. . .Continued.

To the finer points and to be precise, while in the first case, Hitler and his Nazi party (racists, tribalists, bigots) for their ideologists directly related to the highest levels of racism, bigotry, and lebensraum invaded Poland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Russia, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, etc killing Jews, Gypsies and everyone not of their so called Aryan race. Did these people directly ask for a fight no? In fact, the allies were willing to forego his initial incursions into parts of Czechoslovakia, Austria, etc to avoid war but it wasn't possible eventually. So, is it the fault of that man that you put up in the picture?

On the other hand and comparing to the massacres of the Nigerian Biafra civil war, that war had a lot of history. Despite several attempts at reaching diplomatic solution to avoid all out war, it is on record that Biafran leaders led by Ojukwu did not agree. He declared secession which is ACT of WAR, so was that an innocent act? Gowon called initial attempts to restore order as "Police Action", not intending all out war, did you not know that? A leader looks at the BIG picture and decides on the consequence of his actions on the people he is leading before going to WAR. As an history graduate, Ojukwu knew about war history and despite that some of his co-leaders did not agree with him, he still went to war, so what do you expect? I'd like to keep this brief so I will stop here: Yes, there were massacres and on both sides (as per recorded history). Was there genocide, the UN and other OTN could not establish anything of such while they investigated and inspected the fighting during the WAR. Ezeuch, stop spreading lies. Your kids will grow up and hate you for spreading lies all over without any proofs. The only people who agree with you are co-tribalists like you. Get a life and stop playing the victim mentality for 41 years after the end of the war, you are still lying and propagandizing to perpetuate the pity party. Grow-up and get a real job!

EzeUche:
I see no difference between what the Igbo suffered

And what the Jews suffered during the Holocaust.
If you compare the two pictures, yes, they look alike and the cause of the human condition is the same!

However, EXEUCHE, you are a BIG liar! The very same reason you take two unrelated events and cast them in the same mold is why you are a shameless LIAR. Two people who were greater liars and evil propagandist that you seek to emulate demonstrated extensively the use of propaganda. Here are some in their own words and notice to absolute parallel with exactly with what YOU and a LOT of the worst tribalists and bigots like Dende1, Onlytruth, Relax, Nchara, Igbo boy, Ngodigha1, Ybutterfly, ak47mann, bashr4, ETC, ETC do on NLand:

1. “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it” . . . Adolf Hitler

2. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”. . .Joseph Goebbels

3. “The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over” . . .Joseph Goebbels

BTW, Ezeuche, you still have not credited the source of you first post. It is plagiarism and you should be ashamed of shamelessly plundering someone else's intellectual work without giving any credit to him/her.
egbon mi, it does not matter. what matters is we are a nation.

if it is built in lagos, I expect lagosians (which i am as well) to welcome our brothers from the east to come and get the benefit of a refinary (if built).

You see if all the refianries are controled by igbos, it is cool so long as they do the job right.

We need to show igbos are wanted in Lagos so as to strengthen the bond between yoruba and igbo and to make the economy of lagos a true Nigerian economy.

I hope you see what I mean. I know the reason you are saying this right now is the nonsense you are read of NL about yorubas from igbos even living in lagos. At the end of the day when we die, we would not take the refinary to heave neither would we take the fuel or money to heaven.

Egbon mo hope pe e understand smiley
Hey, yes I understand you perfectly. I just wanted to highlight that point and if you asked me, I have no issues with anywhere the refineries (any infrastructure for that matter) are located and having all our resources shared / harnessed / improved / used together for the general GOOD of everyone - down to the weakest person / smallest tribe. However, this this can only be possible in the atmosphere of mutual RESPECT, SHARING CREDIT, COLLABORATION, DIPLOMACY, GRACIOUSNESS, etc.
1. Lagos is a commercial hub for nigeria so it is not like the refinary is for yorubas. At the end of the day 70%-90% of lagos is igbo thus majority of the workers are igbos

2. kogi is at the center of the country and also close to abuja thus it serves every region

3. Bayelsa is a SS region and after so many years of neglect, i think it is about time it is built there to provide jobs for the locals

Lastly and very importantly

at the end of the day, we are one nation regardless of zones. WE are not even certain the government would build the refinary so what is all the wahala about really ? undecided
^ I hope you are joking with the 70% - 90% thing because when Nigeria breaks up, talks like this is what WILL ensure that everyone goes back to his region - traced by name, parent's name and lineage! When there are any doubts as to the person's real origin, he WILL not be allowed to stay and MUST leave! Don't you know that it is highly insensitive to arrogate the ownership of a place to renters at the expense of the owners? So, because the SS allows non-natives to live and derive a good life from oil revenue, they now become 90% of the population; when SW allows migrants from the East, North, SS to their region, they now become 70% - 90%?? Well, if Nigeria does break-up, talks like these will create another Nigeria and that is why it is better to make a clean, total break without any grey areas!

