry farming, palm oil processing, we also plant and process rice. I have over 90 hectares of rice farm in Ini local government area. We are harvesting now. Last year we sold our rice at N16,000 a bag. Hopefully we will try to see how we can minimize the cost to suit the intention of the President, even though we’ve not been in any way touched by the funding that the president had given out to those who are into rice farming.
I think predominantly the beneficiaries are in the North. Most of us down South, particularly South-South are not benefiting from that because they choose to exclude us; that they don’t know we also grow rice here. I am growing rice and that is why I am much particular about the Nkari Dam that was established in 2000. The contract was awarded in 2001 but up till today much has not been done. What we have in the 2020 budget is just N105million as against the contract sum that was reviewed last year to N5.7billion. So if we want to be serious, the Nkari Dam must also be considered like any other Dam in the northern part of Nigeria, to provide water for agriculture and for consumption.

On the Hate speech bill
At the first hearing and presentation of that bill, I tried to question the composition. What is the content? I have been told by my Secretary that the content of the bill has been made available and it is in my office. Since I am returning to the Senate on Tuesday, I will take a look at it. And good enough it has passed through the second reading, it is now at the Committee level where people will be invited to public hearing, I will listen and understand deeply the intent of that bill. If it is going to injure the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which allows freedom of expression, it will be anti-people.
So I will air my view at the public hearing but we should mitigate the issue of death sentence, after all government is a continuum. Today it is the turn of APC in government. When they were also saying that the PDP government was doing this and doing that, nobody initiated death sentence.

On restructuring and devolution of powers to the federating units

People probably misconstrue the issue. We are not talking of dismemberment of Nigeria, we are talking of devolution of powers. The Federal government is very far away from the people. Look at our roads, we don’t have roads. What if we allow state government to construct roads? For instance, the Borno State governor will have to construct road to link with the next state, the next state governor will construct road from his state to next state, and the next will continue that way, so there will be no gap. We know that for us to have economic renaissance or integration we must have sound transportation system and such transportation system will be having good roads, rail lines, Marine transportation. So, we must devolve power.
The Federal government is still talking about food security when they don’t have control on land. The ownership of land is vested on the state government, so why don’t you give more resources so that the practice of agriculture can be more enhanced at the state and even local government levels?
I think the federal government should concentrate on the management of the Armed Forces, it should concern itself with the communication system, to make sure we have adequate cross -communications. That is what federal government should do and allow the states handle healthcare, agriculture, education, road constructions, etc.

PoliticsAmaechi Madrid Attack: ‘if IPOB Touch That Man I Will Be Very Angry’ by Ctorch(op):
The minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi who was in Madrid, Spain for a Climate Change event escaped being injured on Friday when he was attacked by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

IPOB group which claimed responsibility for the attack stated in a press statement seen by Vanguard that it is acting in line with the order given by their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group also vowed to treat all politicians it assumed to be corrupt the same way. This was akin to a similitude attack on the former deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu in Germany.
The office of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has condemned the attack on the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi in Madrid, Spain while on a national assignment.
The Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s Office said the Nigerian mission and the Spanish Police are handling the matter swiftly and promptly.

However, following the publication of the news on Vanguard Website and our social media pages, Nigerians appear to have mixed reactions to the report.

Vanguard’s Facebook Followers Reactions

A user by the name Ngwoke Geoffrey reacting to the minister’s rescue by the Spanish police commented: “The animal that escapes being entrapped today will definitely not going to escape another trap tomorrow, so says our local proverb.”

Another user D Turn Byturn commented “We r ipob we r everywhere on dis earth don’t mess with US.”

Yemi Ogundeji denouncing the action of the IPOB members commented; “Most of them didn’t have visa, deportation loading.”

Mirian Chidera “Do you like suffering and smiling abeg raise up your hand let’s start counting. If we can’t confront our politicians of there wrongs here in Nigeria, our people in diaspora are helping us confront them. So why the noise eh! Abeg the heat is too much, everybody face front.”

