thegoodjoehunt3:I have said it before and I will say it again; our problem goes beyond the coaches. Nigerian football has been on aa downward slide for more than a decade, the only bright spot being the Afcon win in 2013. The same way Nigerians are shouting "sack Keshi" is how they shouted "sack Amodu, sack Eguaveon, sack Berti Vogts, sack Christian Chukwu, sack Siasia" Yet not much has changed. It is time we turned the spotlight on the real culprits, the players. These are supposed to be professional fooballers. It's no surprise we have no players performing at the top level in Europe. When was the last time a Nigerian player was the Best in Africa? Our players revel in mediocrity and Nigerians tend to celebrate their mediocrity. We make them feel like demi-gods simply because Brila FM and Complete Sports make noise about them. You can hardly ever point to any progression in their career. Even when they start of in a good league, they usually end up in the back leagues of Europe. They lack drive, they lack ambition; they only care about money and we cheer them on with comments like "stop beefing, they are making their money". Well, yeah they are making their money and bringing you all heart-ache. Until Nigerian player value being amongst the best in the world more than earning Euros, Pounds and Dollars, we will continue to moan and groan. My two and a half cent. |

Limaoscar:It's nott just the coaches. The players need to apply themselves to these things. Is there any Nigerian player who is the designated set-piece taker for their clubside? I don't know of any since Okocha quit Bolton. It is a known fact that Beckham and Ronaldo spend hours after regular training improving their free kicks and corners. Ronaldo even trained himself to jump high and head in crosses. What do our own players do after training? Go to the pub for a pint? |
OkikiOluwa1:Okiki stop wasting your time with that dude. He'll probably tell you 2006 World Cup was boring because Nigeria wasn't there. |
aljazira:Just last month against Congo. Efe Ambrose nodded in. |
@OP, so you want to tell me that in that 6yrs you did not date any lady or shine any congos? You were just being a good boy, waiting for the day she will love you back? I hear you. I wonder if the roles where reversed, would you and the many guys who have commented have a problem with it. How many guys have ignored girls who were in love with them to go chase other girls, only to come back after many years to marry the good girl they once treated unfairly. Countless, I'm sure. Chai, it truly is a man's world. It's okay for a guy to go about sowing the useful seeds of his youth, only to come back at 30-something with watery sperm that can't even impregnate a woman in hyper-ovulation, to want to marry the cute innocent chic that has been crushing on him for ages. The guy won't be seen as "used and dumped" then o. Oh, OP you are counting on marrying a virgin abi? A girl who has never even dated another guy before ba? I wish you good luck. Truth is you don't really love her as much as you claim. So, just go ahead and do what we all know you want to do. Chop and clean mouth. |
Er, where exactly is the excuse? Is stating the facts now an excuse? So, if I say there's going to be heavy downpour in Lagos tomorrow which will result in heavy traffic gridlock, does that mean I'm giving excuses not to go to work or I'm just stating a fact? SMH! What a thread. |
darkjorse:Seriously? Keshi unilaterally informed the guys at Friesland that he must be the one to do the adverts? Or are you the Brand Manager for Peak Milk per chance? And then you say Keshi is always in the media? Do you know that coaches have a obligation to hold press briefings from time to time? Especially when games are coming up? So, when the press corps gather, what should Keshi tell them. I can't speak with you about the national team so I won't offend Nigerians? Why don't you query the journalists that keep asking him questions we all know the answers to? Even a 5 year old knows Keshi and Uche are not exactly on good terms, yet they keep asking why he hasn't been called up. Isn't it friggin' obvious? |
Goke7:Bro, na today? Even the IK Uche they are all fighting and clamouring for to be in the team today will still be booed and ridiculed out eventually. If Rashidi Yekini who is Nigeria's all-time highest goal scorer was ridiculed out of the Super Eagles, with some fans even asking why an "has been" was taken to France 98, by Bora Milutinovic, then I can bet that even Uche will be summarily ridiculed and called a "spent force" by these same Nigerians. Did Kanu and even Okocha not suffer the same fate? Has Yakubu Aiyegbeni not scored more goals in an Eagles shirt than IK Uche? How did that story end? IK Uche, enjoy it while it lasts o! Just one or two bad games and you'll think you are the one responsible for all of Nigeria's footballing woes. Naija fans, I hail thee. *sits back and sips on kunu* |
A good thread for all those "stop beefing him, he is making his millions" crew. You can hardly criticize any footballers (or even celebrity) these days without being called a hater beefing someone making his millions. Well, guess what, those millions can be filtered away in a jiffy. No one is above criticism. I hope our music stars of today are listening and learning. Invest wisely and prayerfully. |
Prediction 3-1. |
aumeehn:Who art thou oh Zerubabbel. Why art thou bookest the firstus to commentus spot here with this your "." You are waiting for front page ba? Okay, make me sef grab my seat against Saturday. Make I use this flag keep seat. Make nobody remove this flag from here o!

