So I have been trying to use the Magoosh flash cards application to learn the vocabularies in preparation for my exam, I realised it was not an effective way for me to learn new words. I got an email from Magoosh about their new app and I just want to inform the house. Incase you have tough time with the vocabularies, you can check out GRE Vocabulary Builder app in playstore. It is more interactive than the flashcard in such a way that you'd be given a word and options would be given to chose from. I just started using it and it is so effective, there are different levels for different difficult segments and there are about 1000words in total
Just thought I should share with others incase it would be helpful.
Regards
PS: it has segments for SAT and TOEFL
Its great but also check out gre cloud on playstore. The mnemonics have been of great help in helping to remember the meaning of words
ahmed1258: I took the GRE recently and got the 328 score (Q:165, V:163) At the start of my prep I gathered all the materials that I need. I never made myself get confused with all different kinds of materials that are available in the market. Following the right course that I can afford and maintaining the discipline that I feel is needed to achieve anything.
Coming to the preparation I'm somewhat good at math . So I decided to focus more on the verbal mostly on the vocabulary. I followed flashcards and some good vocab app which I got them on play store. Also Barron’s 1100 Words you need to know. They helped me lot to observe the difference from where I started and where I ended.
Reading comprehensions are the hardest part for me where I wasted a lot of time reading and understanding itself. I referred some free blogs by well reputed authors and I also recommend that as you'll find them useful.
Even though I was confident with math I solved more math questions from manhattan and there are some specific GRE forums like GRE prep club, Urch where you'll find the challenging questions. I decided to spend one and a half minute to solve MCQ's and a maximum of 3 minutes for numerical entry questions as they require an analytical approach.
I took up galvanize test prep for my prep as they a unique strategy making me ready for the exam with a course manager assisting me till my exam. This suits me.
Pick the right one by following the reviews. The practice tests are also good as well. Don't worry if you aren't ready to spend money for these. There are many free things out there. Never miss to take some sample/practice tests before the real one. This helps to manage the time during test and help you analyze your weak points and master in them.
Don't stress about and enjoy the ride.
This is great how many months did you prepare for? and what program are you targeting ?
BikeMan: Hi,please can you give pointers to how you easily locate this people on LinkedIn. Been trying to connect with current students too,I just don't know how to find them with LinkedIn
it's easy you can type the name of the school click on alumni (it's in the left side of the page) after clicking on the school.
LinkedIn uses an algorithm which helps show people from you country before other people. So scroll down you will see Nigerians that are attending or attended the school. Viola connect and chat with them. You can also go further by chatting with people from other countries.
Another thing you should note during your research on LinkedIn, when you click on the school and select alumni, look at the places where they work, especially international students. While everyone is different with different graces and favour, it will at least give you a feel of how the alumnis of the schools fair in the job market.
Also drill down because several factors can sway the job market, they could have taken additional courses/programs. So keep that in mind.
Bifrost: 2020. I intend writing it around August/September this year.
if you are writing around August/September then you should start preparing now. You would also need to maximise and prioritize your time especially if you work. If you don't, then great for you. Use your time wisely and in 3 months you will be ready to write it.
Also, you need to make up your mind if you will do well with a tutor or you will study on your own. Things to note: Have a target score in mind and identify your weaknesses early and start working on them.
practice from verbal grail and try to write/track your mistakes in a log book. Identify your weakness, is it TC, RC or SC once you have found out which section is giving you problems, now drill down to the cause e.g. Could it be you don't know enough words in context, or you fail to understand convoluted passages, or it could just be that your test taking strategies are poor (e.g. time management, tricks and skills to get the right answer even if you don't know the words)
You will need to really identify your area of weakness, inorder to correct it and move forward. Hence, you will keep rotating around that score range.
So I have always wondered how the GRE Scoring Algorithm works. I never knew that the GRE penalizes test takers once your second section is easy. Check out the explanation here.
@ubah1 sorry dont know why i cant quote you Anyways, need to know because some people literally have 0 cash for school and would have to depend on GA through school.
While others have some money and can make do with partial funding. There are different types of funding (scholarships, grants etc) Why i asked this is because this would be a key driver in her search for schools because some schools don't offer full funding while others do.
bracelum: True talk I honestly see no need for a Ph.D. (for tech) if the career goal is not to work in R & D or academia. Most tech companies I've seen recruit Master's and PhDs for similar roles Even Quant roles in Investment banks and hedge funds I've seen recruit Master's and Ph.Ds for similar roles.
Some tech firms like Microsoft have a special recruitment program for Ph.Ds and it is strictly for R & D roles.
BikeMan: well I don't know her plans sha. If she's planning to get into get employed in one of these tech companies, why go for a 5yrs programme? Abi what do you think CuteRedd
you are right it depends on her future goals tho...! She may also want to work in the Research and Innovation department in these tech companies like Google, apple and the likes... In which the Phd would be a plus and an edge. However, you can also get into that even with a masters. It depends on the prior projects she has worked on, cuz the market is literally created for tech skilled persons right now. (I checked 2018 data for jobs companies filed h1b/greencard visas for and close to 95% if not more are for tech related jobs)
Also it depends on her interest she may want to do academic research hence PhD. Well, whatever path she chooses, would advice she does her due diligence by researching people who have taken the same path to achieve her dreams.
Ubah1: That he didn't read the question well while picking an answer is understandable. I won't blame him on that, it can happen to anybody but saying he forgot his previous visa refusal, I find that hard to believe.
Ubah1: The truth is that he didn't know that Canada shares information with USA, that's why he made the costly mistake and thought that they won't know about his USA visa denial.
well would give him the benefit of the doubt since he never said that he intended to lie in his Canadian interview. He said he forgot, it would be unfair to assume otherwise since we can't prove it.
