Explainer: what is Daca and who are the Dreamers?

What is Daca?
Daca (pronounced dah-kuh) is a federal government program created in 2012 under Barack Obama. It allowed people brought to the US unlawfully as children the temporary right legally to live, study and work in America, instead of living in the legal shadows, fearing deportation. Those applying were vetted, and then action to deport them would be deferred for two years, with a chance to renew on a rolling basis. And they would become eligible for basics like a driving license, college enrollment or a work permit. The program is not designed as a path to permanent residency or citizenship.

Who are the Dreamers?
Those protected under Daca are known as “Dreamers” – by the time Trump announced his decision to rescind the program, many hundreds of thousands had been granted approval. To apply, they must have been younger than 31 on 15 June 2012, when the program began, have arrived before the age of 16 and been “undocumented”, ie lacking legal immigration status. Most Dreamers are from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

What happens now?
The case before the supreme court hinged on whether the Trump administration followed proper procedure – not whether it could legally end Daca. The court agreed Trump has the power to end the program.

That leaves open the possibility that Trump could have another go at scrapping it, though it would be difficult to do before the November election – and largely unpopular with voters. So Daca survives, albeit still in limbo for now. Will it start back up again, allowing new applications?

If the program had been killed off, Dreamers faced the immediate threat of deportation to the countries where they were born but many have no familiarity with.

Joe Biden has pledged to make Daca permanent via legislation if he becomes president.

A survey of Black immigrant domestic workers in New York, Miami-Dade and Massachusetts found that 70% had lost their jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A survey conducted by The Institute for Policy Studies and the National Domestic Workers Alliance includes responses from 800 workers.

Half of those surveyed said they were afraid of seeking assistance from the federal or local government due to their immigration status. Just as the pandemic hit the US, the Trump administration’s public charge rule, which allows the government to deny green cards and visas to immigrants who rely on public benefits, took effect.

A senior state department official has resigned over Donald Trump’s handling of racial tensions.

Mary Elizabeth Taylor, the assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs, submitted a resignation letter in which she said the president’s actions “cut sharply against my core values and convictions”, Washington Post reports.

Taylor, 30, is one of the highest-ranking African American leaders in the administration and had served since Trump first took office.

“Moments of upheaval can change you, shift the trajectory of your life, and mold your character. The President’s comments and actions surrounding racial injustice and Black Americans cut sharply against my core values and convictions,” she wrote in her resignation letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, which was obtained by the Post. “I must follow the dictates of my conscience and resign.”

What's Biden's immigration plan?

Following the supreme court’s decision on Daca, Joe Biden promised to create a roadmap to citizenship for Dreamers and 11 million undocumented people in the US “on day one” that he takes office.

The Democratic presidential candidate’s immigration platform seeks to distance Biden from policies enacted during Barack Obama’s first term, when deportations were sped up. But Biden’s plan is otherwise fairly moderate – offering a continuation of Obama-era policies that stop short of making the sorts of radical reform that immigration activists have demanded.

Biden doesn’t seek to decriminalize unauthorized entry into the US, or abolish Ice. Instead, the former vice-president also plans to refocus immigration authorities on ‘toward threats to public safety and national security” and otherwise relaxing enforcement.

His platform promises to reverse various Trump policies, including family separation and travel bans.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities have arrested three people accused of targeting patrol cars at the homes of several police officers this week.


On Tuesday, two patrol cars belonging to Gwinnett County police officers were targeted with Molotov cocktails. It happened between 10 p.m. and midnight at the officers' homes in Duluth and Lawrenceville.

In Duluth, someone set fire to the officer's patrol car, which was parked outside the officer's home. Witnesses told police they saw three black suspects running from the vehicle.

In Lawrenceville, a fire was started on the ground behind the patrol car. There were also two dents on the driver's side of the vehicle.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored passenger car fleeing the area after the Lawrenceville fire was started.

Police have since identified and arrested three suspects in connection with the case.

Alvin Joseph, 21, Lakaila Mack, 20, and Ebuka Chike-Morah, 21, are all facing a number of charges. Some of those charges include arson, criminal trespass, interference with government property, and several others.



The suspects are being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail.

In an unrelated case, a third officer found his patrol car windshield, and the driver's side window smashed early Wednesday morning outside his home in unincorporated Lawrenceville. Investigators said it appeared someone had thrown a brick at the vehicle.

COVID-19: PDP Gives FG 48-Hour To Declare Chinese Doctors’ Whereabouts.

The @OfficialPDPNig has given the @OfficialAPCNg-led Federal Government a 48-hour ultimatum to declare the whereabouts of the Chinese medical team it brought in purportedly to assist in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in our country.

@OfficialPDPNig’s position is predicated on the alarming declaration by the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, that he cannot account for the whereabouts of the Chinese team, who were brought into our country from the epicenter of the pandemic despite repeated warnings and disapprovals by our medical experts and professional bodies.

More so, the minister’s statement had heightened apprehensions in the public space that the Chinese team, whose identity and activities have been shrouded in secrecy, might have been brought in by a certain cabal for another purpose outside the general public good.

The party described as suspicious, creepy and weird that the minister of health, who had repeatedly assured that the Chinese were brought to render medical services and trainings; and even went personally to receive them at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja on April 8, 2020; in an elaborately publicized event, can no longer account for the team.

The @OfficialPDPNig recalls how officials of the @OfficialAPCNg-led administration had vehemently defended the invitation of the Chinese team and offered them full state protocol upon arrival, only to now turn around to disclaim the supposed experts deny involvement with them and even forbid Nigerians from enquiring about their whereabouts.

Our party is worried that the @OfficialAPCNg-led Federal Government is being economical with the truth, with its officials playing politics with the lives of our citizens and health safety of our nation.

The @OfficialPDPNig holds that government’s inability to account for the Chinese team amounts to direct betrayal of public trust, which has heightened fears of conspiracies by certain unpatriotic interests in the @OfficialAPCNg and its administration to compromise the health architecture of our nation and expose our citizens to danger.

Nigerians can recall how the Federal Government had failed to respond to demands by our party and other well-meaning Nigerians for the particulars of the members of the team, their medical status, scope of operation, detailed itinerary within our country as well as the safety of the equipment they brought into our nation.

Our party had expressed worry over scary reports of escalation of the scourge in certain countries reportedly after the arrival of Chinese medical personnel in those countries and insisted that the @OfficialAPCNg administration should be held responsible should there be any sudden upsurge in COVID-19 infection and deaths in our country, with the arrival of the said Chinese medical team.

We invite Nigerians to note that whereas our nation’s COVID-19 data, upon the arrival of the Chinese team in April, stood at 254 confirmed cases with 44 successfully treated by our doctors and 6 deaths, which reportedly had other underlining ailments.

Today, the data stands at no less than 5,450 cases and 171 deaths.

Our party therefore insists that the PTF on COVID-19 should immediately come out with the truth and provide explanations on the whereabouts of the team in the next 48 hours so as to douse the tension in the country.

She visited me today and slept off, I decided to read her chat with this man. Guess what? They actually kissed because he said he can't focus after the day he kissed her. Scrolling down I got the biggest shock of my life. She asked... What if she was pregnant.
What do I need? I must confess I have anger issues and wants answers almost immediately (I don't get violent but I might yell and refuse talking for long if not clarified) she's sleeping now peacefully and I am at the verge of exploding.
