It does NOT have speedstep. It has something called low voltage tech, which is not the same thing. It cannot change speed dynamically, but it CAN lower its clock speed after a long period of disuse. However

NOT ALL CELERONS HAVE THIS FEATURE. you got lucky! Most people who buy a celeron M will suffer heat and low battery life.

You will also notice that your celeron has a locked multiplier of 24x, which means even if you have a good clockspeed, your FSB is throttled and ANYONE who knows anything about processors knows the FSB is where its at. You also have 1 MEG of your cache memory disabled

So u can't claim you have the same performance as a pentium M for gaming. The celeron M's are a bit better than most celerons because of the closeness in features to the paretnts, but they are still nothing more than crippled pentiums. I am a programmer/software developer.

Yes, I have a degree in computer science.

I come from a family of medical personnel (call me the family black sheep) and grew up surrounded by them. 

I will say this:

a) It is not possible to become a good doctor by freelancing or teaching yourself.
b) It is very very possible to become the greatest programmer on earth without ever earning a degree.



This is not to denigrate the value of computer science as a university degree course.

It is still valid, especially as a prerequisite to advanced computing theory. Computer science provides a foundation for advanced research fields that are closer to pure mathematics than Code writing.

It's use to *professional programmers* is however limited.

To draw an analogy- You wouldn't study zoology, biochemistry or microbiology to become a doctor. Those are research fields, theoretical in nature, just like Computer Science. What you will do is study to an advanced level and write textbooks that Doctors will read.

So medicine,law and accounting are NOT theoretical research fields like computer science. They are professional fields, courses that serve as an induction to a 'cult' of professionals. The neccesity of this is, in those fields, it is impossible for a layman to judge the ability of a professional, therefore the professional is graded based on his ability to assimilate a large, mature, and largely static and unchanging body of knowledge.

Perhaps in a century's time,The rate of advancement in computing will slow down, and there will be a similar large unchanging body of knowledge and clear cut method of grading individuals before inducting them to the 'programmer's cult'. However for now, such a thing does not exist. Technology is changing so fast that what was law today is nonsense tomorrow. As a result, if a person takes a 'snapshot' of the current IT trends, he can prance about calling himself a 'programmer' and no-one will be the wiser.

Also, coding has not become such a mature field that programmers cannot afford to make mistakes. If a surgeon screws up, his patient dies or is disfigured. If I mess up my code, I tell the user to stop making noise over the phone and I deploy a patch. As long as coding is still at  a stage where such a lack of professionalism is acceptable, we cannot deny that the nearest self-taught programmer will equal or exceed the skills of the finest MIT graduate, especially when it comes to such braindead tasks as web development and database administration.

The closest we have to such accrediatitions are the certification courses offered by major corporations. But the rate at which they are upgraded and expire is indicative of the speed with which the 'body of knowledge' changes.


So, I'm sorry my friend, but even though prof Ibiyemi may be a bonafide genius, I know some kids who will design a better website than him any day, if only because they have more time to surf the web and copy-paste webmonkey.

The CPU has nothing to do with wireless connectivity. Of course a pentium M can support wifi!

The only difference between a centrino and a non-centrino is that the Wireless chipset *may* not be by intel.

Since there isnt anything particularly amazing about intel wifi, this is a non-issue. If u need wifi, look on the box.

Also DUDE! don't get confused! What you said about celeron/centrino being better than pentium is complete nonsense! his is because centrinos include pentiums, and celerons are crippled pentiums. The person advising you was probably saying this:

AMD is a different company

they have their own processor lines.

Theres much debate about their merits but generally you can expect this:

1) Desktop AMDs will typically outperform a similarly priced INTEL, sometimes by a factor of 2. With pentium4 it was embarrasing for intel how much more powerful AMD's were.

2) Compared to pentium 4, a lower clocked AMD would usually be faster. eg 1.7ghs amd beats 2.26ghz p4

3) The above is NOT true for LAPTOP chips, where the pentium M has always been superior and the Intel core 2 duo reigns supreme. HOWEVER AMD ARE CHEAPER, AND BETTER BATTERY LIFE/COOLING THAN MOBILE CELERONS.

4) Currently, AMD doesnt compete in the same space as core2duo. Core2duo is faster and better, but also more expensive, than anything AMD can muster.

For a desktop, a celeron will usually be good, because the difference between p4's and p4-based celerons isnt good for nongaming tasks.