Raheem Ganiy Babatunde “Why all this the ipob always act like criminal!! Is this how they will govern themselves if eventually get a chance to rule themselves it’s unfortunate what a confused set of people.”

Nonso in suggestion said; “This shouldn’t be an IPOB thing. If any Nigerian find these men outside the country, ask them questions. Make the video. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.”

Taff Aj “Is this how u ll keep on attacking them in all parts of the World?, with dis I don’t see u achieving ur aim any time soon, why not come to 9ja ND attack them?.. Jst an advice..”

A user Bro Joe who was in doubt the attack was indeed carried out by IPOB members commented, “Brown envelope media.. So only IPOB are only Nigerians living abroad, right?”. However, Vanguard had reported a press statement by the IPOB Group Confirming Its Members Attacked The Minister.

Mark Fidelis “If ipob touch that man I will be very angry”

Jamilu Idris Muhammad jokingly commented “Why is someone that’s not a Nigerian attacking Nigerian? Ipob are not Nigerian so what’s their problem with Nigerian? This is xenophobia oo”

Taking the defensive stand, Don Alex said “What did Ameachi do? The other day, it was Prof Ekweremadu and today, it’s Amaechi. You guys should stop embarrassing our leaders outside Nigeria.”

Seyi Oduleye
“This is good for them.. extend the attack to all of them, not easterners alone. They can see how abroad look like compared to where they are fortunate to govern. Yeye bunch of leaders.”

Dèxtér Ñ Sàmmý “I hereby donate koboko to IPOB, please dont kill them, just flog & beat them up, Nigerian useless corrupt politicians..”

PoliticsCourt Orders AMCON To Pay N26.5B To Ifeanyi Ubah's Firm by Ctorch(op): 12:09pm On Dec 07, 2019
Court orders AMCON to pay N26.5B to Ifeanyi Ubah's firm

10/06/2016 | GBENGA BADA

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to pay Capital Oil and Gas Industry Limited N26.5 billion as contained in a consent judgment delivered in 2013.
Justice Abdul Kafarati, in his judgment, held that the court had powers to enforce its judgment or that of any lower courts in the country.

“An order is granted for AMCON to provide Trade Finance Facility in the sum of N16 billion for revamping of the plaintiff’s business and to pay the plaintiff’s trade creditors.
“I also grant an order compelling the defendant to comply with the consent judgment and to make the additional sum of N10.5 billion available to the plaintiff.
“This money is the payment of sundry creditors who continue to threaten the plaintiff’s business.,” Kafarati held.
Kafarati also restrained AMCON from exercising any powers over Capital Oil and Gas Limited and its assets.
These, according to him, include attempts at processing any assignment or transferring same on behalf of the company.
A Federal High Court in Lagos on May 6 struck out the suit brought by AMCON against Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited on these issues.

The court held that the suit was premature and could circumvent pending suits relating to the alleged indebtedness of Capital Oil and Gas Limited.

The plaintiff (Capital Oil and Gas Industry Limited) had approached the court to decide whether having regards to the consent judgment, AMCON was not under obligation to restructure its debt.
The plaintiff also asked the court to decide whether the actions of the defendant and agreements reached by parties since the consent judgment did not constitute a waiver of the requirement for compliance.
The court was also asked to decide whether the defendant was not wrong to have failed to restructure the plaintiff’s debt.
The plaintiff further sought the determination of the court whether if the defendant did not by its action fail to avail it trade facility in the sum of N16 billion to pay its trade creditor.

Reacting to the judgment, Mr Ajibola Oluyede, counsel to the plaintiff, described it as a landmark decision.
He,therefore, urged the defendant to accept the judgment, adding that such step would encourage growth of private businesses in the country.
PoliticsIsrael Kanu Is Dead! Nnamdi Kanu's Father Dies by Ctorch(op): 5:09pm On Dec 06, 2019
The death of Eze Israel Kanu, father of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu, has been announced.

This is coming four months after his mother, Ugoeze Sally Kanu, also died.

Eze Kanu was the traditional ruler of Afara Ukwu Umuahia community till his death.