Let it be on record that I am EXTREMELY saddened to get this news. I was actually going to sleep when I read this and just had to comment. My sincere condolences for the departed and bereaved.

Nigerians. . .this is not a problem of any tribe, it is that of FAILURE of LEADERSHIP to protect the citizens. Your president said only that you should all be ready to endure this which is NOT fair. In a REAL country with leadership, this kind of thing cannot happen without repercussion and serious response of the State and security agencies. These people are bonafide citizens and pay their taxes to a government that has failed them. The task and conversation should be that of highlighting that Jonathon's government has failed woefully and should be removed immediately. Stop looking at tribalism. . .your answer lies with ineptitude, graft and failure of the State!

ACM10:
I appreciate your effort to argue by quoting books in support of your position. Inasmuch as I would like to be convinced by your staunch defence of your position, I would also like to go back in time and gain a little knowledge of the background of the author you steadfastly quote his work like gospel. Since you did not make an attempt to provide that much needed information. I opted to give you some help.

Who is John de St. Jorre?

It is well documented that European and American intelligence assets operate under the cover of a diplomat, freelance journalist, tourist, aid workers, businessmen, etc. Does John de St. Jorre qualify to be placed in any of these categories? We all know that Westerners don't declassify the names of their intelligence asset, even at death. For example, CIA only place star symbol at their memorial ground at CIA headquarters in Virginia, if any of their agents dies in action, but never publish their names.

With this background of John de St. Jorre and considering the role Britain played during the civil war, do you think that the account of Brits intelligence asset will be objective?

I honestly don't think so.
Your civil debate is appreciated. Unfortunately, I will be out and be back later to respond more. To your points, I am aware of the background of the author. His background however does not nor detract from his presentation of the account from both sides and many of his claims are well cross-referenced. I do not think I can provide enough e-pages to show places in which he disagreed other publishers (like Forsyth) citing works of more than one author to buttress his points. I suggest you read the book, it wouldn't hurt to get more knowledge.

One more important thing: you posted a very short part of his profile which you miss out several book publications, work and writing for several media outlets but you conjecture that he is an agent of the British intelligence? Well, except you or anyone can prove that, it is totally of no consequence to how for example, what precipitated the massacre at Asaba. Conspiracy theories are not new but if indeed you wish to place his work as some conspiracy, how come the main actors of the war including Ojukwu and many others DID NOT challenge his account and provide a different corroborated accounts? Look at this objectively. Yes, it is natural for discussions like this to me emotional and sentimental but at the end of the day, EVERYONE must learn from history because this is the only benefit we can derive going forward. Sentiments and emotions make objective learning totally impossible!

One thing you guys missed is his BODY language. For goodness sake, this is EXACTLY the kind of body language that leaders of countries most Nigerians are dying to get a visa to and escape from Nigeria have. In that short video, notice the following: serious facial expression, full eye contact, matching gestures and a fluent firm delivery! Unfortunately, most Nigerians cannot see a good candidate for national leadership even if he struck them on their heads.

I don't live in Lagos so this is not some partisan post as most people are quick to conclude. If this guy is as weak, useless and stupide like Jonadead and BH starts bombing Lagos, I am sure no one will remember the toll gate issue or increase in school fees.
Exactly What I told him.  He found a book that support his bias thus in his opinion, makes it accurate yet there are articles and other books which opposes his book thus in his opinion since it does not support his bias, that makes those articles and books a lie.  Relax101, posted videos of civilians discussing the war but CyberG labeled as yet another propaganda;  If civilians whom experienced the war are now liars in his opinion then it not something to be taking seriously.  Opinion is an opinion, he's entitled to his.

I SAW every part of the video and what books? Again, a book a la Frederick Forsyth and uncorroborated by other sources would be questionable as in reviews, the same book and author was reviewed as ". . .shamelessly pro-biafran. . ." with holes picked in some accounts in that book with counter-sources. I am not sure how engaged your are in scholarly works but this is the same ideas that guide every fact (not fiction) that you spent years learning in the class-room. The videos showed massacres and people giving THEIR own experience, and that is FACT - they saw it! Was it killings, massacres? Yes. Was it genocide, NO! If a polish general traveling and inspecting the conduct of war, in the company of others who all know what Hitlers genocide looked like and did not conclude genocide, would you believe him or a single story?

I agree with this, soon enough the survivors of the war would die from old age hopefully but their stories will always live on through this articles and interview.  I loved reading the articles and hearing other survivors stories apart from my father's whom experienced the Asaba genocide and lost his father is the progress.