However this is a laptop discussion, and because of the lack of speedstep, most celeron lappys are not a good choice because of poor battery life, and you know NEPA.

also, Naija is a tropical region, you dont want an overheating laptop because the manufactirer may not have made provisions for the kind of temps it will reach ona dail basis. It could become unstable and fail early.

I however noted the BIG, SUBSTANTIAL cost savings on a celeron. As always, I say tread carefully.

I really really want to play but I always end up sleeping especially with the main character moving around so slowly and the fighting so sloooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I wish I could fast-forward to where the party is like 4 characters strong so i have a challenge to keep me awake.

Xbox live is the top online gaming service right now, bar none. Sony may catch up with the interface of PShome, but it remains to be seen if they can support the infrastructure.

MS using XNA to streamline development is part of their genius. Sony placing barriers to entry for ps2 developers is just a bad business move.

However my point is that, barring the storage medium, the ps3 and 360 are VERY VERY CLOSE in terms of raw potential,  and if the technology for today's games is a yardstick, the 360 is SUPERIOR. Supporting my argument:

1)
RSX is on paper faster than Xenos. However, xenos uses direct access to system memory AND unified shaders. RSX uses dedicated shaders and needs to transfer data across a bus from main to video memory. In practice, the Xenos' method is better and more efficient, and in real world terms, games are looking better on 360 than PS3 even 6 months plus after the ps3's launch. By comparision, N64 games looked better than ps1 games AT LAUNCH, ps2 games looked better than DC games AT LAUNCH (minus jaggies), xbox games looked better than ps2 games at launch.

2)
Cell is a single core ppc with seven vector units. Xenon is a triple core ppc. Sony's argument is that the single core of the cell is clocked higher than xenon, and that the vector units give it xxxxxx gigaflops or whatever. In practce however, programmable shaders on the graphics units have made vector units on the processor a waste of time. They dont even help with physics. This isn't PS2.

3)
Then theres the issue of 1 4mhz core vs 3 3.6mhz cores. Well, games like quake4 and supreme commander have shown that multicore DOES matter with games, so the 360 has more horsepower!

My point is that even when the ps3's power is unlocked, the 360 will still compete and even beat it. The ps3's only real advantage is bluray for 50gigs versus 9gigs for dvd, and guaranteed harddrive. finish!

As for gfx cards, The troubleshooting issue may or may not be a nightmare depending on how computer-inclined you are. And since u sound like u are just waiting for an excuse to claim your weak pathetic consoles are anything more than mere worms in the presence of the MIGHTY PC, I do not relish the thought of sittting down discussing directx, t&l, AGP and driver revisions with your Joystick twiddling arse!

That laptop is a turkey.

1) 512 megs of RAM is utterly useless for vista, and you will curse the machine if it is XP with current software. I'm typing this from an nx8220 running XP, and until I upgraded it to 1GB memory recently I wanted to throw it out of the window. 1GB is the minimum for vista, and u really should not bother until u have 2GB

2) As a gamer, I will NEVER buy any laptop using intelGMA. I'd rather go for NVIDIA or ATI graphics. If you are a non-gamer, it may be sufficient, but nvidia/ati will give you the best of VISTA's new interface.

GMA is class 4 or 5 on that list, I think.

3) Think very very very hard about a celeron M. That laptop is probably a Z-class that I saw once at LG showroom in Ikoyi and I identified the processor as a speedstep-disabled pentium M (see my post above to get clarifications). That means overheating and poor battery life. Tread carefully.

SC has by far more depth than Tekken. It is by the same team, for Gods' sake. They couldnt risk losing the die-hard tekken fanatics (like you people) so they rolled all the improvements that were supposed to go into tekken 4 into SC while regurgitating tekken3 as tekken tag tournament. If you diss SC you are indirectly dissing Tekken as well, DUH.

Don't diss the SC. Tekken is a great game but SC is better. Learn to play it before you diss it, and increase your reaction time- Tekken has a way of making your reflexes slooooooooooooooow. I'm not a SC master, but I can never be beaten by a buttonmasher, and while I can find sneaky ways to kill tekken players that are better than me, I have never beaten a superior SC player. The skill progression is just superb. If buttonmashers are killing u, u are a masher yourself!

That said, SC has the worst singleplayer component ever, so if u lack competition in ure area i don't blame u for hating on SC. I'm trying to sell my copy of SC sef, theres no-one left in my area to play against