The traditional council of his community led by Edward Ibeabuchi has confirmed his death.

Eze Kanu has not been seen in the public since September 2017, after a detachment of soldiers raided his palace.

One of his sons, Emmanuel, also confirmed the demise of his father.

Reacting to the news, the Abia State commissioner for information, John Okiyi Kalu, described Kanu’s death as a huge loss to the state.

He said, “It was with rude shock that we learnt of the passing on of one of our great royal fathers, HRM Eze Sir I.O. Kanu, the Egwu Ukwu II of Afaraukwu Ibeku, at the age of 86 years.

“His unwavering love and sterling contributions to the development of his community in particular, and Abia State in general are well documented. No doubt, HRM left a lasting legacy and an indelible impression on the minds of Ndigbo everywhere in the world.

“Death is not the end of man but a necessary passage to a better place in eternity where there is no strife, sorrow or pain. Indeed, Papa has only gone to that better place.

“This should be our consolation so that his beloved family and the community he left behind do not continue to weep since we all know that he is resting peacefully now.

“As a government, we assure the family of late Eze Sir I.O. Kanu and Afaraukwu community of our continued support in all ways we can to help ameliorate the pains of his departure.”

$20m indictment: We stand with Onyema –South East Governors

The South East Governors Forum has come out in support of the Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, over his indictment by the United States Department of Justice for allegedly laundering $20 million.

A statement signed by Governors Ifeanyi Uguwanyi (Enugu), Willie Obiano (Anambra), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Emeka Ihedioha (Imo) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), said even though the forum cannot claim to have the full knowledge of the matter, there are some insinuations it will not accept.

The forum said the insinuation that some government officials are against Onyema and would want to pull him down is a ploy to instigate hatred against him as he is ‘at peace’ with the Federal Government and has on various occasions, commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for assisting him get up to five international licenses.

The governors urged Buhari to support and protect Onyema to enable him sort out the matter peacefully so that his business, which t has contributed to the growth of the aviation industry will not suffer. The statement reads: “We have read a lot of comments by various individuals and interest groups on the matter.

“The insinuation that some Nigerians or some government officials are against Onyema and would want to pull him down by all means is a ploy to instigate hatred against him. He has remained in the aviation industry which is highly challenging in our country when many people could not cope.

Onyema is at peace with the Federal Government and has on various occasions, commended the president for assisting him get up to five international licenses. Many officials of Buhari’s administration had stood for him many times in promoting and encouraging Air Peace operations in and outside Nigeria.

Air Peace is a business and most businesses usually have one issue or the other to settle and this one is not an exception. We plead with Buhari to please continue to give Onyema all the necessary support and protection to enable him sort out this matter peacefully.

Onyema has highly assisted the aviation industry in Nigeria and we must all stand to defend this business. The governors of the South East will do everything within the law to support Onyema overcome this issue so as to continue to offer more excellent services to Nigeria. We request the US Ambassador to Nigeria to please step into the matter so as to peacefully resolve the issue without destroying Onyema’s reputation. We also urge Onyema to engage experienced and external financial managers to work with the US government in resolving and rectifying his business tax matter if any.”

Onyema is accused by the US authorities for allegedly laundering over $20 million from Nigeria through United States bank accounts in a scheme involving false documents for the purchase of airplanes

President of IYC, Pereotubo Oweilami, in a statement, yesterday, said, “President Buhari despite spending four years in government is still treating some parts of the country below the belt. His policies and programmes are not for the benefit of the South-South and the South-East parts of the country.’

“It seems Buhari is still ruling this country along voters dichotomy. Just recently on Wednesday the 27th of November, 2019, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the sum of N19b to construct roads in northern and western parts of the Country.

“Despite the deplorable states of the federal roads in the Niger Delta region, none was considered by FEC. East-West road, Warri-Benin road, Benin Asaba road amongst many others are now death traps to road users.

”In fact, movement from Warri to Benin federal highway has been cut off as the road is completely damaged. Similarly, the East-West road is no longer motorable as some portions of the road, especially from Bayelsa to Rivers State axis have been damaged.