Well, it is sad people were killed but it is not genocide! The US has lost 4,000+ in the Iraq/Afghan War and the other side has lost ~110,000. This so disproportionate and it must be genocide! The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and killed ~2,400, wounded ~1,280. In retaliation the Americans killed between over 240,000 with just two bombs. This must be genocide or what do you think when you look at the hugely disproportionate numbers of causalities!

^ Yes, I like this thread and it presents opportunity for everyone to learn and reach individual opinions rather than swallowing facts or fictions handed down by people who only saw what happened around them.

I don't doubt that you know about narcissism but I have a very profound knowledge of narcissism (and invite you to see my previous posts elsewhere). I am not here to defend any book but I ask you to present a different account of what caused the killings in Asaba. For your information, the book was published in August 1972, in extensive details, how could it be revisionist when the war ended in January 1970 and to sustain your charge of revisionism, you would need to point to other sources (cross-referenced) by other "neutral" sources in the war. For example, citing Frederick Forsyth's book would could easily be discounted as citing Obasanjo's if no other supporting reference materials were provided.

You mention the Geneva Convention and except you can proof that the UN was not represented in the OTN, then it is moot point that the UN actually saw the treatment of human beings and the conduct of the war and in all the violence did not establish genocide. Otherwise, if someone grabbed you by your coat while you are walking and accused you of some grave crime, then he MUST be right because he accused you and you are wearing a certain color of coat at that time. How does that sound? If you make an accusation, then you MUST prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.

Yes, we are all entitled to our opinion but do you know that a lot of people here on NL care only about their point of view and would resort to insults if you don't so much as agree? Yes, those are the tribalists and I am sure you know them!

Ezeuche. . .I like your thread because it will bring people to read about the REAL HISTORY and find out the TRUTH rather than your phantom claim of genocide. There were definite incident that could be classified as genocide BEFORE the civil war. However, the one you allude to here were massacres without a definite pattern of genocide as attested to by the Observer Team in Nigeria (OTN) drawn from Britain, Canada, Poland, United Nations and OAU. They actually witnessed the conduct of war and produce several volumes of report that NEVER concluded genocide! Damning reports of massacres were made for which BOTH sides - BIAFRAN and NIGERIA were guilty! For people who read only a few lines: I AM NOT IN ANY WAY SAYING THAT MURDER OR MASSACRE IS ACCEPTABLE but Nigeria was in a state of war caused by the actions and inactions of several actors in the theater of conflict and it is naive or disingenuous to think you can go to war and VERY bad things won't happen!

Before I proceed, I very much doubt that you wrote that piece you have quoted so generously! As an educated person, plagiarism is a VERY REAL crime of theft and shows you as someone without integrity or ethics to credit an appropriate source of information but rather claim them as your original works and thought. That piece was taken from: http://www.genocidewatch.org/genocide/8stagesofgenocide.html/. This is not trivial as you may and you can not even blame being educated in Nigeria or not educated at all as the reason. Referencing other information appropriately does not detract from the fact that attribution of credit to your leading source of information was not provided!

Here are some detailed publication take from exhaustive, cross referenced, corroborated literature: The Brothers' War by John De St. Jorre.

Politics › Re: MASSOB Leader Uwazuruike To Succeed Ojukwu As The New Igbo Leader by CyberG: 8:26am On Dec 29, 2011
igbo boy:
1. cyberG who are the PH locals? Is PH (and Present day rivers made up of one ethnic group?) FYI my mom is from Rivers, I am not from "present day east as it is referred to in Nigeria today" ok,

PH, of course, comprises of more than one ethnic group: Abua, Andoni, Ekpeye, Engenni, Etche, lbani , lkwerre, Kalabari, Ndoni, Ogba, Okrika, etc.

2. No i dont see the logic, Attache attache na im u dey define here, Look at the begining of the war "most" of the then old eastern people where either with Biafra or where neutral, after the fall of these peripheral communities they either remained neutral or joined the Nigerian side!!duh with the threat of extermination by the Nigerian force (like the massacre in Delta North communities) and promises of carving out for them a region for them outside of igbo influence why wouldnt they?

The logic is self explanatory: the people who you fought and lost were from other tribes in Nigeria, hence they are BATTLE-TESTED! Except you wish to contend that until all the soldiers of one tribe belong to a particular division only, fought and won then they become battle tested and otherwise, they are not. This of course would be an unprecedented attempt to push a bizarre point of view. Some of the more effective divisions and renowned commanders were from particular tribes and yet they were not battle-tested? One more thing which you should consider: It is highly commendable to blend almost totally fresh recruits, with diverse backgrounds and tribes into an effective fighting force and win than take an homogenous army. Think about that.