Flattino: Now you’re contradicting yourself. You said you thought the question was only referring to Canada . Then again you said you totally forgot that you have ever applied for a non-immigrant visa to US , meaning if you even understood the question very well in the first place you would have still answered “No” cos as you claimed in that second part that you totally forgot bla bla bla . Even though idk you , I can conclude now from your own posts that you’re cunning. That’s probably what the VO noticed too .
cmon, calm down and read his post again. Also, that assumption is reaching! You really can't draw that conclusion from what he posted here.
He said he replied No when asked the question. Now he is explaining the reason he replied no due to the fact that he thought the question was referring to canada only and he also forgot that he even applied to US for visa. These things happen.. Coupled with anxiety and inexperience I guess he stood no chance.
Barry002: Good morning all, pls I need schools that don't require GRE/GMAT for MBA
Chai! at least write it even if you get a low score you will find schools which would take you. Even if I don't support doing MBAs in the US below a particular rank. Especially if you intend to be a global citizen. But to him his own.
Also just imagine you going to the embassy and when asked if you took a standardised test for MBA and you say No. 1. The VO knows that program and standardised test goes together and would be wondering the type of school that doesn't require GRE/GMAT for MBA Eg Visa mill schools. Except Executive MBA or you have worked up to/ more than a particular number of years (10) in a managerial position then it can legitimately be waived for u. 2. Potential profile for one who just want to run when he/she gets into the US.
Just avoid things that will reduce your chances. My2c.
Ubah1: I don't quite understand you. Northeastern university is ranked 44th in national universities while university of arkansas is ranked 152nd. He made a better choice by choosing Northeastern university
exactly I was wondering what he/she was talking about
kidUrbane: Hello, I haven’t sent any document yet. I was in the process of completing my registration when I made the quoted enquiry. I implore our gurus in the house who have had experiences on this issue to please guide us through the WES process and please help us attend to the question above. Thank you.
fairheart: This is a list of very nice recommendations, but the 3rd point is not a valid one. 2 years work experience is not on the low side for an MBA program-except the applicant is looking for a sort of waiver for GRE/GMAT in case the B-schools offer that to students and 3-5 years work experience is required to be eligible for the waiver. Remember there is professional MBA/Executive MBA, and the normal traditional one. With 2 year work experience, a traditional MBA is cool. Remember 2 years is equivalent to full 24-month work experiences, and that is a rich background an MBA can be obtained on. I have a friend who got an MBA on a 1 year work experience and graduated first class from a university in Texas. So, this student don't need to wait till 2020. He/she can start immediately. There are even better B-schools still taking in application for MBA in addition to the ones you mentioned.
1. Take the GRE and study hard for it. At this point, I wouldn't want you to worry about schools - worry more about getting a high GRE score. I'm suggesting GRE because I'm assuming you are considering a role in Corporate Finance and not Investment Banking. If you're considering Investment Banking, then it will require more effort as you will need to ace the GMAT with a 90+ percentile score and also invest significantly in networking.
2. Your undergraduate in geology makes you a non-traditional applicant to an MBA. It may be a good thing if you leverage that in your essays. B-schools need diversity, and I don't think they have many geologists in their application pool.
3. Two years work experience is quite on the low side for an MBA. MBA is not a degree for entry-level roles. So, I'll suggest you work towards Fall 2020 and by then, you should have 3 years of work experience which isn't bad.
4. While selecting programs, I will advise you to be open to programs that will give you added skills such as marketing, healthcare management, and analytics. It makes you more versatile and more competitive on the job market. You can do this by selecting dual degrees or by choosing concentrations in those MBA programs.
5. I will recommend UND's Mendoza MBA/MSBA dual degree (STEM), Arizona State MBA, Rochester's Simon B-School (they have a STEM concentration) and Penn State's Smeal MBA. The STEM programs are better in terms of work opportunities because they allow you more chances for the H-1B.
6. If you check carefully, these schools are among the top 50 B-schools in the US and they give significant financial aid for these programs. Those that are not within the top 50 should be very close to top 50. Don't (I repeat, DON'T) apply to a >80th ranked MBA program even if you get full funding. Brand and network is the game in b-schools and your career chances are very very tough when you attend those programs.
Enasdan: good morning everyone, I have previously done course-by-course ICAP transcript evaluation with WES (USA), when I was applying for Master's admission in the USA, now I'm intending applying and seeking for a school in Canada university that might request transcript evaluation. my questions are:
1.. how can I transfer my evaluation report files from WES (USA) to WES (Canada), how possible?
2. does anyone knows if Canadian universities accept WES transcript evaluation report from WES (USA) if I can order for a duplicate report from WES (USA) to be sent to the intended school in Canada.
Thanks in advance for your, suggestions, contributions, and advice, I do appreciate.
it is possible to transfer send WES an email about your enquiries they would put you through. Although I have to say it takes quite a long time... My friend had to pay again for WES USA (he was transferring from Canada to USA) when the process was taking a long time, he had to start a new process.. But if you don't mind waiting then you don't need to pay again I guess
MasterforceII: Happy New Year to all Fall19 Hopefuls. May the admissions and funding roll in in due time. Good luck also to those writing the GRE this year. Success is your portion
Olalekank: Please do schools in the US accept HND? If it's only some schools that accept, does anyone have a link to these schools or kindly list some of these schools?
@olalekank can't quote you dont know what is wrong with NL anyway leave ASUU alone o and just focus on your goals. Wish you the best. What are your target schools?