“Regrettably, these are the only roads that connect the Niger Delta to other regions. Even the Minister of Works is paying lip service to our plight as commuters are undergoing excruciating pains and agonies in plying these roads.

Babatunde Fashola’s reference to the deplorable state of the Warri-Benin road as a mere media hype is an insult to the Niger Delta people.
“If the South-South or the Niger Delta region is part of Nigeria, then President Buhari, his Minister of Works, Raji Babatunde Fashola, SAN, and other top government functionaries should take a visit to the roads in the region from Cross River State down to Edo State and see things for themselves.

From the way and manner the present government implements its policies and programmes, it appears that Buhari did not see Niger Delta region as part of Nigeria.

‘The East-West road project which was awarded since 2006 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been completely abandoned by Buhari’s government. The present government has displayed an unmitigated hatred for the Niger Delta people, perhaps due to our political leaning in the past elections.

‘Niger Delta people cannot fold their arms and allow the government to use the resources from their land to develop other regions, while they watch with grimace faces. The present government should not by act or omission incite Nigerians against one another. You cannot claim to be propagating one Nigeria dream when some parts of the country are not feeling the dividends of democracy under your watch.

‘The ruling government should have a rethink of its policies and programmes. The President’s actions and body language are polarising this country along political-cum ethno-religious lines. He should be a uniting factor and not one that keeps Nigerians further divided.

“If Buhari kept on allowing this political apathy and alienations against Niger Delta people to fester, then we are afraid that the existing peace in the oil sector may not be sustained in the long run.

“The signs are just there, staring us in the face. Mr President should save this country from another economic crisis in the oil sector. Nigeria belongs to all of us. We all have equal rights to development if we must continue to live as united partners” he asserted.

PoliticsWike To Punch : Rivers Remains A Christian State by Ctorch(op): 7:32pm On Dec 01, 2019
Punch Newspaper's Hypocritical Declaration on Rivers State

By Simeon Nwakaudu

I am surprised that it took Punch Newspaper so long to make their declaration against Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. So when I saw their editorial of Sunday, December 1, 2019 taking a position on Rivers State, I took it as one of their promotional activities for those that sponsor them.

Imagine a newspaper and the day it chose to make the declaration: "Rivers State is not a Christian State, Wike." They carefully chose a Sunday and the very beginning of the Christmas Period to make their Hypocritical Declaration. It is an editorial laden birthed in negativity, with virtually nothing to do with social good.

For the Punch, their courage is usually politically targeted and aimed at pleasing specific sections of the country. They are also always intent on satisfying a particular political party.

In the editorial where Punch Newspaper "boldly " lambasted the Rivers State Governor, it failed woefully to mention states that have declared Islam as their official State Religion. They failed to mention states that officially practice Sharia as approved by their Respective State Houses of Assembly. They merely played the Ostrich in this regard, as their goal was obvious.

Earlier this year, Punch Newspaper was compelled by public outcry to sack its daily and Saturday editors because of the Newspaper's ugly foray into the issues of Christianity.

It strategically published on its back page a cartoon of a man desecrating the Bible with urine. All the Newspaper focused on was to denigrate an entire religion, simply because there was a scandal involving a cleric. They ate the humble pie after leaders of the Christian Faith protested vehemently.

The declaration that Rivers State is a Christian State is within the purview of Governor Wike to make as the elected leader of the state with the mandate of the people.

This declaration does not in any way take away the rights of other Rivers people and residents to practice other religions as they deem fit. On several occasions, Governor Wike personally explained this fact.

The hypocrisy of Punch Newspaper is both nauseating and provocative. To say the least, it is unfortunate. The intent is clear. To pitch Governor Wike against other Nigerians of other faiths, while pretending to be engaged in social advocacy.

Indeed, the Punch Newspaper's Editorial of December 1, 2019 is in bad taste and was clearly politically motivated and orchestrated to serve ugly purposes.