I should also fail not to comment that, you being a young man now, have nothing on people far older than you that made a decision to be on one side against another on a promise of owning their land, their state and some measure of control. At the beginning, was the approval of the people sought before being co-opted into the war because if it was, then you could say they flip-flopped but their decision was NEVER sought to war! "Duh" is not a compliment to those people and they are well within their rights to make any decision and live with the consequences. In the final analysis, the events and records of what happened during and after the war does not show that they were neutral or fought for biafra. Most people including the Mid West was neutral until the war was under-way and it became clear what the future held with biafran incursion across the Niger. Otherwise, if they were so cozy with the biafrans, and were merely influenced by the offer of their own states as alluded to previously, why were they attacked when the biafrans were forced to leave? Why did they not quickly and gladly return back all properties on their land back to the Igbos after the war?

Now the war was then carried out mostly by igbos, We all know who did most of the fighting on the Nigerian side (and is not these your so called PH locals).

I never said or mentioned that PH locals did most of the fighting. Please read again and if I made any such statement, I will edit it right away.

MEND is mostly Ijaw (yes i said mostly ijaw you would hardly see an urhobo, isoko, akwa ibom, igbo, itsekiri, efik bini man etc in MEND), BH is mostly hausa/fulani  so my point remain that these are the only battle tested group in Nigeria,

You are still wrong to say that some group is the only battle tested in Nigeria! There are groups that have fought battles for 100s of years before the biafran war with the most modern weapons of their time, does it mean they are still not battle tested? In modern times, several Nigerian soldiers of different tribes fought in Burma, Congo, the Civil War and then Liberia. Does that mean they are still not battle-tested until they fight on ethnic and tribal grounds in support of a shared belief? Abeg, don't demean any of this people for if you saw any of these people in the heat of battle, then you will know if you are even riot-tested! Have you stared down the barrel of the gun pointed at your face before? Be respectful!

You know I am igbo so what the hell are you? are you trying to hide under a cloak? Reveal your ethnicity let me shame the devil, #NwaOshimilideyhereso

I politely decline any invitation to discussion about tribes. I can already read all your insults and desire to engage in a tribal fist-cuff. I advise this is not necessary and your best bet to shaming the devil is to get off hatred for other humans on the basis of their tribe and race.

Ugwu: I read your posts before posting and I should let you know that I am not in a tussle with you or anyone. I am just making clear points backed with facts and the least you should do is to stifle debate or free speech. Check my post history here and you will see for yourself. There is no value in asking me to not express myself for you live in a free society like I do and Nigeria in fact strives to be a free society. Don't worry about my intellectual prowess, they are top-notch, well tested, accomplished and are of no consequence to this debate. Now back to my points:

======================================================================================

Now to show you that there is NO denial in those passages, read it. Massacres were committed by both sides but no patterns of genocide were established. The pogroms of pre-civil war fitted more in the definition of genocide and it means today (2011), that genocide still remains. However, the genocide that is claimed by propagandist is not that in the per-war days in the north but that which occurred in the north when the declaration of secession invited escalation of hostilities. What happens when people fight wars? A lot and death is everywhere! Number of deaths in the recent US-Iragi/Afghan Wars put the casualty numbers at 4,683 for US and 104,384 - 114,042 to the other side. This is very disproportionate and remember that several thousands more of women and children are dead on the side. Can we make a case for genocide?

However, one thing that makes established cases of genocides different from here is this was a war that was invited by actions of Igbos. Let us call a spade a spade! We can analyze from before independence but even discounting that, what in God's name do people want when after killing all other leaders and they are crying and sad, you start making fun of them?? You live in their midst, your fathers rented land/space in the lands of their ancestors and after killing their own leaders, you break out the tambourine and sing them songs of derision? Ironsi had an eternity to do the right thing or appear to be making the right moves but NO, he would promulgate the useless Decree 34 which his key man (and tribesman) Francis Nwokedi would find every reason to bring to reality! There were riots, the northerners shouted "A raba", everyone slagged them off and yet you still sing them boastful songs for their sadness? Was Ironsi just to keep the coupists of January 1966 in safety and paying them salaries without even any punishment? Where is your sense of justice or you only think of justice when you are on the receiving end? Any set of doing right would have saved everyone a headache of a war today and it is most important that people learn NOW rather than repeat the errors of the past!

I have no idea how long you've lived in Netherlands but do you know that one of the arch racists of all time invaded that same country in World War II? No matter how good you find live today, you will always have to thank people who rose up to counter Nazi Germany for otherwise today, you will either live in an enslaved society or live in a different country or sent to the grave because of your race. This is the truth and it is very bad to ask me to keep quiet. I welcome your counter-arguments.

Here is a somewhat more detailed general education for you about the origins of genocide and the propaganda that is mouthed by a lot of people. There is a saying that when you REPEAT A LIE OVER AND OVER AGAIN, IT BEGINS TO SEEM AS TRUTH. This lie has been debunked for so long and you can imagine that in a 100 years, there would still be more people who will find out the truth themselves. Now read, patiently and I have highlighted most of the posting for less patient readers:
