Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo (died 13 February 1976) was a Military Governor of Kwara State from July 1975 to February 1976 during the military regime of General Murtala Mohammed. He assisted in establishment of the University of Ilorin, which was founded by decree August, 1975.
Taiwo was born in Wushishi, Niger State to the family of Adeosun and Emily Taiwo. He was brought up in Kagara and was sometimes called Ibrahim Kagara while he was in school. Taiwo's father was of Ogbomosho ancestry. Ibrahim Taiwo was educated at Senior Primary School, Minna, Bida Middle School, and briefly attended the Provincial Secondary School, Okene for his Higher School Certificate.
Military career
Taiwo joined the military in 1961, he started military training at the Nigerian Military Training College, Kaduna and also attended Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot. While in the army, he served as a mechanical transport officer, Officer Commanding 2 Brigade Transport in Apapa, Staff Captain, Army Headquarters, Lagos, Officer in charge of 8 Brigade, Asaba and then Officer in charge of the Transport Company, Kaduna. During the Civil War, he was head of the transport and supplies division of the Nigerian Army.
Participation in the Nigerian Counter-Coup of July 1966
Taiwo, then a Captain with the Lagos Garrison in Yaba, was one of the many officers (including 2nd Lieutenant Sani Abacha, Lieutenant Muhammadu Buhari, Lieutenant Ibrahim Bako, Lt Colonel Murtala Muhammed, and Major Theophilus Danjuma among others), who staged what became known as the Nigerian Counter-Coup of 1966 because of grievances they felt towards the administration of General Aguiyi Ironsi's government which quelled the 15 January 1966 coup.
During the Nigerian Civil War, Taiwo was one of the key figures in the Asaba massacre. He was the principal actor who ordered thousands of defenceless indigenes be gunned down in an execution style. This is Nigeria's greatest recorded genocidal act during its civil war.
Participation in the Nigerian Military Coup of 1975 Taiwo played a central role in the coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon and brought Murtala Mohammed to power, under cover of his Supply and Transport duties in the army, working closely with Lt. Col. Muhammadu Buhari.
Casualty of the 1976 Military Coup
Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo was murdered on 13 February 1976 during a failed coup in which the then Head of State Gen. Murtala Mohammed was also killed. General Olusegun Obasanjo was later appointed as Head of State keeping the rest of Gen. Murtala Mohammed's Chain of command in place.
The Asaba Massacre occurred in early October 1967, during the Biafran War, fought over the secession of Biafra (the predominantly-Igbo, former Eastern Region of Nigeria). Asaba (Igbo: Àhàbà) has an interesting ancestral lineage(its origin is linked to Ugboma, Ezeanyanwu, and Nnebisi) though linguistically Igbo, it was never part of Biafra. The people of Asaba typically identify as Anioma.
In August 1967, three months into the Biafran War, Biafran troops invaded the Midwest Region, to the west of the River Niger. They spread west, taking Benin City and reaching as far as Ore, where they were pushed back by the Nigerian Second Division, under the command of Col. Murtala Muhammed.
The Federal troops gained the upper hand, and forced the Biafrans back to the Niger, where they crossed the bridge back into the Biafran city of Onitsha, which lies directly across from Asaba. The Biafrans blew up the eastern spans of the bridge, so that the Federal troops were unable to pursue them.
Massacre
The Federal troops entered Asaba around 5 October, and began ransacking houses and killing civilians, claiming they were Biafran sympathisers. Reports suggest that several hundred may have been killed individually and in groups at various locations in the town. Leaders summoned the townspeople to assemble on the morning of 7 October, hoping to end the violence through a show of support for "One Nigeria." Hundreds of men, women, and children, many wearing the ceremonial akwa ocha (white) attire paraded along the main street, singing, dancing, and chanting "One Nigeria." At a junction, men and teenage boys were separated from women and young children, and gathered in an open square at Ogbe-Osowa village. Federal troops revealed machine guns, and orders were given, reportedly by Second-in-Command, Maj. Ibrahim Taiwo, to open fire. It is estimated that more than 700 men and boys were killed, some as young as 12 years old, in addition to many more killed in the preceding days.