When it comes to a declaration that Rivers State is a Christian State, Punch Newspaper jumps to assume a Non-Existent Jurisdiction to declare that it is not. In one breadth it quotes a section of the constitution to say that Nigeria is a secular country and in another breadth the same Newspaper declares that the Nigerian Federal Government recognises two major religions.

Embedded in the Nigerian Constitution is the right to freedom of religion. That right is promoted and protected by the Rivers State Government under the leadership of Governor Wike. It is still under this constitutional right that an overwhelming majority of Rivers people are Christians.

Punch Newspaper in its usual politically motivated bias refused to highlight that the Rivers State Government operates Rivers State Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board to cater for the pilgrimage needs of Muslims in the State. A Rivers Indigene, Alhaji Abdulrazak Deprieye is the Sole Administrator of Rivers State Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board .

We are already accustomed to Punch Newspaper's partisanship. When the falsehood on the alleged demolition of a Non-Existent Mosque was circulated by some politicians, Punch Newspaper was one of the newspapers that celebrated the concocted and misleading report. When the truth came to the fore, Punch Newspaper made no attempt publish declarative reports about the truth.

Whenever there are security infractions in Rivers State, Punch Newspaper celebrates as if Rivers lives don't matter. If cultists clash in a community in Khana LGA for instance, Punch Newspaper would scream "Rivers of Blood". If there is an issue of security breach in a village in Emohua LGA, Punch would scream "Rivers Violence ". Majority of Punch Security reports on Rivers State are geared towards de-marketing the state. Of course, they have Rivers APC leaders as their collaborators. Rivers reports that make front page on Punch are usually the reports deliberately placed to de-market the state.

But if similar stories break in other states of geo-political zones that are aligned with their political inclination, Punch Newspaper becomes professional.

When the developments are positive about Rivers State and the State Government, Punch Newspaper usually looks the other way. If the attention of her representatives are drawn to this ugly development, they insist that it is the paper's policy.

It is that partisanship that has led to this misadventure by Punch Newspaper's Editorial Board. On what premise would an editorial board declare that Rivers State is not a Christian State?

Has the Punch Editorial Board become the Rivers State Executive Council or the Rivers State House of Assembly or even the elected Council Chairmen of Rivers State? Are members of Punch Editorial Board now elected councillors of Rivers State? On what platform can they counter Governor Wike who holds the mandate of Rivers people?

So Punch Newspaper is comfortable to say that the country is a secular state where there are constitutionally recognized Grand Khadis and Sharia Courts in different parts of the country? Governor Wike's Declaration that Rivers State is a Christian State is the REALITY. The truth of the matter. Governor Wike is a frank politician who believes in the truth.

Personally, I see the editorial by Punch Newspaper as a failed attempt at political correctness.

But I want to suggest to the Editorial Board of Punch Newspaper to take deliberate steps to be balanced in their coverage of all political parties and geo-political zones. For now, the newspaper is far from getting it right when it comes to balanced reporting. You cannot shut out positives on certain political inclinations and sing the praise of others.

Most importantly, Punch Newspaper must desist from this outdated mode of profiling politicians not within their political group. It is impossible for everyone to belong to one political movement.

In all, the ill-conceived Punch Newspaper's Editorial of December 1, 2019 is dead on arrival. It is a political effort that has failed like several other negative media campaigns against Governor Wike.

PoliticsRivers Is Not A Christian State, Wike - Punch Editorial by Ctorch(op): 5:38pm On Dec 01, 2019
It was earlier this year that Wike first declared Rivers a Christian state, a claim he repeated recently at a church event in Port Harcourt, the state capital. Combative as usual, he said, “I repeat the declaration with authority and I owe nobody an apology; Rivers is a Christian state”.

The governor did not explain whether he was referring to majority of the state’s residents being Christians or to recognising it as state religion. The latter is explicitly forbidden by the 1999 Constitution, while the context in which the statements were made negated his official position that demands neutrality and that he be a father to all residents of the South-South state.