The Nigeria coach has accused the Villareal man of turning down the opportunity to play for his country and would never be invited again Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has told journalists to stop asking the reason for the absence of striker Ikechukwu Uche from his team as he disclosed that the Villareal man turned down an opportunity to return last month. Keshi said that he would never beg Uche to play for the Super Eagles in a very comprehensive explanation regarding the shut out of the player at a media parley on Wednesday. Uche had been ignored since the end of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations which Nigeria won. With his top form in Spain, he had been expected to make the squad to the World Cup but was again overlooked while Keshi took along strikers in poorer form. The issue of Uche's recall came up last month when Keshi announced his team to take on Congo and South Africa without the Yellow Submarine man, who took to Twitter to deny asking to be begged to play for his country. Today, Keshi opened up on the issue extensively. “I don’t want to talk about the issue of Ikechukwu Uche again and I don’t want anybody to ask me about him again,” Keshi said while responding to a journalist’s question. “Before [last month’s] game against Congo, I did the list. I didn’t even want to do the list because I never knew I would come back to handle the team. I told them I am not the coach that [the NFF] should do the list but they said no, I should please do the list. “I did the list and Ikechukwu Uche’s name was on the 25 man list I did. He (Ike Uche) didn’t even know about it because I did not tell him. Uche then called me four days later and said “Coach how are you? and I said boy it is good to hear your voice.” We just spoke like brothers and that was it. “I then told [Team] Secretary, Dayo Enebi, to ask if the players have South African visas and the ones that don’t have he should take their passports ahead of time to process their visas. “He then asked Ikechukwu Uche and Uche said why is he asking him and why was he asking for his international passport. “I hate to speak without Uche not being here or if you want to call him put him on speaker to know who is telling lies or not. And please nobody should ask me about Uche again. “Uche said he needs somebody to talk to him about something they said about him as being a bad kid and they said he did something wrong. “Then I said okay [Dayo Enebi] take his name out. I am not going to beg Uche and I am not going to tell Daniel [Amokachi] to beg Uche, for what? “We have played for this country for over 20 years and nobody ever begged us to play for the country. We are the ones always begging to play. "So please let this be the end today. Don’t ask me about Uche. We have Obafemi Martins and others (doing well) and nobody is making fuss about not being invited. “What is wrong with him? Why do people want to tear this team apart,” Keshi queried. The Super Eagles are without the injured pair of Victor Moses and Michael Babatunde as they head to Khartoum. Nigeria face a must-win pair of matches against Sudan if they hope to qualify to defend their African title in Morocco next year. miembamish:And you know this because you are...., GOD? |
MarvellousGod:Cheers too you too. |
Yet another thread for people battling with inferiority complex. Yes, superiority complex is actually a form of inferiority complex. What exactly are we supposed to be respecting here? Your certificate or your accomplishments? The fatter paycheck or the one who has used his profession to make positive change? I would gladly respect a rural farmer who has made a discovery that has improved the way we do farming and even inspired scientist to expound and improve on his ordinary discovery. I'd rather respect the doctor living like a hermit, going from one rural area to the other helping the poor to battle malaria and other diseases than the one working in some high-paying hospital treating the same malaria. Same goes for the Engineer. No profession is entirely superior to the other. I depends on the impact you make and the lives you touch. So get of your high horses and go make a difference. Jeez! |