The bodies of some victims were retrieved by family members and buried at home. But most were buried in mass graves, without appropriate ceremony. Many extended families lost dozens of men and boys. Federal troops occupied Asaba for many months, during which time most of the town was destroyed, many women and girls were raped or forcibly "married," and large numbers of citizens fled, often not returning until the war ended in 1970. The total death toll during early October was in excess of 1,000, although the exact numbers will likely never be known.
Suspect I.B.M. Haruna has sometimes been named as the officer who ordered the massacre, following a report of his testimony to the Nigerian Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission, known as the Oputa Panel.[1] This article quoted him as claiming responsibility (as the commanding officer) and having no apology for the atrocity. However, Haruna was not present in Asaba in 1967. He replaced Murtala Muhammed as C.O. of the Second Division in spring 1968.
In October 2017, the Asaba community marked the 50th anniversary of the massacres with a two-day commemoration, during which the new, comprehensive book on the massacre, its causes, consequences, and legacy, was launched: "The Asaba Massacre: Trauma, Memory, and the Nigerian Civil War," by S. Elizabeth Bird and Fraser Ottanelli (Cambridge University Press). This book, which draws on interviews with survivors and military and government figures, as well as archival sources, discusses how and why the massacres happened, and the impact of this community trauma, decades after the event.

The PDP cautions the @MBuhari Presidency not to further weaken our nation and using nebulous agricultural programmes as justification for further accumulation of foreign loans, without clear terms and conditions, to the detriment of the poor masses and generations yet unborn.
The party further warns that the loan request, if approved by the @nassnigeria, will exacerbate our nation’s debt burden, mortgage our agricultural sector, weaken our investment capacity and worsen our food security challenge.
Our party invites Nigerians to note that with the $1.2 billion (N459 billion) Brazilian loan, in addition to the N5.20 trillion borrowing already proposed in the 2021 budget, our nation’s debt burden will hit a disastrous N36.2 trillion which will plunge our economy into a devastating pitfall.

A machete-wielding Bronx man is accused of fatally hacking a man he met on a dating hook-up app — and his roommate walked in on the bloody aftermath of the slaughter, police sources said Monday. Juan Alonso, 50, was charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. Police were still trying to identify the victim of the horrifying attack.
Alonso’s roommate, who had been away, returned home to the apartment he shares with the suspect on E. 206th St. near Perry Ave. in Norwood about 7:10 p.m Sunday. He found Alonso, machete in hand, standing over the dead victim, sources said. The victim was lying face down with slash and stab wounds to his head and back, authorities said.
“He was like so cut up," building super John Gonzalez, 33, told the Daily News, adding the victim was “on the floor in pieces.”
Alonso was wrapped in a blood-soaked bed sheet when police escorted him out of the apartment complex, Gonzalez said of the grisly scene.
“I asked him what happened when they were putting him in the squad car,” he said “He said he was trying to defend himself. He said he was in the bed sleeping — and when he woke up, there was someone was on top of him trying to rape him...He was out of it." “He was a good guy," said Gonzalez, who has worked at the building for seven years. "I always talked to him. He always was calm. He didn’t look like the type of guy who would do something like that.”
Alonso met the victim on Grindr, a popular gay dating and hook-up app, sources said. It wasn’t clear what prompted the bloodshed, or if the pair had met in person before Sunday. “I know he used to go on a lot of dates,” said Gonzalez. "He was always having a new boyfriend.”
The distraught roommate told police he was placed in the apartment by a real estate agency and didn’t know the suspect well, despite their shared living quarters. Alonso appears to be emotionally disturbed, sources said.
His arraignment in Bronx criminal court was delayed because he was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation, court sources said.
“He must have been pushed to the edge,” said Cathy Lopez, 42, a long-time friend of Alonso. “Manny is not a violent guy.”
She added, "Manny was a cook. He made Mexican food in his apartment and sold it on the street.” Alonso told her he had been abused by past roommates, Lopez said. “I don’t know how he met them," she said. “Manny took roommates to pay the rent. And they turned on him.... Someone can only take so much.”
Several other murders this year have involved dating app encounters — including the death of an Upper East Side antiques dealer who reportedly met his lover-turned-killer online, and the slaying of a 25-year-old Utah woman whose Tinder date identified himself as the killer in a 911 call. A Michigan man was also charged in December with murdering his Grindr date on Christmas Eve, and eating his testicles.
