bracelum:
Check the on-campus recruitment opportunities for YOUR PROGRAM (not your school). If your program attracts companies to recruit specifically from your class, then the loan might not be a bad idea.

You won't have to worry about the job search. All you will have to do is resume, face your studies, prepare for interviews and when the companies visit your class, you apply, get interviews and get hired.

But if your program does not attract employers, then a loan might not be a good idea.

Another option is checking if your program or department has lots of alums in your desired companies. If they do, then that might also work but the stress might be slightly higher than when you have companies visiting.
great feedback

Do you have any means of repaying the loan back ?
not me just trying to find people's opinions about it. Because most Indians I have met don't think twice in considering taking a loan ( betting on themselves) to go to a top school/ivy but I know Nigerians are kinda laid back when it comes to taking a loan that much on nothing more than future projections.

Proper research needs to be done... some schools have powerful or good recruitment for post graduation that for such schools then it yes

Some good schools and only good in names ... you realise after your program it really hasnt given you any edge.

Also it depends on the program so it not a clear cut.
hmm so true thanks

Hmm. I think it depends on the program you're going for and the job prospects it provides upon completion. An MBA program for instance in a good school has a good ROI so you can pay off the loan in no time. Same goes for an engineering/computer science course and some science courses.

The only hurdle I see is convincing the VO but I know some people who've obtained visas with loans so I don't think this should be that much of a problem.

I was offered an application fee waiver for an MBA from a top 50 school so I just thought to apply, the worst that could happen was a denial, right? I was offered admission with partial funding and i would consider seeking for a loan too if I decide to pursue an MBA over my MS/PhD applications. When that time comes.
sure I hold a similar position especially for MBAadmission and CS programs in top schools

Guys quick question what are your thoughts on taking a loan to go to a great school? Worth it or not?

Hi guys, do we have peeps on here that school in Tennessee? I just moved down to this state and I’m really struggling to find Nigerians around. I have lived in Houston for the most part of my stay in this country and trying to get use to not seeing a lot of Nigerians and eating Naija food like we do in Houston is making me feel sick. It feels like I just got to the USA yesterday. I know a lot of people on here got admitted to schools in Tennessee a couple of years ago, but I’m not sure of what the situation is currently. I will like to connect with peeps already here in Tennessee or those planning to further their studies in this part of the country. I definitely can help out for a couple of days if anyone needs a place to stay. Glad this thread is still relevant!!!
where in Tennessee are you staying? Nashville? mufresboro? Cookie ville? Etc

Do they charge anything for transaction?
nope I guess they make their money from currency exchange rate which is fair. Also they charge I think 100-150naira if you want to transfer the money from the dollar card back to your original naira bank account.

download getbarter from play store register and and create a getbarter dollar card to make your transaction or use a gtbank card/access. Be careful of sending money to people to make payments for you. People have complained on this thread of being scammed.

Who told you so? Nigerians apply to Ivy leagues well. Harvard won't admit you without subject tests. Yes,diversity play a role, but not after your score is competitive for Harvard. Somebody got into Caltech and MIT in 2007 here on Nairaland. Guess what his SAT score was? 2370/2400. Somebody up there mentioned that he was also applying to Harvard until he saw that subject tests are REQUIRED. You need atleast two to get to Harvard. They don't care if you come from the jungle.
lol noted.

I've watched admission reactions of Asians not getting accepted with SATscores of 1570+ and 3 subject tests some with even perfect scores. These guys don't even apply with their national exams. They take APs and ace them. I hope this boy knows what he saying sha because I'm surprised he got into Harvard without spanking 1500+ and subject tests. That score isn't even in the mid 50% for ivy leagues
diversity could come to play sincerely. Most Africans (not diaspora) don't apply to Harvard for UG

Hey! Guys, I need help from anyone who has been an undergraduate in the USA. I'm a continued undergraduate student in the US. My DSO keeps asking me for bank statement or proof of ability to pay in order to update my SEVIS record every semester. I don't owe any money so far. But is this request right? I'm the only international student in my school, it's a small school. I'm enrolled full-time. I pay my tuition as cash comes but no large sum of money kept anywhere to show. What if I don't show her this semester, she will refuse to update my SEVIS record and I will become illegal. Is this the same requirement in other schools before your SEVIS is updated.
what have you been showing her all these while?

I applied to Harvard University and brown University for undergraduate..no scholarship was given to me ...I emailed the both school yet no reply, I wonder why my case is always different from other people's own because I haven't seen anyone without tuition waiver here.harvard is actually my top choice so I want to know if I can take loan while studying since my parent can't afford the fees ..I don't want to miss this opportunity because it cost me lot of money , interview and stress to get those admissions .I used my school account to get my i20 ..I've been disturbing them but brown University threatened to withdraw my admission if I can't finance my education, so I have no choice than to free them. I really want to attend Harvard cause it has been my dream school and I know it will expose me to so many opportunities .please is there any other means I can finance my education apart from taking loan ?
I finished school last year
I got 1256 in sat and 99 in TOEFL still no tuition waiver
I am 17 years old boy and very brilliant
when you applied to Harvard, did you demonstrate that you would need funding if taken? The only way Harvard won't fund you is if you demonstrate otherwise.

Hello guys can you tell your school to send a letter to the embassy to issue you visa once they give you admission because i have a friend who said the school sent the embassy a letter to issue her visa.. Dont Know how true this is..so i want to confirm from the house. Thanks. I'm on the verge on mailing my program director if they can issue a letter to the embassy, i was denied dec 12 and i dropped my transcript here.
yeah read this on quora sometimes back. Happened to a Nigerian too. He was denied visa to Columbia University. Then the school wrote to the embassy and he was given the visa.

Well, If am you, I will avoid schools under ACICS as their accreditation were revoked in 2016 and later reinstated temporarily in April 2018. Students going to the embassy with those schools might get visa refusal as ACICS recognition isn't in full force yet.

Here is a link to know schools under ACICS :

http://personify.acics.org/ACICSMemberDirectory.aspx

Some of the popular ones used by Nigerians are:

1. iGlobal University
2. Virginia International University
3. California Miramar University
4. Northwestern Polytechnic University
5. Bryan University
6. Lincoln University, CA
7. Colorado Heights University
8. Stratford University
9. Pacific Institute of Technology
10. University of North America
11. Texas Health and Science University

Here is the announcement of Department of Education on this issue.

https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/2016/12/acics-loss-of-accreditation-what-it-means-for-schools-and-international-students

My advise is for students is to avoid schools under ACICS until it's fully recognised by the U.S Department of Education
this is great info!

Hello house, the statement of account I intend to use is an account set aside a few years ago by my Grandma towards my education. Is this good enough? P.S, she is retired
I doubt it would be a problem, there are gift deeds and education savings that some families keep aside for their kids.