MarvellousGod:Personally, the only part of your comment I don't totally agree with is saying "nobody has the final say". Somebody must make the game call and be responsible for it ultimately. I'll give an example. Recently my wife and I had a three day long argument about letting our child resume school after the whole Ebola scare. Left to her the kid won't resume till January when we can be 100% sure all is well. I was of the opinion that it was now safe to go back to school and that the Ebola situation had been largely contained successfully. I told her I understood her concerns but I believe her position was based largely on fear and some misconceptions. I didn't see why the kid should lose a whole term on that basis. At the end of the day I had to make the call. She concurred grudgingly, and the child is back in school. Like I said in my previous post, it doesn't mean I don goof sometimes, but my wife knows I made the final call with good intentions after considering all our different opinions. And I admit it when I goof. There have also been issues where I said "you know what, we'll do It your way". If things go wrong I don't blame her. I still take responsibility for making the call to do it her way. That's what is expected of a team leader, be it a CEO, football coach or hubby\parent. Someone must make the game call, otherwise issues will remain pending forever. |
Serendipity:I don't think people use that saying when referring to skills like baking a cake, sewing, knowing how to fix a car engine or how to do a heart byepass surgery. More often than not, it refers to what some folks term general knowledge. Information you garner from reading the newspapers, a magazine, a novel or even a thread on an online forum like Nairaland. It is knowledge which doesn't necessarily apply to your profession but which will help you to understand the basics of a particular topic. I may not know how to bake a cake, but I know what icing is, I know what currants are, I can identify a cake tha has butter icing from one that doesn't. I may not know how to fix a car engine, but I can identify it in a car. I know what a radiator does and can point out some other parts under the car bonnet. I may not know how to perform a heart byepass surgery, but I know the basics of how the heart works and its compartments. I may not speak fluent French, but their words and sentences I can understand. I may not even know the nitty gritty of your profession which I believe you identified as law, but I know who a plaintiff is, who a bailiff is, I know what the burden of proof refers to, what an acquittal is, an adjournment, what certain civic and criminal laws state simply by reading John Grisham and watching law related series on TV. Besides, who knows tomorrow? I might be in court tomorrow and you my lawyer may be doing a shoddy job at representing me. I'd like to know enough of the law to tell you you're screwing up. :-) That I think is the knowledge people refer to when they use that axiomatic expression. |
AreaFada2:This usually isn't because people are working too hard just to provide for the family, but because today's workplace demands too much of employees. It worse in a country like Nigeria where Labour Laws are not enforced. Even the working woman is not spared. Many working wives are made to work long hour and even weekends, usually leaving them with little time for family and health issues too. |
I say whatever works for you and your spouse. There is no one size fits all approach. You and your partner need to discover what works for you, preferably during courtship\dating. None of the models are wrong if both partners already have a mutual understanding that its the model that works for them. In my own home, I take responsibility for the family upkeep, especially for major expenses like rent, school fees, utility bills, feeding and maintenance for things like the car, gen and other amenities. I don't demand that my wife contribute from her salary, but the beautiful thing is that she contributes anyway. She goes out and buys stuff she feels we need. She buys clothes for our kid, buys groceries extra groceries that I might miss and even buys stuff for me (recently got me two wristwatches). Whenever I'm short on cash for any particular expense, she usual chips in and I'm not too proud to ask. I usual try to pay her back; sometimes she refuses, saying we are in this together. I'm too glad to have her save the bulk of her income for the rainy day. Let that be our back up. Wise woman that she is; she invests it for better returns. I also have a percentage I save too though. It works fine for us. When it comes to decision-making, we discuss together. We weigh the pros and cons, air our opinions and talk things through. Where there are strong differences in opinion, and there will be because we have different upbringings, we try to reach a compromise. Sometimes we don't. But somebody has to bite the bullet, the buck must stop on someone's table, someone must make the game call, and that is me as team leader. Like someone said earlier we make decisions together, then I have to take ultimate responsibility. When there are contentious issues, my wife usually defers to me. I have goofed a few times, but even then she know I took that step because I believe it was the best at the time, and I'm not to proud to admit in retrospect that I was wrong. And even when I decide to do anything the way she suggested and it goes wrong, I don't blame her but still take responsibility for taking the final decision. Like I said, it works for us. I do not resent her, but love and adore her. She's my number one cheerleader. My queen who makes me feel like a King. It may not work for others. Find what works for you. |