The assertion should also be situated within the sectarian tensions that have wracked Nigeria for decades, resulting in mutual hostility and frequent blood spilling. Evidence of widespread sectarian suspicion surfaced in Rivers in August when a routine demolition of illegal structures led to rumours, later found to be unfounded, that a mosque was targeted. The 1999 Constitution is unambiguous, declaring in Section 10 that “The Government of the Federation or a State shall not adopt any Religion as State Religion”. At the same time, Section 38 reinforces the right of every Nigerian to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The responsibility of the federal and state governments is to guarantee freedom of worship, including the right not to profess any faith.

Those tempted to cheer Wike today in response to having persistently suffered from exclusionary religious policies from other faiths should pause; two wrongs never make a right. Endorsing injustice today means accepting it later from other actors. Hypocrisy too has been on display; some groups in the North and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state, who have been recklessly promoting exclusionary religious policies too, rose to criticise Wike.

The Rivers provocation is however minor when placed alongside the travesty inflicted on Nigerians by successive federal administrations and many state governments. While the Federal Government continues to overtly promote two faiths – Islam and Christianity – to the exclusion of others, including spending large sums on funding pilgrimages, most state governments have spent scarce resources on religious activities, while poverty, insecurity and economic ruin pervade their territories. Twelve northern states have taken this impunity to the limit by introducing penal aspects of Islamic Sharia law, setting up religious vigilantes, segregating citizens and destroying consignments of alcoholic beverages, whose production, distribution and consumption are legitimate means of livelihood.

Intolerance, helped along by elite connivance, has taken a heavy toll on lives, property, the economy and national cohesion. The National Security Tracker, by the think tank, Council of Foreign Relations, recorded 2,037 deaths from sectarian and communal (that often assume sectarian hue) violence in 2018, up from 1,041 killed in 2017. It is a long-running trend, especially in the Northern states where religious intolerance and state partisanship are most brazen. The United States Council on International Religious Freedom said about 10,000 persons perished in attacks and reprisals between Muslims and Christians in the 10 years to 2008.

The World Atlas/World Facts resource defines a secular state as one where the state is kept separate from religion and state does not interfere in religious affairs so long as laws are adhered to. It identifies 96 secular states around the world. Researchers have found a convergence between stability, prosperity and states that actively practice and promote separation of religion and the state. It is no coincidence that the most stable countries ranked on the Fragile States Index 2019 like Finland, Norway, Switzerland and Denmark are decidedly secular states, while the most wretched like Yemen, Somalia and Afghanistan, are failed or failing states riven by violent religious factions and state promotion of religion. Once stable Syria and Iraq, whose respective Baathist parties promoted secular ideals, have since plunged into horrific civil wars made intractable by religious factions where state sectarianism takes centre stage.

Wisely, though their monarchs are, or were, also constitutionally, heads of the Church of England and Church of Norway (until 2017) respectively, the United Kingdom and Norway are scrupulously secular states. The 12 states that have been most unrestrained in promoting religion in Nigeria are also largely the most wretched. A joint report by the UNDP and National Bureau of Statistics ranked Sokoto, Jigawa and Yobe in 2017 as having the highest poverty incidence. The North-East has been laid low by Islamic terrorism for a decade. Though they divert scarce resources to religion, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug abuse, vices that were once higher in southern states, have rendered swathes of the northern states now inhospitable. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NBS and the Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse reported rising incidence of drug abuse in the northern states, including among women. Insecurity is rampant in Rivers, many youths jobless and infrastructure broken – these deserve Wike’s full attention. State immersion in religion guarantees neither peace nor morality.

There should be a change of focus by state governments to improving the lives of people. Ganduje, who has just unwisely created a ministry of religious affairs, should tackle poverty, drug abuse and rehabilitate the three million child beggars he once said roamed the streets. Wike needs to tame violence in Rivers, while all 36 states, to survive and mop up the millions of their unemployed youths, should devote all energy towards transforming into vibrant economic units.

Politicians should stop the cynical manipulation of religion for political ends, guarantee Nigeria’s secularity and forge an inclusive polity that accommodates and creates equal opportunities for all, irrespective of ethnic nationality or faith.

PoliticsSSS Withdraws Access Tags From Osinbajo's 'sacked' Aides by Ctorch(op): 4:06pm On Nov 29, 2019
SSS withdraws access tags from Osinbajo's 'sacked' aides

The State Security Service (SSS) has withdrawn access tags from about 35 aides of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who were affected by the controversial dismissal earlier this month, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The SSS started withdrawing passes from the aides on November 21, and even went further to blacklist some of them from future access into the Presidential Villa, according to multiple sources speaking with PREMIUM TIMES on the development.

When President Muhammadu Buhari returned from his private stay in London earlier this month, one of his first actions was to speak about the sack of the aides working with Mr Osinbajo.

Mr Buhari said it was part of re-organisation “aimed at enhancing service delivery to Nigerians”.

The president, while taking questions from reporters as he touched down in Abuja on November 16, also decried “ethnic and political dimension” given to the exercise.

The staff members were initially reported sacked on November 6. Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu confirmed it on November 8.

“The exercise, which has been ordered by the president, is to streamline decision-making, cut down multiple authorities and reduce the cost of administration,” Mr Shehu said. “It is also an appropriate response to the general perception that the presidency has an oversized and bloated workforce which acts as a drag on efficiency.”

While Mr Shehu claimed the action was aimed at cutting cost for the government, most of the affected aides were engaged and paid by development partners. They were only sent to the vice-president’s office as part of several social programmes supported through public-private partnerships.

Despite presidential confirmation that employment of some vice-president’s aides had been terminated, none of the affected officials received a formal communication to that effect.

About 35 officials distributed across several departments attached to the vice president’s office were reportedly affected by the dismissal. Their sack letters had been given to Mr Osinbajo, who withheld them and asked the aides to continue working in their respective roles until the president returns from London, PREMIUM TIMES learnt from those familiar with the matter at the time.

Mr Osinbajo had protested the dismissal of his aides without prior consultation with him by the president’s chief of staff, Abba Kyari. The vice president planned to convince the president to keep the aides in place because their roles were crucial and funded by donor private organisations and not public treasury, sources told PREMIUM TIMES.

‘Situation critical’
But two weeks after the president returned, a spectre of uncertainty still loomed over the aides’ employment status, with the situation deteriorating by the day, officials told PREMIUM TIMES.

“They started withdrawing their tags last week Thursday (November 21) and by this Wednesday (November 27) they have withdrawn everyone’s tag,” a senior presidency source told PREMIUM TIMES under strict anonymity to avoid being rebuked for speaking to journalists without permission. “Effectively, they have taken away their official roles, they can no longer act in an official capacity.”

The official said some of the aides were blacklisted by the SSS even after their tags were withdrawn.

“What this means is that they can not even come to the Presidential Villa again even as visitors,” the official said.

PREMIUM TIMES has not been able to independently verify this.

The source insisted Mr Buhari did not authorise the dismissal of the aides, but the expectation that Mr Osinbajo would be able to convince his boss to rescind the decision upon his return from London has been largely futile.

“The president did not authorise dismissal of the aides,” the source said. “He only authorised their redeployment to order agencies outside of the vice-president’s office.”

But Mr Kyari decided to issue letters dismissing the aides, and by the time the president returned, it was virtually too late to reverse the decision, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

“The vice president has decided not to relate with Abba Kyari over the matter, but even his direct discussions with the president about the issue have been too slow and too difficult than we expected,” another official said.

Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu did not return requests for comments Friday afternoon. Peter Afunanya, chief spokesperson from the SSS, also declined comments about the secret police’s role in the controversy.

Although the names of affected aides have not been officially disclosed, PREMIUM TIMES has identified some of them. and reached out for comments, but they declined.

A senior administration official told PREMIUM TIMES the aides were still working with the vice-president and remained on the payroll of their respective donor agencies.

“Even though they have been officially sacked by the presidency, they still continue to work for the vice-president and the donor agencies are paying them in that capacity,” the official said. “But many of them are becoming increasingly demoralised by the political games that now overshadow their carriers.”