Sagamite:Now those were the bits I found ineresting. I don't care much for Ini Edo and her so-called husband. However, it seems his family members and friend are very jobless. Or is it that he pays them top dollar to tail Ini Edo all around he Federation? They must be feeling like Super star P.I's. |
chimerase2:The mumuna you are looking for is not available at the moment, please try the hospital nearby. So, I heard Van Gaal has been given a mandate to finish in the top 3..., and that is because Arsenal is already sure of 4th place. |
Havilah93:Mourinho don close shop be that. Mukina Bance, how market? |
Just got in to discover we beat Everton. Thank goodness. Hopefully the teams confidence will return gradually and we can become formidable again. Big up to all United fans. |
Emmysteve:Hehehehe. Na the Naija way be that. Hail him today, nail him tomorrow. Even Yekini was ridiculed out of the Eagles at France 98. Personally, I argued that Siasia be left to continue in 2011, like I'm doing for Keshi now. We Nigerians are too impatient. The one time we grudgingly gave a coach five years, we all saw the outcome. We had a formidable team that we still celebrate 20yrs after. And trust me, Westerhof's teams didn't always look that good. Senegal 92 is a good example, for anyone who saw it. He was almost fired afterwards. They have both done well for Nigeria. |
vislabraye:Yeah right. Amuneke only played in the final of the Nations Cup, yet he started every game at the World Cup. Chidi Nwanu wasn't even at the Nations Cup. |
Emeca:Semantics my friend, semantics. Has Keshi's team changed that much in the last two years? Can yo not predict at least 8 of his starting 11? The back four hardly changes barring injuries; Ambrose, Oboabona, Omeruo, Echejiele. His midfield trio always has Mikel and Onazi, the only trouble spot being who completes the 3. That has rotated between Igiebor, Mba, and recently Ramon Azeez. Front 3 same scenario, Musa, Emenike are almost constant, while the third man has rotated between Oduamadi, Ideye and recently Osaze with his World Cup recall and Babatunde. So Keshi too has basically been tweaking. I would say his bench even experiences more of the tweaking largely because we don't have solid replacements for most positions. And that problem dates beyond Keshi. We are yet to replace Okocha, Finidi, Yekini, Oliseh and the likes. The guys we have now can't tie those dudes shoelaces. |
hydrocarbon:So, just because Keshi invited 4 new players in a team list of 25, that is why the sky wants to fall? That is the reason for all this hyper-ventilating? 4 players out of 25. When only 18 or 22 will be dressed for the game and only 14 can get to play? You guys are funny. Those four may not even see action in both games. The coach probably wants to see what they have to offer in training, so he can assess them in person. And that is why you are all loosing your heads? You have about 21 known faces and it is 4 potential debutants that you are all crying about. I remember back in 1993, Oliseh's first game was a Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia. He was a revelation in that game and went on to become an integral part of the Eagles for 11 years. If I'm not mistaking, Okocha's first Eagles game was a World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast. What happens if one of them turns out to be a revelation? |
Goke7: How i wish Ikpeba can be given the job to coach the eagles, let me if he can even draw one match, very funny fellow, the likes of ikpeba, Garba lawal and other ex players are the ones making the whole world feel that keshi is bad coach. I will only listen to an ex player that has coached a team to a resounding success instead of the ones that sit in tv studios making a mockery of English language. And Ikpeba calls himself an ex-footballer? He should be ashamed of himself. Do you ever stop building a football team? Should Keshi just stick to the team that won Afcon in 2013 even if some players loose form or are no longer at their best? Has Barcelona or Bayern Munich stopped building their team simply because they've won their leagues and the Champions League? Why do they bring in new players every season? How many years did it take Joachim Low to build the German team that won the World Cup? There were at least 10 new players in that squad from the one that played at South Africa 2010. Ikpeba, are you sure you're qualified to analyses football with this kind of reasoning. A football team is always going through building. It never ends. |
